Using Visual Discharge Instructions: How Comics Can Improve Healthcare And Outcomes For Limited English Proficient Patients, Alexandra R. Streeter
Honors Thesis
The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate how graphic medicine could be a useful tool for communicating medical discharge instructions to populations with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). It is divided into three parts. First, it provides an overview of the biggest struggles LEP patients encounter in healthcare, which often occur around discharge instructions and medication changes. Second, the paper explores what graphic medicine is and how it has been used in healthcare. The last part of this paper consists of original graphic medicine artwork that addresses key issues for LEP populations during discharge with the goal of offering a …

Impacts Of Climate Change On Cannibalism And Disease Transmission In The Fall Armyworm, Kale Rougeau
Impacts Of Climate Change On Cannibalism And Disease Transmission In The Fall Armyworm, Kale Rougeau
LSU Master's Theses
Climate change may alter host-pathogen dynamics in terrestrial ecosystems due to rising global temperatures and carbon dioxide levels. Here, we examined cannibalism and disease transmission using the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda), an invasive agricultural pest, and its species-specific lethal baculovirus, Spodoptera frugiperda multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (SfMNPV), under various potential challenges of climate change. We used three temperature treatments (cooler, optimal, warmer) based on the fall armyworm’s thermal performance curve to simulate a changing climate and four artificial diets with various protein-to-carbohydrate ratios (low, equal, high, standard) to manipulate resource quality from altered carbon dioxide levels. We found that higher …

Subcortical plasticity has mainly been studied using invasive electrophysiology in animals. Here, we leverage precision functional mapping (PFM) to study motor plasticity in the human subcortex during 2 weeks of upper-extremity immobilization with daily resting-state and motor task fMRI. We found previously that, in the cortex, limb disuse drastically impacts disused primary motor cortex functional connectivity (FC) and is associated with spontaneous fMRI pulses. It remains unknown whether disuse-driven plasticity pulses and FC changes are cortex specific or whether they could also affect movement-critical nodes in the thalamus and striatum. Tailored analysis methods now show spontaneous disuse pulses and FC …

Sensing of cytosolic, double-stranded (ds) DNA or dsRNA molecules derived from microbial or endogenous sources triggers cell-intrinsic innate immunity, but sensors recognizing both cytosolic dsDNA and dsRNA are sparsely reported. Here we find that full-length human SAMD9 protein directly binds to synthetic or viral dsDNA or dsRNA. Overexpression of SAMD9 from various vertebrate species leads to robust production of interferons and pro-inflammatory cytokines. By contrast, loss of endogenous SAMD9 impairs the interferon responses to cytosolic dsDNA and dsRNA stimulation in multiple cell types and enhances the infectivity of pathogenic dsDNA and dsRNA viruses. Mice lacking Samd9l, the human SAMD9 homolog, …

Serological Detection Of Toxoplasma Gondii In Local Duck Birds, And Gallus Gallus In Basrah Province, Iraq, Ameer Ibrahim Abdulzahra, Alaa Ismail Saood, Afaq Talib Farhood
Baghdad Science Journal
Toxoplasma gondii was widely spread in humans and other animals, including domestic poultry, worldwide and depends on a unique collection of secretory and cytoskeletal organelles for host cell invasion. The meat of T. gondii infected poultry which includes chickens and ducks was widely consumed in most countries and was known as a primary source of human infection. In Iraq generally and in Basrah province especially, the prevalence of T. gondii in local ducks (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) and domestic chicken (Gallus gallus) was scarcely known. In the current study, the Latex Agglutination Test (LAT) and (TOX) Toxoplasma IgM/IgG Antibody Rapid Test …

Activated carbon is highly valued for its versatility and extensive industrial use. Walnut (Canarium vulgare Leech), an indigenous Indonesian plant primarily found in Eastern regions like Maluku and Tidore islands, produces shells that can be converted into activated carbon. This study involved obtaining carbon from walnut shells through pyrolysis at 360°C for 6 hours, followed by activation in a 3M KCl solution for 24 hours. The activated carbon was analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). FTIR analysis revealed functional groups including N-H, Ar-H (aromatic), C≡N, carbonyl CO, and ester …
Implications For "Adjacent" Waterbodies After Sackett V. Epa, John C. Colson
Implications For "Adjacent" Waterbodies After Sackett V. Epa, John C. Colson
Texas A&M Law Review
The Supreme Court’s recent ruling in Sackett v. EPA has rolled back Clean Water Act (“CWA”) protections for many wetlands on private property. Justice Kavanaugh’s little-commented-on concurrence identifies a class of waterbodies now unprotected by the CWA that nonetheless serves vital roles in flood control, pollution management, and habitat conservation. These waterbodies are those that lack a continuous surface connection (the majority’s test) to navigable waterways but are nonetheless “adjacent” to them in that they are separated by a single barrier. Including borrow pits and swamps held behind dikes, as well as the thousands of oxbow lakes near America’s rivers, …

Bog-Ged Down By Sackett: Strategies For Wetland Protection In Texas, Caleb Cook
Texas A&M Law Review
The Clean Water Act (“CWA”) has been one of the most powerful tools for protecting the nation’s waterways since it was first passed in 1972. However, there has long been ambiguity over the scope of the authority it grants for the regulation of wetlands. In May 2023, the Supreme Court resolved this question in Sackett v. Environmental Protection Agency. The effect of Sackett will be to remove significant amounts of previously regulated wetlands from federal jurisdiction. Federal legislative responses are unlikely, and while there are federal programs that can help temporarily fill the gap and bring some wetlands back …
Maximizing Germination Of Three Native Plants For Rangeland Restoration And Urban Landscapes Through Seed Enhancements, Janetta Teichert
Maximizing Germination Of Three Native Plants For Rangeland Restoration And Urban Landscapes Through Seed Enhancements, Janetta Teichert
Theses and Dissertations
Native plants offer numerous ecological benefits and opportunities for both rangeland restoration and urban landscaping, making their integration essential for building sustainable ecosystems. They enhance soil health, promote pollinator activity, increase microbial diversity, and support both wildlife and livestock, all of which contribute to overall ecosystem resilience. A promising strategy to improve the use of native plants is the application of seed enhancement technologies, which can optimize seed germination, improve seedling establishment, and enhance overall plant success in challenging environments. These post-harvest seed treatments incorporate materials that improve seed performance, often through coatings composed of binders, fillers, and active ingredients. …
Inquiry-Style Planetarium Activities, Emma Rasmussen Groberg
Inquiry-Style Planetarium Activities, Emma Rasmussen Groberg
Theses and Dissertations
Introductory astronomy students often face challenges in exploring their own ideas and investigating astronomical phenomena due to the limitations of nighttime observation and weather conditions. Planetariums overcome these barriers by simulating the night sky, making it accessible during class sessions regardless of external conditions. This provides an opportunity to engage students in inquiry-based activities, where they are presented with a scenario and encouraged to use their own reasoning to reach conclusions. In this study, we implemented inquiry-based activities in PHSCS 127 using the planetarium as an investigative tool. We developed four activities designed to help students explore their ideas and …

The Use Of Person-Centered Language In Scientific Research Articles Focused On Psychosis, Zach Monahan, Tanner Stone, Vinay Swami, Kelly Dunn, Micah Hartwell
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Purpose: Societal stigma of psychosis leads to delayed treatment for individuals experiencing early symptoms, for fear of being labeled “crazy” or “psychotic.” Delayed treatment can worsen the prognosis of individuals with psychosis. Proper adherence to person-centered language (PCL) guidelines can curb the widely held stigmatized preconceptions about psychotic conditions.
Methods: Our meta-epidemiological analysis began with a systematic search of literature in PubMed discussing psychosis from 2020-2022. From the 14,522 results, we randomly selected 500 articles in journals with at least 20 articles on psychosis (n = 9,775), of which 241 articles met the inclusion criteria. These papers were screened for …

Systemic hydration is known to promote optimal functioning of bodily systems—including the vocal folds. The impact of systemic dehydration on the biology of the vocal folds and the downstream effects of dehydration on voice output are not well understood. An in vivo rat model of systemic dehydration was employed to investigate vocal fold gene expression, histological changes, and acoustic changes in vocalization. Ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) were recorded every day for 5 days (baseline), in male and female Long-Evans rats (N = 36, ages: 3–4 months) using an anticipatory reward paradigm. Next, rats were dehydrated (N = 18) using a published …

Quantifying The Functional Impact Of Chronic Patellofemoral Pain And Its Relationship To Perceived Duty-Related Medical Readiness Among Active Duty Service Members, Emma H. Beisheim-Ryan, Sara R. Gorczynski, Ryan W. Smith, Shawn Farrokhi
Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
Introduction
Chronic patellofemoral pain (PFP) is a heterogeneous pain condition that may significantly burden active duty service members, whose rigorous physical training demands include activities such as running and heavy load carriage. While chronic PFP is often defined by its pathoanatomical characteristics, evidence from other pain conditions (e.g., chronic low back pain) suggests classifying pain by its functional impact on work, social, and self-care activities may better inform personalized treatment approaches. As this approach has not been previously undertaken in chronic PFP or younger populations with chronic pain, this study aimed to characterize the global impact of PFP on day-to-day …

Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Partnerships between cities and universities can help overcome the challenges of producing healthy plants free of pests and pathogens for urban planting and restoration. In Tacoma, a partnership with researchers from Washington State University (WSU) helped the City of Tacoma implement best management practices in its plant holding facility (PHF). The PHF is a critical resource for improving open spaces, managing stormwater, and fostering community environmental stewardship throughout Tacoma and Pierce County. It supports urban forestry and natural area restoration by cultivating 8000 native plants and 1000 street trees for planting into restoration sites and neighborhood streets respectively. While many …
An Approach To Model Uncertainty In Fluid Behaviour With Navier-Stokes Equations In Neutrosophic Environment, Muhammad Saeed, Attia Hameed, Neha Andaleeb Khalid, Muhammad Salman Habib
An Approach To Model Uncertainty In Fluid Behaviour With Navier-Stokes Equations In Neutrosophic Environment, Muhammad Saeed, Attia Hameed, Neha Andaleeb Khalid, Muhammad Salman Habib
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
The complex discipline of fluid dynamics examines the behavior of fluids and their interactions with adjacent objects. The Navier-Stokes equations are very important for explaining how fluids move, but they are not linear and often give answers that depend on the starting point and the boundaries. Modeling fluid behavior is challenging due to the inherently chaotic and unpredictable character of fluid dynamics. To deal with unknown or uncertain values in this research, we used neutrosophic logic to look at the Navier-Stokes equations in a new way. Neosophic logic permits the existence of values that are partially true and partially false; …

Leveraging Hypersoft Set To Optimize Livestock In The Era Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Alaa Salem, Mona Mohamed, Nebojsa Bacanin, Mohamed Abouhawwash
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Due to urbanization and industrialization, rapid global change and the potential loss of arable land, agricultural output must rise in production levels and harvest, distribute, and use resources more efficiently. It is believed that using technology on livestock would help meet the expanding population's demand for food. Internet of Things (IoT) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) integration in conventional farming has transformed operations, providing farmers with greater productivity, improved decision-making, and sustainability. We assume that there are enough UAVs to cover the entire pasture, and our goal is to identify the best UAVs. Accordingly, determining the best type of UAVs …

Contact Graphs In Fuzzy And Neutrosophic Graphs, Takaaki Fujita
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Graph Theory is a branch of mathematics dedicated to studying graphs, which depict relationships between objects through vertices and edges. A significant focus in this field is the study of contact graphs, where vertices correspond to sets, and edges represent intersections between those sets. To better model uncertainties in real-world situations, several graph types---such as fuzzy, neutrosophic, and Plithogenic graphs---have been developed. This paper investigates the concept of contact graphs within these frameworks, offering insights into their behavior under various uncertain conditions.

Expanding The Horizons Of Nonagonal Neutrosophic Numbers As A Versatile Framework For Decision-Making And Scientific Applications In Covid-19, Muhammad Naveed Jafar, Kainat Muniba, Hamiden Abd El-Wahed Khalifa, Fahd Jarad
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
In this article, the concept of nonagonal neutrosophic numbers has been introducing in the disjunctive frame of reference. We also proposed the dependency and independency of membership function in regards to nonagonal neutrosophic number. We also introduce a new score function and its computation also formulated in a distinct rational viewpoint. We developed the concept of weighted arithmetic averaging operator and weighted geometric averaging operator for nonagonal neutrosophic numbers. It will open new doors for MCDM and develop the concept with new approaches. Additionally, we analyze the effect of COVID-19 for different ages.
