Artificial Intelligence And Privacy, Daniel J. Solove
Artificial Intelligence And Privacy, Daniel J. Solove
Florida Law Review
This Article aims to establish a foundational understanding of the intersection between artificial intelligence (AI) and privacy, outlining the current problems AI poses to privacy and suggesting potential directions for the law’s evolution in this area. Thus far, few commentators have explored the overall landscape of how AI and privacy interrelate. This Article seeks to map that territory.
Some commentators question whether privacy law is appropriate for addressing AI. In this Article, I contend that although existing privacy law falls far short of resolving the privacy problems with AI, privacy law properly conceptualized and constituted would go a long way …

Examining The Anxiolytic Effects Of Flavonoids In Passionflower: A Gut-Brain Axis Perspective, Khelen R. Walsh
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
This literature review investigates the influence of Passiflora incarnata on the Gut-Brain Axis, focusing on the role of flavonoids and the specific biological mechanisms involved in this process. The study aims to identify Passiflora incarnata as a practical, non-harmful, and cost-effective alternative to current modern anxiety medications. This study also emphasizes the need for further clinical trials to integrate Passiflora incarnata further into healthcare settings. Using a narrative review approach, this analysis will examine pre-existing empirical articles, all of which have been found on credible sites, are peer-reviewed, and have been published within the past twenty-five years. The data discussed …
Social Emotional Learning With Children And Social Cognitive Therapies Used In Treatment For Schizophrenia: What Is The Relationship Between Them?, Lynette Marie Lubiak
Social Emotional Learning With Children And Social Cognitive Therapies Used In Treatment For Schizophrenia: What Is The Relationship Between Them?, Lynette Marie Lubiak
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
Why has mental illness in our children let alone society increased so significantly? In this paper I am doing a lit review to understand the need for a structured lesson plan of Social Emotional Learning (S.E.L.) and incorporating some techniques of social cognitive therapies for our children. This will be understood by comparing social cognitive therapies in Schizophrenia treatment that rewires healthy neural pathways from miswired neural pathways that are not functional in schizophrenia and the impact on a person with schizophrenia having difficulties to integrate into society while coping with their illness. I will do this by analyzing Theory …

Phenotypic Characterisation Of Staphylococcus Aureus And Escherichia Coli Clinical Isolates And Their Susceptibility To Targeted Bacteriophages, Shauna K. Hurley, Laura O'Connell, Michael Callanan, Aidan Coffey
ORBioM (Open Research BioSciences Meeting)
Abstract:
Antibiotic resistance (AMR) is the one of the biggest threats facing humans and animals in the 21st century. This has been caused by the overuse and misuse of antibiotics leading to the desperate need for innovative therapeutic alternatives. Research is ongoing regarding the use of bacteriophages as a possible viable antimicrobial agent. However, various limitations exist which hinder their use including their narrow host range. This limitation poses a significant threat to the development of phage therapies as it requires phenotypic characterisation of clinical isolates to ensure compatibility between strains and phage. This study outlines phenotypic characterisation of …
Selecting For Less: How Much Methane Can We Truly Breed Away?, Sean B. Crowley
Selecting For Less: How Much Methane Can We Truly Breed Away?, Sean B. Crowley
ORBioM (Open Research BioSciences Meeting)
Background
Genetic selection has potential to reduce enteric methane emissions from cattle, but a key challenge is determining how much of the genetic variation in methane traits is independent of traits already targeted in breeding programs, such as feed intake and growth.
Methods
Methane and carbon dioxide emissions were recorded in 1,700 crossbred, indoor-fed beef cattle using Greenfeed systems. Performance data included feed intake, metabolic liveweight, average daily gain, carcass weight, and ultrasound and skeletal traits. Genetic parameters and correlations among traits were estimated using animal linear mixed models to quantify the independence of methane-related genetic variation.
Results
Daily methane …
Exploiting Genomics To Advance Genetic Gain For Reproductive Traits In Sheep, Mujibur Rahman
Exploiting Genomics To Advance Genetic Gain For Reproductive Traits In Sheep, Mujibur Rahman
ORBioM (Open Research BioSciences Meeting)
Poor reproductive performance has a negative impact on the profitability of sheep production systems with the number of lambs reared highlighted as a key driver of farm profitability. Nevertheless, the genetic improvement of reproductive traits in sheep has been constrained by their low heritability and pleiotropic nature. Understanding the underlying genetic architecture can improve genomic prediction estimates and enhance genetic gain.
This study will utilize large-scale genomic and phenotypic datasets to enhance genetic gain in sheep reproductive traits through four approaches: 1) to determine the effect of inbreeding depression on reproduction, 2) to identify causal variants impacting reproductive performance through …

Maximum Convergence Voting: Madisonian Consitutional Theory And Electoral System Design, Edward B. Foley
Maximum Convergence Voting: Madisonian Consitutional Theory And Electoral System Design, Edward B. Foley
Florida Law Review
The Madisonian political philosophy upon which the U.S. Constitution rests did not supply the nation with a well-developed theory of electoral procedures. Instead, Madisonian philosophy concentrated on the separation of powers and other elements of constitutional architecture, including federalism, in order to prevent factions from subverting the common good. Subsequent history has demonstrated that Madisonian constitutional architecture, while necessary, is not sufficient for democratic government to operate in the interest of the people as a whole, rather than on behalf of a faction and its own interests. Instead, it is necessary to supplement Madisonian constitutional architecture with a well-designed electoral …
Originalism, Election Law, And Democratic Self-Government, Joshua S. Sellers
Originalism, Election Law, And Democratic Self-Government, Joshua S. Sellers
Florida Law Review
Originalism has a democracy problem. Among prevailing theories of constitutional interpretation—pragmatism, common-law constitutionalism, popular constitutionalism, and Elysian representation-reinforcement—originalism uniquely creates a legal environment in which antidemocracy is viable. That is, it uniquely imperils democratic structures, practices, and norms that are essential to modern democratic self-government. This fundamental flaw is most apparent when considering the relationship between election law (a conspicuously non-originalist area of law) and originalism. Accordingly, this Article uses election law as a heuristic for illustrating one of originalism’s central deficiencies. It is the first extended treatment of election law and originalism—a topic of heightened salience following the Supreme …

Authenticity In Historical Fiction, Reaghan Sara-Anne Avery
Authenticity In Historical Fiction, Reaghan Sara-Anne Avery
Masters Theses
Authenticity is often debated in the field of literature. It’s an element that attests to an author’s credibility and a work’s originality, specifically the measure of an author’s genuine intent and the historical veracity of the work, including the genre of historical fiction. Authenticity can be defined in twofold terminology: those being the idealism and the factual, historically based evidence of the piece. Assessing a work’s authenticity by analyzing its believability and relatability is a three-part process that includes looking at the realistic dialogue, sensory and detailed language, and historical elements in a given text. The partial novel below entitled, …
A Missionary's Memoirs: Mongolia Revisited, Isaac Smith
A Missionary's Memoirs: Mongolia Revisited, Isaac Smith
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This is my story. It is a very personal story, but one that I want to share with others. Although it takes place predominantly in Mongolia, it is not merely a story about Mongolia, or even the Mongolian people. It is not really even a story about me. What is it then? It is a story about faith and love. It is an attempt to better understand how the gospel of Jesus Christ intricately fits into people’s lives all over the world—even in Mongolia. It is a compilation of essays, of memoirs, of my experiences. It is a story about …

Dna-Damaging Chemotherapy Reshapes The Immune Landscape Of The Heart, Ruijun He
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Heart failure and ischemic heart disease represent the most common causes of death among cancer survivors. With the tremendous progress in last few decades that empowered early cancer diagnosis and treatment, the population of cancer survivors has been rapidly growing and by 2040, the number is projected to be 26 million. However, despite extensive studies on chemotherapies, there exists a limited understanding of how exposure to chemotherapy reagents impacts heart function in the long term. Moreover, while the roles of immune landscape in heart diseases have recently been revealed, how chemotherapy reagents influence the cardiac immune cells is poorly understood. …
Hierarchy Viz: A Visual Analytics Framework For Visualizing Hierarchical Data Using Machine Learning, Vinay Kumar Uppalapati
Hierarchy Viz: A Visual Analytics Framework For Visualizing Hierarchical Data Using Machine Learning, Vinay Kumar Uppalapati
Theses and Dissertations
Automated visualization systems aim to generate visualizations directly from raw data with minimal user inputs. However, while existing systems focus on data visualizations mainly using line charts and scatter plots to explore the data patterns, they struggle with hierarchical data representation where data relationship is essential. Hierarchical visualization, crucial for understanding multi-level relationships, typically requires users to manually define hierarchies and have expertise in visualization tools to create meaningful representations. This makes the process complex, time-consuming, and reliant on domain knowledge. To address this, we propose HierarchyViz, an automated system that detects multiple hierarchies in raw datasets and generates intuitive …

The macrolide class of antibiotics are widely utilized in clinical settings for a broad range of bacterial infections and have additional roles as immunomodulatory agents. Although efficacious with a good safety profile overall, they have been associated with prolongation of the QT interval and development of the polymorphic ventricular tachycardia, Torsades de pointes (TdP). In a 2020 scientific statement, the American Heart Association (AHA) classified azithromycin, clarithromycin and erythromycin as QT-prolonging drugs known to cause TdP and the online database, CredibleMeds, that maintains a list of drugs known to cause QT prolongation classifies these drugs as having an increased risk …

The Not-So Wonderful World Of Disney: How Disney Films Usurp What Is In The Bible, Jacquelyn Irene Cortez
The Not-So Wonderful World Of Disney: How Disney Films Usurp What Is In The Bible, Jacquelyn Irene Cortez
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Disney films are often chosen as entertainment for families and their main target audience is children. While many adults still choose to watch these films, there is a darker side to these films. A majority of these films depict magic and/or witchcraft in them. The ideologies of feminism and toxic masculinity are on display in many of their films. And finally, a lot of these films mock God and what is in the Bible. When looking at popular films such as The Little Mermaid and Frozen, these films are teaching children about magic and making deals with the devil. Disney’s …

The nucleolus is a membraneless organelle and an excellent stress sensor. Any changes in its architecture or composition lead to nucleolar stress, resulting in cell cycle arrest and interruption of ribosomal activity, critical factors in aging and cancer. In this study, we identified and described the pivotal role of the RNA-binding protein HNRNPK in ribosome and nucleolar dynamics. We developed an in vitro model of endogenous HNRNPK overexpression and an in vivo mouse model of ubiquitous HNRNPK overexpression. These models showed disruptions in translation as the HNRNPK overexpression caused alterations in the nucleolar structure, resulting in p53-dependent nucleolar stress, cell …

The Colors Of Good And Evil: A Quantitative Study On The Effect Of Disney Animated Feature Films On Audience Color Association, Grace Mallory Hayes
Masters Theses
The purpose of this quantitative research study was to determine what impact Disney animated feature films have on audience color association. The problem is that Disney assigns colors to certain movie roles that are in contrast to what color theory posits or would assume. This study sought to determine if audiences that are highly saturated in Disney animated feature films receive a different message from colors than someone who does not regularly consume Disney films. This research examines the impact of Disney habitually assigning colors to characters in contrast to their traditional meaning on the emotional association of viewers through …

Beyond The Genome: The Racialized Exposome, Flourishing, And Stress Biology In African Americans, A Non-Exhaustive Review, Enye Washington
University Honors Theses
Racial health disparities remain an enduring challenge in the United States, disproportionately impacting African American communities through higher rates of chronic disease and premature mortality. This non-exhaustive literature explores how the racialized exposome - a term denoting the totality of social, environmental, and structural stressors rooted in systemic racism - biologically embeds itself via stress-responsive pathways. Specifically, it examines the interaction between racial stress, flourishing, and key biological markers, including allostatic load and telomere length, considering the gut-brain axis. The review highlights robust evidence that chronic exposure to racial discrimination and structural adversity contributes to multisystem dysregulation and accelerated cellular …

Mucopolysaccharidosis IVA (MPS IVA) is an autosomal recessive disorder that causes the accumulation of keratan sulfate (KS) and chondroitin-6-sulfate in bone and cartilage. This results in progressive skeletal dysplasia, with no effective treatment available. Our study hypothesized that direct lentiviral vector (LV) gene therapy could produce active enzymes from transduced cells, impacting bone and cartilage lesions in MPS IVA. We developed LVs carrying the GALNS gene under three promoters: ubiquitous (CBh), collagen type II (COL2A1), and Mac-1 integrin subunit (CD11b). At the newborn stage and 4 weeks, Galns-knockout mice received intravenous injections at different doses (5 × 109 …
