Dietary Nitrogen And Its Role In The Gut Microbiome And Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Narrative Review, Matthew Herrera, Lauri O. Byerley
School of Medicine Faculty Publications
In recent years, gut microbiota has emerged as a critical regulator of gastrointestinal health and disease, with its role in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)—including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis—being particularly significant. Among the many factors influencing the gut microbiota, dietary components such as fibers, fats, and polyphenols have received substantial attention. However, nitrogen-containing compounds, such as amino acids, nitrates, urea, and even nucleic acids, such as purines, remain underexplored despite their integral role in shaping microbial ecology, host metabolism, and immune responses. Some of these compounds are metabolized by gut bacteria into bioactive molecules such as short-chain fatty acids, ammonia, …

Liposome-Encapsulated Antibiotics For The Therapy Of Mycobacterial Infections †, Metin Yıldırım, Nejat Düzgüneş
Pacific Faculty Work
About a quarter of the world’s population is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Growing antibiotic resistance by this microorganism is a major problem in the therapy of the disease. M. avium-M. intracellulare that emerged as a major opportunistic infection of HIV/AIDS continues to afflict immunocompromised individuals. We describe the use of liposome-encapsulated antibiotics in the experimental and clinical therapy of mycobacterial infections, as well as recent experimental liposomal vaccines against tuberculosis. Liposome-mediated intravenous or inhalational delivery of antibiotics enhances the antibacterial effects of the drugs, particularly for infections of resident macrophages, where the liposomes are passively targeted. Despite experimental successes of …

Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) and M. synoviae (MS) are important pathogens causing significant economic losses in poultry production. Disease prevention and control strategies include vaccination, antimicrobial therapy, and strict biosecurity measures. The present study provides, for the first time, both minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum mycoplasmacidal concentration (MMC) values as antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Thai MG and MS field isolates. This study aimed to evaluate the susceptibility of five MG and ten MS isolates to various antimycoplasma drugs: doxycycline, lincomycin-spectinomycin, tiamulin, tilmicosin, tylosin, and tylvalosin, using a microdilution broth assay. For MG isolates, tilmicosin had the highest mean MIC (12.5 …
Empirical Analysis Of Incentivized Energy Assessment Recommendations And Iiot Cost-Effectiveness In U.S. Smes, Fatemeh Ghafari
Empirical Analysis Of Incentivized Energy Assessment Recommendations And Iiot Cost-Effectiveness In U.S. Smes, Fatemeh Ghafari
LSU Master's Theses
The industrial sector in the United States accounted for 33% of total energy consumption in 2022. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which comprise 99.9% of U.S. businesses present a critical opportunity for energy efficiency improvements. Although energy audits provide actionable Assessment Recommendations (ARs) to reduce consumption, high implementation costs remain a key barrier to adoption.
While prior studies have explored rebate programs, most are limited to residential and commercial sectors or focus narrowly on specific technologies or geographic areas for the industrial sector. The objective of this study is to empirically investigate the “Incentivized Assessment Recommendation” (IAR) trends and to …

Epigenetic modifications directly regulate the patterns of gene expression by altering DNA accessibility and chromatin structure. A knowledge gap is presented by the need to directly measure these modifications, especially for unannotated organisms with unknown primary histone sequences. In the present work, we developed and applied a novel workflow for identifying and annotating histone proteoforms directly from mass spectrometry-based measurements for the endangered Caribbean coral Acropora cervicornis. Combining high-accuracy de novo top-down and bottom-up analysis based on tandem liquid chromatography, trapped ion mobility spectrometry, non-ergodic electron-based fragmentation, and high-resolution mass spectrometry, near complete primary sequence (up to 99%) and over …

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a debilitating joint disease characterized by cartilage degeneration, synovial inflammation, and bone remodeling, with limited therapeutic options targeting the underlying pathophysiology. Mechanosensitive ion channels Piezo1 and Piezo2 play crucial roles in chondrocyte responses to mechanical stress, mediating mechanotransduction pathways that influence chondrocyte survival, matrix production, and inflammatory signaling, but their distinct contributions to OA pathogenesis remain unclear.
METHODS: Using inducible, chondrocyte-specific Aggrecan-Cre (Acan) mice, we investigated Piezo1, Piezo2, and combined Piezo1/2 conditional knockouts (cKOs) using the destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) model of post-traumatic OA in male and female mice. Pain and behavioral assessments were …

Metastable epialleles (MEs) are genomic loci at which epigenetic marks are established stochastically during early embryonic development and maintained during subsequent differentiation and throughout life, leading to stable epigenetic and phenotypic variation among genetically identical individuals. Although MEs were first described in mice over 20 years ago, the extent of epigenetic metastability in the mouse genome remains unknown. We present the first unbiased genome-wide screen for MEs in mice. Using deep whole-genome bisulfite sequencing across tissues derived from the three embryonic germ layers in isogenic C57BL/6J mice, we identified only 29 MEs, precisely localizing them and documenting their rarity. Consistent …
The Physical Characteristics Linked To The Perception Of Criminality Of Female Offenders, Jennifer Anne Chapman
The Physical Characteristics Linked To The Perception Of Criminality Of Female Offenders, Jennifer Anne Chapman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Gender disparities can be seen throughout the criminal justice system, where females are seen as weak and incapable of causing harm. This quantitative study sought to add to the existing research regarding physical characteristics linked to criminality. The labeling theory explains how physical characteristics labeled as deviant can alter a person’s perception when deciding whether an individual is violent. The research questions explored the physical characteristics linked to the perception of violent female offenders as well as the relationship between the gender of the participant and their ability to successfully identify a violent female offender. A mixture of statistical designs …
Impacts Of Permafrost Thaw And Methane Cycling In A Northern Peatland, Hannah Defelice
Impacts Of Permafrost Thaw And Methane Cycling In A Northern Peatland, Hannah Defelice
Theses
Climate change is disproportionately impacting high latitude regions, resulting in thawing permafrost, changes in vegetation, hydrology and greenhouse gas emissions. As permafrost thaws in peatlands, ground subsidence occurs, resulting in a transition from elevated palsa to lower, wetter bogs and fens. Changes in vegetation and hydrology with thaw result in increased methane (CH4) fluxes and distinctive shifts in the carbon isotope signature of porewater and emitted CH4. Previous research has established the differences between these landcover classes; however, we know little about how CH4 cycling processes change during land class transitions. To address this gap, we compared recently formed bogs …

Dissertations and Theses
I, as in We is a hybrid collection of poems, essays, fictional letters, documents, and photographs through which the author revisits ancestors and explores their multiracial roots. Drawing on stories, interviews and research grounded in the Japanese American experience, the collection develops a call-and-response polyvocality that spans generations and geographies. In its use of white space, form experimentation, and tonal shifts, the work confronts the fluid, often ambiguous boundaries that shape identity. The compiled written and visual materials evolve into an original document--one that reaches toward heritage, belonging, and truth.
Novel Tools And Datamining Techniques To Visualize And Interpret Historical Sugarcane Datasets, Zachary A. Taylor
Novel Tools And Datamining Techniques To Visualize And Interpret Historical Sugarcane Datasets, Zachary A. Taylor
LSU Master's Theses
Heritable genetic variation is an essential raw ingredient of variety development programs. This variation is acted upon via selection by identifying elite progeny that can be utilized agronomically or exploited as parents. Sugarcane breeders are tasked with creating optimal genetic variation through crossing. Prior knowledge of pedigree and parental performance allows breeders to discern which crosses to prioritize, since the time to make crossing decisions and the space to evaluate tens and thousands of progenies are both limited resources in sugarcane variety development programs. In this project, we have updated and validated the U.S. sugarcane pedigree …

Solving Hierarchical Variational Inequality For Almost Mean Nonexpansive Mappings, Noor Saddam Taresh, Salwa Salman Abed
Solving Hierarchical Variational Inequality For Almost Mean Nonexpansive Mappings, Noor Saddam Taresh, Salwa Salman Abed
Baghdad Science Journal
A clear common method in solving some types of nonlinear problems is to exchange the original problem with a collection of regularized problems and all these regularized problems have exactly one solution. A particular solution of the original problem will be obtained as a limit of these unique solutions of the regularized problems. This idea is used to provide a method for the hierarchical fixed point approach to solving variational inequality problems (VIPs). In this work, we intend to study two new iterative schemes by examining their strong convergence to a common fixed point for mappings defined for a nonempty …
Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor Effects On The Mesolimbic Dopamine Circuitry And Adaptations With Chronic Ethanol Exposure, Rachel Ji-Hyae Campbell
Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor Effects On The Mesolimbic Dopamine Circuitry And Adaptations With Chronic Ethanol Exposure, Rachel Ji-Hyae Campbell
Theses and Dissertations
The mesolimbic dopamine (DA) system contributes to reward and reinforcement learning for ethanol (EtOH). The nucleus accumbens (NAc) receives DA input from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) encoding rewarding information. Acute EtOH increases NAc DA levels, and this DA response is attenuated with chronic EtOH exposure. Furthermore, chronic EtOH results in reduced DA release, increased DA clearance and presynaptic D2-type auto-receptor sensitization. Further research into EtOH-induced neural adaptations that modulate NAc DA release is explored herein, including changes in cholinergic interneurons (CIN), which are known regulators of DA transmission. One potential class of regulators are immune related cytokines, that can …

Prenatal Maternal Mood Instability And Child Externalizing Problems: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study, Sophie G. Srivastava, Curt A. Sandman, Elysia Poggi Davis, Laura M. Glynn
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
This study examines whether exposure to affect fluctuations during fetal development have implications for child psychopathology. To evaluate maternal mood instability, participants (N = 154) completed Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) eight times per day across three days at 15-, 25-, and 35-weeks' gestation, and then at two months postpartum. The EMA measured depressive symptoms (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale), anxiety (Profile of Mood States), and stress (Perceived Stress Scale). Mood instability was quantified by calculating root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), which captures both variability and temporal dependency of mood states. When the children were 3 years …

While past research has predominantly focused on the role of myoglobin in meat color, investigations into the contributions of hemoglobin and cytochrome c are limited. Cytochrome c has the highest redox stability (P < 0.05), followed by myoglobin and hemoglobin. Electrochemistry analysis revealed that cytochrome c has a greater capacity (P < 0.05) to reduce than myoglobin and hemoglobin. Differential scanning calorimetry indicates that cytochrome c was most stable to heat (P < 0.05), while no differences were noted between myoglobin and hemoglobin. Structural analysis noted that greater heat and redox stability of cytochrome c might be attributed to fewer histidine residues (3) and more covalent bonds (4) than myoglobin (13), hemoglobin α (10), and hemoglobin β (6). This study suggests that the amino acid sequence and number of covalent bonds can impact the redox stability and heat-induced denaturation properties of myoglobin, hemoglobin, and cytochrome c.

Pulmonary capillary endothelial cells (ECs) consist of two populations, CAP1 and CAP2; how each population reacts to diverse tissue injury is incompletely understood. Using single-cell multiome and mouse genetics, we characterize the induction and function of a truncated isoform of Ntrk2, Ntrk2-T1, in multiple lung injury models. Upon Sendai parainfluenza infection, Ntrk2-T1 is broadly induced in CAP1s after the initial interferon response, associated with increased intronic chromatin accessibility, and persists for weeks. Ntrk2-T1 ECs arise from CAP1s but not CAP2s-traced by

Diabetics are twice as likely to experience high blood pressure as non-diabetics. Asprosin a protein hormone has 140 amino-acids, is secreted by white adipose-tissue in response to fasting. When the cAMP, protein kinase-A pathway is activated, it causes a fasting-induced increase in hepatic glucose release into the bloodstream. Irisin, a peptide consisting of 112 amino-acids, is produced by cleaving a protein in the plasma membrane to release an adipocytokine. Enhanced lipid and glucose metabolism, along with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, are among the advantageous impacts of irisin. The purpose of this study is to determine the function of Asprosin and …

The transportation sector plays a vital role in facilitating human well-being by moving people and goods. In Iraq, the sector faces significant challenges, including an annual fuel loss of up to 500 billion dinars and substantial fuel wastage. Each vehicle consumes approximately 570 liters of gasoline annually due to traffic congestion, as the number of vehicles at peak times is estimated per kilometer of the three-lane street (1,059 cars km/h). In contrast, their number is estimated at regular times (450 cars km/h), leading to increased greenhouse gas emissions from fuel combustion used to operate vehicle engines. The current study analyzed …

Experimental Formula Of Single Particle Level Density In Pre-Equilibrium Reaction, Sarah Shakir Ali, Ali Dawoud Salloum
Baghdad Science Journal
In this study, a new formula for single particle level density was found from experimental values of single particle level density using the curve fitting. This new formula was substituted in Ericson's formula which is used to calculate the partial level density in pre-equilibrium nuclear reactions and in the corrected formulas of William's formula, spin corrected formula and surface formula. The results for each formula were compared with the results for the same formula using single particle level density from the equidistant spacing model ESM. It was noticed that there is good agreement between the results of single particle level …

The utilization of Trichoderma harzianum (Hypocreales: Hypocreaceae) as a biological control agent against plant pathogenic fungi has gained extensive recognition in the field of agriculture. Fusarium solani (Hypocreales: Nectriaceae) is a pathogen that causes damping-off in corn plants and poses a significant global challenge to corn farmers. This study aimed to investigate the potential management of damping-off disease caused by F. solani in three varieties of corn, utilizing T. harzianum in conjunction with the semi in-planta method. It was demonstrated that both in vitro and semi in-planta T. harzianum treatments had the ability to suppress damping-off disease in corn varieties. …

Evaluating Counseling Skills Through Language Style Matching: A Computer-Aided Text Analysis Of Suicide And General Counseling Transcripts, Chung-Fan Ni, Justin Jacques, Charles Silber, Cass Dykeman
Journal of Technology in Counselor Education and Supervision
This pilot study applies Computer-Aided Text Analysis (CATA) to examine Language Style Matching (LSM) in counseling transcripts, offering a novel metric for counselor education and supervision. Analyzing 50 suicide-focused and 100 general counseling sessions using LIWC-22 software, we found high LSM scores in both contexts (suicide-focused: M = 0.906; general: M = 0.903). Bayesian analysis provided moderate evidence (BF01 = 5.048) in support of the null hypothesis, indicating no significant difference between the two session types. The consistently high LSM suggests counselors effectively build strong alliances and align with client goals across topics. LSM analysis provides an objective measure of …
