An Aulete Takes Flight: The Iconography Of Music And Myth In A Myrina-Type Terracotta In The Mead Art Museum, Loren Isotalo

New England Classical Journal

A Myrina-type terracotta figurine of a flying aulete held in Amherst College’s Mead Art Museum exemplifies a new body of evidence relevant to the study of ancient Greek music. I propose that this coarse figurine indicates possible musical funerary practices of Myrina and that the aulete may be a depiction of the god Eros. As the aulos inhabits a complex space in Greek social thought, a connection between Eros and the aulos would open up new ways of understanding how the ancient Greeks received and understood Eros as a god through music and sound.

Out With The Old, In With The Young? Youth And Old Age In Vergil’S Eclogues And Georgics, Charissa Skoutelas, Anthony Smith

New England Classical Journal

Scholars have noted that Silenus’ entrapment by Chromis and Mnasyllos (Eclogues 6) and Aristaeus’ ambush of Proteus (Georgics 4) share distinct elements. Both passages portray youths forcefully binding an old figure with chains to compel a song. In comparing old Silenus and Proteus with the “boys” Chromis and Mnasyllos and “most daring of the youth” Aristaeus respectively, this paper traces such physical compulsion alongside the metaphorical confinement of Tityrus (Eclogues 1) and the Corycian senex (Georgics 4) to argue that Vergil mobilizes the clash of youth and senectitude to comment on the effects of literary tradition …

Enquêteurs (Non) Familiers : Qui Mène Les Enquêtes Dans Les Séries Télévisées Égyptiennes ?, Gianluca Parolin

Regards

The chapter analyzes the ubiquitous presence of crime investigations in contemporary Egyptian television drama, away from genre definitions of crime drama. By focusing on who conducts these investigations, the chapter maps the typologies of investigators on the small screen. The ‘conventional’ investigators of global crime drama are an extremely rare occurrence on Egyptian television, and even when they exist in the original work they tend to be marginalized in the adaptation. A host of ordinary citizens, on the contrary, are extremely busy carrying out investigations on the Egyptian small screen. The chapter considers the struggles that these ‘non-conventional’ investigators encounter, …

À Propos De « Cilama » (Hady Zaccak, 2024), Joseph Korkmaz

Regards

Understanding How Family Dynamics Affect Mental Health Communication In Inside Out: A Content Analysis, Kataryna Morton Mar 2025

Understanding How Family Dynamics Affect Mental Health Communication In Inside Out: A Content Analysis, Kataryna Morton

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

This study examines the impact of open communication between family members on mental health and a child’s sense of belonging in the film Inside Out. Previous research has shown the impact of media on children’s socialization, which can influence stigma and make it less likely for vulnerable communication to occur. It is crucial for children to learn to communicate their emotions, and the media can play a key role in shaping these beliefs. Inside Out provides a positive example of mental health communication, which is specifically explored through Riley’s communication with her parents throughout the film. Using a content analysis, …

Poultry Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Probiotics have been used to promote pioneer colonization by beneficial bacteria in poultry. The purpose of the present study (four trials) was to determine if an in ovo injection with Bifidobacterium saeculare (B2-2, B3-4) and/or lactic acid bacteria (LAB18, LAB46) at d18 of embryogenesis reduced Enterococcus and Gram-negative bacterial colonization in the gut at hatch. An environmental challenge model was used to simulate microbial contamination in large-scale hatch cabinets in a laboratory setting. In all trials, gut homogenates obtained from chicks at hatch were plated to enumerate relevant bacterial populations. Performance was evaluated in trials two and four. The top …

The 1953 Codes: Rayyā And Sakīna On Screen (1953-2005), Elena Chiti

Regards

This paper examines on-screen representations of female criminals. It focuses on Rayyā and Sakīna, two sisters who were arrested in Egypt in 1920 and executed in 1921. Since 1953, the sisters have inspired movies and TV series that have entrenched their myth in popular culture. Rayyā and Sakīna are at the core of narratives that bear moral imperatives on societal issues, such as the place of women in society and the relation of the nation to its margins. I will argue that, until a recent off-screen resignification, Rayyā and Sakīna have not been deeply resignified in Egyptian movies. Instead, they …

Répéter Une Scène De Crime : « Abou Leila » (2020) D’Amin Sidi Boumédiène, Boualem Khelifati

Regards

This article examines the way in which Amin Sidi Boumédiène’s film Abou Leila (2020) crystallizes the Algerian tragedy of the 1990s through the story of a quest for revenge that “repeats a crime scene” by deploying it on the scale of the vast Algerian territory. The pursuit by two policemen (released of their uniforms) of a chimerical terrorist named Abou Leila seems to satisfy a desire for “national” revenge against crimes that remain unpunished to this day. The resulting murderous madness tells the alienation of an entire country caught up in a fratricidal war. Repeating the crime, Sidi Boumédiène’s film …

Radical Resistance In The Penumbra Of The Law: Legal Mobilization For Migrant Farmworkers Under Neo-Colonial Racial Capitalism, Vasanthi Venkatesh

Journal of Law and Social Policy

Workers from the Global South with temporary immigration status provide a transitory, cheap, exploitable workforce that is responsive to economic vicissitudes and supremacist anti-migration discourse. They are created as an exceptional category of persons “essential” for their work but with no right to remain and claim citizenship-type entitlement to the Global North. The programs in agriculture are rooted in the legacies of indentureship, plantation, and other forms of racialized coerced labour. These programs continue to entrench a neocolonial racial capitalist global order where “unfree labour” is sanctified by contemporary liberal laws. Caught in the vice of a hegemonic, racial, state-governed …

The Prillwitz Mammoth: Taxonomy, Sex, Age, & Delayed Skeletal Maturation Of A Geologically Young Mammoth, Anna Rybachek

Honors Theses

The Prillwitz mammoth, a nearly complete mammoth skeleton found in Southwest Michigan in 1962, is one of the geologically youngest mammoths from North America (AMS C-14 date: 11,300 ± 100 BP). Bones are well preserved; some long bones show post-mortem flaking, scratches, or grooves of unknown origin. All long-bone epiphyses remain unfused except the distal humerus, suggesting it was < 28 years old at death. In contrast, the skull and mandible preserve M3s and m3s, respectively, that are in mid-wear, indicating an Asian Elephant Year dental age of ~45-50 years. Long bone size and inferred shoulder height are consistent with the size of a large woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) or small to mid-sized Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi), but dental evidence is most consistent with M. columbi.

Pelvic dimensions suggest it is a male. The ≥ 17-year mismatch between age inferred from tooth progression and wear (~45 Asian Elephant Years) and age inferred from epiphyseal fusion (< ~28 Asian EY if male) may indicate either substantially accelerated dental progression or delayed skeletal maturation for this mammoth; we deem the latter more likely. Based on modern analogs, delayed maturation could have been due to severe malnutrition, hormonal imbalance, illness, or genetic factors. Given the geologically young age of the Prillwitz mammoth (likely near the time of mammoth extinction), we speculate that delayed skeletal maturation may have been attributed to environmental stressors near the end of the Pleistocene. Further work is warranted on very late mammoths.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an inherited disorder that predisposes individuals to malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs), a highly aggressive sarcoma with limited treatment options and poor prognosis. This study explores the potential of targeting the interaction between Galectin-1 and Ras as a novel therapeutic strategy for MPNSTs. Through molecular docking, we identified critical residues involved in the Galectin-1 and H-Ras interaction. We developed LLS30, a compound designed to target this Ras-binding pocket on Galectin-1, and tested its efficacy. LLS30 effectively disrupted the Galectin-1/Ras interaction, causing Ras delocalization from the plasma membrane and inhibiting Ras signaling. In vitro experiments …

Evaluation Of Gfap And Ptau Protein Expression In Male And Female Cci Mouse Models, Sara Wallace

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a serious public health concern that leads to the death or disability of thousands of individuals in the US annually. Progression of TBI involves primary damage from the initial, mechanical injury and secondary damage, from nonmechanical, pathological dysfunction. The secondary damage mechanisms can be better understood, diagnosed, and treated through the quantification of TBI biomarkers. The two biomarkers of interest in this study are pTau and GFAP. The male and female mouse models showed similar significant increase in GFAP following injury, as well as a general lack of increase in pTau expression following the injury. …

Embryo implantation is a critical event in the establishment of pregnancy, and implantation failure is a major cause of pregnancy loss in women. Coordinated, cell-type specific responses to the ovarian steroid hormones, estrogen, and progesterone, within the endometrium underlie successful embryo implantation and pregnancy establishment. In this study, we utilized a glandular epithelium (GE) specific Cre recombinase mouse line that is only active in the adult (Prss29-Cre) to determine the biological role of progesterone receptor (PGR) in uterine glands during pregnancy. Conditional ablation of PGR specifically in the GE compromised fertility due to defects in uterine receptivity and embryo implantation. …

Histone Acetylation Modulators In Breast Cancer, Xueying Yuan, Jeffrey M Rosen Mar 2025

Histone Acetylation Modulators In Breast Cancer, Xueying Yuan, Jeffrey M Rosen

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in women worldwide. Aberrant epigenetic reprogramming such as dysregulation of histone acetylation has been associated with the development of breast cancer. Histone acetylation modulators have been targeted as potential treatments for breast cancer. This review comprehensively discusses the roles of these modulators and the effects of their inhibitors on breast cancer. In addition, epigenetic reprogramming not only affects breast cancer cells but also the immunosuppressive myeloid cells, which can facilitate breast cancer progression. Therefore, the review also highlights the roles of these immunosuppressive myeloid cells and summarizes how histone acetylation modulators affect their …

The expression of members of the progesterone receptor membrane component (PGRMC) family, particularly PGRMC1, is elevated in diverse types of cancers, particularly those of the female reproductive system. While xenograft tumor studies using human transformed cell lines in immunocompromised mice have suggested that PGRMC1 enhances tumor growth and chemoresistance, the exact role of members of the PGRMC family in cancer development in vivo remains unclear. In this study, we examined the effect of deleting Pgrmc2 on the development of endometrial hyperplasia and cancer using a murine phosphatase and tensin homologue (Pten) conditional loss-of-function model. We previously established that …

Rethinking Hope In Dystopian Times: A Critical Assessment, Gerard Delanty

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

I begin by discussing the salience of the idea of hope for the present day with some examples which illustrate its strong political and cultural resonance. However, the now very extensive literature on hope, mostly in moral and political philosophy, is somewhat diverse and unclear as regards how it should be understood in ways that make it meaningful for the present day. While some of the most important perspectives are in the political philosophy of hope, there is almost no discussion of its sociological significance. I offer a brief critical strand of the main themes in recent writing on hope …
