Using Hydrologic And Hydraulic Simulations To Predict Near-Term Effects Of Beaver Habitat Restoration On Flood Flows, Luke S. Stewart
Using Hydrologic And Hydraulic Simulations To Predict Near-Term Effects Of Beaver Habitat Restoration On Flood Flows, Luke S. Stewart
Master's Theses
There is a growing need to predict the complex hydrologic and hydraulic effects of beaver-maintained wetlands. This study uses relatively simple inputs and a replicable methodology to predict flood flow impacts of beaver habitat restoration at the site design scale using the engineering industry’s customary hydrology and hydraulic modeling approach. This study focuses on Toro Creek, the primary drainage for a 15.2 square mile watershed on the California Central Coast.
A hydrologic model of Toro Creek watershed was developed in HEC-HMS to approximate saturated soil conditions typical of late-spring flooding events observed in the region. The hydrologic model was calibrated …

The Northern Elephant Seals (Mirounga Angustirostris) Of The Piedras Blancas Colony: A Story Of Recolonization, Monitoring And Movement, Mackenzie Davidson
Master's Theses
Northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) are large, ocean migrating carnivores that have a wide distribution along the west coast of North America. Like other pinniped species, northern elephant seals spend considerable time out at sea foraging and return to land to molt and breed. Northern elephant seals were hunted to near extinction in the late 1800s. Due to conservation efforts they have since rebounded, and they currently occupy 27 known terrestrial breeding colonies. Much literature has documented the recolonization, population dynamics, and dispersion of this species. Currently, Piedras Blancas (San Simeon, California) is the largest mainland breeding colony of northern …
Myceli-Yum: Elucidating Structure-Property Relationships For Polymer Degradation By Mycelial Digestion, Jordan Scott Ford
Myceli-Yum: Elucidating Structure-Property Relationships For Polymer Degradation By Mycelial Digestion, Jordan Scott Ford
Master's Theses
Since the industrial entrance of polymer plastic materials, plastic has become ubiquitous in both everyday use and waste. Due to inefficiencies and knowledge gaps, current recycling methods are not able to account for the high scale of plastic waste, resulting in the bulk of this waste being landfilled, mishandled, and deposited in the environment. Mycelium, the microorganism responsible for fruiting mushroom bodies and mold growth, holds potential to reduce plastic waste and can potentially be utilized as a method of industrial recycling. Following a drug-design approach, the active site of mycelial enzymes responsible for natural biopolymer degradation have been assessed …
The Effect Of Whole Fruits High In Anthocyanins On Markers Of Glycemic Control In Women, Sophia C. Johnson
The Effect Of Whole Fruits High In Anthocyanins On Markers Of Glycemic Control In Women, Sophia C. Johnson
Master's Theses
Cardiometabolic diseases are a significant health burden worldwide and remain the leading cause of death among adults in the United States. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a central component of cardiometabolic dysfunction and substantially increases the risk for cardiovascular disease. As women enter the post-menopausal period, significant declines in estrogen levels lead to a heightened risk of T2DM in this population. Observational and experimental evidence has shown potential for fruits high in anthocyanins (ACs) to reduce the risk of T2DM and improve glycemic control. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the current research on whole fruits high in ACs …

The Chumash War Of 1824: Revolution And Counterrevolution In The California Missions Santa Inés, Santa Barbara, And La Purísima, Joseph V. Payne
Master's Theses
In 1824, the Indigenous Chumash of Missions Santa Inés, Santa Barbara, and La Purísima de Concepción went to war against the settler-colonial system that bonded them to the mission lands and forced labor regime demanded by the Spanish Franciscan missionaries and compelled by Mexican military force in Alta California. The conflict lasted months and included violent battles and skirmishes at all three missions, the militant occupation and reclamation of La Purísima, a mass exodus to the interior of the territory, and the subsequent counterrevolutionary collaboration of the Spanish missionaries and Mexican military to return many (but not all) of the …

Development Of A Novel Bio-Mimetic Ornithopter With Variable Flapping Angle, Geourg Kivijian
Master's Theses
From the beginnings of flight, flapping-winged flight has been a goal of many engineers to mimic and replicate. With gains in aerodynamic efficiency of flight and certain other favorable characteristics such as reduced noise, higher maneuverability, and surveillance opportunities in urban environments, flapping-wing aerial vehicle(FWAV) designs are consistently pursued in many corners of academia and industry. This thesis goes into the development of a flapping wing aerial vehicle with a Bio-mimetic novel drive mechanism that is cable-driven and can produce variable amplitude and frequency flapping stroke. Employing a Field-Oriented Control (FOC) Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motor, paired with a bio-mimetic …
Density-Dependent Habitat Selection And Home Range Sizes In A Recovering Population Of Island Foxes (Urocyon Littoralis) On Santa Rosa Island, California, Kathleen B. Elder
Density-Dependent Habitat Selection And Home Range Sizes In A Recovering Population Of Island Foxes (Urocyon Littoralis) On Santa Rosa Island, California, Kathleen B. Elder
Master's Theses
Understanding factors that affect how animals select their home ranges is critical for proper species management, especially for threatened and endemic species. Density-dependent factors can be particularly difficult to understand because studying them requires large fluctuations in population size. The island fox (Urocyon littoralis), endemic to the California Channel Islands, has experienced dramatic fluctuations in population size making it an excellent candidate for studying the effects of density on home range size and habitat selection. In 2009, researchers on Santa Rosa Island took advantage of this “natural experiment” to document fox home ranges and habitat selection at a …

From Conflict to Clarity: Resolving Data Differences in Habitat Assessments to Inform Conservation Priorities for the Giant Kangaroo Rat
Caroline MacKenzie
Conservation strategies frequently rely on habitat suitability models, habitat assessments and species occurrence data to identify areas for protection. However, these methods often produce conflicting inference on species presence and habitat quality, complicating management decisions. This study builds on prior work which used three distinct methods to guide conservation planning for the endangered Giant Kangaroo Rat (Dipodomys ingens): habitat suitability modeling based on abiotic predictors, aerial imagery to assess habitat quality through visible burrow mounds and live-trapping …
Effect Of Household Oil Contamination And Agricultural Soil Contamination On Phyllosilicate Nanocatalyst Performance During Pyrolysis Of Polyolefins, Joey Velasquez
Master's Theses
The effect of household oil and agricultural soil contamination on catalyst performance during polyolefin pyrolysis was simulated on mixed virgin plastic pellets by evaluating contamination influence on mixed plastic degradation temperatures. Three phyllosilicate nanocatalysts including Fulcat435, Fulcat22F and Y-Zeolite were evaluated in this work based on a literature review of catalyzed plastic pyrolysis and these catalysts’ ability to lower plastic decomposition temperature by 50 °C – 100 °C. These findings were confirmed in this research through thermogravimetric analysis of a polyolefin mixture and further developed in furnace experiments containing household oil and agricultural contamination. Household oil contamination deactivated each of …

Looking For The Public In Public Law, Nikhil Menezes, David E. Pozen
Looking For The Public In Public Law, Nikhil Menezes, David E. Pozen
Faculty Scholarship
The “public” is everywhere and nowhere in contemporary public law. Everywhere, in that the term is constantly invoked to justify and explain existing arrangements. Nowhere, in that serious attempts to identify a relevant public and elicit its input are few and far between. Scholars and officials depict the U.S. public as playing myriad roles in governance — checking, guiding, approving, repudiating—without offering an account of how public preferences are formed or how they exercise influence on questions of interest.
This Article seeks to identify and call attention to the foundational dilemmas underlying this disconnect, to clarify their normative contours and …

This research note/paper examines several factors that have been mentioned and debated as determinants of how Britain moves from feudalism to mercantilism and then to capitalism by way of agricultural and industrial innovations and also how it arrives at the cusp of the industrial revolution. Of special interest are somewhat recent conjectures of macroeconomic data, investment estimates, and data on horses, serfs, and slaves of previous centuries that perhaps can better contribute to and add some clarification to the debates over the transition from feudalism to capitalism and the transition from an early form a capitalism or mercantilism to the …

The valorisation of underutilized male layer-type chickens offers a sustainable and ethically aligned opportunity for the poultry industry. This study evaluated the feasibility of male layer-type chicken meat in the production of chicken pâtés and compared the effects of different meat sources—commercial broiler (CP), and 5 (5wP) and 9-week-old (9wP) male layer-type chickens—on product quality during refrigerated storage using the general linear model with the Tukey–Kramer post-hoc test. Pâtés made from 5wP meat exhibited the most favourable technological properties, including the lowest (p < 0.05) total expressible fluid (TEF), highest (p < 0.05) water retention (TEFWater), and lowest (p < 0.05) fat content (TEFFat) than CP and 9wP indicating superior emulsion stability. The 5wP …
Analyzing Player Difficulty Perception In Platformers Through Procedural Level Generation, Sasank Madineni
Analyzing Player Difficulty Perception In Platformers Through Procedural Level Generation, Sasank Madineni
Master's Theses
Games utilizing Procedural Level Generation (PLG), such as Roguelikes, are becoming increasingly popular in today's gaming sphere. In games employing PLG, levels are generated randomly or pseudo-randomly, and aim to retain player attention through variance in levels between playthroughs. However, when generating levels with variance in structure and design, player enjoyment is often a mixed bag. With low enjoyment, player retention for these games can dwindle. This study explores the efficacy of real-time difficulty adjustment in procedurally generated platformers, as a method for maintaining stable player enjoyment without causing frustration. This thesis focuses on creating a short user experience, MIMEVA, …

Performance Comparison Of Plasmonic Sensors Via Ion Reduction And Koh Methods, Ruqaya Shlaga, Alwan Alwan, Mohammed Mohammed
Journal of Applied Sciences and Nanotechnology
In this work, several types of plasmonic sensors were prepared by different methods (ion reduction method and wet-chemical KOH route) to detect the ultralow anti-CIPRO concentration using AgNPs/PSi SERS-active substrate with AgNPs concentration. The process was optimized to be very effective in detecting CIPRO and to have a high amplification factor (EF). For the deposition of AgNPs with a concentration of 5×10-3 M and the maximum density of hotspot areas, a nanocrystalline silicon sample prepared by the KOH method and an ion reduction technique before etching was used. We tested an AgNPs/PSi SERS substrate, which showed better performance in detecting …

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
This study introduces an innovative approach to desertification susceptibility mapping by integrating q-rung orthopair fuzzy sets (Q-ROFS) with a neutrosophic environment. Conducted in Matrouh, Egypt, the research quantifies desertification risk through advanced modeling techniques that address uncertainty and non-linearity in environmental data. The Q-ROFS framework enhances risk prediction by capturing complex relationships among desertification indicators. Neutrosophic logic, meanwhile, effectively addresses imprecision and ambiguity. The resulting susceptibility map clearly distinguishes between vulnerable and non-vulnerable regions, offering valuable guidance for policymakers and planners. The analysis revealed that approximately 79.98% of the study area falls under moderate susceptibility, 14.27% under high susceptibility, and …

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Fuzzy sets, rough sets, hyperrough sets, intuitionistic fuzzy sets, neutrosophic sets, plithogenic sets , and other frameworks for handling uncertainty are under active research every day. These concepts can model a wide range of real-world phenomena and are frequently investigated to facilitate more efficient decision-making. IT Service Management is a systematic approach to designing, delivering, managing, and improving IT services in alignment with organizational objectives. In this paper, we explore the Mathematical Frameworks for Fuzzy IT Service Management (F-ITSM) and Neutrosophic IT Service Management (N-ITSM), which combine these uncertainty-based ideas with IT Service Management practices.

A Critical Evaluation Of The Criticisms Against Neutrosophic Statistical Methods, Muhammad Aslam, Abdulrahman Alaita, Florentin Smarandache
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Neutrosophic statistical analysis has gained attention for incorporating the degree of indeterminacy when analyzing imprecise and interval data under uncertainty–-an aspect often overlooked by classical statistics, fuzzy statistical analysis, and interval statistics. Recently, critical discussions have emerged regarding the use and applications of neutrosophic statistics, with some questioning its usefulness and validity. In this paper, we present a critical assessment of the existing literature, focusing on areas where misunderstandings and misinterpretations of neutrosophic statistical methods have occurred. We also examine flawed comparisons made between the results of neutrosophic statistics and interval statistics. Furthermore, substantial issues have been identified in the …

Cholesterol-loaded macrophage foam cells are a key feature of atherosclerotic plaques. Oxysterol-binding protein-related protein 2 (ORP2) facilitates the transport of cholesterol from lysosomes to the plasma membrane in cultured cell lines. However, the role of ORP2 in macrophages and its involvement in atherosclerosis remain unclear. In this study, we found ORP2 expression was reduced in atherosclerotic vessels and in macrophages exposed to oxidized LDL (ox-LDL). Myeloid-specific human ORP2 overexpression (hORP2MOE) mice were generated and crossed with atherosclerotic-prone ApoE−/− mice and then fed a high-fat diet (HFD) to induce atherosclerosis. Our results showed that myeloid-specific hORP2 overexpression significantly reduced the atherosclerotic …

Despite the fact that human adenovirus (HAdV) causes severe infections in immunosuppressed and immunocompetent individuals, especially in children, there is currently no specific treatment for these infections. Previously we reported a new salicylamide analogue, JMX0312, as a potent inhibitor of HAdV infection with low cytotoxicity in vitro. Here we evaluate the in vivo efficacy and safety of this molecule in the immunosuppressed Syrian hamster model of HAdV infection. JMX0312 administration at a dose of 6.25 mg/kg did not affect the body weight of the animals, and reduced the viral load in liver and blood in a similar way than cidofovir. …

Neuronal extracellular vesicles (microvesicles and exosomes) are emerging secreted vesicular signals that play important roles in the CNS. Currently, little is known about how glutamatergic signalling affects the subcellular localisation of exosome precursor intraluminal vesicles (ILVs), microRNA (miR) packaging into ILVs and in vivo spreading of neuronal EVs. By selectively labelling ILVs and exosomes (but not plasma membrane-derived MVs) with GFP-tagged human CD63 (hCD63-GFP) in cortical neurons, we found that glutamate stimulation significantly redistributes subcellular localisation of hCD63-GFP+ ILVs, especially decreasing its co-localisation with multi-vesicular body (MVB) marker Rab7 while substantially promoting EV secretion. Interestingly, glutamate stimulation only modestly alters …

The heterogeneity of the hematopoietic system was largely veiled by traditional bulk sequencing methods, which measure the averaged signals from mixed cellular populations. In contrast, single-cell sequencing has enabled the direct measurement of individual signals from each cell, significantly enhancing our ability to unveil such heterogeneity. Building on these advances, numerous single-cell multi-omics techniques have been developed into high-throughput, routinely accessible platforms, delineating the precise relationships among different layers of the central dogma in molecular biology. These technologies have uncovered the intricate landscape of genetic clonality and transcriptional heterogeneity in both normal and malignant hematopoietic systems, highlighting their roles in …

Background: Pediatric liver tumors are predominantly primary malignant tumors, and complete tumor resection with sufficient preservation of liver tissue is crucial for improving prognosis. However, due to the delicate anatomical structure of the pediatric liver and the relatively large size of the tumors, especially in difficult cases, the surgical challenges are substantial. While precision liver surgery are widely applied in clinical practice, pediatric cases require more customized approaches. The application of three-dimensional (3D) visualization technology is crucial for enhancing surgical accuracy, allowing for precise preoperative planning and intraoperative guidance.

Inhibition of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) shows clinical benefit in metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) patients, but KRAS-mutations are known to confer resistance. However, recent reports highlight EGFR as a crucial target to be co-inhibited with RAS inhibitors for effective treatment of KRAS mutant CRC. Here, we investigated the tumor cell-intrinsic contribution of EGFR in KRASG12D tumors by establishing murine CRC organoids with key CRC mutations (KRAS, APC, TP53) and inducible EGFR deletion. Metabolomic, transcriptomic, and scRNA-analyses revealed that EGFR deletion in KRAS-mutant organoids reduced their phenotypic heterogeneity and activated a distinct cancer-stem-cell/WNT signature associated with reduced cell size …

Thoracic tumours represent a significant proportion of malignant cancers. While radiotherapy (RT) improves prognosis, it can also lead to side effects such as radiation-induced pneumonitis (RP). Since SIRT6 is involved in DNA repair, energy metabolism and inflammation, this study aims to investigate the expression of SIRT6 in lymphocytes as a potential biomarker and therapeutic target for RP. This study included 170 patients diagnosed with thoracic tumours, all of whom underwent thoracic RT. RP was evaluated and classified as severe RP (SRP) and lower as non-severe RP (NSRP). Analyses were performed using SPSS version 26.0 and the R. Among 170 patients …

Importance: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a severe mental illness characterized more by functional rather than structural brain abnormalities. The pattern of regional homogeneity (ReHo) deficits in MDD may relate to underlying regional hypoperfusion. Capturing this functional deficit pattern provides a brain pattern-based biomarker for MDD that is linked to the underlying pathophysiology.
Objective: To examine whether cortical ReHo patterns provide a replicable biomarker for MDD that is more sensitive than reduced cortical thickness and evaluate whether the ReHo MDD deficit pattern reflects regional cerebral blood flow (RCBF) deficit patterns in MDD and whether a regional vulnerability index (RVI) thus …

Despite the recent successes of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in treating advanced melanoma, durable clinical responses still remain limited. To boost immune responses, agents that target immune regulators, such as the Stimulator of Interferon Genes (STING) agonist cyclic GMP-AMP (cGAMP), are being investigated. However, their clinical translation is impeded by poor serum stability, rapid tissue clearance, and T-cell death due to off-target activation. Recently, a novel strategy termed Microbubble-assisted UltraSound-guided Immunotherapy of Cancer (MUSIC) has been reported to selectively deliver cGAMP directly into the cytosol of antigen-presenting cells with spatiotemporal control. The resulting activation of STING and downstream proinflammatory pathways …
