Infestations Stored In A Jam Jar, Cara Young

English Senior Capstone

Infestations Stored in a Jam Jar is a collection of fiction and poetry that delves into the inner mind of characters using a variety of genres. The collection creates a scrapbook of pieces, forming a textured exploration of the human experience through subgenres like persona poetry and flash fiction. Each piece approaches themes of fear, time, the artistic mind, and forgotten memories under varying lights of horror, dystopia, and reminiscence. The title is from the newest and last piece of the collection, “Somewhere in a Spider Neighborhood,” referring to the buried memories and thoughts that are lost to time and …

Falling In Love, Falling Apart: The Intersection Of Love And Tragedy In The Book Thief And Thirteen Reasons Why, Hannah Crowe Apr 2025

Falling In Love, Falling Apart: The Intersection Of Love And Tragedy In The Book Thief And Thirteen Reasons Why, Hannah Crowe

English Senior Capstone

The Book Thief and Thirteen Reasons Why depict love in dramatically different ways; these differences come into focus when analyzed through the lens provided in C.S. Lewis’ The Four Loves. The relationships differ in both the nature of the love they depict and the stability they maintain amid tragedy. In Thirteen Reasons Why, Hannah and Clay's connection primarily embodies lust, rooted more in fleeting desire than lasting emotional depth. In contrast, Liesel and Rudy in The Book Thief cultivate a deep love, developing it through a gradual process that aligns with the stages of Lewis' concept of love.

Journal of Global Hospitality and Tourism

Using the theory of reasoned action as the underlying theoretical foundation, this study examines the direct effects of compatibility, perceived usefulness, communicability, perceived risk, and perceived playfulness on attitudes toward online booking and the indirect effects of these variables on consumers’ intention to use three different online hotel booking channels - independent hotel websites, chain hotel websites, and third-party hotel websites. Additionally, this study tests the direct effect of attitude towards online booking on consumers’ intention to use the three online booking channels. Collected data from 638 participants via Amazon M-Turk was analyzed using partial least squares based structural equation …

Virtual Victor: Bringing Our Mascot To Life, Juan D. Guzman-Duran, Jonathan T. Hunnacutt, Honesty Beaton

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

In this project, we transformed the Fort Hays State University tiger mascot into a fully rigged, animated virtual character. Using Adobe’s character animation tools, we created a model that can mirror and perform human movements in real time. The system uses a camera to track facial expressions and body motion, which are then mapped onto the tiger character. This poster includes the following: "Why We Made Virtual Victor," "Procedure," "Why is Victor Useful," and "What We Learned."

Painting The Other: Mary Cassatt's Spanish Portraits And The Feminine Gaze, Delaney Batter Apr 2025

Painting The Other: Mary Cassatt's Spanish Portraits And The Feminine Gaze, Delaney Batter

Undergraduate Theses in Art History

The historical viewing of women artists, in conjunction with Mary Cassatt’s biography and later depictions of women and children, suggests that Cassatt's gender is identified within the art historical canon as an essential component to the interpretation of her work. The language attached to Cassatt's work is most often taken from discourses surrounding female-produced artwork of the nineteenth century, attaching passive and stereotypically feminine attributes like 'delicate,' 'light,' and 'tender' to the style, composition, and subjects of her works. These characteristics were among the accepted nineteenth-century descriptions of artworks, with inherent femininity translating to inherent domesticity.

Rather than further reducing …

Inverse Kinematics And Physics-Based Animation For A Mech Simulation Vr Game, Chengxiang Li Apr 2025

Using Camera Stations To Investigate Occupancy Probability And Habitat Associations Of Island Spotted Skunks (Spilogale Gracilis Amphiala) On Santa Rosa And Santa Cruz Islands, Desirae Thomaier Apr 2025

Using Camera Stations To Investigate Occupancy Probability And Habitat Associations Of Island Spotted Skunks (Spilogale Gracilis Amphiala) On Santa Rosa And Santa Cruz Islands, Desirae Thomaier

Master's Theses

The California Channel Islands are unique in that two islands (Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz) support two endemic mesocarnivores, the island fox (Urocyon littoralis) and the island spotted skunk (Spilogale gracilis amphiala). Following the near-extinction of island foxes in the early 2000s, island spotted skunk populations increased significantly. Now that foxes have recovered, skunk captures have precipitously declined - possibly due to interspecific competition with foxes who have a similar diet but a larger body size and wider temporal niche. It has been proposed that skunks selectively use canyon bottoms and drainages with high vegetation cover and that these areas …

Open Educational Resources For A More Just Romanticism, Leila Walker Apr 2025

Open Educational Resources For A More Just Romanticism, Leila Walker

Publications and Research

Efforts to diversify the field of Romanticism, long overdue, have intensified

recently, and many Romanticist organizations now sponsor programmes

aimed at amplifying Black and Brown voices. Most of these efforts have

focused on content: how to present Romanticism as a global movement

and include non-white authors in our anthologies and syllabi. While these

much-needed changes address some of the field’s traditional blind spots,

they do little to materially benefit our most vulnerable students or to

address the structural barriers that maintain Romanticism’s exclusionary

status quo. Open educational resources, or OERs, are one way to begin

productively transforming the way the …

Louis Wain (1860-1939) was a British artist who changed the public's perspective of house cats. Wain was an incredibly talented artist who attended the prestigious West London School of Art and went into work as an illustrator. In 1884, he married a woman named Elizabeth Richardson and together they had a house cat named Peter. However, Elizabeth developed breast cancer and passed away shortly after their wedding. In her sickness, Wain drew pictures of Peter to raise her spirits. He used Peter as a muse after her passing, and his art of cats quickly got incredibly popular. Wain illustrated his …

Visual Storytelling In Video Games, Michael P. Mclaughlin Apr 2025

Visual Storytelling In Video Games, Michael P. Mclaughlin

Honors Theses

Every year, new top-hit video games are developed. Some are highly praised by critics, while others receive more mixed reviews. Among the factors that lead to these ratings is the plot/story elements. As more video games are published their focus on story elements has faded, overshadowed even, by newer graphics and jaw dropping mechanics. My Thesis and Project aim to show how games are a phenomenal medium that conveys complex stories with more engagement than most other mediums and resurface the importance of story development in games in the future.

The Weight Of Feeding The World: Stress In Kentucky Farmers, Natalie Tolle Apr 2025

The Weight Of Feeding The World: Stress In Kentucky Farmers, Natalie Tolle

Honors Theses

Agriculture work (farming, fishing, and forestry) is one of the most stressful jobs, with one of the highest suicide rates among all major job occupation groups. The stress that farmers face is often out of their control, stemming mainly from weather and financial concerns. This topic has been researched extensively in many countries around the world, however, research and literature are lacking in the United States, and specifically in the state of Kentucky. This study aimed to investigate the stress that Kentucky farmers face, how they cope with that stress, if it impacts their mental health, and how social support …

Creatine Supplementation Is Safe, Beneficial Throughout The Lifespan, And Should Not Be Restricted, Richard Kreider, Andrew Jagim, Jose Antonio, Douglas Kalman, Chad Kerksick, Jeffrey R. Stout, Robert Wildman, Rick Collins, Diego A. Bonilla

Faculty Scholarship

As researchers investigating creatine supplementation, we have become increasingly concerned about reports that government agencies are attempting to restrict the sale of dietary supplements, including dietary supplements containing creatine, to children and adolescents. Creatine is a naturally occurring compound found in every cell in the human body that plays a critical role in cellular metabolism. The daily turnover of creatine is about 2–4 grams/day, depending on muscle mass and physical activity levels (1, 2). About half of the daily need for creatine is synthesized in the body from amino acids (arginine, glycine, methionine) and stored as free creatine or phosphocreatine …

Extremist Threats To Food And Agriculture Critical Infrastructure, Jennifer Carson, Michael K. Logan Apr 2025

Extremist Threats To Food And Agriculture Critical Infrastructure, Jennifer Carson, Michael K. Logan

Reports, Projects, and Research

In this report, NCITE researchers explore the current threat domestic extremists pose to the Food and Agriculture (FA) critical infrastructure sector. We pay specific attention to three threat actors, including 1) animal rights and environmentally motivated extremists, 2) racially/ethnically motivated violent extremists, and 3) anti-institutionalist extremists. Additionally, we elaborate on several security considerations that are unique to the FA sector and the role that precision agriculture technologies play in this ever-evolving threat landscape. We conclude by recommending strategies that national security leaders should consider to strengthen and fortify the FA sector.

Streamlining Wildlife Regulation, Robert L. Fischman Apr 2025

Streamlining Wildlife Regulation, Robert L. Fischman

Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law

A recent burst of revisions in the bedrock regulations governing projects that may adversely affect wildlife represents a generational shift in policy. Streamlining federal decision -making drove much of this reform. Streamlining offers a path to address climate change without abandoning a longstanding commitment to wildlife conservation. The conservation community recognizes the need to build new infrastructure to reduce the rate of climate change through air emissions. The most urgent priority is decarbonizing the electrical ~rid through renewable energy generation and a better transmission network. Adaptation to the "new abnormal" of climate-driven environmental disruption demands federal approvals for a host …

Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications

Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) are combustion products present in substantial numbers on atmospheric particulate matter with half-lives of days to years. The mechanisms linking EPFR exposure and respiratory diseases are unclear, but likely involve oxidative stress. We investigated the mechanisms by which EPFR exposure impact on well-differentiated primary human nasal epithelial cells from subjects sensitive or resistant to oxidant stressors, cultured at an air-liquid interface. We found that EPFR exposure induced mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) production; increased mitochondrial DNA copy number; down-regulated mucus production gene, Mucin-5AC (MUC5AC); up-regulated detoxifying gene, cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1), nuclear factor erythroid 2-related …

Fences, Fields, And Fourth Amendment Rights: Limiting The Powers Of Game Wardens, Ryder Schone Apr 2025

Fences, Fields, And Fourth Amendment Rights: Limiting The Powers Of Game Wardens, Ryder Schone

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

Since the establishment of the Open Fields Doctrine in 1924, both private and public lands not immediately surrounding a home or commercial building have been open to search and seizure by U.S. game wardens. Owing to a century of access without judicial supervision, the powers of game wardens have expanded to a state of overreach which violates the Fourth Amendment rights and privacy of citizens. This paper proposes a federal statute that clearly delineates the circumstances under which game wardens can enter private property. Legal scholars generally agree on the need for reform; however, current discussions often fail to address …
