Dataset For Binding Of Bl-Crystallin With Models Of Animal And Human Eye Lens-Lipid Membrane, Preston Hazen, Geraline Trossi-Torres, Nawal K. Khadka, Raju Timsina, Laxman Mainali

Biophysics Research Data

Several discoveries show that with age and cataract formation, B-crystallin binds with the lens membrane or associates with other lens proteins, which bind with the fiber cell plasma membrane, accompanied by light scattering and cataract formation. However, how lipids (phospholipids and sphingolipids) and cholesterol (Chol) influence B-crystallin binding to the membrane is unclear. This research aims to elucidate the role of lipids and Chol in the binding of B-crystallin to the membrane and the membrane’s physical properties (mobility, order, and hydrophobicity) with B-crystallin binding. We used electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spin-labeling methods to investigate the binding of BL-crystallin with a …

"I Know Who I Am": Draw-And-Tell Conversations With Gender-Creative Children, Eline Leemans Lenne

Dissertations and Theses

A growing number of children identify in various gender-creative ways, likely due to broader social awareness and affirmation of transgenderism. Gender-creative children face higher risks for adverse social, academic, mental health, and healthcare outcomes compared to non-transgender peers. Support from loved ones along with guidance from pediatric providers can mitigate poor outcomes and ensure that gender-creative children live healthy and happy lives. Young gender-creative children's perspectives about the aforementioned topics are markedly absent from the literature, which instead highlights adolescent and adult proxy perspectives.

In this participatory arts-based study anchored by a constructivist epistemology and informed by post-structuralist, queer, and …

Stoicism As A Panacea For Contemporary Problems, Taiwo Oriyomi Akande Apr 2025

Stoicism As A Panacea For Contemporary Problems, Taiwo Oriyomi Akande

LSU Master's Theses

The contemporary world is battling with the persistent problems of racism and environmental crises that threaten human co-existence and constitute an existential threat in general. These pressing issues have led to injustice, disunity, and ecological destruction. Though human history has recorded some victories in the advancement of human rights and environmental policies yet, there are still some forms of racism that are entrenched in society's structure. Environmental degradation also continues due to the failure or limitation in policies meant to tackle it, and the unsustainably bad attitudes of humans toward the environment. This thesis argues that Stoicism, a philosophical tradition …

Loc-Barragan, Rafael Alejandro Calzada-Arciniega, Liz A. Alfaro-Juantorena, Raúl Cueva Del Castillo, Christopher Blair, Víctor H. Jiménez-Arcos

Publications and Research

Molecular data continue to serve as an invaluable tool to assess species limits and patterns of cryptic diversity, particularly in areas harboring high levels of biodiversity. The Sceloporus scalaris group, known as bunchgrass lizards, contains 13 described and one undescribed species distributed throughout high elevation biotas of Mexico. However, recent studies suggest that diversity in the group may be substantially underestimated. We collect new sequence data from four independent loci to determine the evolutionary distinctiveness and phylogenetic relationships of an isolated population of bunchgrass lizard in the Sierra San Juan (SSJ) in the Mexican state of Nayarit. Concatenation and coalescent-based …

Fifteen salamanders in total were used. Four tanks of salamander pairs were treated with the Azoxystrobin …

Dissecting The Contribution Of Stmn2 To Als Pathogenesis, Kelsey Krus Apr 2025

Dissecting The Contribution Of Stmn2 To Als Pathogenesis, Kelsey Krus

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

TDP-43 is required for splicing of Stathmin-2 (STMN2) transcript, so STMN2 is reduced in most ALS patients. TDP-43 does not regulate STMN2 in mice as it does in humans. Thus, mouse models of ALS do not reflect patient loss of STMN2. To test the hypothesis that a reduction in STMN2 contributes to ALS pathogenesis, we generated STMN2 knockout mice. Constitutive STMN2 loss induces an early sensory and motor neuropathy with disrupted motor behavior and dramatic distal neuromuscular junction (NMJ) denervation. This NMJ pathology occurs in fast-fatigable motor units, which are the most vulnerable in ALS. In contrast, motoneurons and axons …

Computed Microtomographic Imaging Of Revascularization During Healing Of Achilles Tendon Injury, Seher Yilmaz, Ozan Akkus

Faculty Scholarship

Angiogenesis in injured tendons may contribute to regeneration, but quantifying it post-injury has been mostly limited to 2D semi-quantitative histology. This study aimed to develop micro-CT as a 3D tool to quantitatively assess tendon blood vessels in an experimental animal model. Adult male Wistar rats (N = 36) had injuries induced in their Achilles tendons by needle insertion. The study included three post-injury groups: 12 hours post-injury (12H), 3 weeks post-injury (3W), and 8 weeks post-injury (8W). The uninjured left Achilles tendon served as the control for each group. Intravital cardiac perfusion with barium sulfate enhanced contrast between tendon and …

Breaking The Synaptic Vesicle Cycle: Mechanistic Insights Into Presynaptic Dysfunctions In Epilepsy, Kevin Jiang, Lu-Tang Yang, Mingshan Xue

Duncan NRI Faculty and Staff Publications

Synaptic dysfunction is a hallmark of many neurological disorders including epilepsy. An increasing number of epilepsy-causing pathogenic variants are being identified in genes encoding presynaptic proteins that affect every step of the synaptic vesicle cycle, from vesicle loading, tethering, docking, priming, calcium sensing, fusing, to recycling. These different molecular dysfunctions result in converging impairment of presynaptic neurotransmitter release, yet lead to diverse epileptic disorders. This review focuses on representative monogenic epileptic disorders caused by pathogenic variants of key presynaptic proteins involved in different stages of the synaptic vesicle cycle: SYN1 (vesicle pool regulation), STXBP1 (vesicle docking, priming, and fusion), and …

The CDKL (cyclin-dependent kinase-like) family consists of five members in humans, CDKL1-5, that encode serine-threonine kinases. The only member that has been associated with a Mendelian disorder is CDKL5, and variants in CDKL5 cause developmental and epileptic encephalopathy type 2 (DEE2). Here, we study four de novo variants in CDKL2 identified in five individuals, including three unrelated probands and monozygotic twins. These individuals present with overlapping symptoms, including global developmental delay, intellectual disability, childhood-onset epilepsy, dyspraxia, and speech deficits. We also identified two individuals with de novo missense variants in CDKL1 in the published Deciphering Developmental Disorders (DDD) and GeneDx …

Exit Strategy: How Methods Of Gaining Independence From European Colonial Powers Impact Development In Post-Colonial African Nations, Sophia Wehle Apr 2025

Exit Strategy: How Methods Of Gaining Independence From European Colonial Powers Impact Development In Post-Colonial African Nations, Sophia Wehle

Undergraduate Student Symposium

How does the way a colony gains independence from its power impact that colony’s future development? It is well documented that being a former colony has an impact on how a nation develops once they are independent, however, what is not clear is if a nation’s development is impacted by the way they separate from their colonial power. This paper argues that there is a correlation between the way a colony gains their independence and how developed they are. For the sake of this research three main ways of gaining independence will be considered: though violent resistance, peaceful negotiations, or …

Comparative Genomics Across Streptomyces Murinus Strains To Identify Biosynthetic Gene Cluster For Antifungal Metabolite 'Pentamycin', Nitish Dundigalla, Ashley Bran Sampson, Smrithi Mukund, Melianni Terrero Terrero

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Streptomyces are filamentous, Gram-positive bacteria in the phylum Actinobacteria that are known to produce a diverse array of antimicrobial metabolites. A Streptomyces murinus strain SPC1, contains a 15- gene biosynthetic gene cluster (BGC) that produces an antifungal metabolite ‘pentamycin’ (fungichromin), and is shown to exhibit antimicrobial activity against fungal pathogens of palms1. Using SPC1 strain as a reference, we analyzed the conservation of BGCs across 17 other S. murinus strains. A specialized bioinformatics analysis tool, antiSMASH2 , was used to identify and annotate BGCs that produce pentamycin. Pairwise comparison of the 15 genes comprising the pentamycin cluster …
