Assessing The Long-Term Impact Of Goat Grazing On The Abundance Of Rhamnus Cathartica, Isaac W. Stark
Assessing The Long-Term Impact Of Goat Grazing On The Abundance Of Rhamnus Cathartica, Isaac W. Stark
Science Symposium
In years past, high levels of biodiversity and herds of roaming grazing animals maintained a delicate balance between species of plants. More recently due to globalization and deforestation foreign species like Rhamnus cathartica have been able to grow unchecked. Our study uses long term data from periodically goat-grazed areas near Bethel University, MN to evaluate the effectiveness of goat grazing to manage invasive plant species. Random one square meter quadrats were established in 2018 (n=70) to compare the differences in R. cathartica stem density between three height categories (0-30 cm, 30-150 cm, >150 cm), as well as other plant species …

Australia An Dits Outback, Lewis Deitch
The Geographical Bulletin
So states Australian poet A. D. Hope as he vividly describes the land "Down Under.'" It is a continent of widespread aridity whose burnt red and brown colors predominate over much of the landscape. The Continent contains 2,941,526 square miles (with Tasmania, the island state, the Commonwealth comprises an area of 2,967,909 square miles): By comparison, Australia is slightly smaller than the 48 contiguous United States, and roughly the same latitudinal and longitudinal dimensions. In contrast however, the Australian continent is largely uninhabited or at best sparsely settled. The population (at the 1966 Census) of 11,550,4623 is primarily centered in …

After cannabidiol was extracted from the hemp biomass using supercritical CO2 extraction, the residual could be utilized as a source of other valuable ingredients. The stability of the extracted CBD in pre- and post- encapsulation states were evaluated. Dynamic macerations with ethanol and hexane were compared for CBD extraction. The ethanol extract yielded 0.11% ± 0.10 CBD and 1.83% ± 0.00 cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), while the hexane extraction yielded 0.08% ± 0.04 CBD, 1.06% ± 0.04 CBDA, and 0.30% ± 0.04 delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC). Ethanol extraction was selected due to the low THC detection in the extract. The CBD extract was …
Covid-19 And Related Adverse Neurological Complications, Hannah A. Wasson
Covid-19 And Related Adverse Neurological Complications, Hannah A. Wasson
Honors Thesis
Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic changed the world drastically, and its impact was monumental. COVID-19 or SARS-CoV-2, or severe acute respiratory syndrome, was the virus responsible for causing such mayhem. This contagious virus can enter the body via different routes, live on surfaces for hours, and be transmitted through the air, increasing infection risk. Once it enters the body, it can trick the body into replicating the virus. From this reaction within the body, signs and symptoms follow. While the name indicates a respiratory illness, the virus can inflict injury on other parts of the body. Due to the organ systems …

Chronic pain affects millions of individuals worldwide, presenting as a multifactorial condition that impacts physical, emotional, and socioeconomic well-being. Despite the availability of both pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies, significant side effects, limited efficacy, and addiction risks drive the need for new, innovative treatments. The pterygopalatine ganglion block (PPGB) is emerging as a promising interventional approach that targets autonomic and neurogenic pathways that may be implicated in chronic pain mechanisms. This thesis reviews the neuroanatomy of the pterygopalatine ganglion, its potential role in autonomic regulation and pain mediation, and its clinical applications in treating headache syndromes such as cluster headaches and …
Integration Of Hydrological Simulations Into The Design Process To Assess The Performance Of Green Infrastructure Designs, Clara Jimenez
Integration Of Hydrological Simulations Into The Design Process To Assess The Performance Of Green Infrastructure Designs, Clara Jimenez
Design Research
With the growing threat of flooding in coastal and inland communities, it is necessary to migrate nature-based solutions such as green infrastructure. However, one of the challenges that designers face with this strategy lies in the design phase where it is difficult to quantify the performance with traditional design tools. Thus, there is an incentive to incorporate hydrological models within GIS to aid designers in quantifying performance. The goal of this research is to demonstrate that hydrological simulations can be used as a design tool for designers–such as landscape architects & architects– to analyze the feasibility of green infrastructure designs …

Wandering From The River: On- And Off-River Abundance Of Interior Least Terns Along The 59-Mile Reach Of The Missouri National Recreational River, Zoe D. Donelan
Honors Thesis
The Interior Least Tern, a summer nesting species native to the sandbars of the Missouri River, faces significant loss of foraging habitat and forage fish populations as a result of modern river regulation. Alternative foraging sites may be located several kilometers from tern nesting colonies at either on-river or off-river wetland sites. To understand how Least Terns use available foraging habitat, we conducted population surveys along the 59-mile reach of the Missouri National Recreational River (MNRR) in Southeastern South Dakota. We conducted land-based surveys at nine on-river public-access sites along the Missouri River and 12 off-river wetland sites within 30 …
Relationship Between Maternal Plasma Retinol And Provitamin A Carotenoids With Fetal And Infant Kidney Development, Anum Akbar
Theses & Dissertations
Vitamin A plays a critical role in fetal organ development. Studies suggest that maternal vitamin A deficiency affects fetal nephron numbers, potentially leading to smaller kidney sizes and an increased risk of chronic kidney disease later in life. However, human studies exploring maternal vitamin A's impact on fetal kidney development lack longitudinal data and within-cohort comparisons. Furthermore, the influence of provitamin A carotenoids (α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin) on kidney size remains unexplored. This dissertation addresses these gaps by analyzing relationships between maternal and cord plasma retinol and provitamin A carotenoid concentrations with fetal and infant kidney sizes. Our prospective cohort …
The Art Of Dreaming: A Surrealist Approach To Dream Analysis, Shelby Wright
The Art Of Dreaming: A Surrealist Approach To Dream Analysis, Shelby Wright
Honors Thesis
Over the past two years, I created a series of paintings to explore the meaning of my nightmares. This study analyzes the themes and symbols in these dreams through the psychological frameworks of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. Freud’s causal approach focuses on repressed desires, while Jung’s method relies on mythological symbols and archetypes in the collective unconscious. Drawing on the ideas of André Breton and the Surrealist movement, I examine how art can bridge dreams and waking life. By painting my dreams, I aim to better understand my unconscious and invite viewers to question their perception of reality. This …

Temporal Assessment Of Fish Communities In A South Central Plains Ecoregion Watershed, Tara L. Schnelting
ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present
Among South Central Plains ecoregion fish communities, there is limited knowledge of the importance of headwaters yet this information is needed to understand their role in fish communities. I addressed this gap by assessing seasonal changes in fish communities in headwater streams of the Moro Creek watershed, Arkansas. I conducted two studies pertaining to temporal fish community assessments: (i) utilize multi-season, community occupancy models to estimate μ (species probability), Ω (community occupancy mean), and p (detection probability) and (ii) utilize beta diversity (β) analyses to address the diversity across different scales in the headwaters of the Moro Creek …

Cholestasis And Fluid Flow Are Biomechanic Regulators Of Cholangiocarcinoma Progression, Andrew Oleksijew
Cholestasis And Fluid Flow Are Biomechanic Regulators Of Cholangiocarcinoma Progression, Andrew Oleksijew
Theses & Dissertations
Cholestasis, altered or absent bile flow, is associated with poor survival in patients with cholangiocarcinoma, an aggressive cancer of the biliary epithelium. Changes in bile flow often result in stricture or obstruction. Experimental cholestasis promoted tumor growth and progression. However, studies are needed that directly assess the mechanical interaction between bile flow, or bile shear stress, and cholangiocarcinoma signaling. We hypothesized that cholestasis and absent bile shear stress activated cancer signaling and increased aggressive cellular behaviors such as proliferation and migration. Fluid shear stress approximating bile flow was applied by orbital culture plate method and compared to identical static culture …
Multi-Modal Mri For The Pre-Clinical Evaluation Of Hiv-Linked Changes In The Central Nervous System, Gabriel Gauthier
Multi-Modal Mri For The Pre-Clinical Evaluation Of Hiv-Linked Changes In The Central Nervous System, Gabriel Gauthier
Theses & Dissertations
Though the inception of anti-retroviral therapy (ART) has fundamentally changed the life expectancy of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patients, accessibility and outcomes vary enormously along demographic lines. Even for people living with HIV (PLWH) with perfect access and adherence to anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs), modern treatment plans are fundamentally unable to secure complete viral remission for patients. The cause of this perpetual infection is the persistence of viral reservoirs in the central nervous system (CNS), hidden beyond the reach of modern ARVs, leaving patients to deal with lifelong medication side-effects and risks of developing HIV-associated neurodegenerative disorders (HAND). Despite improving outcomes …
Apolipoprotein E4, Tauopathy, And Brain Injury: Molecular Insights Into Alzheimer's Disease Pathology, Nashanthea J. Roland
Apolipoprotein E4, Tauopathy, And Brain Injury: Molecular Insights Into Alzheimer's Disease Pathology, Nashanthea J. Roland
Theses & Dissertations
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the world’s leading cause of dementia, characterized by progressive atrophy of the hippocampal and cortical brain regions, synapse damage and loss, and a buildup of senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles composed of β-amyloid peptides and hyperphosphorylated tau, respectively. While age is the most significant risk factor for developing AD, apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4) is the strongest genetic risk factor for AD. Although it is known that APOE4 influences tau pathology, the molecular mechanisms by which APOE4 drives AD pathogenesis and progression remain unclear. In addition to intrinsic contributions to AD, there are many extrinsic factors that can …
A Comparison Of Resurgence Following Dra And Dro, Alysa Georgopoulos
A Comparison Of Resurgence Following Dra And Dro, Alysa Georgopoulos
Theses & Dissertations
Resurgence, a form of behavioral relapse, occurs when a previously reduced target behavior reemerges after an alternative source of reinforcement is discontinued. Differential reinforcement of alternative behavior (DRA) and differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO) are commonly used strategies to reduce undesired behaviors. Although both are effective, unanticipated periods of extinction (e.g., service lapses or staff turnover) may lead to resurgence of the original target behavior. Romano and St. Peter (2017) found that behavior reduced via DRO was more prone to resurgence than behavior reduced via DRA. However, their study used a different number of response options between conditions (one …
Drivers And Mechanisms Of Golgi Fragmentation As A Modulator Of Disease, Amanda Macke
Drivers And Mechanisms Of Golgi Fragmentation As A Modulator Of Disease, Amanda Macke
Theses & Dissertations
The Golgi apparatus plays a pivotal role in post-translational modification, trafficking, and secretion of proteins, ensuring proper cellular function. As a result, its fragmentation has been implicated in multiple pathological conditions, including alcohol-induced liver injury and prostate cancer (PCa). Despite its known impact on cellular homeostasis, the molecular mechanisms governing Golgi fragmentation remain to be clarified. Additionally, we have only just begun to understand the vast consequences of Golgi disorganization on disease progression.
This dissertation investigates the drivers and mechanisms of Golgi fragmentation, with a focus on its role as a modulator of disease. Using both in vitro and in …

Evaluating The Therapeutic Potential Of Geranylgeranyl Diphosphate Synthase Inhibitor, Ram2061, In Myeloma Bone Disease, Molly Muehlebach
Theses & Dissertations
Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematological malignancy of the plasma cells which often results in lytic bone disease. Myeloma bone disease (MBD), characterized by diffuse osteopenia, bone lesions, or pathological fracture, results from MM mediated promotion of osteoclast resorption and dual inhibition of bone formation, drastically reducing bone strength and integrity. Development of MBD is known to significantly impact patient quality of life and increase risk of mortality. Considering that up to 80-95% of MM patients are expected to develop bone disease post-initial MM diagnosis, there is a significant need within this population for therapeutics which address both MM disease …
Intrinsic And Extrinsic Drivers Of Bioaerosol Decay: Investigating Pathogen Stability Of Bacteriophage Ms2, Sin Nombre Virus, And Sars-Cov-2 In Simulated Environments, Elizabeth A. Klug
Intrinsic And Extrinsic Drivers Of Bioaerosol Decay: Investigating Pathogen Stability Of Bacteriophage Ms2, Sin Nombre Virus, And Sars-Cov-2 In Simulated Environments, Elizabeth A. Klug
Theses & Dissertations
The threat posed by a virus as a bioaerosol depends largely on its stability under various environmental conditions (relative humidity (RH), sunlight, ozone, etc.). This stability is typically studied through aerosol decay—how the virus' viability changes over time when exposed environmental conditions. The Goldberg rotating drum, a widely used tool for studying bioaerosols, has been the basis of such research (Goldberg et al., 1958). However, it has significant limitations, including an inability to measure initial pathogen infectivity loss and the use of small sample volumes. Additionally, it does not answer the question of what intrinsic factors (lipids, proteins, nucleic acids) …

2020-Current year OA Pubs
Radiolabeled targeting agents have emerged as valuable tools for the treatment of disseminated cancer. Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are widely employed as carriers for diagnostic and therapeutic radionuclides due to their exceptional specificity and affinity. However, their prolonged circulatory half-life can diminish diagnostic efficacy and increase radiation exposure to non-target tissues in therapeutic applications, resulting in dose-limiting toxicities. To overcome this limitation, pretargeting technologies emerge as promising strategies to enhance tumor-to-background ratio and reduce radiation exposure of healthy tissues. Our previous work introduced a pretargeting concept leveraging the specific interaction between two peptide nucleic acid (PNA) probes, HP1 and HP2, as …
