Effect Of Artemia Nauplii, Microencapsulated Diet And Their Combination On The Growth Of Koi Carp (Cyprinus Carpio Var. Koi) Fry, Mohamed Khalfan Alwahaibi, Wenresti G. Gallardo, Ahmed Al Souti, Mohammed Al Qarni
Journal of Agricultural and Marine Sciences
Koi carp (Cyprinus carpio var. koi) is an ornamental and economically important freshwater fish. Despite its global trade, knowledge on the suitable diet for optimum growth remains limited. To address this gap, we investigated the effect of microencapsulated diet, Artemia, and their combination on the weight gain of koi carp fry reared in glass tanks for six weeks at temperatures ranging from 29.5°C to 35.8°C. A total of 900 koi carps were randomly assigned to three treatments receiving different feed types at the same feeding time. Koi carp fry fed microencapsulated diet exhibited significantly higher (P < 0.05) final weight (0.42 g), weight gain (0.27 g) and specific growth rate (5.08%) compared to those fed Artemia nauplii only or the combination of both feeds. These results suggest that feeding koi carp with microencapsulated diet significantly improves the growth of koi carp fry in indoor tanks.

Effect Of Temperature And Salinity On The Survival Of Early Larval Stage Of Scalloped Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Homarus, Mohamed Al-Wahaibi, Wenresti Gallardo, Jupit Donoso, Michel Claereboudt
Journal of Agricultural and Marine Sciences
The scalloped spiny lobster, Panulirus homarus, is one of the most valuable and highly demanded seafood species. Due to its limited supply from the wild and its high value, commercial aquaculture of this species has gained considerable attention. However, information on the basic water quality requirements is yet to be explored. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of different levels of culture temperature and salinity on the survival of early larval stages of the scalloped spiny lobster, Panulirus homarus. Stage-one larvae were obtained from an egg-bearing broodstock and hatched at a temperature and salinity of 26 °C and …

In the FLE classroom, the properties of each textual typology are constantly discussed separately. However, it seems to us that the vast majority of learners apparently question the usefulness of all this in their experience. This observation is made in the light of the feedback loop. Since we are convinced that an effective teacher is one who regularly subjects his or her pedagogical actions to reflection, our contribution to the proceedings of this international symposium is intended as a contribution to the various strategies to be adopted with a view to shaping a methodical learner. We will show that the …

This article is intended to be an account of our scientific project, a project carried out by crossing disciplinary boundaries, going through several stages in order to achieve more decompartmentalized research, to adopt a multidisciplinary approach of stylistic, genetic and computer science. In order to approach the complex question of style in Flaubert, the one which represents the sovereign image of the writer par excellence, we followed in an initial phase a philological study, resembling the "study of genesis" in vogue at the turn of the century of the 19th and 20th centuries. After this work carried out on the …

This research is framed within the analysis of "teacher action" (Cicurel, 2013). It investigates the perspectives of educational in spectors regarding the didactic discourse of French as a foreign language teachers in the secondary vocational cycle within the Moroccan context. The objective is to gather and analyze the inspectorate's views on the concept of "enunciative shift" (Cicurel, 1996), which is defined as the transition from a relatively objective stance in didactic communication to an enunciative position that emphasizes the teacher's subjectivity during interactions with students. The inclusion of the inspection body is driven by a desire to deep enourin quiry, …

Portuguese For Mozambican Mothers – A Language Empowerment App, Josh Kindarara, Alexandre Lopes, Gwendolyn Patwardhan, Riana Santos, Sara Wheeler
Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses
In Mecúfi, Mozambique, the mothers of children who attend school through the DIFF EDUCATION program have a strong desire to learn Portuguese, the country’s national language, due to colonization. However, they have minimal formal education and little to no experience with technology. They are unable to read or write in any language, including their native language, Makhuwa, making many current educational resources unusable. This leaves these mothers without accessible, culturally relevant tools to help address their linguistic needs.
This project focuses on developing an educational application designed for non-literate mothers in rural Mozambique. The app emphasizes visual and auditory learning …
The Epistemological Dimension Of Dewey’S Emergentist Metaphysics: Sense And Signification, Andrii Leonov
The Epistemological Dimension Of Dewey’S Emergentist Metaphysics: Sense And Signification, Andrii Leonov
Center for Dewey Studies Essay Award
I argue that Dewey had a kind of naturalistic or pragmatic epistemology already in his Experience and Nature which constitutes the Pragmatic Epistemology View. Dewey’s naturalistic epistemology is exemplified by his theory of “sense” and “signification” and as such is the first order consequence of Dewey’s second order qualitative naturalism. Instead of the classical epistemological question, “How is knowledge possible anyway, überhaupt?”, Dewey’s pragmatically reconstructed version of it would be “How do we make sense of the world that is around us?” Instead of the classical “theory of knowledge,” Dewey’s pragmatic epistemology can be seen as a theory …

Delaunay Keyer For Colorspace-Local Matte Extraction And Spill Suppression, Isaac J. Criddle
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Keying is a fundamental, common, and expensive problem in visual effects. It consists of two subtasks: matte extraction and screen spill removal. Today’s standard keyers often fall short on edge cases including unevenly lit screens, fine detail, and sky replacements. As a result, keying continues to be a laborious process requiring highly trained compositors and complex bespoke setups. Our method does not assume one single saturated screen color, allowing for more versatile workflows. The keyer functions by interpolating over a Delaunay tetrahedralization of user-given sample colors. We evaluate our method relative to the visual effects industry’s standard keyers on a …

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by impaired blood glucose regulation and persistent hyperglycemia. The central nervous system functions as a key regulator in the maintenance of peripheral normoglycemia. Obesity, commonly associated with T2DM, often leads to chronic inflammation in the hypothalamus, a critical brain center for integrating metabolic feedback and controlling outputs to peripheral organs. However, the physiological mechanisms through which obesity-induced brain inflammation affects glucose regulation remain somewhat unclear. Previous studies have linked one key pro-inflammatory cytokine, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), to metabolic function and glycemic control; however, the exact nature of its …

The sensitivity of ram semen to cryobiological procedures has motivated many researchers to investigate this issue. In clinical practice, one of the main objectives is to reduce the damage caused by freezing cells through the addition of preservatives to semen diluents. In our study, fetal calf serum (15% FCS) and 3–6 mM cysteamine were added to ram semen diluents, and their effects on semen after freeze-thawing were investigated. Semen was collected from five Kıvırcık rams using an electroejaculator and combined in equal volumes (pooling). After macroscopic and microscopic examination, the samples were divided into six equal volumes. Six study groups …

Seasonal vertical migration of large lipid-rich copepods is often described as a mass descent of animals when primary production ceases, with important implications for mesopelagic food webs and global carbon sequestration. This view ignores the existence of surface-resident individuals, but here we show that non-migrants can form a substantial part of the populations of polar migrant species. In the Central Arctic Ocean, the biomass-dominant Calanus hyperboreus was evenly distributed throughout the water column from November 2019 to March 2020, with ~20% of subadults and adult females remaining in the upper 200 m and ~41% migrating to 1000–2000 m. These vertical …

Importance Of Outbreak Response Research In Bridging Knowledge Gaps On Emerging Infectious Diseases, Robert F Breiman, David Wang, Michael Diamond, Adrianus C M Boon, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
An important outcome of the devastating 2014 West African Ebola virus disease outbreak and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic has been the growing promotion of conducting research during outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) as a valuable and acceptable process of acquiring knowledge to enhance our ability to better prevent and control these diseases in the future. Recognising the unique opportunity during outbreaks to leverage increases in cases over a short time interval and in a circumscribed area, we articulate a systematic process of conducting EID outbreak response research, highlighting knowledge gaps that should be prioritised, and measures that can be …

California's Imperial Valley, with lithium-rich geothermal brines, extensive flat agricultural fields with abundant desert sunshine, and access to transmission lines, is a leading case to explore interconnected themes around just energy transitions. Despite being the poorest county in California and one of the smallest, Imperial already provides 15% of the state’s solar electricity, and the region as a whole represents on the order of 25% of the state’s electric power capacity. This paper brings to light frictions over solar energy development that have emerged over the history of solar power development in the southern Salton Sea region. It describes the …

To explore the potential of site-selectively radiolabeled antibody-drug conjugates (ADC) against solid tumors, we constructed and evaluated radiolabeled ADCs equipped with lutetium-177 (177Lu) and a membrane-permeable antimitotic agent. Site-selective 177Lu-labeled ADCs [anti-trophoblast cell-surface antigen 2 (TROP2) 177Lu-DTPA ADCs or anti-HER2 177Lu-DO3A ADCs], a 177Lu-labeled homogeneous radioimmunoconjugate (homogeneous RIC), and 177Lu-labeled conventional RIC (heterogeneous RIC) were constructed. We confirmed that 177Lu-labeled ADCs and the homogeneous RIC were obtained with high homogeneity and defined chelator/payload-to-antibody ratios. Next, we performed biodistribution studies and treatment efficacy studies in xenograft mouse models bearing orthotopic breast tumors. Compared with the heterogeneous RIC, the 177Lu-DTPA TROP2 ADC …

Vascular endothelial growth factor receptors (VEGFRs) are key regulators of angiogenesis, lymphangiogenesis, and vascular permeability, playing essential roles in both physiological and pathological processes. The VEGFR family, including VEGFR-1, VEGFR-2, and VEGFR-3, interacts with structurally related VEGF ligands (VEGFA, VEGFB, VEGFC, VEGFD, and placental growth factor [PlGF]), activating downstream signaling pathways that mediate critical cellular processes, including proliferation, migration, and survival. Dysregulation of VEGFR signaling has been implicated in numerous diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular conditions, and inflammatory disorders. Targeting VEGFRs with radiopharmaceuticals, such as radiolabeled peptides, antibodies, and specific tracers like 64Cu-bevacizumab and 89Zr-ramucirumab, has emerged as a powerful …

The genetic improvement of local chicken breeds is essential for sustainability and adaptability. Marker-assisted breeding can increase the response to selection; however, it requires the identification of marker associations with different traits. Therefore, the current study aimed to evaluate the association between microsatellite marker alleles and the body weight of juvenile chicks over three subsequent generations. Ten microsatellites were used to genotype four chicken lines (two selected and two randombred) across three generations. The lines included the normally feathered selected line (CE1), the normally feathered randombred line (CE2) used as a genetic control for CE1, the naked-neck selected line (CE3), …

Deep Learning Based Rapid X-Ray Fluorescence Signal Extraction And Image Reconstruction For Preclinical Benchtop X-Ray Fluorescence Computed Tomography Applications, Amrit Kaphle, Sandun Jayarathna, Sang Hyun Cho
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Recent research advances have resulted in an experimental benchtop X-ray fluorescence computed tomography (XFCT) system that likely meets the imaging dose/scan time constraints for benchtop XFCT imaging of live mice injected with gold nanoparticles (GNPs). For routine in vivo benchtop XFCT imaging, however, additional challenges, most notably the need for rapid/near-real-time handling of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) signal extraction and XFCT image reconstruction, must be successfully addressed. Here we propose a novel end-to-end deep learning (DL) framework that integrates a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D CNN) for rapid XRF signal extraction with a U-Net model for XFCT image reconstruction. PARP inhibitors sensitize pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) to radiation by inducing DNA damage and replication stress. These mechanisms also have the potential to enhance radiation-induced type I interferon (T1IFN) mediated anti-tumoral immune responses. We hypothesized that the PARP inhibitor olaparib would also potentiate radiation-induced T1IFN to promote anti-tumor immune responses and sensitization of otherwise resistant PDAC to immunotherapy. To test this hypothesis, we assessed the effects of olaparib and radiation on T1IFN production and sensitivity to αPD-L1 immunotherapy, as well as on the tumor microenvironment by single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq). We found that olaparib enhanced T1IFN production following radiation and …

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) are the most aggressive molecular subtypes of breast cancer. Poor clinical outcomes highlight the pressing need to discover novel targets for the effective treatment of these diseases. LMP7 (β5i/PSMB8), a proteolytic subunit of the immunoproteasome, is implicated in the pathogenesis of multiple myeloma, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, and inflammation-related cancers. However, the role of LMP7 in TNBC and IBC remains poorly characterized. Here, we evaluated the function of LMP7 in TNBC and IBC using the selective LMP7 inhibitor M3258. In human TNBC patient samples, LMP7 expression correlated strongly with CD8+ T …

Immunosuppressive myeloid cells are critical obstacles to T cell-centered immune checkpoint blockade therapies, which have been successful in treating a fraction of patients with cancer. How tumor cells interact with myeloid cells to regulate immune responses and tumor development is unclear. In this study, we report that certain membrane tyrosine kinase Eph receptors, including EphA7 and EphB1, specifically bind the immune inhibitory receptors leukocyte Ig-like receptor family B 5 (LILRB5) and LILRB2. These Eph receptors induce LILRB5-mediated signaling activation, and LILRB5 also activates Eph receptor signaling. Activation of LILRB5 promoted immunosuppressive marker expression and inhibited activating marker expression on myeloid …

We trained …

Microvascular proliferation (MVP) is a disease-defining hallmark of glioblastoma and other World Health Organization grade 4 gliomas. MVP also serves as a poor prognostic marker in various solid tumors. Despite its clinical significance, the mechanisms and biological consequences of MVP are controversial and remain unclear. In this study, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing on paired CD45-CD105+ vascular/perivascular stromal cells (PVSC) and CD45+CD105± immune cells from 16 primary glioma patient samples, both with and without MVP. This analysis revealed the presence of developmentally related mesenchymal stem cells alongside cancer-associated fibroblasts, pericytes, fibromyocytes, and smooth muscle cells within the CD45-CD105+ compartment. RNA …

This paper examines the methodological and ethical challenges of conducting remoteresearch on child-animal relationships across thirty communities in seventeen countriesduring the COVID-19 pandemic. It critically assesses remote research as a mode ofcollaboration informed by decolonial aspirations, highlighting the complexities of navigatingtemporal and geographical distances, mitigating global inequalities, and addressing politicaland methodological tensions at the intersection of psychological anthropology and crosscultural developmental psychology. By engaging with these challenges, the paper fosterscritical dialogue on research ethics and methodologies between anthropology andpsychology, advancing a broader intellectual engagement toward translocal equity
