The Impact Of Lactoferrin And Iron-Enriched Whey On Iron Absorption, Gastrointestinal Symptoms, And Menstrual Health In Women, Mia Dustin
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Iron is an essential trace mineral involved in oxygen transport, energy metabolism, and cellular function, yet deficiency remains prevalent among women of reproductive age. In the U.S., approximately 20% of women aged 18-45 years fail to meet daily iron requirements due to lack of iron consumption in the diet, menstrual blood loss, or intense exercise, often leading to anemia, fatigue, and cognitive impairment. While ferrous sulfate is a common form of iron supplementation, it frequently causes gastrointestinal discomfort. Researchers have explored lactoferrin, a glycoprotein with immune and iron-binding properties, as an adjunct to traditional supplementation. This study examines the effects …

Creating A Stat2 Knock-Out Rat With Crispr/Cas9 Using I-Gonad, Isabella Dejesus
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Through the use of genetically modified animals, a more holistic understanding of physiologic responses to various diseases and pathologies can be obtained7,19. The STAT2 gene encodes a protein called Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 2 and is an excellent target for genetic manipulation due to its essential role in type I and III interferon signaling pathways11. A member of the STAT family of transcription factors, this protein is directly involved in mediating cellular responses to various cytokines and growth factors, particularly those related to the innate immune response11. While the STAT2 signaling pathway …
Investigation Of Immune/Performance Trade-Offs In Neonate Children's Pythons (Antaresia Childreni), Ellie Hartman
Investigation Of Immune/Performance Trade-Offs In Neonate Children's Pythons (Antaresia Childreni), Ellie Hartman
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Energetic costs and constraints are key considerations when analyzing an organism’s life history and may require trade-offs to be made between different life history traits. One of these trade-offs occurs between investment in immunity and performance. The purpose of this study is to discover if this trade-off influences behavior in neonate Children’s pythons (Antaresia childreni). We hypothesize that snakes undergoing an immune response will have reduced behaviors promoting survival. To test this hypothesis, neonate Children’s pythons were randomly assigned to receive an immune challenge of keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) or a vehicle injection as a control. Two days …

To Bee Or Not To Bee: Investigating Pesticide Behavior Inside And Outside Of Semi-Field Cages, Mallory Bingham
To Bee Or Not To Bee: Investigating Pesticide Behavior Inside And Outside Of Semi-Field Cages, Mallory Bingham
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Bees play an important role in ecosystems and food production through pollination. One such bee, the alfalfa leaf cutting bee (ALCB) is a very efficient pollinator and is essential in alfalfa seed production. However, bees face increasing harm, most notably due to the deleterious effect of pesticides used in agriculture, and much research is dedicated to investigating the extent of effects that pesticides have on different bee populations. One common tool used to study the effects of pesticide exposure on bees is semi-field cages. These cages have some key advantages, such as restricting bee foraging to plots sprayed with pesticides …

Sibship Analysis Of Fall And Spring Spawn Gulf Sturgeon Eggs In The Choctawhatchee River, Florida, Lyric Mccullouch
Honors Theses
The Gulf sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus desotoi) is an anadromous species that inhabits rivers along the northern Gulf of Mexico. Facing challenges from overfishing and habitat alteration, the Gulf sturgeon is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. This study investigated the genetic distinctiveness of fall and spring spawning groups of Gulf sturgeon in the Choctawhatchee River, a critical habitat for the species. In this study, I used microsatellite loci to analyze Gulf sturgeon eggs previously collected in the fall and spring of 2019 and 2020. The goals of this study were to verify the genetic identity of …

Navigating The Challenges Of Coccidioides Surveillance: Insights From The Environment Of El Paso County, Texas, Tanzir Hossain
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Coccidioidomycosis, or Valley fever, is a fungal infection resulting from the inhalation of spores from the Coccidioides species (C. immitis and C. posadasii), native to arid areas of the Western Hemisphere. Coccidioidomycosis presents considerable health hazards and can be fatal. It affects between 206,000 and 360,000 individuals annually, leading to 700 to 1,100 fatalities in the United States alone. In response to these issues, extensive research has concentrated on therapeutic goals for this infectious disease. Nonetheless, more limited research has focused on the environmental detection of its causative fungi, which is crucial for forecasting treatment needs and formulating preventive strategies. …

Investigating Self-Healing Mechanisms In Host-Pathogen Interactions: A Literature Review Of Macrophage Functions In Tuberculosis, Blessing Savusa
Investigating Self-Healing Mechanisms In Host-Pathogen Interactions: A Literature Review Of Macrophage Functions In Tuberculosis, Blessing Savusa
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of mortality, particularly in underdeveloped regions. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is regarded as one of the most successful pathogens due to its ability to evade host immunity and persist within granulomas. Macrophages are the first-line host defenders that engulf Mtb into phagosomes, which initiates lysosomal activity for degradation. However, the virulence factor of Mtb is able to inhibit phagolysosome fusion. The host immune system forms granulomas to contain the mycobacterium at the site of inflammation. This, in turn, causes a necrotic state and causes tissue damage from the prolonged inflammation. Studies suggest that the host's …

"Until There Is Nothing Left:" The Environmental And Social Impact Of Extractivist Industries In Grant County, New Mexico 1852-1999, Benjamin Shultz
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation research expands and deepens our understanding of the environmental and social impact of the extractivist industries in Grant County, New Mexico, from 1852 to 1999. Much of the scholarship around mining in the historiography tends to focus on Arizona and Northern New Mexico, given the centralization of the mining industry in places like Taos and Santa Fe. The impact of the mining industry on the unique ecosystem and people who resided in Grant County, New Mexico, has not been as thoroughly researched by scholars. Thus, this dissertation extends the literature by revealing how the extractivist industries permanently changed …
A Systems Engineering Approach For Mitigating Space Debris In Earth's Orbital Regimes, Manuel Soto
A Systems Engineering Approach For Mitigating Space Debris In Earth's Orbital Regimes, Manuel Soto
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Space debris in Earth's orbital regimes is a complex threat that originates with human space activity and is maintained by Earth's gravitational force. Space debris poses the risk of colliding with and destroying operational space assets. These collisions, in turn, pose the risk of compounding space debris fragments by turning operational space entities involved in collisions into additional space debris. In other words, the space debris impact does not end with a fragment colliding with a space entity. Instead, the collision is a new space-debris birth since the entities colliding are likely to become multiple fragments. Depending on the collision's …
Forensic Search Methods: Comparing Effectiveness And Efficiency In A Grassland Environment, Robert Brown
Forensic Search Methods: Comparing Effectiveness And Efficiency In A Grassland Environment, Robert Brown
Honors Theses
An important aspect of death investigations is the recovery of human remains to determine crucial details such as body identity, time of death, and cause of death. Physical evidence is often moved by elements, such as water, gravity, plants, and scavengers in outdoor crime scenes, making recovery challenging. As a result, forensic scientists have created several search methods to locate dispersed human remains. Previous studies have primarily focused on predicting animal scavenging patterns, but few have compared the performance of forensic search methods in specific environments. This study addresses this area of research by assessing three common search methods in …

Anteroposterior elongation of the vertebrate body plan is driven by convergence and extension (C&E) gastrulation movements in both the mesoderm and neuroectoderm, but how or whether molecular regulation of C&E differs between tissues remains an open question. Using a zebrafish explant model of anteroposterior axis extension, we show that C&E of the neuroectoderm and mesoderm can be uncoupled ex vivo, and that morphogenesis of individual tissues results from distinct morphogen signaling dynamics. Using precise temporal manipulation of BMP and Nodal signaling, we identify a critical developmental window during which high or low BMP/Nodal ratios induce neuroectoderm- or mesoderm-driven C&E, respectively. …

Postoperative atrial fibrillation (poAF) is AF occurring days after surgery, with a prevalence of 33% among patients undergoing open-heart surgery. The degree of postoperative inflammation correlates with poAF risk, but less is known about the cellular and molecular mechanisms driving postoperative atrial arrhythmogenesis. We performed single-cell RNA-seq comparing atrial nonmyocytes from mice with and without poAF, which revealed infiltrating CCR2+ macrophages to be the most altered cell type. Pseudotime trajectory analyses identified Il-6 as a gene of interest driving in macrophages, which we confirmed in pericardial fluid collected from human patients after cardiac surgery. Indeed, macrophage depletion and macrophage-specific Il6ra …

Advanced maternal age (AMA) is defined as a pregnancy in a woman older than 35 years of age. AMA increases the risk for both maternal and neonatal complications, including miscarriage and stillbirth. AMA has also been linked to neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders in the offspring. Recent studies have found that age-associated compositional shifts in the gut microbiota contribute to altered microbial metabolism and enhanced inflammation in the host. We investigated the specific contribution of the maternal microbiome on pregnancy outcomes and offspring behavior by recolonizing young female mice with aged female microbiome prior to pregnancy. We discovered that pre-pregnancy colonization …

A Digital Twin Approach To Job Shop Scheduling: Simulation And Optimization In Anylogic, Alan Alejandro Corral Lopez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In complex manufacturing environments such as job shops, machine breakdowns and maintenance activities can significantly disrupt production flow, leading to delays, bottlenecks, and reduced throughput. This thesis presents the development of a digital twin for a job shop system using AnyLogic simulation software to evaluate the effectiveness of fallback routing logic, where jobs are dynamically rerouted to alternative machines when primary machines are unavailable due to scheduled and unscheduled events. The digital twin replicates real-world job shop conditions, incorporating variable job sequences, machine-specific processing times, and both preventive and corrective maintenance schedules. Two scenarios were compared: a baseline configuration with …

Haematopoietic stem cells maintain blood production throughout life1. Although extensively characterized using the laboratory mouse, little is known about clonal selection and population dynamics of the haematopoietic stem cell pool during murine ageing. We isolated stem cells and progenitors from young and old mice, identifying 221,890 somatic mutations genome-wide in 1,845 single-cell-derived colonies. Mouse stem cells and progenitors accrue approximately 45 somatic mutations per year, a rate only approximately threefold greater than human progenitors despite the vastly different organismal sizes and lifespans. Phylogenetic patterns show that stem and multipotent progenitor cell pools are established during embryogenesis, after which …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation examines the experience of former foster youth as they enter college and attempt to earn a college degree. The Tuition Waiver Program is designed to cover the cost of college beyond any financial aid former foster students receive from the university they are attending. Over 3,000 former foster college students across Texas use the Tuition Waiver Program. However, less than 3% of former foster college students in Texas complete their college degrees (Watt & Faulkner, 2020). A successful college experience for former foster youth provides a firm foundation on which students can continue to grow and develop, gaining …
Intratumoral Fibrin As A Novel Immunomodulatory Factor In Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Mazharul Karim
Intratumoral Fibrin As A Novel Immunomodulatory Factor In Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Mazharul Karim
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In-situ coagulation is a common clinical feature of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) that presents a highly thrombotic and crosslinked insoluble fibrin (x-fibrin)-laden tumor stroma (FibTS). However, the specific impact of FibTS on immune cells behavior remains largely unexplored in this poorly infiltrated tumor. We aimed to elucidate how FibTS in PDAC regulates immune cell infiltration, polarization, and crosstalk that favors immunosuppressive microenvironment and tumor growth. We characterized human PDAC tissues by multiplex immunostaining and checked the spatial distribution of immune cells based on the presence of x-fibrin. We investigated how FibTS influences the infiltration of tumor-associated macrophage (TAM) and T-cell …
Imperial Ideology And Subversive Practice In Arthurian Legend, Emma Katherine Keppler
Imperial Ideology And Subversive Practice In Arthurian Legend, Emma Katherine Keppler
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This project approaches Arthur and Arthurian legend as vital elements in British self-identification from the medieval period onward by examining narratives of national origin in legendary history, romance, and other forms of cultural production. In my readings of these texts, I am concerned with how national identity and otherness are constructed and negotiated in a literary space, how myths of utopian origins rely on the endorsement and glorification of cultures of violence that sustain and justify imperial enterprises in the Middle Ages and beyond. It is my argument that in the absence of actual voices of resistance, romance tropes often …
Rhetorical Hermeneutics After The Posthuman Turn, Michael Noricks
Rhetorical Hermeneutics After The Posthuman Turn, Michael Noricks
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation revisits Steven Mailloux's (1989) concept of rhetorical hermeneutics, according to which persuasion always conditions our interpretive practices. Seeking to bring Mailloux's insights into conversation with rhetorical theory's posthuman turn, my inquiry begins with the following questions: How might posthuman theories of meaning-making allow us to extend or reimagine rhetoric's relation to interpretation? How might recourse to rhetorical hermeneutics help us understand posthuman rhetoric? Can we indeed theorize a posthuman rhetorical hermeneutics? If so, what does it entail? What are its affordances? What are its contexts? How does it affect our understanding of rhetorical situations and the artifacts produced …
Screening Of A Diversity Of Legumes And Non-Legumes Forb Species At Five Strategic Locations Across Utah For The Development Of Smart Foodscapes, Surbhi Verma
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Grass-dominated rangelands in the Western United States often lack sufficient protein for pregnant cows after grasses mature in mid- summer, leading ranchers to rely on expensive feed supplements such as protein cubes or alfalfa hay. The goal of this study was to screen 27 perennial legume and forb species with the potential to remain green into late summer and provide sufficient protein to supplement cows on grass-dominated rangeland. Three experiments were carried out to understand germination of species, plant establishment and persistence at five Utah locations, and agronomic characteristics. The seed of five hard-to-germinate species were studied for the ability …
Optimizing Nutrient Recycling To Achieve Zero–Discharge Management For Controlled Environment Agriculture, Noah James Langenfeld
Optimizing Nutrient Recycling To Achieve Zero–Discharge Management For Controlled Environment Agriculture, Noah James Langenfeld
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Controlled environment agriculture (CEA) allows for human control of one or more environmental factors affecting crop production. Optimizing nutrient management in such systems allows for translation and predictions of sustainable management strategies in the field. These systems will be used to supply fresh food as public and private space agencies are planning to send humans to the Moon and Mars in the near future. Food resupply becomes increasingly difficult as the distance from Earth increases. Plants can be grown off-Earth as a food source, but their growth must be carefully managed to ensure long-term sustainability. I describe a model used …

In education and Applied Behavior Analysis, there is growing demand for well-trained entry-level individuals to deliver behavior interventions. Interactive Computer Training allows trainees to access online instruction with video demonstrations, interactive tasks, and feedback, without a live instructor. This training approach could save valuable training time and money. Prior researchers demonstrated these types of training can teach trainees to correctly use behavior interventions. There are gaps in our understanding of Interactive Computer Trainings that limit its successful use. Few studies measured cost-effectiveness, identified the effective features of Interactive Computer Training (e.g., videos, quizzes, feedback), or trained users to deliver effective …
Color Expressions In Euripides’ Ion, Erik Shelley
Color Expressions In Euripides’ Ion, Erik Shelley
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
This analysis explores color expressions in the play Ion by the ancient Greek playwright Euripides. Because the ancient Greeks experienced color differently, I examined words used in the play, including light, dark, fire, green, water, blood, and gold. These expressions imply different themes and concepts that Euripides uses to portray the duality between his two main characters, Ion and Creusa. This thesis showed how the mother-son pair acts as a foil for the different aspects of color found throughout the play that reflect ancient Greek culture.

This disorder is characterized by multiple congenital anomalies which include intellectual disability, brain malformations, intractable epilepsy, microcephaly, and facial dysmorphia. The most severe symptom of cblX is intractable epilepsy which is 100% penetrant. Our lab developed a zebrafish model with a mutation in the zebrafish hcfc1a ortholog to study the mechanisms underlying seizure phenotypes in cblX. Our laboratory previously showed that mutation of hcfc1a results in increased number and proliferation of neural precursor cells (NPCs) and an increase …
