Genome Analysis Of Aeromonas Hydrophila Strain S14-452, Zarin Tasnim Raya Apr 2025

Genome Analysis Of Aeromonas Hydrophila Strain S14-452, Zarin Tasnim Raya

Undergraduate Research Conference

The Aeromonas hydrophila are gram-negative, opportunistic bacteria that can infect many groups of organisms, mainly fish and amphibians. In channel catfish, A. hydrophila causes fatal bacterial septicemia, leading to massive economic losses for catfish farmers. Therefore, an understanding of its genome will aid in identifying its virulence factors, metabolic pathways and survival mechanisms within the host. This study details the draft genome sequence of A. hydrophila strain S14-452, isolated from channel catfish exhibiting bacterial septicemia during a disease outbreak at a catfish farm.

A. hydrophila strain S14-452 was sequenced using the Illumina iSeq 100 System. Assembly was performed with SPAdes, …

Failure For Avon, Failure For Labour A Waterworks Project And The Shortcomings Of Left-Wing Groups In Pre-Wwi Aberdeen, Garrett Mast

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

On September 16th, 1909, the Aberdeen Daily Journal ran a single article that encompassed one and a half pages of the ten- page printing. This article did not discuss any national or international news, but rather a town council meeting for the city of Aberdeen in northern Scotland. This meeting was anything but standard procedure, lasting six and a half hours, a record for the council with at least 27 of the 34 councillors participating in the debate. The debate discussed the rather mundane question of from which river the council should seek approval for pumping new drinking water.1 “The …

Rap And Rhyme An Insider Look On African American Life In Urban America, Rachel Van Katwyk Apr 2025

Rap And Rhyme An Insider Look On African American Life In Urban America, Rachel Van Katwyk

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

Thousands of hands clapped and cheered for the rap artists heralded as the rock stars of the age. Fans packed into Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena, chanting to hear the song they all wanted to scream. F*** the Police. T he rap group, N.W.A., toured America in the summer of 1989 and was contractually obligated to forgo performing that particular song. Scattered among the crowd were police officers ready to take action if the song started playing. N.W.A. called an audible, and DJ Yella projected the song from the speakers for thirty seconds before three sharp shots were heard. At the …

An Investigation On Food Restriction In The Medieval British Church, Cope Makechnie-Hardy Apr 2025

An Investigation On Food Restriction In The Medieval British Church, Cope Makechnie-Hardy

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

When Seaxburh, Queen of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Kent, retired to her sister’s newly established religious house at Ely in 665 she was a physically broken woman, with “wan cheeks from fasting” and a body frail from years of food restriction.1 Already throughout her life Seaxburh had used her body as an integral part of her devotion to Christ, and after arriving at Ely “signed her stomach with the mark of Christ so that she might not burden it with food.”2 Nearly six hundred years later, Saint Elizabeth of Hungary would engage in a similar practice, referred to by historians …

Blood In The Snow The Mormon-Timpanogos Conflict At Battle Creek, Nathan Hale Apr 2025

Blood In The Snow The Mormon-Timpanogos Conflict At Battle Creek, Nathan Hale

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

On March 5th, 1849, a group of 36 Mormon men surrounded the Native American camp of a small band of Timpanogos at Battle Creek, which is present-day Pleasant Grove, Utah. The Mormon militia suspected this band of cattle rustling, and a conflict ensued that resulted in the shooting and killing of four Timpanogos men. During the battle, the women and children of the native camp took cover and endured exposure to the cold elements and frigid water of Battle Creek. Six days later, these same women and children arrived in Salt Lake City. Among the group of Native American survivors …

“To Inherit God Himself?” The Metaphysical Transformation Of Man As Theorized In Cotton Mather’S Biblia Americana, Michael Green Apr 2025

“To Inherit God Himself?” The Metaphysical Transformation Of Man As Theorized In Cotton Mather’S Biblia Americana, Michael Green

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

The tumult of the Enlightenment was enormous, not least in its impact on theologians of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Biblical exegesis (explanation of a scriptural text based on its own historical and cultural circumstances) of the Reformation that idealized interpretations grounded in unerring prophetic figures were suddenly and forcefully subjected to the tide of historical literalism propagated by major intellectual figures such as Hugo Grotius and Baruch Spinoza. They and their cohort believed that the Bible should be treated as a historical source and its merits scrutinized based on its literal accuracy

The Incomplete Conquest Of Spanish Guinea 1471-1910, Pual Guajardo Apr 2025

The Incomplete Conquest Of Spanish Guinea 1471-1910, Pual Guajardo

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

Mary Henrietta Kingsley, the famous early female explorer of Africa, once remarked that an appointment to the Equatoguinean island of Fernando Po was “equivalent to execution, only more uncomfortable.”1 Similarly, historian Randall Fegley remarked that Port Clarence, which became the capital of Equatorial Guinea, was known as “death’s waiting room.”2 When we think of the Spanish Empire, we usually envision the empire that decimated the Aztecs and the Incas, not a regime that failed to conquer and colonize an island one-fifth the size of Hawaii. Yet, for more than 400 years, the small indigenous community of Fernando Po quietly defied …

Whistleblowers: A Maya Narration On The Participation Of The Dead In The Cycle Of Life And Death, Emma Belnap Apr 2025

Whistleblowers: A Maya Narration On The Participation Of The Dead In The Cycle Of Life And Death, Emma Belnap

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

There is a common saying in modern American culture inspired by opera and the drudgery with which people view it. As the maxim goes, “It is not over until the fat lady sings.” If the Maya were to have their own variation on that saying, it may perhaps go, “Life is not over until the whistle is in the grave.” At burial sites on Jaina Island, an island near Campeche, Mexico rich with Maya history, hundreds of sculpted whistles have been found in graves, depicting various gods, animals, and humans.1 These objects give invaluable insight into the beliefs and practices …

Parody And Mis-Unda-Stendings In Comics Art World: Bridging The Gap With New Criteria, Yannis Koukoulas

SANE journal: Sequential Art Narrative in Education

The word parody and its many cognates such as appropriation, adaptation, pastiche, travesty, forgery, homage, tribute, swipe, etc., have often been at the centre of fierce debates within the traditional Artworld and various criteria have been proposed for the critical evaluation of visual and literary works. In particular, parody as a dominant practice in postmodern art is a concept that is subject to misunderstandings as to its content and meaning. In Comics Artworld, however, within which recontextualizing practices are very common, often with humorous content, the attempt to describe artists' works and intentions by the criteria applied to other arts, …

Comparison Of Patent Foramen Ovale Closure Vs Medical Therapy For The Prevention Of Recurrent Cryptogenic Stroke: A Systematic Review, Omar Hamodata, Saif , Almuzainy, Rand Yahya, Salam Koniali

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

Objectives: The optimal management approach for patients with cryptogenic stroke and patent foramen ovale (PFO) remains uncertain. Whether medical therapy—using antiplatelet agents or anticoagulants—or transcatheter device closure offers superior protection against stroke recurrence has been a topic of considerable debate. This systematic review aims to assess and compare the effectiveness of these two treatment strategies, incorporating recent studies to provide updated insights on the most effective approach to preventing recurrent cryptogenic stroke. Methodology: We systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, and Ovid database through December 2024. Eligible studies were randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) comparing PFO closure versus medical therapy among patients …

Efficacy And Safety Of Concomitant Surgical Ablation During Mitral Valve Replacement: A Systematic Review, Omar Hamodat, Saif Almuzainy, Rand Yahya, Razan Alzaatreh, Samiullah Haroon, Salam Koniali Apr 2025

Efficacy And Safety Of Concomitant Surgical Ablation During Mitral Valve Replacement: A Systematic Review, Omar Hamodat, Saif Almuzainy, Rand Yahya, Razan Alzaatreh, Samiullah Haroon, Salam Koniali

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

Objectives: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common comorbidity in patients undergoing mitral valve surgery (MVS), significantly increasing the risk of thromboembolism, heart failure, and mortality. Surgical ablation has recently been given a Class IA recommendation for concomitant MVS, reinforcing its role in restoring sinus rhythm and improving outcomes in this population. However, concerns about procedural complexity, extended operative time, and postoperative risks have limited its widespread adoption. This systematic review aims to synthesize evidence from recent randomized controlled trials to evaluate the safety and efficacy of surgical ablation for AF in patients undergoing MVS, addressing critical gaps in current clinical …

The Role Of Urbanization And Corticosterone In Auditory Sensory Processing In House Sparrows (Passer Domesticus), Brooke Fox, Ashley Lauraine, Hannah Peterson

24th Annual A. Paul and Carol C. Schaap Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2025)

Urban habitat expansion will introduce new anthropogenic challenges for wildlife populations, including habitat fragmentation, novel predators, and pollution. These challenges may hinder animal communication and contribute to increased stress levels. This study will investigate the physiological consequences of stressors on the house sparrow (Passer domesticus). Specifically, we will examine how urbanization affects stress hormone (i.e., corticosterone, CORT) levels and its relationship to auditory processing. It is predicted that urbanization may impose novel stressors on animals, leading to differences in this hormone across urban and rural birds. We seek to understand if differences in CORT levels could impact animals' …

A Narrative Review Of Military Reverse Triage., Daniel J Hurst

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

INTRODUCTION: Military reverse triage has been described at several points in the literature. However, an extensive review of the concept and any gaps that may exist has not been conducted. This narrative review seeks to understand how reverse triage is used in the military literature and how it might be implemented in practice, as well as the documented historical applications of reverse triage.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four databases were searched manually for English-language articles: PubMed, SCOPUS, JSTOR, and Worldwide Political Science Abstracts. In addition, a manual search of references, U.S. DoD, and NATO doctrine, as well as other published works …

“Alexa, Play Baby Shark!” How Digital Voice Assistants Impact Children’S Development, Benjamin Suo Apr 2025

“Alexa, Play Baby Shark!” How Digital Voice Assistants Impact Children’S Development, Benjamin Suo

Saint John’s Preparatory School Student Work

As digital voice assistants (DVAs) like Siri and Alexa become more common in households, their influence on young children becomes more vast and often overlooked. Using secondary research from news reports, academic research studies, and expert opinions, this paper explores the question: how do DVAs influence children’s emotional, cognitive, and social development, and in what ways can early exposure to such technology shape the behavior of future generations? While there are benefits—such as nurturing children’s curiosity by providing immediate feedback to questions and helping with language skills when the child queries the chatbot—the unemotional and mechanical ways that DVAs are …

Relationship Between Congestive Heart Failure, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Inflammatory Biomarkers, And Hospital Length Of Stay Among Covid-19 Patients., Alice Aghamie Osuji

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

COVID-19 has put immense pressure on healthcare facilities, especially in managing patients with comorbidity. This study addressed the association between two important coinfections, congestive heart failure (CHF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and their effect on hospital length of stay (LOS) among COVID-19 patients. The study also explored the predictive role of the inflammatory biomarker C-reactive protein (CRP) in prolonged hospitalization, also considering the influence of age and race. This study applied the Biopsychosocial Model and Chronic Care Model (CCM) to examine health outcomes and resource use. A retrospective cohort research design was used to examine medical records of …

The Impact Of Consuming An Electrolyte Drink Pre Vs Post-Workout On Recovery As Measured Through Urinary Indicators In Collegiate Cross-Country Runners, Laura Taylor, Aidan Becher, Madelynn Struck, Momodou Colley Apr 2025

The Impact Of Consuming An Electrolyte Drink Pre Vs Post-Workout On Recovery As Measured Through Urinary Indicators In Collegiate Cross-Country Runners, Laura Taylor, Aidan Becher, Madelynn Struck, Momodou Colley

24th Annual A. Paul and Carol C. Schaap Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2025)

BACKGROUND: Hydration is crucial in sports, as dehydration can decrease strength, endurance, and power. Drinking electrolytes before and after intense exercise can promote hydration. Few studies have compared the difference in consuming electrolytes pre/post-workout. The impact of consuming electrolyte drinks can be assessed by comparing pre/post-workout urinary biomarkers (UB). PURPOSE: To determine if drinking electrolytes before/after a workout improves post-workout recovery as measured by heart rate (HR) and UB in collegiate Cross Country (CC) runners. METHODS: 21 CC runners (43% men, 20±3 years) were divided into four groups. For four weeks (Sep-Oct 2024), participants consumed Liquid IV (LIV) or a …

Foraging Efficiency Of Rural And Urban House Sparrows, Passer Domesticus, Among Natural And Unnatural Obstacles, Annie Waldron, Katie Kowalyk, Mara Gutierrez

24th Annual A. Paul and Carol C. Schaap Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2025)

Urbanization may lead to food displacement for many animals. Urban birds are exposed to man-made objects that can result in variable food locations, unlike rural birds who inhabit areas where food locations are typically consistent. The introduction of unnatural obstacles may affect a sparrow's ability to find and reach food sources. Scientific studies have yet to find a significant increase in problem-solving skills related to foraging in urban versus rural birds. Our research seeks to determine the foraging efficiency of rural and urban house sparrows when exposed to obstructed food sources. Novel objects near a food source may scare birds …

Bird Observations Across Belmont's Campus, Jeremy T. Little, Josiah C. Mustaleski

SPARK Symposium Presentations

Over the course of 10 weeks our team collected data about bird sightings on Belmont’s campus. Sessions were recorded using eBird and Merlin Bird ID to correctly identify the birds and record accurate numbers. We conducted sessions at 3 different spots on campus, each with differing types and amounts of vegetation and human presence. These sessions were 20 minutes in duration and were conducted twice a week at each location. The data gathered was used to gain a better understanding of the bird trends and demographics on campus. This data was also used for WellCore events in conjunction with the …
