The Impact Of Antimicrobial Peptide Depletion And Fungal Infection On Thermal Preference In Green Frogs, Rana Clamitans, Kim M. Salvador May 2025

The Impact Of Antimicrobial Peptide Depletion And Fungal Infection On Thermal Preference In Green Frogs, Rana Clamitans, Kim M. Salvador

Honors Theses

Climate change and the disease chytridiomycosis, caused by the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), are the two main drivers of amphibian decline worldwide, but it is difficult to predict the outcomes of these interacting stressors. Amphibians are ectotherms meaning they are dependent on environmental temperature for the maintenance of physiological processes, and they rely on behavioral thermoregulation to maintain body temperatures within their thermal limits. As the climate becomes more variable, amphibians are also potentially more susceptible to diseases such as Bd, as their immune defenses, such as antimicrobial peptide (AMP) defenses of the skin, take longer to …

Syrian Perspectives On The U.S. Intervention Against Isis: Analysis Of Youtube Videos, Nelson Cleveland May 2025

Syrian Perspectives On The U.S. Intervention Against Isis: Analysis Of Youtube Videos, Nelson Cleveland

Honors Theses

This thesis investigates Syrian public opinion surrounding the 2014 U.S.-led military intervention against ISIS through critical discourse analysis of Arabic-language YouTube videos. In light of the renewed interest and continued presence of U.S. troops in Syria following the Assad regime’s collapse in 2024, the study examines how Syrians originally responded to the coalition strikes and political context in which they occurred. Drawing on four primary videos including street interviews, protest recordings, and discussions from expert panelists, the analysis uncovers recurring themes of distrust towards the U.S. and other states who engaged in intervention, condemnation of perceived collusion and exploitation, and …

Impacts Of Polyploidization On Endocrine Regulation And Vocalization In The Gray Treefrog Complex, Avery Thigpen May 2025

Impacts Of Polyploidization On Endocrine Regulation And Vocalization In The Gray Treefrog Complex, Avery Thigpen

Honors Theses

Comparative genomics data suggest that vertebrates are descendants of ancestral polyploids and that historical polyploidization events fueled evolutionary innovations. For example, polyploidization can modify gene expression patterns and/or increase gene mutation rates to alter the phenotype. While considerable emphasis has been placed on the evolutionary impact of ancient polyploidization events, less is known regarding phenotypic modifications in extant polyploids. I examined circulating levels of adrenal glucocorticoids and gonadal steroids in the diploid-tetraploid gray treefrog complex to understand how polyploidization has impacted hormonal regulation. Furthermore, I examined the relationships between levels of these hormones and acoustic signals to examine if and …

Anti-Cancer Activity Of Marine-Derived Fucosylated Chondroitin Sulfates In Ovarian Cancer Cell Spheroid Formation And Notch Signaling Inhibition, Daniella Beiner May 2025

Anti-Cancer Activity Of Marine-Derived Fucosylated Chondroitin Sulfates In Ovarian Cancer Cell Spheroid Formation And Notch Signaling Inhibition, Daniella Beiner

Honors Theses

Ovarian cancer is the deadliest gynecological malignancy, with high recurrence rates driven by chemotherapy-resistant cancer stem cells (CSCs). Current therapeutics targeting Notch signaling to inhibit CSC formation have yet to demonstrate clinical benefit and pose risk of gastrointestinal toxicities. Here, we report that treatment with fucosylated chondroitin sulfates (FucCS) inhibited Notch signaling activation and spheroid formation in OVCAR3 ovarian cancer cells. Sulfation and fucosylation were shown to be key structural requirements of this anti-cancer activity. Moreover, this inhibition was synergistic with suppression of Notch glycosylation by Radical Fringe knockout. Preliminary experiments to conjugate FucCS to a maleimide linker in preparation …

Opmed Seal: Engineering A Rapid-Response Biodegradable Device For Hemorrhage Control And Infection Prevention In Abdominal Trauma, Paula M. Cabrera, Wesley Stephen Murphy May 2025

Opmed Seal: Engineering A Rapid-Response Biodegradable Device For Hemorrhage Control And Infection Prevention In Abdominal Trauma, Paula M. Cabrera, Wesley Stephen Murphy

Honors Theses

Abdominal gunshot wounds are amongst the deadliest injuries encountered in combat and remote emergency settings. For military medics and first responders, the challenge lies in controlling internal bleeding and preventing infection before patients can reach surgical care-often within a narrow window of time known as the “golden hour”. Currently available field treatments are either too slow, not designed for internal wounds, or fail to provide antimicrobial protection. To address this gap, our team developed OpMed Seal: a compact, dual-syringe delivery system that deploys a biodegradable, antibiotic-infused hydrogel directly into abdominal injuries. The system is designed for rapid hemorrhage control, localized …

The Endocannabinoid System's Influence And Modulation Of Nociception, Doreen M. Flannery May 2025

The Endocannabinoid System's Influence And Modulation Of Nociception, Doreen M. Flannery

Honors Thesis

The anatomy and physiology of pain is a well-defined pathway where noxious stimuli is processed by different systems in the brain. The central research question of this review is how can we better understand the neurobiological effects pain has, and assess if there is therapeutic potential in using endocannabinoids to modulate these effects. Endocannabinoids are signaling molecules that play a key role at both the cellular and molecular level in modulating both acute and chronic pain by influencing different processes within each level that affect how the body responds to both internal and external stimuli. The endocannabinoid system is a …

Creasing In Thick Hemispherical Shells As A Model For Foveal Formation, Indigo Skye Peppard May 2025

Creasing In Thick Hemispherical Shells As A Model For Foveal Formation, Indigo Skye Peppard

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This research experimentally investigates creasing behavior on the inner surface of hemispherical shells with the ultimate goal of modelling the formation of the foveal pit, a sharp surface deformation present in the retina of the eye of many animals. Creasing is a phenomenon observed in hyperelastic materials and is characterized by sharply localized surface deformations that appear at ~35% compressive strain. The foveal pits of anoles (small iguanian lizards) are funnel-shaped and resemble creases when cut along the central axis. Furthermore, during foveal pit formation the anole eye contracts around 35% along this same axis. Given these similarities we believe …

Felony Offenders' Perceptions Of Effective Rehabilitation And Reintegration Programs In Northern Colorado, Burnes Marjorie May 2025

Felony Offenders' Perceptions Of Effective Rehabilitation And Reintegration Programs In Northern Colorado, Burnes Marjorie

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Criminal justice reform programs in the U.S. have grown and developed as studies have found that older methods of criminal punishment are ineffective in terms of reducing the likelihood of an inmate being reincarcerated after release, referred to as “recidivism.” With the growth of these reforms, ground-breaking systems have been integrated into prisons in the form of rehabilitation and reintegration programs which serve to reduce recidivism. However, with the development of numerous new unique and powerful programs, determining which rehabilitation and reintegration programs are most effective in reducing recidivism in felony offenders in the U.S. is critical. Past research …

Neurodegenerative Disease Mechanisms: Mitochondrial Impairment, Tau Aggregation, And Neuroinflammation As Central Drivers Of Disease Progression, Luis D. Estrella May 2025

Neurodegenerative Disease Mechanisms: Mitochondrial Impairment, Tau Aggregation, And Neuroinflammation As Central Drivers Of Disease Progression, Luis D. Estrella

Theses & Dissertations

The study of the intricate molecular mechanisms behind the pathology of neurodegenerative diseases has become a primary research area in the past decades. The major branches of these studies involve both disease progression and disease pathogenesis, in which neuroscientists have studied, and continue to study, the role that mitochondrial dysfunction, aberrant protein aggregation (like Tau), and immune cell reactions have on these. However, more recent studies have shined light to the fact that these three pathological features are not independent from one another and that their synchronous contributions may be the ultimate driver of neurodegeneration. This dissertation encompasses four different …

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a neurodevelopmental condition affecting communication, social interaction, and sensory processing, has seen a marked increase in prevalence over the past two decades. Dermatologists are increasingly encountering patients with ASD, many of whom face compounded challenges due to mobility issues, such as reliance on wheelchairs, as well as sensory hypersensitivities and communication barriers. Despite the growing demand for specialized care, advocacy for accessible dermatologic health for individuals with ASD remains insufficient. This literature review highlights the challenges faced by this population, including higher susceptibility to certain dermatologic conditions and the significant barriers to effective clinical evaluation and …

Molecular Basis Of Trpv3 Channel Blockade By Intracellular Polyamines, Jingying Zhang, Peng Yuan, Colin G Nichols, Grigory Maksaev

2020-Current year OA Pubs

ThermoTRPV1-4 channels are involved in the regulation of multiple physiological processes, including thermo- and pain perception, thermoregulation, itch, and nociception and therefore tight control of their activity is a critical requirement for correct perception of noxious stimuli and pain. We previously reported a voltage-dependent inhibition of TRPV1-4 channels by intracellular polyamines that could be explained by high affinity spermine binding in, and passage through, the permeation path. Here, using electrophysiology and cryo-electron microscopy, we elucidate molecular details of TRPV3 blockade by endogenous spermine and its analog NASPM. We identify a high-affinity polyamine interaction site at the intracellular side of the …

Processing Words Using An Ostracism Avoidance Scenario Improves Recall Performance, Julia R. East

Honors Theses

Background. Psychologists have long been interested in studying memory retention, the ability to retain or recall information. Many experiments show that survival processing, which involves encoding information in the context of survival scenarios, has consistently been demonstrated to be one of the best deep processing tasks identified to date. Memory performance following survival processing has been compared with other conditions universally accepted to produce excellent retention, such as processing information using imagery, pleasantness instructions, and self-reference processing. The present study compares the survival processing condition with an ostracism processing condition. It was hypothesized that ostracism processing might perform similarly …

Fine-Scale Spatial Patterns In Microbial Activity And Community Composition In Shoreline Marine Sediments, Elizabeth Basha May 2025

Fine-Scale Spatial Patterns In Microbial Activity And Community Composition In Shoreline Marine Sediments, Elizabeth Basha

Honors Theses

Coastal environments of the Gulf of Mexico host diverse and dynamic microbial communities essential for biogeochemical cycling, yet the fine-scale environmental drivers of microbial function and community structure in these systems remain underexplored. This study investigated the relationships between sand moisture content, microbial extracellular enzyme activity, and bacterial community composition along beach transects on Biloxi East Beach, Mississippi. Sand was sampled at five points along four transects spanning a gradient from submerged intertidal zones to dry upper beach sands. Extracellular enzyme activities linked to carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling (β-glucosidase, N-acetylglucosaminidase, phosphatase, phenol oxidase, and peroxidase) were measured, and bacterial …

Extracting Renewables: A Capabilities Approach To A Just Transition Crisis, Mateos Lozano May 2025

Extracting Renewables: A Capabilities Approach To A Just Transition Crisis, Mateos Lozano

Honors Theses

Extraction of cobalt and lithium is often regarded as necessary to facilitate a successful transition to renewable energy so that global warming can be limited to 2°C. At the same time, many current cobalt and lithium extraction practices contribute to environmental destruction, expose workers to toxic contaminants, and sometimes involve child labor. This thesis argues that cobalt and lithium extraction, if permissible, must be conducted in a manner compatible with the normative obligations of justice and fairness. I first explain notable differences between prominent types of cobalt and lithium extraction and note how each impacts people and the environment. Then, …

An Articulation And Defense Of American Nationality, Clara E. White May 2025

An Articulation And Defense Of American Nationality, Clara E. White

Honors Theses

This thesis seeks to first provide an articulation of American nationality based on the five components outlined in David Miller’s book On Nationality. These components are Geographical Connection, Constitutive Belief, Public Culture, Active Identity, and Historical Continuity. In the case of American national identity, these components are satisfied by the founding documents meant to govern the United States as well as the sum of how citizens have interacted with these texts throughout history. Secondly, this thesis composes a defense from two widely known theories of political thought that I believe violate the articulated American nationality. These views are labeled as …

Assisted Reproductive Technologies For Southern Cricket Frogs (Acris Gryllus), Audrey Grace Koltz May 2025

Assisted Reproductive Technologies For Southern Cricket Frogs (Acris Gryllus), Audrey Grace Koltz

Honors Theses

Amphibians are facing the most drastic biodiversity declines of all vertebrates, with an estimated 41% of amphibians threatened with extinction. Captive breeding programs employ a variety of assisted reproductive technologies including environmental manipulation, hormonal therapies, artificial fertilization, and gamete preservation to augment vulnerable populations and optimize genetic diversity. Amphibians require a species-specific combination of environmental, social, and physiological cues to reproduce, which makes universal and successful captive breeding programs especially elusive. Here, I investigate assisted reproductive technologies for a small frog species, the southern cricket frog (Acris gryllus). Establishing successful methods for southern cricket frogs may yield promising results for …

The Effects Of Environmental, Biological, And Social Factors On Telomere Length In Chestnut-Crowned Babblers, Carson L. Langston

Honors Thesis

Telomeres, repetitive nucleotide sequences at the ends of chromosomes, are vital in maintaining genomic integrity. Because degradation of these structures has been linked to oxidative stress, inflammation, and metabolic demands, they are also recognized as biomarkers for biological aging, lifespan, and physiological stress. This study investigates the ecological and physiological factors influencing telomere length changes in adult chestnut-crowned babblers (Pomatostomus ruficeps), a cooperatively breeding bird native to the arid and semi-arid zones of southeastern Australia. This species offers a valuable system for exploring how ecological pressures shape life history strategies due to the harsh environmental factors and social …

Designing An Economically Viable Off-Grid Photovoltaic System Considering The Battery Discharge Rate, Ahmed S. Abdelrazek, Eslam Mohamed Ahmed, Mahmoud Elsisi, Mokhtar Said

Mansoura Engineering Journal

The primary significance of harnessing power from clean and renewable sources lies in the fact that numerous rural areas are far from the utility system. Among the renewable energy technologies catering to power needs in residential areas is the solar photovoltaic (PV) system. Despite the potential of PV technology and the abundant sun radiation exposure in Hurghada, Egypt, there is a lack of empirical studies evaluating the feasibility of off-grid power production using this system. A notable aspect of this study is the consideration of the discharge rate of the battery for sizing the off-grid system, involving the distribution of …

From Vector To Consequence: Integrating Vector Surveillance, Environmental Drivers, And Public Health Impact Into Lyme Disease Risk Management, Kathleen E. Angell

Theses & Dissertations

Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in North America. This dissertation examines (1) how crowd-sourced compares to active vector surveillance and whether they are associated with Lyme disease, (2) how ecological factors relate to tick abundance and whether they can predict high disease years, and (3) estimated health and economic burden of Lyme disease and savings when interventions are applied. Tick abundance data from active and passive surveillance were compared and tested for association with Lyme disease in the first aim. We found differences in tick life-stage, species, and seasonality. Tick observations were positively correlated with Lyme disease. …

Computational Models Of Vocal Fold Lesions: Analysis Of Fluid-Structure Interaction, Manoela Rocha Neves May 2025

Computational Models Of Vocal Fold Lesions: Analysis Of Fluid-Structure Interaction, Manoela Rocha Neves

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The biomechanical and aerodynamic behaviors of the vocal folds (VFs) during phonation are heavily influenced by their structural composition and pathological changes. These conditions can induce localized stiffening that disrupts vibratory symmetry and alters airflow resistance. Previous research has lacked the integration of VF lesions in computational simulations using anatomically accurate models, limiting the understanding of their effects in phonation and potential contribution to voice disorders. Addressing this gap, this thesis develops a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) model of a realistic two-layered VF structure with lesions, comparing airflow patterns, structural deformations, and vibration profiles in both healthy and diseased cases.

The Diverse Roles Of Complex Glycans In Synapse Development And Function, Peng Zhang May 2025

The Diverse Roles Of Complex Glycans In Synapse Development And Function, Peng Zhang

Faculty Scholarship

Protein glycosylation is a critical post-translational modification that mediates a myriad of biological functions, including neuronal development in the brain. Stages of neuronal development include neurogenesis, neuronal migration, axonal guidance, synapse formation, and activity-dependent synaptic remodeling and plasticity. Among these, synapse formation and plasticity are essential to establish and maintain neuronal circuits for proper brain function. Yet, the physiological role of glycans at synapses remains poorly understood. This is especially true for complex glycans, known for decades to be present on the cell surface or extracellular matrix, including the microenvironment around synapses. In this review, we highlight recent examples of …

MicroRNA-mediated post-transcriptional regulation of lung alveolar type 2 (AT2) and AT1 cell differentiation remains understudied. Here, we demonstrate that the let-7 miRNA family plays a homeostatic role in AT2 quiescence by preventing the uncontrolled accumulation of AT2 transitional cells and promoting AT1 differentiation. Using mouse and organoid models, we show that genetic ablation of let-7a1/let-7f1/let-7d cluster (let-7afd) in AT2 cells prevents AT1 differentiation and leads to KRT8 transitional cell accumulation in progressive pulmonary fibrosis. Integration of AGO2-eCLIP with RNA-sequencing identified direct let-7 targets within an oncogene feed-forward regulatory network, including BACH1/EZH2/MYC, which drives an aberrant fibrotic cascade. Additional CUT&RUN-sequencing analyses …
