Reconstructing Diets In Iron Age Ashkelon: A Stable Isotope Analysis, Delaney Ballard
Reconstructing Diets In Iron Age Ashkelon: A Stable Isotope Analysis, Delaney Ballard
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
Diet can represent how different individuals within a population may be affected by famine, drought, or the fall of an empire. Bioarchaeologists observe patterns in human diet--and consequently, human experience--through generalized reconstructions of consumption via faunal and human skeletal remains. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes are an effective and accurate way of learning what past individuals consumed. By analyzing the stable carbon and nitrogen values derived from collagen in human bones, bioarchaeologists can ascertain the primary protein source of a person’s diet. This thesis used the theoretical framework of structural vulnerability and stable isotope analysis on secondary data to describe …
The First Amendment And The Commencement Provocateur, Duncan Hosie
The First Amendment And The Commencement Provocateur, Duncan Hosie
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
This Article explores an untheorized area of First Amendment doctrine: students’ graduation speeches at public or private universities that embrace free speech principles, either by state statute, state constitutional law, or internal policy. Responding to recent graduation speech controversies, it develops a two-tier theory that reconciles a multiplicity of values, including students’ expressive interests, universities’ institutional interests in curating commencement ceremonies and preventing reputational damage and political reprisals, and the interests of captive audiences in avoiding speech they deem offensive or profane. The Article challenges the prevailing view that university students’ graduation speeches implicate individual First Amendment rights. It develops …
But For A Free Press: A Response To Press Freedom Skeptics, Patrick J. Charles, Kevin Francis O'Neill
But For A Free Press: A Response To Press Freedom Skeptics, Patrick J. Charles, Kevin Francis O'Neill
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
This Article is divided into three Parts. Part I will outline the history-in-law case for why the historical record sufficiently supports recognizing distinct constitutional press freedoms. Part II then provides a history-in-law response to some of the most common arguments made by press freedom skeptics as to why distinct constitutional press freedoms should not be recognized by the courts. Lastly, Part III makes the case for why the recognition of distinct constitutional press freedoms should become a jurisprudential reality and provides a roadmap to accomplish this.

Hunting For Meaningful Boundaries: Virginia's Dog Retrieval Statute And Defining Per Se Regulatory Takings Under Cedar Point, Mason Miller
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
This Note will begin with a summary of the [Cedar Point Nursery v. Hassid] decision. Next, it will provide an overview of Virginia’s dog retrieval statute and discuss a recent case challenging the same. The Note will then analyze the statute by applying the Cedar Point standard, with special attention given to the exceptions, to determine if the law constitutes a per se taking. Finally, the Note will conclude by exploring some implications of the analysis, again emphasizing the effect of the amorphous exceptions.

Revisiting Geography And Sovereignty In The Digital Age, Melvin J. Kelley Iv
Revisiting Geography And Sovereignty In The Digital Age, Melvin J. Kelley Iv
Connecticut Law Review
Fair housing advocates have already brought successful lawsuits challenging the use of property technology (“PropTech”) where it has been found to perpetuate or replicate discriminatory practices in a range of contexts including the use of automated screening tools to evaluate prospective tenants. While substantive interventions in unlawful exclusions and differential treatment via PropTech are laudatory, this Article argues that these steps do not go far enough and moreover, that insufficient attention has been paid to the procedural implications of the federal Fair Housing Act (“FHA”) as a source of ex ante enforcement.
The nation’s first fair housing law, the 1866 …

The Fight Against Red Swamp Crayfish (Procambarus Clarkii): Examination Of The Implementation And Efficiency Of Intensive Trapping And The Winner-Loser Effect As Management Techniques, Emily Klimczak
Great Lakes Center Masters Theses
Aquatic invasive species are not native to a location and have negative impacts on their surrounding environments. Crayfish invasions have been documented worldwide, but none are as widespread as the red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). Red swamp crayfish currently are found in over 40 countries globally and are invasive on every continent, except Antarctica. Outside of their native range, impacts include reduced native crayfish abundance, loss of macrophytes, increased disease transmission, loss of native snails and other macroinvertebrates, and damage to dykes and paddies. Attempted management techniques for the red swamp crayfish include habitat modification, male sterilization via …

Butterfly Effects: Women And Criminal Law, Pavithra Rajendran
Washington International Law Journal
Through a comparative analysis of the criminal laws of Sri Lanka and the United States, this paper examines how Sri Lanka’s legal framework on sexual offenses often hinders women’s access to justice and reinforces systemic gender discrimination. Recognizing the structural constraints inherited from older common law traditions, it underscores the potential for reform through targeted, gradual changes, drawing on developments in modern common law in the United States and relevant international legal standards. The discussion unfolds in three parts: first, a feminist critique of exiting criminal laws in postcolonial; common law systems such as Sri Lanka’s; second, a comparative analysis …

Using A Process Evaluation In Extension Programming: Takeaways For Teams, Cristina Connolly, Jeantyl Norze, Stacey F. Stearns
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Health fields use process evaluations to measure how closely an intervention aligns with its intended delivery. Despite their potential for improving Cooperative Extension programming and impacts, process evaluations are not widely used outside the medical sciences. We adapted the process evaluation framework for Extension use. The components assess project components such as content, dose delivered, dose received, and reach, as well as moderating factors such as quality of delivery, participant responsiveness, complexity, facilitation strategy, recruitment, and context. The modified process evaluation framework was used to assess an Extension project in the Northeast region of the U.S. Extension teams in the …
In The Shadow Of Justice: How The Mythos Of The Batman Balances Major Ethical Theories And Demonstrates The Pursuit Of Ideal Justice, Camille Bewley
In The Shadow Of Justice: How The Mythos Of The Batman Balances Major Ethical Theories And Demonstrates The Pursuit Of Ideal Justice, Camille Bewley
Honors Theses
For more than eighty years, the Batman character has exhibited a unique synthesis of major theories of Justice, and through his experiences as a vigilante, exemplified the pursuit of the ideal virtue of Justice. Because virtue requires a lived example to be understood, Batman is one of the foundational stories fulfilling this need for one of America’s prominent pillars. Within the horror of Gotham City–a corrupt, fictional society–Batman’s actions as a vigilante, walking a tightrope to maintain morality even above the law might not only be justified, but necessary. The Batman’s nature, balancing ethical theories and maintaining hope in the …

Systems Of Survivance: Exploring Armenia's Ancient Past Through Dungeons & Dragons, Jango Janigian
English Honors Theses
Systems of Survivance: Exploring Armenia’s Ancient Past Through Dungeons and Dragons is an English Honors and Classics undergraduate thesis that brings the hidden voices of Armenia’s past into dialogue with the present. Opening with an exploration of D&D and a reflection on the field of Ancient Studies from an Armenian-American perspective, Janigian questions the priorities of “Classics” and its amplification of Eurowestern voices. This thesis draws inspiration from the fantasy anthology Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel, where a team of writers tell folkloric stories of their cultures through a D&D setting and adventure. Likewise, Janigian provides scholars and tabletop …
The Racial Justice Act: A Real Solution Or A Just Step In The Right Direction?, Addison Lyons
The Racial Justice Act: A Real Solution Or A Just Step In The Right Direction?, Addison Lyons
UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice
The American criminal legal system is built upon racism and inequality. Some effort has been made to critique and correct the impact of those legacies. Although many steps have been taken, racism is far from erased from the legal apparatus. It demands contemporary solutions to contemporary legal dynamics. One of the attempts is the California Racial Justice Act of 2020 (RJA). The RJA has sought to remedy these challenges with a more robust understanding of how racism operates within the criminal legal system. Although the RJA appears to reflect a more nuanced understanding of how race operates, I argue that …
Procedural Generated World With History Simulation And 3d Map, Xuanchen Shen
Procedural Generated World With History Simulation And 3d Map, Xuanchen Shen
Programming Theses and Dissertations
The procedurally generated world with history simulation tool dynamically generates customizable, seed-driven virtual worlds through algorithmic processes. Using Voronoi diagrams (constructed via Fortune’s algorithm) for spatial partitioning, it creates diverse geographic features such as lands, oceans, and heights. Climate systems, hydrology (rivers, precipitation), and temperature data are procedurally derived from the terrain data. The tool further simulates sociopolitical dynamics, including population distribution, cultural evolution, religious spread, and diplomatic interactions between procedurally generated nations. Cities, towns, roads, and products emerge organically based on province data.
Users can interactively modify generated worlds—adjusting province geographic data, reshaping cultural or religious distribution, or changing …

Characterizing The Medial Forebrain Bundle In Adolescents With Anhedonic Depression, Tina Nguyen
Characterizing The Medial Forebrain Bundle In Adolescents With Anhedonic Depression, Tina Nguyen
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Adolescent depression has quickly grown in prevalence, yet the underlying neuropathology remains poorly understood. Anhedonia–the diminished ability to experience pleasure–is a core symptom of melancholic depression. Early identification of biomarkers associated with anhedonic depression could help mitigate the severity of the disorder by enhancing treatment efficacy. Blunted functionality of the nucleus accumbens (NAcc), the reward center of the brain, and abnormal dopaminergic activity in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) have both been linked to depression. Furthermore, glutamatergic input from the hypothalamus modulates the VTA which in turn, downregulates dopamine release in the NAcc. However, there is limited evidence supporting that …
Changes In The Androgen Signaling Pathway Caused By Gut Parasite Cryptosporidium Parvum, Aarushi Aalok Sheth
Changes In The Androgen Signaling Pathway Caused By Gut Parasite Cryptosporidium Parvum, Aarushi Aalok Sheth
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
The molecular mechanisms driving prostate cancer initiation remain under investigation; however, studies have shown that the androgen receptor (AR) signaling pathway plays a central role in prostate cancer progression. The AR is a regulator of prostate cell growth, differentiation, and survival and the aberrant signaling of AR is implicated in the progression of prostate cancer. Studies of Androgen signaling pathway in connection with the gut parasite C.parvum revealed direct changes in the signaling pathway of androgen which could potentially lead to the initiation of Prostate Cancer. Analysis of the prostate samples collected from twenty JAX Swiss Outbred mice gave different …
The Impact Of Maternal Age On The Expression Of Transgenerational Plasticity In Daphnia Pulicaria, Calvin Nguyen
The Impact Of Maternal Age On The Expression Of Transgenerational Plasticity In Daphnia Pulicaria, Calvin Nguyen
2025 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Transgenerational plasticity refers to heritable, non-genetic changes in phenotype that persist across multiple generations and can enhance offspring survivability in variable environments. In Daphnia, increasing maternal age has been associated with maladaptive plasticity. To investigate this relationship, six clones were collected from two Wisconsin lakes and acclimated to laboratory conditions through a common garden rearing process. For each clone, ten replicates were generated and evenly divided between young (clutches 2–4) and old (clutches 5–8) maternal age groups. Offspring were exposed to three dietary treatments for three experimental generations: one fed only green algae, one fed only cyanobacteria (a nutritionally …

How Conceptual Artists Create Fictional And Immersive Worlds, Rachel C. Hollins
2025 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
When creating media for entertainment, such as animated shows, movies, video games, etc., conceptual artists utilize a process called worldbuilding. Worldbuilding is defined as the integration of fictional environments, species, props, and civilizations that create an immersive world. However, research about real world elements is often not addressed enough when creating conceptual worlds. Therefore, this creative project aims to define how conceptual artists create believable fictional worlds while showcasing the research behind the process. First, research is conducted about the real world. This includes choosing and studying the environmental, cultural, social, architectural, and biological aspects, which will act as a …

2025 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
RNA interference (RNAi) is a gene regulatory mechanism that is conserved across all animal species, including humans and the microscopic nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans. Many studies have identified the RNAi pathway factors and dissected the regulatory mechanisms of RNAi pathways, but there is little understanding of how the RNAi pathways themselves are regulated. Previously, Rogers and Phillips identified a feedback loop mediated by a pair of small RNA sensors, Sensor of siRNAs-1 (sosi-1) and eri-6[e-f], embedded within the genomic locus of a small RNA biogenesis factor, ERI-6/7. In this feedback motif, loss of small RNA-mediated silencing of …

2025 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Methods of knowledge transfer that rely primarily on visual and/or auditory formats do not effectively convey context-specific or implicit skills, known as tacit skills. This limits knowledge transfer. In this work, the use of customizable pitch captions and spatial audio vibration captions is proposed to aid in conveying this tacit knowledge for neon glass bending video tutorials. Such a system is designed to provide users with greater control and support, which may maximize the information they obtain from, improve the autonomy they have with, and experience they have with a learning tool. As such, a system interface was developed that …

Elucidating The Role Of Transposable Element Derived Gene, Dplg3, In Drosophila Melanogaster, Kaisy A. Martinez
2025 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
A big fraction of most eukaryotic genomes is comprised of transposable elements (TEs). TEs are mobile genetic sequences often causing deleterious effects as they increase in copy number. On rare occasions, TEs can undergo molecular domestication, where the TE proteins are co-opted by the host to serve cellular functions. In Drosophila melanogaster, domestication from PIF/Harbinger TEs has resulted in five Drosophila PIF-Like Genes (DPLG1-4 and 8). This study focuses on investigating the function of DPLG3. In DPLG3 knock out lines, DPLG3-KO, a fraction of the progeny shows an abnormal gonad phenotype. We sought to confirm …

2025 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Rural communities in Texas face significant barriers to healthcare access, including geographic isolation, limited healthcare facilities, and shortages of healthcare providers, which exacerbate health disparities and contribute to poorer health outcomes (Bennett et al., 2019; Jafri et al., 2024). This study examines healthcare access disparities between rural and urban areas in Texas, focusing on the role of telehealth and its impact on vulnerable populations, such as older adults and cardiovascular patients. Regions of Texas were categorized into rural, metropolitan, and metroplex areas to analyze variations in healthcare outcomes and access. Rural areas, defined as those with populations under 200,000, struggle …
Assessing The Prevalence Of Ehrlichia Spp. In Ticks Associated With Canids In Arkansas, Eva J. Berryhill
Assessing The Prevalence Of Ehrlichia Spp. In Ticks Associated With Canids In Arkansas, Eva J. Berryhill
Animal Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Canine ehrlichiosis is a disease that is commonly seen in dogs. In previous studies, the southeastern part of the United States has been identified as an area of high prevalence. Arkansas was included in the region where the prevalence is high. Changes in climate, household income, and tick population were identified as factors contributing to this high prevalence. Canine ehrlichiosis is caused by three Ehrlichia spp., which are E. canis, E. ewingii, and E. chaffeensis. Ticks are responsible for transmitting the disease, specifically R. sanguineus, D. variabilis, and A. americanum. For this study, the goal was to determine the prevalence …
