Neuro-Immune Regulation Of Feeding Behavior And Alcohol Intoxication In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Kamya Kiranbhai Shah
Neuro-Immune Regulation Of Feeding Behavior And Alcohol Intoxication In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Kamya Kiranbhai Shah
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and obesity are major public health concerns, contributing to more than 28 million deaths annually. Despite extensive research, the mechanisms underlying excessive alcohol and food consumption remain incompletely understood. Emerging evidence suggests that neuro-immune crosstalk plays a pivotal role in feeding and alcohol-induced behaviors, with inflammation as a key pathological hallmark. Toll-like receptors (TLRs), traditionally recognized for their role in innate immunity, have recently been implicated in modulating neural responses to ethanol. However, the mechanisms of how TLR signaling influences feeding and alcohol-related behaviors remain largely unknown. To address this gap, we leveraged Caenorhabditis elegans (C. …

Life Cycle Analysis Of Cosmetic Products -- Assessing Environmental Sustainability And Potential Impacts, Karina Magro Machado
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The cosmetic industry has a significant environmental footprint due to its reliance on water, energy, petrochemical-derived ingredients, and plastic-based packaging. This study performs a cradle-to-grave Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to evaluate the environmental impacts of three cosmetic products: CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion, bareMinerals Gen Nude Powder Blush, and Gillette Foamy Regular Shave Cream. The analysis was conducted using OpenLCA software and free databases, modeling each product across raw materials, packaging, manufacturing, transportation, use and end-of-life phases. The results showed that the shave cream had the highest environmental burden to three out of the four categories, especially in consumption and carbon …
Tracking Fall Migration With The Motus Wildlife Tracking System: The Fate Of Window-Struck And Captive-Raised Passerines, Cailin O'Connor
Tracking Fall Migration With The Motus Wildlife Tracking System: The Fate Of Window-Struck And Captive-Raised Passerines, Cailin O'Connor
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Many species of North American passerines migrate along the Atlantic flyway in the fall to reach winter habitats in the southeastern United States, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Birds face many perils along their journeys including window strikes, which kill over one billion birds per year in the United States alone. Some birds survive the impact and may continue their migration. These birds may suffer delayed mortality or show aberrant migration due to injuries. This research seeks to understand if window-struck birds that initially survive bird-building collisions survive into the future and, if so, if they migrate effectively. …

The Monsters Are Due On Hillside Avenue: Paul Robeson And The Racialization Of The Peekskill Riots Of 1949, Joshua Dellacruz
History Honors Program
On August 27, 1949, a burning cross pierced the night sky in the quiet hills of Westchester County. As Howard Fast later recounted in Peekskill USA: There was a moment of silent cessation, and one of the men leaped up on the truck and cried, 'A cross is burning!' We could only see the glare, but the symbolic meaning was not lost upon us. In the sweet land the movement had been rounded out; the burning cross, the symbol of all that is rotten and evil in our land had blessed us. Our night was complete and we could do …
Women In The Environmental Movement: An Examination Of Maternalistic Rhetoric And Its Relationship To Modern Environmentalism In The 20th Century, Danielle Howie
History Honors Program
From 1942 to 1953, the Hooker Chemical Company decided that an abandoned canal in Niagara Falls was the perfect place to dump 22,000 tons of toxic chemical waste, a common disposal practice that was largely unregulated by the local government. The company covered the 16 acres of hazardous waste with clay and sold it to the Niagara Falls Board of Education in 1953 for one dollar. With a warning included in the property deed that mentioned the presence of chemical waste, the company was excluded from all future liability.2 In the decades to follow, a suburban community would flower around …
Iran-Contra And The Memory Of Vietnam: Human Rights, Covert Operations, And The National Security Council, Matthew Sarcinella
Iran-Contra And The Memory Of Vietnam: Human Rights, Covert Operations, And The National Security Council, Matthew Sarcinella
History Honors Program
In December of 1972, President Richard Nixon ordered the bombing of North Vietnam, beginning on December 18th and lasting until the 30th. During this period 20,000 tons of bombs were dropped, resulting in the deaths of thousands of Vietnamese. The bombings would soon be known as the “12 Days of Christmas.” Major General Richard Secord, “master of covert operations” sat back and watched as North Vietnam was nearly destroyed. There was nothing that Vietnam could do to combat the U.S. military. Being in Secord’s position, he understood better than anyone that this was far more than a mere phenomenon. For …
Symptomatic Treatment Of Cannabis Withdrawal Syndrome: A Review Of The Existing Literature, Aria Sen, Dale Shober
Symptomatic Treatment Of Cannabis Withdrawal Syndrome: A Review Of The Existing Literature, Aria Sen, Dale Shober
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Despite its public reputation as a recreational substance that does not cause physical withdrawal symptoms, cannabis withdrawal syndrome (CWS) was added to the DSM-5 in 2013. Existing research would suggest that almost half of regular cannabis users will experience symptoms such as mood symptoms, insomnia, and gastrointestinal distress. For more than 20 years, the rates of cannabis use have continued to trend upward due to expanding legislation on the recreational use of marijuana. Currently, there are no FDA approved treatments for CWS. Considering this trend, the lack of a well-formed treatment protocol for CWS will have a growing impact on …

Volatile Anesthetic Exposure During Organogenesis (Weeks 6-9): Implications For Fetal Brain Development, Cheryce Daniel, Kylon Coombs
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Organogenesis, particularly during gestational weeks 6 through 9, represent a critical window for fetal brain development. During this period, neurogenesis, neural tube closure and synaptic organization are actively occurring. Disruption of these processes, especially from exogenous agents, can result in lasting developmental consequences.
The U.S Food and Drug Administration has issued warnings regarding the use of anesthetic agents such as isoflurane, sevoflurane, and desflurane. Noting the potential risk of neurotoxic effects on the developing brain. This warning is particularly highlighted when administered drugs are present for long periods of time or during repeated procedures. The goal of this literature review …

Executive function is the control of multiple higher order cognitive processes that include attention, working memory, and cognitive flexibility. Cognitive flexibility is the ability to shift behavioral strategies
in response to changing environmental demands and task complexity. This cognitive modality is often impaired in many neuropsychiatric disorders like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Deficits in cognitive flexibility are associated with dysregulation of the catecholamines, norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine (DA) within the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Atomoxetine (ATX), a non-stimulant NE reuptake inhibitor, elevates levels of NE and DA in the PFC by inhibiting the norepinephrine transporter (NET). ATX is used to …

Accelerated Tumor Growth And Lymphatic Spread Of Transplantable Melanomas In Tumor Necrosis Factor(Tnf)-Transgenic Mice, Catherine F. Alapatt, Robert Hughes, Roger Sheffmaker, Gillian Mcguire, Daniel Deegan, Igor Kuzin, Andrea Bottaro
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Melanoma is the fifth most common cancer among American adults, with significant morbidity and mortality at 5 years remaining >60% for patients with stage IV disease. The malignancy is due to the transformation of melanocytes, with one of the major risk factors being ultraviolet light exposure. Although as many as one in five human cancers have been linked to chronic inflammation, the role of inflammatory signals in melanoma growth and metastasis remains poorly understood.
Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-transgenic (TNFtg) mice are a well-established model of chronic systemic inflammation, with involvement of joints and other organ systems. To assess the effect …

Frequency Modulation Of Deep Brain Stimulation Targeting The Periaqueductal Gray: Effects On Pain Perception And Autonomic Regulation, Jack Hennen, Avneet Chawla, Jared Garfinkle, Wen Hao Luo
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Introduction:
The periaqueductal gray (PAG) is a midbrain structure, and effective target for deep brain stimulation (DBS), involved in the modulation of a multitude of sensory and autonomic processes. It has distinct functional columnar organization, with each column playing its own role in alteration of the body’s ability to respond to pain and stressful stimuli.
Background:
Research regarding the effects of DBS on the PAG has shown the four main subregions of the PAG: the dorsomedial PAG (dmPAG), dorsolateral PAG (dlPAG), lateral PAG (lPAG), and ventrolateral PAG(vlPAG), produce various physiologic outputs when stimulated. These outputs are region and frequency dependent. …

Chemical Exposures In Utero: Phthalates And Congenital Heart Defects, Demi Poulathas
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Background: Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are the most common type of birth defect. Approximately 80% of CHDs have unknown causes, and phthalates may play a contributing role. Phthalates are ubiquitous environmental chemicals used as plasticizers in a wide range of products, including cosmetics and electronic devices. After entering the body, phthalates bind to the progesterone receptor, which is necessary for fetal development. While multiple studies have explored environmental factors in CHD development, few have examined the effects of phthalates on CHDs in humans. Methods: A literature review was conducted to investigate the relationship between parental occupational phthalate exposure and the …

Evaluating Cannabigerol As A Therapeutic Agent In Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Michael J. Viereckl
Evaluating Cannabigerol As A Therapeutic Agent In Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Michael J. Viereckl
Master's Theses
Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is a prolific disease worldwide, with rising incidence and limited treatment options. The disease is progressive, what begins as simple lipid congestion within the cells of the liver eventually leads to incitement of inflammatory reactions and destruction of the liver which can further develop into cancer. Epidemiological data suggests that Cannabis use is associated with reduced incidence of NAFLD, and relatively recent changes in the plants legal status now affords us with the opportunity to investigate unstudied cannabinoids in the context of NAFLD. Further, growing popularity of these bioactive compounds as supplements warrants investigation into …

Becoming Sephardic: Historical Consciousness And Emergent Ethnoreligious Identification In New Mexico, Sarah Leiter
Anthropology ETDs
In recent years, an increasing number of Hispanic Catholic New Mexicans have discovered that they descend from Iberian Jewish victims of the Spanish Inquisition. For some, this new information has prompted them to identify as Jewish in various ways. However, many have faced considerable difficulty in gaining recognition of their newfound ethnoreligious ancestry among family members, normative Jewish communities, and the Spanish and Portuguese governments that offered reparative citizenship to Sephardic (Iberian Jewish) descendants. In this ethnographic context, this dissertation explores how shifting understandings of religious identity and ancestral pasts affect identification practices in the present. Drawing on theoretical analyses …
