Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science

Omani fruits were analyzed for their reducing sugar, total sugar contents and some minerals. Among the minerals studied were Ca, Mg, Na, K and P. The amounts of total sugar and reducing sugar were within the range of values reported in the literature for the analysis of fruits conducted elsewhere. The amounts of the minerals differ from the reported literature values. This may be attributed to soil composition, climate and type of cultivar.

Intelligent Systems For Active Program Diagnosis, Haider Ali Ramadhan, Khalil Shihab

Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science

Intelligent program diagnosis systems are computer programs capable of analyzing logical and design-level errors and misconceptions in programs. Upon discovering the errors, these systems provide intelligent feedback and thus guide the users in the problem-solving process. Intelligent program diagnosis systems are classified by their primary means of program analysis. The most distinct split is between those systems that are unable to analyze partial code segments as they are provided by the user and must wait until the entire solution code is completed before attempting any diagnosis, and those that are capable of analyzing partial solutions and providing proper guidance whenever …

Simple Monte Carlo Cellular Models For Surface Evolution, H. H. Al-Barwani, A. Purnama Apr 2025

Simple Monte Carlo Cellular Models For Surface Evolution, H. H. Al-Barwani, A. Purnama

Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science

Monte Carlo cellular simulations are described for some simple surface evolution models. Surface growth is simulated by adding new cells to the surface. The bonding of a new cell arriving to a site on the surface depends on the number of cells present around that site; new cells are more likely to stick at sites with the fewest missing surrounding cells. Applications are given for simulating the propagation of a flame front and the formation of surface landforms; and the (anisotropic) growth of a crystal, where the surface may grow more rapidly in one direction than others.

Recursive Estimation In Capture-Recapture Methods, Lakhdar Aggoun, Robert J. Elliott Apr 2025

Recursive Estimation In Capture-Recapture Methods, Lakhdar Aggoun, Robert J. Elliott

Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science

An important problem in statistical ecology is how to determine the size of an animal population. The best known technique is the capture-recapture technique. A random sample of individuals is captured, tagged in some way and released back into the population. After allowing time for the marked and unmarked individuals to mix sufficiently, a second random sample is taken and the marked ones are observed. Using measure change techniques, we estimate recursively conditional distributions of various quantities.

Effects Of Roadways On Seasonal Movement Strategies And Mate Location Success In An Imperiled Pit Viper (Crotalus Horridus), Dominic Desantis Apr 2025

Effects Of Roadways On Seasonal Movement Strategies And Mate Location Success In An Imperiled Pit Viper (Crotalus Horridus), Dominic Desantis

Academic Affairs

A detailed understanding of animal movement behavior is fundamental to effective conservation and management. Within populations, a diversity of movement strategies can be displayed in search of critical resources, and these strategies are influenced by multiple interacting factors related to individuals and the environment. Mating partners are one critical resource that often serves as a prominent selective force shaping movement during mating seasons. For many large-bodied snakes, such as pit vipers (Viperidae: Crotalinae), male mate-searching movements are the primary determinant of mate location success. During this time, males incur significant risks associated with elevated movement. In an increasingly human-modified world, …

Historical Perspectives On Bloodletting In The Management Of Asthma In Children And Adults, Joudeh B. Freij, Bishara J. Freij

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Background: Current asthma management consists of a combination of drugs with different mechanisms of action. Ancient asthma care, by contrast, focused on loosening the humours using remedies such as drinking animal blood, eating rabbit fat and fox lungs, inhaling or consuming certain herbs and plants, bloodletting (including wet cupping), diet (eating raisins, dried figs, vegetables, barley, capers, bread, cake), steaming, baths, wet compresses, and moderate helpings of wine with dinner. Bloodletting was believed to purge the body of noxious humours that caused human disease and thereby reduce inflammation. Here we address the use of bloodletting in asthma management over the …

Attachment Theory In Adult Romantic Relationships: The Influence Of Childhood Trauma On Adult Attachment Styles And Romantic Relationship Satisfaction, Shelby Bock Apr 2025

Attachment Theory In Adult Romantic Relationships: The Influence Of Childhood Trauma On Adult Attachment Styles And Romantic Relationship Satisfaction, Shelby Bock

Senior Honors Theses

Attachment theory provides a key framework for understanding adult romantic relationships, especially for individuals with a history of childhood trauma. Early adverse experiences, such as emotional abuse and neglect, as well as broader categories of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), can disrupt attachment development, contributing to insecure attachment styles—anxious or avoidant—that influence relationship dynamics in adulthood. This review synthesizes current literature on how childhood trauma contributes to attachment patterns and emotional intimacy, trust, and relationship satisfaction in adult romantic relationships. It also highlights the role of attachment in mediating the effects of childhood trauma on romantic relationships. Finally, the review proposes …

The Diegetic Purpose Of Humor In Superhero Media, Ella Ramsey Apr 2025

The Diegetic Purpose Of Humor In Superhero Media, Ella Ramsey

Honors Projects

Superheroes draw fans in with their fantastic powers, but also their humanizing personalities. Humor is one such trait often used to endear viewers of superhero media to the title characters. However, why do these characters maintain their witty personas and cheerful nature as they fight against evil? This question may seem to have a few simple answers, but there is a lack of research explaining the in-depth psychological reasoning for humor in the context of a superhero’s reality. This study investigates the multiple roles humor can play in a hero’s development as a human being. By studying the psychology of …

Mitochondrial Dysfunction And Parkinson's Disease: A Critical Link, Anika J. Millar Apr 2025

Mitochondrial Dysfunction And Parkinson's Disease: A Critical Link, Anika J. Millar

Senior Honors Theses

Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder, caused by the damage to and death of dopamine-releasing neurons in the brain. The substantia nigra is a major region housing dopaminergic neurons and plays a critical role in motor and cognitive function. When these neurons are compromised, dopamine levels decline, leading to the development of motor and cognitive dysfunction. Current treatments include dopamine precursors, which help to replace dopamine and relieve motor symptoms. However, while there is symptomatic treatment for Parkinson’s disease, there are no preventative therapies or cures. A potential link between mitochondrial dysfunction and Parkinson’s disease has prompted further research. Investigating …

Floral Cues And Foraging Preferences In Various Species Of Wild Bumblebees, Olivia A. Dahl

The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)

There are costs and benefits for plants and their pollinators. Bumblebees play a crucial role in the dynamic plant-pollinator system. Flowers co-evolved with insects, birds, and mammals toward mechanisms that benefited, described from a human perspective, both host and forager. Characteristics such color, olfactory cues, and temperature attract pollinators, with bumblebees showing preferences for blue and yellow flowers, as well as flowers that are warmer. This study aims to answer three questions: 1) How does floral temperature at different times of day predict visit length in bumblebees? 2) Does bumblebee size affect visit length? 3) Is there an interaction between …

Quantifying The Decline In Avian Biodiversity: A Global Crisis And Its Implications For Environmental Education, Canaline Osaka Apr 2025

Quantifying The Decline In Avian Biodiversity: A Global Crisis And Its Implications For Environmental Education, Canaline Osaka

The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)

People care about what they love—and it’s easy to love--and fall in love, with birds. The

opportunities to promote bird diversity are legion, and applicable throughout K-12 education. For example, the Eastern Bluebird needs to nest in the cavities of dead trees, a habitat drastically denuded by large scale farming—or in specialized nesting boxes. A nationwide effort to build and install these boxes has brought the population back to healthy numbers since its 1970 low point. (Once one knows what they look like, one cannot miss these roadside homes—Western Bluebirds also benefit.) Students can also engineer bird houses and deters, …

Living And Dying With Rats (Essay), Trent Mcfury Apr 2025

Living And Dying With Rats (Essay), Trent Mcfury

The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)

It is unlikely that a dystopian work would begin with, “Rats have not been seen for centuries, even in Venice.” [...]

Although many species disturb our peace, destroy our crops, and/or are outright dangerous, the eco-existential scaling of a rat (and mice), broonie or pixie-like, makes it a convenient analogical and projective emblem of invasion and subsequent extermination. That which abundantly reproduces, keenly clusters, transforms our bodies, challenges our wits, follows and then remains, travels and then stays, is also a psyche-mirror.
