Mystical Epistemologies: Understanding Divine Love Through Ibn 'Arabi And Thomas Aquinas, Janai Wright Aug 2025

Mystical Epistemologies: Understanding Divine Love Through Ibn 'Arabi And Thomas Aquinas, Janai Wright

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper explores the epistemological role of love in the mystical frameworks of Muhyiddin Ibn ‘Arabi and Thomas Aquinas, two significant figures of medieval philosophy and theology. Though rooted in distinct monotheistic traditions—Islamic mysticism and Christian scholasticism—both thinkers share a foundation in Aristotelian thought, from which they derive skepticism regarding the intellect's capacity to fully comprehend or relate to the divine. Instead, they elevate love as the essential means to attaining knowledge of God. By comparing Ibn ‘Arabi’s concept of the heart with Aquinas’ notion of the will, the paper elucidates how each philosopher positions love as transcending the limitations …

Dyadic And Multiparty Turn-Taking In Two Deaf Preschool Classrooms, Savannah Tellander Aug 2025

Dyadic And Multiparty Turn-Taking In Two Deaf Preschool Classrooms, Savannah Tellander

Theses

Conversational turn-taking skills are needed to succeed in most conversational interactions. Timing of turn-taking is crucial for young deaf signers, who need early, accessible, and consistent input in a signed and/or spoken language. For deaf children who acquire a language in either modality, they must acquire appropriate turn-taking skills. Without these abilities, children may miss critical language input, and in a cascading effect–they may miss opportunities both for input (and thus new knowledge) and expressive language. In addition to documenting deaf children’s turn-taking skills across development, it is important to also document timing data for further understanding of cognitive language …

Data Registration Techniques For Optical Functional Brain Mapping, Abigail Magee Aug 2025

Data Registration Techniques For Optical Functional Brain Mapping, Abigail Magee

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Optical functional brain mapping presents a versatile, portable, and cost-effective alternative to conventional functional imaging techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). However, optical imaging does not inherently capture anatomical details and relies on existing structural imaging to generate accurate brain maps. By employing head models that incorporate participant-specific anatomy, imaging array placement, and the optical properties of underlying tissues, optical functional brain mapping can achieve results comparable to those of fMRI. Despite advances in registration techniques, the creation of atlas-derived yet participant-specific head models remains a significant challenge. My research endeavors to develop innovative registration and analysis pipelines …

Optimization Of Light Spectrum During The Early Grow-Out Of Caribbean Corals, Liam A. Abrams Aug 2025

Optimization Of Light Spectrum During The Early Grow-Out Of Caribbean Corals, Liam A. Abrams

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

For at least half a century, numerous direct and indirect anthropogenic stressors have led to the decline of coral populations globally. To minimize this decline and preserve genetic diversity, land-based nurseries have been sexually propagating corals to repopulate reefs. While the techniques to induce corals to spawn and rear their larvae are relatively well-established, the grow-out, i.e. rearing from newly settled to a size suitable for outplanting, remains yet to be fully optimized. Specifically, light spectrum, food quantity and quality and algal control require optimization. This study investigated the post-settlement survival and growth of the Caribbean reef building corals Colpophyllia …

Alternative To The Statistical Mass Confusion Of Testing For "No Effect", Josh L Morgan Aug 2025

Alternative To The Statistical Mass Confusion Of Testing For "No Effect", Josh L Morgan

2020-Current year OA Pubs

In cell biology, statistical analysis means testing the hypothesis that there was no effect. This weak form of hypothesis testing neglects effect size, is universally misinterpreted, and is disastrously prone to error when combined with high-throughput cell biology. The solution is for analysis of measurements to start and end with an interpretation of effect size. In this manuscript, I walk through some of the common critiques of significance testing and how they relate to experimental cell biology. I argue that careful consideration of effect size should be returned to its central position in the planning and discussion of cell biological …

An Ethanol-Induced Loss Of The Lipid Droplet-Associated Segregase Vcp/P97 Leads To Hepatic Steatosis, Sandhya Sen, Shaun Weller, Ryan J Schulze, Donglin Ding, Carol A Casey, Conrad Weihl, Mark A Mcniven Aug 2025

An Ethanol-Induced Loss Of The Lipid Droplet-Associated Segregase Vcp/P97 Leads To Hepatic Steatosis, Sandhya Sen, Shaun Weller, Ryan J Schulze, Donglin Ding, Carol A Casey, Conrad Weihl, Mark A Mcniven

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The liver stores substantial numbers of neutral lipid organelles termed lipid droplets (LDs) that accumulate within hepatocytes in response to chronic ethanol (EtOH) consumption leading to hepatic steatosis. Mass spectrometry analysis of LDs isolated from EtOH-damaged rat livers revealed a substantial reduction in the valosin-containing protein ATPase (VCP/p97) that acts to remove targeted proteins from cellular membranes for degradation. Experimental disruption of VCP function resulted in an increase in LD content in hepatocytes and mouse livers along with a marked increase in LD-associated hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSD17β13) known to contribute to hepatic steatosis. Surprisingly, treatment of hepatocytes with the proteasome inhibitor …

iLEARN Teaching Resources

In this culturally responsive science lesson, students explore the ecological and historical importance of buffalo through story and hands-on learning. Using Paul Goble’s Return of the Buffaloes, learners’ journey into Lakota legend to discover how buffalo sustained communities and symbolized connection to land and spirit. Through guided reading, students uncover how buffalo supported Indigenous survival—providing food, shelter, clothing, and tools—while developing an appreciation for traditional knowledge systems and biodiversity. Students then deepen their understanding of food science by making buffalo jerky, connecting past and present preservation methods. As they mix ingredients, shape meat into strips, and observe dehydration techniques, students …

Opposing Roles For Iron Transport Systems In Gallium Tolerance In Extraintestinal Pathogenic Escherichia Coli, Nagama Parveen Aug 2025

Opposing Roles For Iron Transport Systems In Gallium Tolerance In Extraintestinal Pathogenic Escherichia Coli, Nagama Parveen

Theses and Dissertations

Iron is required for bacterial growth because it serves as a co-factor for enzymes involved in DNA synthesis, cellular respiration, and other processes. Disrupting bacterial iron homeostasis is an effective strategy to prevent the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and gallium (Ga³⁺) has emerged as a promising candidate due to its ability to displace iron (Fe³⁺) and prevent essential iron-dependent pathways. However, Escherichia coli are naturally less sensitive to gallium than many other bacteria, and the mechanisms that control gallium tolerance are not completely understood. To address this, we performed a genome-wide transposon sequencing (TnSeq) screen to identify genes important for …

Case Report: Sarcina Ventriculi, A Masquerade Of Motility, Katherine Westbrook Cates, Catherine Hudson

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Sarcina ventriculi is a rare bacterium that has the potential to cause severe disease in the gastric mucosa. According to our search, there are less than 100 prior published case reports. This case discusses a 69-year-old man who presented to the hospital with severe gastric distention noted on CT of the abdomen with intractable nausea and emesis, for which endoscopy was performed and ruled out gastric outlet obstruction, with biopsies resulting as S. ventriculi. This bacterium has previously been reported to cause gastric dysmotility, as well as severe side effects including gastric perforation.

Exploring Hepatic Stellate Cell-Driven Fibrosis: Therapeutic Advances And Future Perspectives, Alka Singh, Ansab Akhtar, Prashant Shukla

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Liver fibrosis, a progressive liver disease arising from viral or metabolic causes, poses a major global health challenge due to its potential progression to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Due to the complex aetiology and epidemiology of liver fibrosis, most therapies fail in the clinic, and very few drugs have been approved by the US FDA. APPROACH: This review highlights the pathophysiological features of liver fibrosis, with a focus on novel targets in hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), key players in the fibrogenesis process, to develop successful therapeutic approaches using both pharmacological agents and active targeting strategies. The review …
