“You See, I Am Over Here Throwing Up, No I Am Not Doing Good”: Exploring Ways Maternal Mortality Rates Are Influenced And Amplified By Racial And Class Status Inequities Among Women Of African-Descent, Shukura Ayoluwa Umi, Phd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Previous data suggest that maternal mortality is an issue drastically affecting African-Descent women since the maternal mortality rate was 69.9 deaths per 100,000 live births, 2.6 times the rate for European-Descent women. Considering the data, my study aimed to showcase, beyond the statistics, the communication exchanges and lived experiences surrounding maternal mortality discourse among African-Descent women in Shelby County, Tennessee. This study was one of the first of its kind to capture data, in Shelby County, TN, which led me to develop these research questions: RQ1) What are the personal communication experiences of African-Descent women regarding prenatal, labor, and antenatal …

The Impact Of Nature Reserves On The Ecological Network Of Urban Agglomerations—A Case Study Of The Urban Agglomeration In The Middle Reaches Of The Yangtze River, Weidi Li, Xiaoxu Liang, Anqiang Jia, John Martin

Professional Services

The accelerated development of urban agglomerations in China has resulted in the significant regional expansion of infrastructure and urban spaces, which has led to the fragmentation of habitats and the degradation of ecosystem function. Ecological networks have been shown to reconnect isolated habitat patches within urban agglomerations by identifying ecological sources and constructing corridors, which could enhance regional ecological security. Nature reserves, as critical areas for the protection of key species and ecosystems, play a vital role in this process. Investigating the influence of nature reserves on the ecological networks of urban agglomerations helps to integrate regional ecological resources, optimize …

Invasion As A Structure: Carceral Capitalism, Necropolitics, And The Persistence Of Settler-Colonialism, Ethan Peacock May 2025

Invasion As A Structure: Carceral Capitalism, Necropolitics, And The Persistence Of Settler-Colonialism, Ethan Peacock

Honors College Theses

In the United States, settler-colonialism is often dismissed as a "bad chapter" of the past, an embarrassing episode of the nation's history, considered irrelevant to contemporary socio-political discussions. In contrast, while ongoing, Canada's reconciliation efforts remain performative, failing to address underlying colonial power structures. This project argues that settler-colonialism is not merely a historical phenomenon but a pervasive socio-political and cultural structure shaping the contemporary world. Capitalism depends on racialized and gendered hierarchies, continually produced through dispossession, marginalization, and exploitation. The prison-industrial complex (PIC) exemplifies this dynamic by industrializing dehumanization and weaponizing state violence against marginalized communities through mass incarceration, …

Ethics In The Age Of Digital Trading: Rethinking Responsibility In Modern Investing, Kennedy Solomon, Melissa Fitzpatrick May 2025

Ethics In The Age Of Digital Trading: Rethinking Responsibility In Modern Investing, Kennedy Solomon, Melissa Fitzpatrick

Honors Thesis

The rise of digital trading platforms such as Robinhood has transformed retail investing into an accessible activity for the general public. While these platforms claim to democratize investing through commission-free trading and intuitive interfaces, their gamified designs and aggressive marketing raise significant ethical concerns. This paper explores how such apps target inexperienced users, encouraging potentially reckless financial behavior under the guise of empowerment.

Intraspecific Sensory Diversity And The Decapod Claw: Patterns Of Sensillation Are Heterochelic And Sexually Dimorphic In Pagurus Bernhardus, Ari Drummond, Summer Nash, Tianna Holloway, Alexander Wilson, Lucy Turner, Mark Briffa, David T Bilton

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Information detection affects physiological performance and behaviour and is vital to survival and fitness. Despite the recognised importance of sensory adaptations in information acquisition and manipulation, many forms of sensory variation—from within individuals to between species—remain underexplored. To better understand the role of information in evolution, it is important to examine sensory variation as part of a cohesive framework of sensory diversity. Using the decapod claw, a structure well-recognised for its morphological variation, we investigated sensory diversity at the intraspecific level by assessing heterochely and sexual dimorphism in the chelar morphologies of Pagurus bernhardus hermit crabs. We employed a novel …

Investigating Undergraduate Conditioned Place Preference Utilizing Virtual Alcohol Stimuli, Nikole A. Rodriguez Torres, Robert Astur, Jeffrey Divino

Honors Scholar Theses

Alcohol use remains a major concern among college students, with binge drinking linked to serious physical and mental health problems. But how much does the environment influence these addictive behaviors? The relationship between environmental cues and alcohol related behaviors is a critical area of study, particularly understanding reward and motivation mechanisms. Binge drinking, common among college students, is associated with a range of negative outcomes such as physical harm, legal issues, poorer overall health, sleep problems, depression, anxiety, and severe thoughts of suicide. In our study, college undergraduates were exposed to two VR rooms: one with alcohol-related stimuli and one …

This study explores how editing influences public discourse and perception by analyzing two major editing controversies, one involving the written word and the other, image. The method of analysis I employ is close textual-intertextual analysis in which I rely on the original source, that is, the written word and image in question, and supplement the analysis with secondary sources, such as media articles, scholarly works, and public reactions. The first case study focuses on the issue of bowdlerization as regards Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl and the second artifact focuses on digital editing as it relates to …

Africanism In America: Exploring Hybrid Identities Of African Students In The Us, Ruth A. Yeboah May 2025

Africanism In America: Exploring Hybrid Identities Of African Students In The Us, Ruth A. Yeboah

Masters Theses

This study interrogates the intercultural experiences of African international students (AIS) in a US Midwestern University. With a focus on West African students, the project explores how students confront and overcome linguistic, cultural, and systemic barriers as they create new dynamic spaces which are neither American nor African, but a mixture of both in a predominantly White institution. Drawing on the theoretical constructs of hybridity and language ideology, the findings reveal how AIS actively negotiate identity by using traditional African cultural traits, rooted in Africanism—with new cultural influences, generating unique, fluid and constantly-evolving hybrid identities. I utilized ethnographic observations …

The Effects Of Panobinostat On Cellular Signaling Pathways And How It Relates To Antitumor Activities In Ewing Sarcoma Cancer Cells, Crystal Valenzuela, Andrew Martini, Hannah Navarro, Mario Flores, Terry Jo Shackleford May 2025

The Effects Of Panobinostat On Cellular Signaling Pathways And How It Relates To Antitumor Activities In Ewing Sarcoma Cancer Cells, Crystal Valenzuela, Andrew Martini, Hannah Navarro, Mario Flores, Terry Jo Shackleford

Cell and Molecular Methods

Ewing sarcoma is a rare and aggressive cancer that primarily affects the bones and surrounding soft tissues, most commonly in children and young adults. Although the exact etiology remains unclear, a well-documented cause involves a chromosomal translocation resulting in the fusion of the EWSR1 and FLI1 genes. This fusion produces abnormal proteins that disrupt normal gene expression, cell signaling, and RNA processing, contributing to tumorigenesis. Prognosis varies significantly depending on the extent of metastasis, with 5-year survival rates ranging from 82% in localized cases to 39% in metastatic cases. Standard treatments include chemotherapy typically involving vincristine, doxorubicin, etoposide, and cyclophosphamide—surgical …

8-oxoguanine (8-oxoGua) is one of the most frequent forms of oxidative DNA base lesions, repaired by 8-oxoguanine DNA glycosylase 1 (OGG1) via base excision repair (BER) pathway to maintain genome fidelity. The human allelic variant hOGG1S326C, prevalent in Caucasians and Asians, has been regarded as a susceptibility factor for various diseases, yet its pathogenic mechanism remains elusive. In this study, we demonstrate that Ogg1S326C/S326C mice exhibit increased and sustained airway inflammation compared with wild-type (WT) Ogg1S326/S326 mice. Mechanistically, in response to inflammatory stimulation, OGG1S326C undergoes reactive oxygen species-induced dimerization, which impairs its base excision function, but …

Biochar is a charcoal-like substance made by the pyrolysis of organic material from agricultural and forestry waste. While biochar is well documented for altering soil physicochemical conditions, few studies have investigated its possible effects on the management of arthropod pests. Tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta) and fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda, FAW) are specialist and generalist insect herbivores respectively, that can cause significant defoliation in natural and agricultural ecosystems. In this study, we examined whether walnut shell biochar can affect growth and development of these herbivores. Specifically, we investigated how biochar influences parameters such as mass gain, length of pupation, pupal mass, …

Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is widely recognized for its efficacy in treating diabetic wounds, but the mechanisms involved in the wound healing process remain unclear. By examining changes in blood cytokine levels as molecular signaling precursors, we aim to provide a comprehensive cytokine profile to support adjunctive therapy research and clinical applications. A diabetic mouse wound model was established to compare cytokine profiles between NPWT-treated and standard dressing groups, identifying key signaling candidates that may facilitate wound healing. By integrating normal mouse data with large-scale cytokine analysis, we developed a time-stratified NPWT approach to track acute-phase cytokine fluctuations in …

The conjugation of small ubiquitin-like modifiers (SUMO) to target proteins, known as SUMOylation, plays a crucial role in regulating protein homeostasis, activity, interaction with other proteins, and subcellular localization. Loss of SUMOylation in nongrowing oocytes by conditional deletion of the E2 SUMO conjugating enzyme, Ube2i, at the primordial follicle stage leads to female sterility due to complex changes in oocyte development, including altered folliculogenesis, defective meiotic progression, and premature loss of the ovarian reserve. In this study, proteomics was used to compare control and Ube2i conditional knockout ovaries during the first wave of folliculogenesis to identify key differences that may …

Thoracic aortopathy is influenced by angiotensin II (AngII) and exhibits regional heterogeneity with the ascending aorta being particularly susceptible. In this region, smooth muscle cells (SMCs) and selected fibroblasts originate from the second heart field (SHF) and cardiac neural crest (CNC). While our previous study revealed a critical role of SHF-derived cells in AngII-mediated aortopathy, the contribution of CNC-derived cells remains unclear. To investigate lineage-specific responses to AngII, Mef2c-Cre R26RmT/mG mice were infused with AngII. Ascending aortas were harvested at baseline or after 3 days of infusion, representing the prepathological phase. Cells were sorted based on their embryonic origins and …

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are defined by their capacity to regenerate all main components of peripheral blood, but individual HSCs exhibit a range of preferences for generating downstream cell types. Their propensities are thought to be epigenetically encoded, but few differential regulatory mechanisms have been identified. In this work, we explored the role of DNA methyltransferase 3A (DNMT3A) in the megakaryocyte-biased HSC population, which is thought to reside at the top of the hematopoietic hierarchy. We demonstrate that heterozygous loss of DNMT3A (Dnmt3a+/-) in these megakaryocyte-biased HSCs has distinct consequences compared with the rest of the HSC pool. These megakaryocyte-biased …

Making "Monsters" Of Women: A Case Study Of Tradwives And Childless Cat Ladies, Greta Gustafson

COD Library Student Research and Award Symposium

The presentation, once a podcast, examines how the dialectic of "tradwives" and "childless cat ladies" reflects greater us vs. them dynamics described by "Monster Theory". To begin, the presentation explores the rise of these two reductionist caricatures and their influence on political divisiveness. The presentation also addresses how the us vs. them politics these caricatures contribute to distract from real societal progress and proposes what could be done about it.
