Deliverance, Beth Odum Walker May 2025

Deliverance, Beth Odum Walker

All Theses

My work explores quilting as a vessel for storytelling, honoring the tradition of women’s craft while examining the intersection of personal and generational history. By repurposing fabric imbued with past lives and memories, I construct pieces that embody both the resilience and fragility of the individuals in my family, capturing their struggles, aspirations, and constraints. Through abstraction, material manipulation, and narrative layering, my quilts function as both historical records and contemporary reflections, bridging the past and present through the tactile language of textile art. In describing a quilt as an object, I am including all material, patterning, orientation, scale, and …

The Rise And Fall Of The Contagious Diseases Acts: An Examination Of The Legislative Influences, Medical Discourse And Repeal Arguments, Elizabeth Henderson May 2025

The Rise And Fall Of The Contagious Diseases Acts: An Examination Of The Legislative Influences, Medical Discourse And Repeal Arguments, Elizabeth Henderson

All Theses

The Contagious Diseases Acts (CDA) were the most important legislative intervention concerning sexuality in the nineteenth century. The CDA was a public health measure passed to address the spread of venereal disease amongst the British Army and Navy, and targeted Britain's most vulnerable women – sex workers – because they were blamed for being the presumed cause and primary mode of spreading venereal disease. This resulted in the legalization of what critics of the CDA would call surgical assault, or instrumental rape, of working-class women suspected of being sex workers. Historians who study sexuality and sex work in Britain have …

The Effects Of Prenatal Cigarette Smoke Exposure On Developmental Milestones, Megan Jacobs May 2025

The Effects Of Prenatal Cigarette Smoke Exposure On Developmental Milestones, Megan Jacobs

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

In Kentucky, a reported 12.7% of mothers smoke cigarettes during pregnancy. Nicotine readily crosses the placental and blood-brain barriers, with fetal blood concentrations reaching 15% higher than maternal levels. By stimulating and desensitizing nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the autonomic nervous system, nicotine disrupts uteroplacental blood flow, potentially altering fetal growth and development.

To investigate the effects of prenatal cigarette smoke exposure (CSE) on developmental milestones, C57Bl6 mice were exposed to either cigarette smoke (CSE, n = 30) or filtered room air (Sham, n = 20) for 3 hours daily from two days before mating until the day before birth. Offspring …

Reinforcement Learning, Modeling Markets, And Professional Basketball Free Agency, Jacob Cohn

Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations

This dissertation presents a reinforcement learning-based approach to modeling and optimizing decision-making in professional basketball free agency and related economic environments. A Markov Decision Process (MDP) framework is introduced to capture the strategic interactions of NBA teams bidding for free agents under budgetary and roster constraints. To address computational scalability challenges, a reinforcement learning (RL) environment is developed, leveraging Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) to approximate optimal policies for team decision-making.

Empirical results demonstrate that the RL agent successfully learns strategic bidding behavior that aligns with dynamic programming benchmarks in simplified settings while scaling effectively to larger, intractable environments. The study …

The Role Of O-Glcnacylation In Mitochondrial Biomass In Bpaecs, Danielle Warila May 2025

The Role Of O-Glcnacylation In Mitochondrial Biomass In Bpaecs, Danielle Warila

Senior Honors Projects

O-GlcNAcylation, a post-translational modification of proteins with sugar molecules, plays an important role in a variety of cellular processes, including energy production. Disrupted regulation of O-GlcNAcylation is associated with the pathology of diabetes and can lead to potential damage to the endothelial cells of blood vessels. The current study investigated the effect of manipulating O-GlcNAcylation on mitochondrial biomass in such endothelial cells. Briefly, bovine pulmonary aortic endothelial cells (BPAECs) were grown to confluency and then exposed to pharmaceutical agents that either impair (OSMI-1) or enhance (Thiamet-G) O-GlcNAcylation. Following 24 hours of treatment, the BPAECs were then stained with MitoTracker™ fluorescent …

Exploring The Dynamics Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus Diversity In Developing Aquaculture Oyster Microbiomes, Benjamin John Wasson May 2025

Exploring The Dynamics Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus Diversity In Developing Aquaculture Oyster Microbiomes, Benjamin John Wasson

Master's Theses and Capstones

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a genetically diverse marine bacterium and the leading cause of seafood-borne bacterial illness in the United States. While most strains are harmless, some can cause illness. As oyster aquaculture grows in the Northeast, particularly in New Hampshire’s Great Bay Estuary (GBE), understanding the dynamics of V. parahaemolyticus population diversity and persistence is critical for public health and sustainable aquaculture production. This work investigates two major research questions: whether standard bacterial enumeration methods introduce bias when evaluating diversity of V. parahaemolyticus populations, and how environmental factors influence V. parahaemolyticus acquisition and microbiome development in juvenile oysters. We first …

Exploring Mimicry And Visual Communication In Woodpeckers: A Field Study Utilizing 3d-Printed Models, Lauren M. Smith May 2025

Exploring Mimicry And Visual Communication In Woodpeckers: A Field Study Utilizing 3d-Printed Models, Lauren M. Smith

Biology Theses

The evolution of similar phenotypes poses an interesting challenge in evolutionary biology. While divergent ecologies may drive differing morphology, physiology, or behavior, similar phenotypes are often due to similar ecology or selection for mimicry. One prominent case of mimetic phenotypes is found in hairy and downy woodpeckers. While several hypotheses might explain the hairy-downy mimicry complex, I aimed to assess the idea that downy woodpeckers benefit from resembling hairy woodpeckers. To test this hypothesis, I used 3D-printed models of various woodpecker species in the field. These models were painted with colors that resemble woodpecker species. The experimental conditions were 3D …

Pollination Synchrony Along A Great Lakes Thermal Gradient, Joe Armstrong May 2025

Pollination Synchrony Along A Great Lakes Thermal Gradient, Joe Armstrong

Biology Theses

Pollination is an essential mutualistic interaction between plants and animals. Often agricultural crops rely on successful pollination to provide profitable and nutrient rich harvests. Successful pollination requires synchrony between flowers and pollinators. Western New York with its proximity to the Great Lakes has benefited as a Climate refugia; however, recent climate change and increased temperature variation have threatened regional fruit crops. In this thesis, I explored the synchrony between native pollinators, non-native pollinators, and apple flowering along a coastal to inland gradient for farms in Niagara County. I measured temperature, evaluated apple flower phenology, and harvested pollinators during the Spring …

The Effect Of Great Lake Thermal Gradients On Pollinating Hymenoptera And Diptera, Marcus Z. Kenline

Biology Theses

Abstract

Thermal gradients created by large water bodies can significantly influence ectothermic insect behavior and community structure. This study examined the effect of Lake Ontario’s springtime thermal gradients on the distribution and abundance of two key pollinator taxa—Hymenoptera and Diptera—within an agricultural landscape. Blue vane traps were deployed at ground level and 1-meter height across 24 plots along three inland transects in a Lake Ontario coastal orchard. More than 14,000 insects were collected between April and June 2024, including 2,245 Diptera and 1,137 Hymenoptera. Maximum temperatures increased with distance from the lake and with trap height, whereas Dipteran abundance increased …

Calming Music As An Emotion Regulation Technique In Response To A Traumatic Sexual Assault Narrative, Mia A. Iandolo May 2025

Calming Music As An Emotion Regulation Technique In Response To A Traumatic Sexual Assault Narrative, Mia A. Iandolo

Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Experiencing a sexual assault often results in lasting psychological trauma that inhibits the person’s ability to function, so coping strategies are needed to reduce those symptoms. This study was done to understand the effect of listening to calming music (vs silence) on both anxiety levels and memory recall following the description of a sexual assault. It was hypothesized that listening to calming music would decrease both anxiety and memory levels in a manner that the association between music and memory would be at least partially mediated by anxiety levels. Participants (N=99; 68% female; 84% White; 87% heterosexual) came …

Extending Cover Crop Growing Window To Improve The Health Of Environmentally Sensitive Soils, Noshin Ara Tunazzina May 2025

Extending Cover Crop Growing Window To Improve The Health Of Environmentally Sensitive Soils, Noshin Ara Tunazzina

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Sloping and sandy soils are highly susceptible to degradation. The health of these soils could be improved with cover crops (CCs). However, CC effectiveness in improving soil health mainly depends on CC biomass production, which is often low in temperate regions. The question is: how can we increase CC biomass production? Lengthening the CC growing window can be a potential strategy. This study assessed how 1) interseeded and terminated early (2-3 weeks before crop planting) CC, 2) interseeded and terminated late (at crop planting) CC, 3) drilled (after harvest) and terminated early CC, 4) drilled and terminated late CC, and …

This study investigates the effects of behavioral factors on the adoption of insect-based feed technology among livestock farmers in Cameroon. We use partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to analyze primary data collected from 131 poultry and fish farmers in the Centre region of Cameroon. Our findings reveal that 18.32 % of the surveyed farmers are users of insect-based feed, whereas 81.68 % are non-users. We also show that livestock farmers’ attitudes directly influence the decision to use insect-based feed. Our findings suggest that perceived behavior control and subjective norms indirectly reinforce the decision to use insect-based feed-through attitudes. …

Don’T Be A Big Baby: Phenotypic Novelty In The Facultative Paedomorph Ambystoma Talpoideum., Andrew S. Kanes May 2025

Don’T Be A Big Baby: Phenotypic Novelty In The Facultative Paedomorph Ambystoma Talpoideum., Andrew S. Kanes

All Theses

This thesis explores the relationship between heterokairy and the skin microbiota of amphibians, specifically focusing on the facultatively paedomorphic salamander, Ambystoma talpoideum. Heterokairy refers to variations in developmental timing that generate phenotypic novelty within life stages. The first chapter investigates how reordering metamorphosis relative to sexual maturation affects the skin microbiota in this species. By sampling different life stages—larval, paedomorphic, and metamorphic—results show the emergence of novel microbial combinations, resulting from both microbial gain and loss in the heterokairic paedomorphic stage. These findings suggest that changes in microbial communities may lead to phenotypic novelty and have broader eco-evolutionary implications. …

Despite the abundance of MHealth apps currently available for public use, few include virtual agents. Moreover, it is unclear which virtual agent features within mental health apps may be particularly beneficial in providing a positive user experience. The current study sought to evaluate how features of virtual agents, such as animation and …

Novel Methods For Assessing And Prioritizing Road-Stream Crossings For Aquatic Organism Passage, Lesley E. Twiner May 2025

Novel Methods For Assessing And Prioritizing Road-Stream Crossings For Aquatic Organism Passage, Lesley E. Twiner

All Theses

Anthropogenic barriers such as dams and culverts have led to riverine habitat fragmentation and decreased fish diversity worldwide. Low-head structures such as culverts are far more abundant than large dams and may have a larger cumulative impact on river connectivity. Many efforts to inventory road crossing barriers and prioritize removal and restoration efforts do not consider temporal variation in flow. We used cameras to gain continuous water level monitoring data to quantify the relationship between precipitation events and outlet drop height. In the spring of 2024, we selected 25 culvert sites in upstate South Carolina and set up cameras to …

Assessing The Viability Of A Proposed Third-Party Reusable Foodware System: An Environmental And Economic Comparison, Margaret Milani

All Theses

The United States generates 73 million tons of plastic waste annually, with over 6% attributed to the restaurant industry. The EPA recommends that restaurants reduce their plastic waste by transitioning to reusable foodware items. Previous studies have shown that using a single reusable foodware item, such as a cup, can result in lower environmental impacts and greater economic benefits compared to single-use plastic alternatives. However, the upfront costs of purchasing reusables, commercial dishwashers, and other associated expenses remain significant barriers for restaurants, leading many to continue using single-use plastic foodware. This study aims to analyze and compare the environmental impacts …

Effects Of Common Herbicides On Organismal Interactions, Robert Chamberlin May 2025

Effects Of Common Herbicides On Organismal Interactions, Robert Chamberlin

All Theses

Pesticides are applied to agricultural lands to prevent undesirable weeds, animal pests, and fungi from harming crops and reducing crop yields. Pesticides are used in croplands at increasing rates around the world and have become an essential component of farming in recent decades. Often, rain, wind, and soil permeation move pesticides from farmlands to natural environments. Such contamination of natural environments by pesticides may threaten species by altering their behaviors, bodily functions, and the ways in which individuals interact. Atrazine and glyphosate are among the most widely used herbicides around the world and are useful in eliminating weeds, primarily in …
