Sustainable Process Valorization For Bioactives From Invasive Plants Environmental Burden And Their Efficacy As Antimicrobial Agents, Shamprasad Br
Sustainable Process Valorization For Bioactives From Invasive Plants Environmental Burden And Their Efficacy As Antimicrobial Agents, Shamprasad Br
Theses and Dissertations
Agri-food industries produce large quantities of fruit waste which are usually discarded and one such major beverage juice waste is Citrus waste. Likewise, invasive plants like Prosopis juliflora, which is richly distributed across Tamil Nadu, are underutilized for secondary metabolites/bioactives isolation. Halophytes are another rich source of bioactives present around mangrove forests and distributed in the salt rich marshy land.
- Separation of phenylpropanoids from the Citrus waste through solvent extraction and pH-assisted precipitation was developed. The PPCM precipitated (phenylpropanoids form Citrus medica) were analysed by HPTLC and were found to contain Rutin, Naringin, Quercetin-3-beta-glycoside, Chlorogenic acid, Ferulic acid and optimization …

The Menstrual Cycle And Exercise Performance: A Literature Review, Reagan E. Burchill
The Menstrual Cycle And Exercise Performance: A Literature Review, Reagan E. Burchill
Honors Thesis
This literature review will examine the current research investigating the relationship between the female menstrual cycle, exercise performance, and exercise instruction. The menstrual cycle is a physiological series of events that includes specific hormones at each stage. These hormones may play a role in how females recover from exercise. This is particularly significant when considering the hormonal fluctuations across the female menstrual cycle, which influence recovery, injury risk, and exercise performance. This could indicate that the suggestions doctors and exercise trainers present to females may not be as beneficial for their health because the research is not specifically tailored to …
Bridging Cattle Farming And Technology: The Development Of Moomanager, Matthew Hayes
Bridging Cattle Farming And Technology: The Development Of Moomanager, Matthew Hayes
Honors College Theses
Small-scale cattle producers face persistent challenges in adopting digital tools for herd management, often due to barriers such as limited digital literacy, software complexity, and poor alignment with practical workflows. Existing literature highlights the potential benefits of mobile applications in agricultural contexts, yet adoption rates remain low among smaller operations. This thesis investigates how a streamlined, mobile-first application can address these adoption barriers while supporting essential farm management tasks. The study details the design and development of MooManager, a mobile application built with React Native and Supabase and structured around core features such as cattle tracking, beef sales logging, and …
Experiences Of Social Workers Assisting Victims Of Domestic Violence Who Own Pets, Kimberly Elizabeth Bolesta
Experiences Of Social Workers Assisting Victims Of Domestic Violence Who Own Pets, Kimberly Elizabeth Bolesta
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Victims of domestic violence often face significant barriers when attempting to leave abusive relationships, one of which is the presence of pets. Victims form strong bonds with their pets, and if left behind with abusers, pets may be harmed or killed. When victims flee relationships, they may go to shelters. Domestic violence shelters are often unable to accommodate victims who bring pets. Victims may experience trauma and stress when turned away from shelters. Social workers may be unable to assist victims and their pets due to lack of resources. This study involved using Hobfoll’s theory of conservation of resources as …

BACKGROUND: Mouse models of myocardial ischemia with subsequent heart failure are common approaches to examine heart failure pathology and possible treatment strategies. We sought to establish a high-throughput approach for echocardiography-guided induction of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (IR) in mice.
METHODS: After visualization of the left coronary artery with high-resolution ultrasound imaging and echocardiographic definition of the level of coronary occlusion, the left anterior descending artery was temporarily occluded with 2 micromanipulator-controlled needles. Functional and molecular changes were assessed and compared with commonly performed surgical techniques.
RESULTS: Echocardiography-guided induction of myocardial IR enabled standardized induction of myocardial IR injury with subsequent left …
Establishment Of Six Flags Over The Deconstruction Of Sandtown, John Ely
Establishment Of Six Flags Over The Deconstruction Of Sandtown, John Ely
Master's Theses
Development, both private and public, has played a crucial role in the knowledge that historians can take from the land, but the desire to build quickly ultimately destroyed many sites before they were properly studied. The Chattahoochee River, along with almost all the other rivers and streams in the Southeast, supported not only survival but civilization. Unfortunately, almost the entire catalog of scholarly sources regarding these places was written by men of European descent, and these writers rarely discuss the details regarding the fate of the sites that were destroyed in the name of industry. Sandtown was an almost mythic …

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy has gained increasing attention as an alternative to traditional hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), yet research on self-efficacy related to BHRT adherence remains limited. Guided by Bandura’s social cognitive theory, this quantitative study examined the applicability of the hormone replacement self-efficacy (HRT-SE) scale in a population of BHRT users. Using factor analysis, this study assessed the reliability and validity of the HRT-SE scale in measuring self-efficacy among women using BHRT. The study recruited a convenience sample of 628 participants through online peri/menopause and hormone therapy support groups, collecting self-reported data on confidence in managing BHRT regimens. Findings …
Minority Stressors As Predictor Variables For Animal Abuse In Lgbtq Same-Sex Relationships With Interpersonal Violence, S Paige Brenner
Minority Stressors As Predictor Variables For Animal Abuse In Lgbtq Same-Sex Relationships With Interpersonal Violence, S Paige Brenner
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
LGBTQ individuals face a distinct set of societal issues that can lead to intimate partner violence (IPV) and animal abuse together. Grounded in minority stress theory, the purpose of the study was to reduce animal abuse in LGBTQ male and female same-sex relationships by examining the co-occurrence of internalized homophobia, degree of outness, and IPV. The hypotheses for the study include whether internalized homophobia and degree of outness predict animal abuse in LGBTQ same-sex relationships experiencing IPV. This study was conducted with a population of individuals (N = 149) with inclusion criteria of being 18 years of age or older, …
Behavioral And Neural Microstructures Of Dynamic Cue-Motivated Responses, Erica Townsend
Behavioral And Neural Microstructures Of Dynamic Cue-Motivated Responses, Erica Townsend
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Sign-tracking, a conditioned response in which animals are physically attracted to reward-predictive cues due to motivational value attribution, is known to be persistent but can be flexible under some circumstances. For example, during an omission paradigm, in which vigorous responses must be withheld to avoid reward cancellation, animals can quickly restructure their responses. However, sign-tracking does not cease entirely, and cue attraction persists. This dissertation explores the behavioral and neural mechanisms underlying the simultaneous persistence and flexibility of sign-tracking during omission procedures. First, a novel method for behavioral analysis is introduced to accurately depict sign-tracking animals in dynamic tasks such …

Robots And (Indian) Reservations: A Jurisdictional Nightmare Waiting To Happen, Adam Crepelle
Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property
Advances in artificial intelligence are expanding the possibilities of robots. Indeed, robots are now engaging in numerous activities previously thought to require human cognition, such as driving cars and diagnosing diseases. Scholars have published numerous articles examining the intersection of law and robots across myriad fields. However, legal scholarship has yet to explore the relationship between robots and federal Indian law. This is a significant oversight because there are 574 federally recognized tribes and over fifty-six million acres of Indian country. Thus, legal issues involving tribes and robots are inevitable. This is the first law review article dedicated to exploring …

The aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (AaRSs) are an ancient family of structurally diverse enzymes that are divided into two major classes. The functionalities of most AaRSs are inextricably linked to their oligomeric states. While GluRSs were previously classified as monomers, the current investigation reveals that the form expressed in Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a rotationally pseudosymmetrical homodimer featuring intersubunit tRNA binding sites. Both subunits display a highly bent, “pipe strap” conformation, with the anticodon binding domain directed toward the active site. The tRNA binding sites are similar in shape to those of the monomeric GluRSs, but are formed through an approximately 180-degree rotation …

Lewy Body Disease (LBD) and Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) are synucleinopathies with distinct prognoses and neuropathologies, however, with overlapping clinical symptoms. Different disease characteristics are proposed to be determined by distinct conformations of alpha-synuclein (α-Syn) aggregates, which can self-propagate and spread between cells via a prion-like mechanism. The goal of this study is to investigate whether α-syn aggregates amplified from brain and CSF samples of LBD and MSA patients using the Seed Amplification Assay (SAA) maintain α-Syn seeding properties similar to those of α-syn aggregates derived from patients' brains. To address this, SAA-amplified and un-amplified α-Syn aggregates from LBD and …

Understanding mechanisms of resistance to active therapies is crucial for developing more effective treatments. Here, we investigate resistance to anti-EGFR and anti-VEGF plus chemotherapy treatment in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients from the IMblaze370 trial (NCT02788279). While anti-VEGF does not select for secondary mutations, anti-EGFR leads to simultaneous mutations in EGFR and MAPK, but not PI3K pathway genes. Notably, we observe frequent acquired mutations in the EGFR extracellular but not intracellular domain and that patients with higher baseline expression of EGFR-ligands are prone to acquire resistant mutations. This data reveals a ligand-activated EGFR/MAPK-signaling dependency in CRC. We also observe enrichment for …

Investigating Neural, Neurovascular, And Vascular Function: Insights From Imaging 5-Ht2ar Compounds, Optogenetic Motor Mapping, And Cross-Modal Functional Mapping, Jonah Aryeh Padawer-Curry
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Understanding how brain activity relates to behavior and cognition remains a central challenge in neuroscience. Brain function emerges from interactions between electrical, chemical, and blood dynamics across multiple spatial and temporal scales. Capturing this complexity requires methods that assess both large-scale neurophysiological activity and precise, cell-type-specific processes. Widefield optical imaging (WFOI) enables high-resolution monitoring of cortical function by simultaneously measuring hemodynamic and calcium dynamics. WFOI is particularly valuable for studying psychedelics, which show therapeutic potential but may alter neurovascular coupling, complicating the interpretation of hemodynamic signals. Using WFOI, we examined the hallucinogenic 5-HT2A receptor agonist DOI in awake mice, revealing …

Osteoarthritis As A Multi-Factorial Disease: Exploring Piezo Ion Channels And Adipose Tissue As Therapeutic Targets, Erica Valentine Ely
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a complex disease involving mechanical and inflammatory factors that affect both the joint and systemic environments. Despite its prevalence as a leading cause of pain and disability worldwide, no disease-modifying OA drugs (DMOADs) are currently available. This dissertation focuses on exploring key targets and developing innovative tools to combat OA, addressing its mechanical and inflammatory drivers both independently and in combination. First, we investigated the role of mechanosensitive ion channels Piezo1 and Piezo2 in OA pathogenesis using a murine destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) model. Our findings demonstrated that knocking out Piezo1, Piezo2, or both in …
The Crosstalk Between Muscle And Adipose Tissue In Health And Disease, Chang Gui
The Crosstalk Between Muscle And Adipose Tissue In Health And Disease, Chang Gui
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the crosstalk between adipose and muscle tissues in physiology and pathophysiology, particularly focusing on the therapeutic potential of muscle-associated adipose tissue in muscle regeneration. Adipose tissue, an endocrine organ, secretes cytokines (a.k.a. adipokines) that significantly and negatively impact muscle function in conditions like diabetes, obesity, and aging. Whether similar signals mediate communication between muscle and its adjacent adipose tissue through paracrine signaling is unknown, as is whether this communication is therapeutically modifiable. Understanding the interactions between adipose and muscle tissues could lead to novel therapeutic strategies for improving muscle regeneration and function. …
Jarkesy’S Stakes For The Sec, James Fallows Tierney
Jarkesy’S Stakes For The Sec, James Fallows Tierney
Duke Law Journal
This Article examines the implications of the Supreme Court’s decision in SEC v. Jarkesy for the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC” or “Commission”). In Jarkesy, the Court held that Congress cannot assign the adjudication of securities antifraud violations seeking civil penalties to an administrative agency without a jury trial, for such punitive actions involve “private rights.” Although this ruling might suggest a reduction in SEC enforcement actions due to the higher costs of federal jury trials, the SEC had already adjusted its practices following Lucia v. SEC in 2018. The Commission shifted away from using administrative law judges for civil …

Our Marbury: Loper Bright And The Administrative State, Cass R. Sunstein
Duke Law Journal
Loper Bright, overruling Chevron, is unmistakably part of administrative law’s current “Grand Narrative,” which sees contemporary administrative agencies with suspicion, as a product of successive breaches of Article I, II, and III of the Constitution. The decision should be seen as our Marbury v. Madison—an effort to insist that it is emphatically the province and duty of the judicial department to say what the law is. But will the decision produce large changes? The answer depends, of course, on the meaning of both Chevron and Loper Bright. Under Chevron, courts hardly gave a blank check to agencies; on the contrary, …

“The Best Storyteller In The World:” Gwydion, Court Poetry, And Statecraft In The Fourth Branch Of The Mabinogi, Abigail Fathauer '25
Senior Scholarly and Creative Symposium
Gwydion, the trickster protagonist of The Mabinogi, orchestrates the plot and manipulates those around him. His trickery ultimately results in political shifts, changes, and even wars, reflecting his role as a powerful player in the text. Moreover, Gwydion's use of poetry, knowledge, and words to enact his schemes and manipulations reflects the power of poets in medieval Welsh courts. My thesis argues that Gwydion's use of poetry to manipulate the politics around him reflects the power of poetry to craft nation states, as medieval Welsh poets did.
