True Self: A Curriculum Evaluation Aimed At Mitigating Internalizing And Externalizing Behaviors In At-Risk Middle School Youth, Lisa M. Dailey

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The purpose of this mixed methods curriculum evaluation was to study the efficacy of a recently published curriculum, True Self, being piloted in a middle school to support students in a Tier 3 reengagement program. Given a healthy multitiered system has 5%–7% of students needing individualized support, the study consisted of three student participants. True Self offers schools a resource written by authors who have extensive experience working with at-risk youth. Moreover, using a research-based curriculum saves educators time on finding or creating material—time they should be using for case management and direct student support. Quantitative metrics to analyze the …

Lobbying For Our Lives: A Comprehensive Analysis Of The Impact Of Restrictive Non-Profit Lobbying Rules On The Progression Of Climate Change Legislation, Natalia Akopian Apr 2025

Lobbying For Our Lives: A Comprehensive Analysis Of The Impact Of Restrictive Non-Profit Lobbying Rules On The Progression Of Climate Change Legislation, Natalia Akopian

University of the District of Columbia Law Review

Lobbying is a powerful tool that allows interest groups to influence lawmakers and shape policy decisions. However, the ability to effectively lobby is not evenly distributed among stakeholders. Generally, private businesses face minimal restrictions on lobbying while tax-exempt organizations, particularly non-profits advocating for environmental policies, operate under strict federal limitations on lobbying activities and expenditures. This structural disparity has created an uneven playing field where corporate interests, such as the fossil fuel industry, wield disproportionate influence over climate policy. As a result, climate-friendly legislation often struggles to gain traction despite the public’s growing concern over environmental issues.

This note examines …

Epigenetics, Preconception Tort Liability, And Public Health, Peter Sie Apr 2025

Epigenetics, Preconception Tort Liability, And Public Health, Peter Sie

UC Law Journal

Epigenetics is an emerging science that studies how our behavior and environment can change the function of our genes without changing our genetic code. These changes can pass on to our children and grandchildren, for better or for worse. Epigenetic knowledge could change our understanding of human biology and individual responsibility. However, it is also ripe for misunderstanding. Commercial entities seek to capitalize on the hype to sell snake oil under the “epigenetic” label. In the popular press, reporters dramatize limited studies to create sensational headlines, often blaming parents for causing epigenetic harms to their children.

If this attitude toward …

Tillamook: Ethical Values Or Misleading Marketing?, Victoria Chin, Ealynn Hsu, Kyana Le, B Littman, Natalia Trejo Andalon Apr 2025

Tillamook: Ethical Values Or Misleading Marketing?, Victoria Chin, Ealynn Hsu, Kyana Le, B Littman, Natalia Trejo Andalon

B-Corp Case Studies by UNL Raikes Seniors

Tillamook began as a humble cooperative for the local dairy farmers of Tillamook County, Oregon, to ensure that high-quality cheese was the local standard. As time passed, Tillamook evolved to establish an internal Farm Services Team to help support each farmer and pay above market value for members’ milk–in return, receiving a stable supply of dairy to manufacture its dairy-based products. Additionally, the farmers are still the ones who call the important shots for Tillamook rather than other corporate shareholders. Tillamook County Creamery Association (TCCA) has since expanded nationally, but the foundation remains the same: high-quality dairy to create high-quality …

Shakespeare’S Early Histories And The Construction Of Government, Paul Olson Apr 2025

Shakespeare’S Early Histories And The Construction Of Government, Paul Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Shakespeare’s first tetralogy has been treated as an account of the reinvention of government, especially a Hobbesian reinvention demonstrating how authoritarian government forces order out of chaos. This article argues that, though Hobbesian elements present themselves, Shakespeare employs subtexts available to his time and place to speak of how orderly government is constituted: that is, he relies on accounts of the Fall from perfection into chaos and the return from it through divinely blessed kingship that are present in syncretic readings of Ovid and the Bible. The two subtexts give order to the progress from Fall into chaos and back …

Burying The Icepick: Why And How The United States Should End Its Dispute With Canada Over The Legal Status Of The Northwest Passage, Ryan Weber Apr 2025

Burying The Icepick: Why And How The United States Should End Its Dispute With Canada Over The Legal Status Of The Northwest Passage, Ryan Weber

William & Mary Law Review Online

This Note argues that the United States should work with Canada to pass an amendment to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) that allows Canada to legally claim the Northwest Passage as internal waters. While the United States has long championed freedom of navigation, important U.S. security, environmental, and diplomatic interests weigh in favor of a legal regime that allows Canada to exercise complete control over the Northwest Passage. However, UNCLOS does not currently support Canada’s claim. Thus, the best means of accomplishing this objective is for the United States to work with Canada to …

Perspectives On Gaming Throughout The Years, Noh Fekre Apr 2025

Perspectives On Gaming Throughout The Years, Noh Fekre

ART 108: Introduction to Games Studies

Video games are a lot younger of an art form compared to other mediums like books or movies which means how they fit into our culture isn’t really set in stone yet. They have existed for a while but got their first big boom through arcades and home consoles. I want to look at how video games present themselves differently to other mediums and how that might have affected their perception amongst the general populace while also looking at how that perception has changed over time due to how games have changed themselves.

Redefining Fun: How Realism And Effort Engage Players In Video Games, Marsel Abdullin Apr 2025

Redefining Fun: How Realism And Effort Engage Players In Video Games, Marsel Abdullin

ART 108: Introduction to Games Studies

In the current era of video game development, the gaming industry frequently pursues instant gratification, creating a landscape for immediate and empowering rewards. Current trends clearly show that experiences allow players to become superhuman or extraordinary beings with very little difficulty, satisfying a common desire for escapism and power. This suggests that “fun” is commonly associated with ease, speed, and constant positive feedback. However, my counter-argument is the emergence of games such as Kingdom Come: Deliverance and Red Dead Redemption 2. These games operate with a different game design and philosophy. In fact, they embrace slowness, hardship, and the detailed …

Food For Thought: The Impact Of The Gut-Brain Axis On Mental Health, Emily S. Miiller

Honors Thesis

Research regarding the role of the human microbiome has grown over the years as professionals develop a better understanding of the gut-brain axis. New studies and expanding knowledge on the relationship between the nervous system and gut microbiome promote a deeper understanding of the impact of diet on mental health. Diet plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy balance between the gut and the brain. Incorporating nutritional modulators, such as probiotics, prebiotics, and vitamins, is crucial for supporting the gut-brain axis by influencing neurotransmitter production, managing inflammation, and promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. On the other hand, …

Advancing Liver Models: Exploring Immortalized Hepatocytes For Improved Pharmacokinetic Studies, Camryn Woolfolk Apr 2025

Advancing Liver Models: Exploring Immortalized Hepatocytes For Improved Pharmacokinetic Studies, Camryn Woolfolk

2025 Graduate Student Research Symposium

The liver serves as a primary role to the understanding of pharmacokinetics, driving the need for effective and reproducible liver models. While animal liver models and HepG2 cell lines offer accessibility and replicability, they lack functional accuracy in comparison to human livers. Primary human hepatocytes, often considered the “golden standard” for in vitro modeling due to high metabolic function and capabilities, face challenges in scalability and long-term function. These limitations hinder the scalability of successful primary hepatocyte models, impairing their use as a rapid response tool to chemical threats. Immortalized hepatocytes are liver cells that have been genetically modified to …

One Health, One Planet: Optimizing Dairy Cow Metabolism With Natural Additives For A Sustainable Future, Joel Alabi

2025 Graduate Student Research Symposium

This study investigated the combined effects of unique blends of essential oil (EOBs) and fumaric acid (FA) on ruminal fermentation and metabolites in dairy cows, using the rumen simulation technique system. Three rumen-cannulated, non-lactating Holstein Friesian cows served as inoculum donors. The total mixed ration (TMR) included corn silage, alfalfa hay, and a concentrate mix in a 3:1:1 ratio. The four treatments were: Control (TMR without additives), EFA1 (TMR + EOB1 + FA), EFA2 (TMR + EOB2 + FA), and EFA3 (TMR + EOB3 + FA). Sixteen fermentation chambers, with four replicates per treatment, were arranged in a completely randomized …

Analyzing Driver Distraction During Animal Crossings On Rural Roads: Insights From Eye-Tracking And Vehicle In-The-Loop Simulation, Amir Milad Moshref Javadi, Sita Ram Parasad

2025 Graduate Student Research Symposium

Rural roads continue to be among the riskiest and least understood driving conditions. Using a vehicle-in-the-loop driving simulator and Tobii Glasses 3 eye-tracking technology, this study examined driving performance and behavior on rural roads in three different visibility scenarios: high (during the day), medium and low(during the night). A comparison of driver attention and decision-making in manual and Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) modes was made possible by the inclusion of actual risks in the simulations, such as roadside distractions and animal crossings considering both animal walking and running cross the road. Important findings showed that drivers’ ability to notice …

The fundamental aim of this review is to inform readers about the active implementation of Agrivoltaics in the United States and various other nations. This innovative approach within traditional farming practices is proving its sustainability and potential profitability through successful practical applications. Its viability depends on the region, the specific crops cultivated, or the animals raised on the farm. Additionally, there is widespread scientific agreement that the acceleration of human-induced climate change constitutes a crucial global challenge, evident in escalating temperatures, rising sea levels, and the occurrence of catastrophic extreme weather events. These new practices could assist in reducing agricultural …

The Migrant Family Separation Crisis: The Multifaceted Approach To End The Practice, Obtain Redress, And Prevent Its Return, Mariela Olivares Apr 2025

The Migrant Family Separation Crisis: The Multifaceted Approach To End The Practice, Obtain Redress, And Prevent Its Return, Mariela Olivares

Mercer Law Review

Recent movements highlight a dual approach to resisting the horrific government policies of family separation and family detention. Capitalizing on xenophobic and racist hostilities, the policies created deep societal and political divides while igniting new levels of resistance in public protest and legal challenges. Although the Trump Administration’s targeting of migrant families was not a new strategy to deter migration to the U.S., the oppression of migrants through the Family Separation Policy has taken on a heightened level of moral depravity and unconstitutional infringement of due process rights, parental rights, and rights of children. For some traumatized families, these actions …

Rituals Of Reluctance: How Loper Bright Further Obscures Civil Rights’ Place In The Modern Administrative State, Cameron K. Obioha Apr 2025

Rituals Of Reluctance: How Loper Bright Further Obscures Civil Rights’ Place In The Modern Administrative State, Cameron K. Obioha

Mercer Law Review

Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo (Loper Bright)marks the end of the Chevron doctrine and the abandonment of nearly forty years of precedent. Despite providing extensive reasoning regarding why eliminating an anchor of administrative law is the culmination of long‑awaited progress, no member of the Supreme Court of the United States elected to opine on a crucial implication of this historic decision. The court did not address how, with reinstated dominion over “every open issue” in regulatory law, it will reconcile the ever‑widening chasm between civil rights policy and the modern administrative state when such challenges inevitably arise.

Investigating Mercury Contamination In Urban Fish: Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy And Histological Analysis For Environmental And Human Health, Indy L. Cockrill, Ross Andrew Apr 2025

Investigating Mercury Contamination In Urban Fish: Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy And Histological Analysis For Environmental And Human Health, Indy L. Cockrill, Ross Andrew

SPARK Symposium Presentations

Mercury contamination in aquatic ecosystems is a pressing environmental and public health concern, particularly in urban areas where industrial runoff and wastewater contribute to heavy metal accumulation. This study investigates mercury presence in fish from Richland Creek in Nashville, TN, by analyzing histological changes in liver and muscle tissues. Mercury bioaccumulates in aquatic food chains, potentially leading to physiological damage in fish and posing health risks to humans who consume contaminated seafood. While prior research has established mercury’s toxic effects, there is a need for localized studies assessing its presence in urban waterways. The hope is to find histological abnormalities …

Efficacy Of Ketamine In Reduction Of Depression-Like Symptoms In D-Amphetamine Withdrawal, Sara Mcclung Apr 2025

Efficacy Of Ketamine In Reduction Of Depression-Like Symptoms In D-Amphetamine Withdrawal, Sara Mcclung

SPARK Symposium Presentations

Numerous studies have indicated a commonality in symptoms between patients with depression and those with psychostimulant withdrawal. In addition, both conditions appear to act on similar neurobiological limbic structures such as the nucleus accumbens, hippocampus, amygdala, and prefrontal cortex, all of which are components of emotional processing and function. More studies have suggested a relationship between depression and decreased levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in these structures. The administration of ketamine (an NMDA receptor antagonist) has recently been found to restore healthy BDNF levels and mitigate depressive symptoms in animal models. However, whether ketamine is an effective treatment for …

This chapter reevaluates Walahfrid Strabo’s Vita of Otmar (d. 759), the founder of the Monastery of St. Gallen, focusing on its description of the trial that led to Otmar’s deposition and imprisonment. It argues that Walahfrid’s aim was not primarily to produce a text that established the cult of a foundation saint but rather a “Defensio Otmari” that engaged with the accusations of …
