Falling Women And Empty Skies: Returning To 9/11 In Fiction By Daniel Alarcon, Claire Vaye Watkins, And Otessa Moshfegh, Jeffrey Gonzalez Apr 2025

Falling Women And Empty Skies: Returning To 9/11 In Fiction By Daniel Alarcon, Claire Vaye Watkins, And Otessa Moshfegh, Jeffrey Gonzalez

Department of English Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Daniel Alarcon’s “Absence,” Claire Vaye Watkins’s “Rondine al Nido,” and Otessa Moshfegh’s My Year of Rest and Relaxation are American works of fiction that save their most substantive commentary on the 9/11 terror attacks for their final page, despite each text largely focusing on other matters. This gesture illustrates the works calling upon and questioning the gravitas afforded to the tragedy of September 11. Reviewing the reception history of 9/11 fiction and making comparisons to canonical 9/11 narratives, I argue that these texts complicate these canonical and criticial frameworks: they treat 9/11’s significance as a variable, rather than a constant.

Meat, The Future: The Role Of Regulators In The Lab-Grown Revolution, Joseph B. Davault, Michael S. Sinha Apr 2025

Meat, The Future: The Role Of Regulators In The Lab-Grown Revolution, Joseph B. Davault, Michael S. Sinha

All Faculty Scholarship

The United States is one of the largest consumers of meat globally. The production of meat contributes substantially to climate change due to the levels of greenhouse gasses emitted and the amount of land, water, feed, and other natural resources required to raise animals used for meat. Traditional meat production is another major source for the emergence of zoonotic diseases and antimicrobial-resistant pathogens. Nevertheless, Americans consume more meat now than at any time in the nation’s history.

Advocates for policy change aimed at addressing the risks associated with meat production have typically focused on reducing meat consumption, alternatives to meat, …

Group Decision-Making Model Based On Triangular Neutrosophic Sets For Service Quality Evaluation In Tourism Mobile E-Commerce, Ying Liu Apr 2025

Group Decision-Making Model Based On Triangular Neutrosophic Sets For Service Quality Evaluation In Tourism Mobile E-Commerce, Ying Liu

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

Triangular fuzzy numbers are frequently used by experts to assess their opinions in the group decision-making (GDM) paradigm. In this research, we used neutrosophic because preference connections with triangular fuzzy numbers are consistent. In GDM, it is crucial to consider the degree of consensus and the consistency of expert opinion. The idea of additive approximation consistency is put out for triangular neutrosophic Sets (TNSs) additive reciprocal matrices to differentiate the typical consistency. The GDM methodology is used to evaluate tourism mobile e-commerce services to select the best one. Two methods are used in this study such as SWARA is used …

Quality Review Of Computer Digital Media Art Design Using Neutrosophic Logic: A Case Study, Gao Huijuan, Fu Licheng

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

Evaluating the quality of Computer Digital Media Art Design is complex because it involves both subjective artistic elements and objective technical criteria. This study uses the multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) method to deal with different criteria. Two MCDM methods are used in this study such as Preference Selection Index (PSI) Method to compute the criteria weights and the RATGOS method to rank the alternatives. These methods are used neutrosophic sets to dela with vague and uncertainty information. Eight criteria and seven alternatives are used to select the best alternatives. Four experts have evaluated these criteria and alternatives. An example is …

Differential Impacts On Proteoglycan Expression In The Response To Lens Wounding In Reparative And Pro-Fibrotic Microenvironments, Janice L Walker, A. Sue Menko Apr 2025

Differential Impacts On Proteoglycan Expression In The Response To Lens Wounding In Reparative And Pro-Fibrotic Microenvironments, Janice L Walker, A. Sue Menko

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Ex vivo lens epithelial explant cultures created through a technique that mimics cataract surgery provided an ideal model with which to compare the impacts on proteoglycan expression in the response to wounding in both reparative promoting and pro-fibrotic microenvironments. On their native basement membrane capsule the injured lens epithelium undergoes regenerative repair, with the wound closing within a few days. Their migration across the wound area is led by a population of activated lens resident immune cells. The same leader cell population also directs the wounded epithelium to migrate off the outside edges of the lens explant across the surrounding …

Rethinking The Litigation Boom, Charlotte S. Alexander Apr 2025

Rethinking The Litigation Boom, Charlotte S. Alexander

Vanderbilt Law Review

This Article rethinks the functions and functioning of litigation booms. Using an original data set that tracks Fair Labor Standards Act cases during the 2000–2016 period, the Article shows that booms are not anomalies but are instead an expected behavior in our distributed system of civil law enforcement. Specifically, plaintiffs and their lawyers “herd” or converge on a particular type of case, fueled by information transmitted via networks, made available to the general public, or both. The data also reveal that booms can end on their own, reaching a natural tipping point without legislative or judicial retrenchment. This analysis has …

The Pamela Anderson Exception: How The Public Figure Doctrine Makes Involuntary Pornography A Subject Of Public Concern In Congress’S Revenge Porn Statute, Jared Kossover Apr 2025

The Pamela Anderson Exception: How The Public Figure Doctrine Makes Involuntary Pornography A Subject Of Public Concern In Congress’S Revenge Porn Statute, Jared Kossover

Vanderbilt Law Review

Congress’s chosen remedy for the proliferation of online revenge porn has a design flaw. The Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act, codified in 15 U.S.C. § 6851, provides a civil right, enforceable in federal court, to victims of nonconsensual pornography. However, exceptions for matters within the “public concern,” written into the statute with the First Amendment in mind, weaken the force of the Act and threaten to make its proscriptions a nullity. This Note calls on Congress to narrow the public concern exception in the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act to include only matters of political significance. Such an amendment will …

Therapeutic Role Of Bioactive Peptides Derived From Hemoglobin, Priya Antony Pereppadan Apr 2025

Therapeutic Role Of Bioactive Peptides Derived From Hemoglobin, Priya Antony Pereppadan

Dissertations

Bioactive peptides are peptide fragments derived from the proteolytic cleavage or maturation of functional proteins that have shown promising therapeutic potential in addressing major health challenges, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and pain management. Diabetes is characterized by high blood glucose levels due to insufficient insulin production or utilization. There are several therapeutic targets for managing diabetes, and one key target is dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP IV) due to its role in glucose metabolism. In hypertension, angiotensin-converting enzyme 1 (ACE1) is critical for regulating blood pressure by forming angiotensin II, and its inhibition represents an established treatment strategy. Additionally, the …

One-For-All: Towards Universal Domain Translation With A Single Stylegan, Yong Du, Jiahui Zhan, Xinzhe Li, Junyu Dong, Sheng Chen, Ming-Hsuan Yang, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose a novel translation model, UniTranslator, for transforming representations between visually distinct domains under conditions of limited training data and significant visual differences. The main idea behind our approach is leveraging the domain-neutral capabilities of CLIP as a bridging mechanism, while utilizing a separate module to extract abstract, domain-agnostic semantics from the embeddings of both the source and target realms. Fusing these abstract semantics with target-specific semantics results in a transformed embedding within the CLIP space. To bridge the gap between the disparate worlds of CLIP and StyleGAN, we introduce a new non-linear mapper, the CLIP2P …

Can Industrial Agriculture Be Resilient To External Shocks? Industrial Agriculture In Diversified Clusters In Rural China, Qian Forrest Zhang, Zhanping Hu Apr 2025

Can Industrial Agriculture Be Resilient To External Shocks? Industrial Agriculture In Diversified Clusters In Rural China, Qian Forrest Zhang, Zhanping Hu

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

We propose a new model – “industrial agriculture of smallholders” – to conceptualize the agri-food system in China. These smallholders are embedded in “diversified clusters” in rural China, which also include rural industries and extensive rural-urban linkages. Their relationships with markets are more complex and dynamic than what is often portrayed under the linear framework of “commodity chains”. As an alternative to the globalized model of industrial agriculture, we argue that “industrial agriculture of smallholders” has greater resilience to external shocks. Using a village in northern China during the COVID-19 pandemic, we illustrate how economic diversity within this “diversified cluster” …

Kinship, Memory, And Migration In The Work Of Zhang Xiaogang, Feng Mengbo, And Kurt Tong, Lin Zhang Apr 2025

Kinship, Memory, And Migration In The Work Of Zhang Xiaogang, Feng Mengbo, And Kurt Tong, Lin Zhang

Art History Theses and Dissertations

In the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, several Chinese and Hong Kong artists began engaging with family photographs to explore questions of kinship, memory, and personal identity. While existing scholarship on Chinese art has provided important insights into ancestral values and Confucian lineage systems, it has largely focused on pre-twentieth-century works and overlooked how contemporary artists reinterpret familial imagery to address shifting cultural and political conditions. This thesis offers a complementary perspective by examining three case studies, Zhang Xiaogang’s Bloodline: Big Family (1993-2010), Feng Mengbo’s My Private Album (1996), and Kurt Tong’s The Queen, The Chairman and I (2009-2013), …

“Everybody Else Seems To Be Able To Get Help”: Rural Regulation, Access Loss, And Antigovernment Sentiment, Jennifer Sherman Apr 2025

“Everybody Else Seems To Be Able To Get Help”: Rural Regulation, Access Loss, And Antigovernment Sentiment, Jennifer Sherman

West Virginia Law Review

This Essay draws upon two decades of the author’s research on rural United States communities to explicate ways in which the regulatory state has intervened in rural areas and economies, often with the claim of protecting land, natural resources, and/or wildlife. The outcomes are frequently disastrous for the human populations of those communities and generally are not planned for or mitigated by policy. The Essay argues that rural distrust of and aversion to government oversight is not caused primarily by ideological or cultural stances, but rather is an outcome of experiences of abandonment by the agencies that are meant to …

What Are The Games For?: The Hunger Games And Reality Tv, Audrey Perez Apr 2025

What Are The Games For?: The Hunger Games And Reality Tv, Audrey Perez

Senior Honors Theses

In Suzanne Collins’ series, The Hunger Games, a dystopian Capitol holds an annual televised gladiator-style competition in which child participants fight to the death. These Games function as a psychological tool of propaganda that influence both viewers and participants to sustain an oppressive government. Collins prominently explored the Games’ medium as a reality television show through the way it reinforces an ideology of oppression and control through visual messaging and emotional complicity to create division between classes of people. Real world reality TV also has ideological underpinnings that can negatively influence both viewers and participants through its depiction of a …

Demographic Variations In Long Qt Syndrome: Analyzing The Impact Of Gender, Ethnicity, And Environmental Factors On Prevalence And Risk, Heidi Bosch Apr 2025

Demographic Variations In Long Qt Syndrome: Analyzing The Impact Of Gender, Ethnicity, And Environmental Factors On Prevalence And Risk, Heidi Bosch

Senior Honors Theses

Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is an arrhythmic condition characterized by delayed repolarization of cardiomyocytes, identified by prolonged QT interval on an electrocardiogram (ECG). LQTS can be caused by congenital mutations of ion channels or acquired through conditions, medications, and environmental factors. Prolongation of the QT interval can trigger deadly arrhythmia including torsade de pointes (TdP). LQTS has been named the top cause of sudden cardiac death (SCD) for young individuals with anatomically normal hearts. The incidence of LQTS has been reported to be between 1:2000 and 1:2500. The demographic differences in LQTS prevalence have not been thoroughly researched. The incidence …

Negotiating Power: The Influence Of Women In Shaping Colonial Barbados And Jamacia, From 1750-1833, Giselle Rivera

Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards

This study investigates the roles of European, Mulatto, and African women in colonial Barbados and Jamaica from 1750 to 1833, arguing that these women were not passive recipients of colonial structures but active agents in shaping and contesting them. Drawing on a wide array of primary sources including personal journals, legal documents, medical texts, maps, and colonial artwork this paper explores how women negotiated the intersecting hierarchies of race, class, and gender in both rural and urban contexts. In plantation settings, European women exercised informal authority within patriarchal confines, often reinforcing racial and gendered oppression, while enslaved African women navigated …

The Blood Moon, Omar Shafi

Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards

What turns someone into a monster? Is it their nature—or what the world has taken from them? These are the questions at the heart of The Blood Moon, a short story that reimagines the origin of the werewolf myth through a tragic lens. Created for an upper-division honors course titled Monsters and Monstrosity, this project draws from literary research, folklore, and cultural analysis to examine how trauma, grief, and unresolved hatred can transform even the most innocent among us.

Set in a mythic past, The Blood Moon follows Warrei, a young, wolf-like creature known as a Wolven, who loses everything …

Infringing Information Architectures, Michael Goodyear Apr 2025

Infringing Information Architectures, Michael Goodyear

Articles & Chapters

Information architectures—systems that facilitate storing and sharing data and content—underpin daily life, from streaming sites like Netflix and Hulu to social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Since the printing press, these systems and their novel features have challenged the bounds of copyright law, leading to accusations that providers and users directly infringe others’ copyrights. Almost fifty years ago, however, a largely unexplored paradigm shift occurred. Copyright owners started to allege that information architecture providers should be broadly secondarily liable for all their users’ infringements. These claims, which this Article terms architectural infringement claims, pose an acute challenge to the …

Digital Capabilities And Customer Service Levels Of Small And Medium Sized Manufacturing Enterprises, Yuegang Niu

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The level of customer service, as an important tool for the differentiatedcompetition of small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises, has reshaped the value creation model of these enterprises. With the rise of service-oriented manufacturing enterprises under the "manufacturing service- oriented" model, this is a business model that combines manufacturing andservices. It not only provides physical products but also offers related value- added services. This indicates that small and medium-sized manufacturingenterprises urgently need to enhance their digital capabilities in the digital age to achieve dynamic upgrades and further improve their customer service capabilities. High-quality customer service capabilities have put forward newrequirements for …
