The endocardium plays a pivotal role in governing myocardial development, and understanding the intrinsic regulatory insights will help apprehend pathological cardiomyopathy. Glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase 4 (GPAT4) is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane anchored protein. While the role of GPAT4 in glycerophospholipid biosynthesis is well established, its function in the ER is less explored. Here, we generate Gpat4 global and tissue-specific knockout mice and identify the essential role of GPAT4 in endocardial development. Deficiency of GPAT4 provokes endocardial ER stress response and enhances ER-mitochondrial (ER-mito) communications, leading to mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) escape. As a result, the cGAS-STING pathway is triggered to stimulate …

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), including preeclampsia, affect 1 in 6 pregnancies, are major contributors to maternal morbidity and mortality, yet lack precision medicine strategies. Analyzing transcriptomic data from a prospectively-collected diverse cohort (n = 9102), this study reveals distinct RNA subtypes in maternal blood, reclassifying clinical HDP phenotypes like early/late-onset preeclampsia. The placental gene PAPPA2 strongly predicts the most severe forms of preeclampsia in individuals without pre-existing high risk factors, months before symptoms, and its overexpression correlates with earlier delivery in a dose-dependent manner. Further, molecular subtypes characterized by immune genes are upregulated in less severe forms of HDP. …

Protpen: A Pipeline That Combines Sequence- And Structure-Based Approaches To Predict Protein Functions, Diya Mathai

Theses

Proteins of unknown function represent a significant gap in our understanding of biological processes, with many organisms, especially prokaryotes, harboring large portions of their proteomes that remain uncharacterized. For example, in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a major human pathogen, a large proportion of proteins are categorized as unknown or hypothetical in function. The precise number varies across species, but studies have shown that up to 30–50% of proteins in bacterial proteomes can lack functional annotations. Addressing this gap is critical to understanding the biology and pathogenicity of such organisms. Recent advancements in computational tools, particularly those in sequence and structure-based prediction, offer …

Sports cardiology broadly encompasses the cardiovascular care of individuals who place a high premium on habitual exercise, sports performance, and/or sports competition. Some of the essential aspects within sports cardiology include the preparticipation cardiac evaluation and the management of cardiac diseases in athletes. Although most sports cardiology practitioners are trained in adult cardiology, a significant number of individuals who participate in sports are pediatric-aged, < 18 years old. Up to two-thirds of children in middle and high school participate in organized sports or are involved in nonorganized recreational sports. The cardiovascular care of pediatric-aged athletes can be challenging because many of the classic tenets and principles in adult sports cardiology do not fully generalize to pediatrics, and there is a lack of the evidence base that may be present for adult athletes. The epidemiology, presentation, and progression of cardiovascular diseases can be significantly different between pediatric and adult athletes. The evaluation of potential diseases and management considerations may also differ between pediatric and adult athletes. Similar to adults, there are "gray zones" where it is difficult to differentiate between normal exercise-induced cardiac remodeling and true cardiac pathology, but the additional lack of normative standards further complicates assessments in pediatric athletes. Management decisions for pediatric athletes are generally based on limited data but carry substantial short- and long-term implications. Thus, shared decision-making as part of the determination of clinical management strategies and for sports participation is critical and requires the participation of the parents or guardian(s). In this state-of-the-art review, key differences between pediatric and adult-aged athletes are highlighted. Specifically, how to define the "pediatric athlete," consider cardiovascular adaptations observed among pediatric athletes, determine preparticipation screening options and optimal symptom-driven evaluations in children, and consider best practices for pediatric athletes with several key cardiac conditions are detailed. The purpose of this document is to represent the first primary reference available to providers who care for pediatric athletes with cardiovascular concerns.

The Lynmouth Flood Disaster As A ‘Rural Enterprise Metabolic Rift’ And Securitising Rural Regions Against Future Hazards Of Planetary Collapse, Orlando Goodall

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This article advances a novel synthesis of two critical theoretical positions to reinterpret the Lynmouth flood disaster of 1952 – an event which caused the deaths of 34 people. Rural enterprise criminology and the metabolic rift concept are brought into dialogue to elaborate a foundation from which to articulate the multifactorial process that eventuated in the flood. The article fills an absence in the social sciences on the significant loss of life that moves beyond descriptive narratives of the tragedy and dated positivist epistemology. The article displaces determinist explanations of natural science and popular invocations of ‘acts of God’ and …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Inflammation drives the initiation and progression of pulmonary hypertension (PH). Platelets, increasingly recognized as immune cells, are activated and increased in the lungs of patients with PH. Platelet activation leads to the release of α-granule chemokines, many of which are implicated in PH. We hypothesized that hypoxia-induced secretion of platelet α-granule-stored proteins and PH would be prevented in Neurobeachin-like 2 knockout (Nbeal2-/-) α-granule-deficient mice. Wild-type (WT) and Nbeal2-/- mice were maintained in normoxia or exposed to 10% hypobaric hypoxia for 3, 14, 21, or 35 days. We observed macrothrombocytopenia, increased circulating neutrophils and monocytes, and increased lung interstitial macrophages (IMs) …

70 - Unmeasured Confounding In Meta-Analyses Of Observational Studies Evaluating Maternal Periodontitis And Adverse Birth Outcomes, May Salama, Abdullah Al-Taiar, Denise Claiborne, Anwar Merchant

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Background: Maternal periodontitis has been consistently linked to adverse birth outcomes (ABOs). However, a causal relationship is not established due to potential unmeasured confounding factors in observational studies and inconclusive results from randomized controlled trials. This study aimed to assess the impact of unmeasured confounding factors in meta-analyses examining associations between maternal periodontitis and preterm birth (PTB) or low birth weight (LBW).

Methods: PubMed and MEDLINE, Cochrane, Embase, and Google Scholar were searched for systematic reviews with meta-analyses of observational studies between 2002 and 2023. Systematic reviews with meta-analyses of observational studies were included if either PTB or LBW were …

Predicting Capture And Survival Probabilities Of The Arizona Tiger Salamander: A Comparison Of Capture-Recapture Models, Brittney Nelson Apr 2025

Predicting Capture And Survival Probabilities Of The Arizona Tiger Salamander: A Comparison Of Capture-Recapture Models, Brittney Nelson

Scholars Week

Capture-recapture models are essential tools for estimating population dynamics in ecological studies. A fundamental component of these models is the capture history matrix, which records individual detection over time and serves as the basis for estimating survival and capture probabilities. This presentation explores three statistical approaches to these estimations: the Cormack-Jolly-Seber (CJS) model, the Hidden Markov Model (HMM) for CJS, and the Bayesian CJS model. The CJS model provides a likelihood-based framework for estimation, and the HMM CJS incorporates latent states into the model to account for uncertainty in detection. The Bayesian CJS extends this same analysis by integrating prior …

Sample Storage Method And Collection Time Effects On Horse Hair Cortisol Concentrations, Grace Robertson Apr 2025

Sample Storage Method And Collection Time Effects On Horse Hair Cortisol Concentrations, Grace Robertson

Scholars Week

Serum cortisol concentration is the gold standard for evaluating stress in horses. However, it can be affected by circadian rhythms, environmental factors, and other excitatory events. Hair cortisol is less subject to these variables and is less invasive to collect, but there is a lack of published information on hair cortisol concentrations in horses. The objectives of this study were to examine 1) the impact of sample storage (Room temperature vs. Frozen) and 2) the effect of collection date (spring vs. fall), on cortisol concentration in equine hair. It was hypothesized that Frozen samples would yield higher concentrations than Room …

Economics Of Controlling Weeds Of Permanent Pasture, I Popay, N Barlow Apr 2025

Economics Of Controlling Weeds Of Permanent Pasture, I Popay, N Barlow

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In general, inedible weeds of permanent pasture reduce pasture dry matter available to stock in direct proportion to their cover (Doyle et al., 1984). Translating the effects of weeds on pasture to reductions in animal production is difficult because (i) pasture value can range from zero to the cost of purchased feed (ii) weed effects and pasture value can vary seasonally and interact and (iii) reductions in pasture availability at one time affect later growth (Auld et al., 1987). There have been few direct measurements of effects of pasture weeds on animal productivity, because of the co.sts involved. However, simulation …

Variation In Hypericum Perforatum L. In Australia, M H. Campbell, C E. May, I A. Southwell, J D. Tomlinson

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In Australia Hypericum perforatum (St. John's wort) is a major weed of pastures because it replaces useful vegetation, causes photosensitisation in grazing animals, depresses their central nervous system and renders them hypersensitive to temperature change and handling (Campbell and Delfosse, 1984). H. perforatum infested 188,000 ha in New South Wales (N.S.W.) in 1976, (Campbell, 1977) and 173,000 ha in Victoria in 1983 (Shepherd, 1983). Specimens of H. perforatum collected in 1929 in N.S.W., Victoria and South Australia were classed as the narrow leaved var. angustifolium De Candolle (Calvert, 1930, 1932) at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (B. Mathew, pers. …

The Potential For Pasture Seed Production In Yunnan Province, Southern China, Li Shuan

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The objective of the seed production team has been to develop commercial seed production capabilities in the Yunnan Livestock and Pasture Development Project areas in Yunnan (Vaughan, 1987). It is mainly a mountainous area with altitudes ranging from 86 min the SE to 6,580 m in the NW. Since 1983, 523 cultivars or breeding materials of many tropical, transitional and temperate species have been introduced for evaluation at 13 sites in different ecological zones. About 90 cultivars show good adaption and produce high yields of dry matter.

A Comparison Of Rhizome And Seed Propagation Of Three Grasses Of Nei Mongol: Chinese Wildrye, Tender Pennisteum And Reedlike Foxtail, Na Sen, Lee Yan Qin, Su Xiao Lin Apr 2025

A Comparison Of Rhizome And Seed Propagation Of Three Grasses Of Nei Mongol: Chinese Wildrye, Tender Pennisteum And Reedlike Foxtail, Na Sen, Lee Yan Qin, Su Xiao Lin

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

China is making great efforts to re-vegetate and improve her rangelands. In Inner Mongolia, improvement and expansion of the rangeland base is necessary to meet the needs of a flourishing local livestock industry, and growing demand for livestock products (including draft animals) in China as a whole. But the harsh growing conditions in this cold, dry and windy steppe country make seedling establishment difficult, and propagation with seed is risky at best. Methods of grassland propagation that minimize this risk, reduce the rest period after planting, and result in a more productive range will aid the revegetation effort considerably, and …

Modification Of Stolon Growth, Development And Flowering By Plant Growth Regulators In White Clover (Trifolium Repens L.) Seed Crops, A H. Marshall, D H. Hides

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Within the EEC the need to develop low cost less intensive systems of animal production has led to an increase in the importance of legumes generally, and white clover in particular. At present, annual white clover seed usage within the EEC is approximately 4,000 tonnes, however, the self sufficiency rate is expected to fall below 50 % by the end of the 1980s due principally to unpredictable seed yields which make it an unprofitable crop for seed growers. The main component of seed yield in white clover is the number of ripe inflorescences at harvest (Zaleski, 1961) however, the proportion …

These plants have different degrees of feeding value. …

Goat Tying Styles Impact On Performance Consistency With Rodeo Competitors In The National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Ozark Region, Marie Baxley, C.A. Shea Porr, Thomas Powell Apr 2025

Goat Tying Styles Impact On Performance Consistency With Rodeo Competitors In The National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Ozark Region, Marie Baxley, C.A. Shea Porr, Thomas Powell

Honors College Theses

Goat tying is a rodeo event involving dismounting a horse, and flanking and tying three legs of a goat. Flanking is defined as picking a goat up and setting it on the ground on its side. Flank/gather (FG) is a style where riders scoop the legs with the right hand and then place them in the left. Catch the flank (CF), stuffing (ST), and funneling (FN) are other methods that involve the goats’ legs landing together so the right hand is not needed for gathering. The objectives of this study were to determine 1) if flanking method affects performance, and …

Daily Acute Intermittent Hypoxia Elicits Age & Sex-Dependent Changes In Molecules Regulating Phrenic Motor Plasticity, Jayakrishnan Nair, Alexandria Marciante, Carter Lurk, Mia Kelly, Maclain Capron, Gordon Mitchell Apr 2025

Daily Acute Intermittent Hypoxia Elicits Age & Sex-Dependent Changes In Molecules Regulating Phrenic Motor Plasticity, Jayakrishnan Nair, Alexandria Marciante, Carter Lurk, Mia Kelly, Maclain Capron, Gordon Mitchell

Department of Physical Therapy Faculty Papers

Acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH) elicits a form of respiratory motor plasticity known as phrenic long-term facilitation (pLTF). Exposure to repetitive daily AIH (dAIH) enhances pLTF, a form of metaplasticity. Little is known concerning cellular mechanisms giving rise to dAIH-induced metaplasticity and the age-dependent sexual dimorphism of AIH associated pro-plasticity mRNA expression. To test if age, sex, and dAIH effects are associated with differential expression of molecules that regulate the Q- and S-pathways and their cross-talk interactions to phrenic motor facilitation, we analyzed key regulatory molecules in ventral spinal (C3-C5) homogenates from young (3-month) and middle-aged (12-month) male and female Sprague-Dawley …

Strategic Insights From Antarctic Mpas: Navigating The Future Framework For High Seas Mpas Under The Bbnj Agreement, Alyssa Huffman Apr 2025

Strategic Insights From Antarctic Mpas: Navigating The Future Framework For High Seas Mpas Under The Bbnj Agreement, Alyssa Huffman

University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review

Current area-based management systems regulate only about 1.18% of the high seas, leaving highly migratory fish species at risk of overexploitation. As a result, new legal mechanisms are essential for protecting and managing high seas fisheries. In recent decades, stakeholders have debated how to balance competing interests while ensuring equitable and sustainable access to areas beyond national jurisdiction. One proposed solution is the establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). However, creating and managing high seas MPAs is a complex process. The Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources have undertaken this effort, establishing two MPAs …

Evaluating The Performance Of Bayesian Removal Models For Estimating Population Density And Detecting Trends With Variable Detection Probability, David R. Stewart Apr 2025

Evaluating The Performance Of Bayesian Removal Models For Estimating Population Density And Detecting Trends With Variable Detection Probability, David R. Stewart

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Removal models have long been used to estimate population abundance by progressively capturing and removing individuals from a closed population. These models provide a valuable tool for ecological monitoring, but their accuracy depends heavily on assumptions about detection probability, which may decline over successive sampling passes. Traditional removal models assume constant detection probabilities, an assumption that is often violated in real-world applications. This thesis aims to advance hierarchical Bayesian models by accounting for variable detection probabilities, improving the reliability of abundance estimates and trend detection. By integrating simulation-based analyses with empirical data from Lahontan Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus clarkia henshawi …

Cyber And Tech-Based Partner Stalking In Jefferson County, Norah Wulkopf Apr 2025

Cyber And Tech-Based Partner Stalking In Jefferson County, Norah Wulkopf

Undergraduate Theses

Since stalking laws were enacted in the 1990s, they have been historically difficult to enforce. As less and less of our lives become private due to our ever-present devices, stalkers frankly have more access to their targets than ever before. The tenuous nature of stalking laws and the growing resources for stalkers place targets of stalking in a very precarious situation: the legal system has never been adequately equipped to handle stalking cases, and local justice systems do not have the resources to handle tech-based crimes. Through interviews with actors in the criminal justice system, this presentation considers how these …

The Impact Of Perceived Discrimination On Mental And Physical Health Among The Hispanic Immigrant Population, Cheyla Tabares Cuesta Apr 2025

The Impact Of Perceived Discrimination On Mental And Physical Health Among The Hispanic Immigrant Population, Cheyla Tabares Cuesta

Undergraduate Theses

Discrimination has profoundly shaped the lives of individuals within disadvantaged communities, but its impact on mental and physical health has often been overlooked. In this project, I review literature on perceived discrimination based on immigrant status and its effects on psychological and physical health and examine a potential mediator and moderator of these relationships. Specifically, the relationships between immigration-based discrimination and both mental health and physical health may be mediated by perceived stress, meaning that discrimination may lead to higher stress levels, which results in poorer health outcomes. Furthermore, these relationships may be moderated by psychological resilience; individuals with higher …

Effect Of Heat Stress On Ileal Epithelial Barrier Integrity In Broilers Divergently Selected For High- And Low-Water Efficiency, Elizabeth S. Greene, Brooklee Roach, Maria Fernandez Cuadrado, Sara Orlowski, Sami Dridi Apr 2025

Effect Of Heat Stress On Ileal Epithelial Barrier Integrity In Broilers Divergently Selected For High- And Low-Water Efficiency, Elizabeth S. Greene, Brooklee Roach, Maria Fernandez Cuadrado, Sara Orlowski, Sami Dridi

Poultry Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Water scarcity and rising global temperatures are two of the greatest current and future threats to poultry sustainability. Therefore, selection for water efficiency (WE) and heat resilience are of vital importance. Additionally, intestinal integrity is of critical importance under challenging conditions to maintain nutrient absorption and therefore, growth and performance of broilers. Here, we examined the effect of chronic cyclic heat stress (HS) on the ileal expression profile of tight-junction, gap-junction, adherens, and desmosome genes in the fourth generation of divergently selected low (LWE)- and high water efficient (HWE)-chicken lines. LWE birds exhibited higher levels of gut permeability, regardless of …
