Cities and the Environment (CATE)
There is a need to rethink the sustainability and resilience of cities, where there is often limited availability and access to urban green spaces (UGS). Urban rewilding is an opportune avenue to connect humans to nature. Thus, the aim of this study was to understand the potential for urban re-naturing through home and health clinic gardens (HCGs). This was done through vegetation surveys in the naga (natural area) micro-gardens of 16 HCGs and household surveys with 80 households with home gardens (HGs) in two districts of the North-West province, South Africa. The size of the naga across HCGs ranged from …

Faculty Research 2025
Vitamin D insufficiency (VDI) is primarily determined by serum levels of calcidiol, which serves as a biomarker for the less abundant but most potent bioactive metabolite, calcitriol. However, population studies often show discordance between calcidiol and calcitriol. Here, a genetically diverse population of 7 inbred mouse strains was used to investigate the role of interindividual genetic differences in driving calcidiol-to-calcitriol discordance under vitamin D sufficient (VDS) vs depleted (VDD) conditions. We found high interstrain variability in calcitriol that was discordant with calcidiol under VDS and VDD conditions. However, under VDS conditions, stratification by calcitriol level revealed that strains with serum …

African Swine Fever In Indonesia: Insights From Southeast Asia’S Policy Response Through The One Health Approach, Niken Salindri, Wachyu Sulistiadi
Journal of Indonesian Health Policy and Administration
African Swine Fever (ASF) seriously threatens pig production systems, food security, and rural livelihoods across Southeast Asia. This study employs an analysis of secondary national data from Indonesia using a quantitative descriptive analysis approach, complemented by regional policy responses to ASF from 2019 to 2024. To contextualize regional findings, this study also integrates official statistics from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) covering provincial pork production trends (2021–2023), the number of ASF-affected pigs per province (2020–2024), and per capita pork consumption by district. Quantitative data show that ASF outbreaks have been disproportionately concentrated in specific provinces such as East Nusa Tenggara and North …
Analyzing The Role Of A Dual-Function Diguanylate Cyclase / Phosphodiesterase For Attachment And Motility In Agrobacterium Tumefaciens, Priya Aryal
Theses and Dissertations
Cyclic diguanylate monophosphate (c-di-GMP) is a second messenger that is responsible for attachment and motility in many prokaryotic systems and controls the signaling pathway for the motile to sessile transition in many bacteria. Many c-di-GMP-metabolizing proteins are diguanylate cyclases (DGCs), responsible for the synthesis of c-di-GMP and characterized by a c-di-GMP synthesizing domain, e.g., GGDEF domain. Other c-di-GMP-metabolizing proteins contain c-di-GMP degradative domains, e.g., EAL, characterized by phosphodiesterase activity (PDE). In Agrobacterium tumefaciens, out of 31 predicted proteins regulating the c-di-GMP level, this project focuses on the predicted dual-function DGC/PDE, DcpB. We hypothesized that DcpB plays a role in the …

Microbial dysbiosis has been linked to environmental enteropathy (EE) and alterations in nutrient absorption; however, compositional modifications following exposure to supplementary nutrients are poorly understood. Here, we report the effect of amino acid and micronutrient supplementation on the gut microbiome of adults with EE. In the AMAZE trial, adults with EE were randomized to amino acids (AA) and/or micronutrients (MM) for 16 weeks in a 2 × 2 factorial design against placebo. Endoscopy was performed before and after intervention, during which duodenal aspirates were collected as well as fecal samples. 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing was performed on both these samples, …

Dinah Between Rape And Seduction: Maarten Van Heemskerck And Renaissance Attitudes Towards Gender And Conflict, Péter Bokody
Dinah Between Rape And Seduction: Maarten Van Heemskerck And Renaissance Attitudes Towards Gender And Conflict, Péter Bokody
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Marteen van Heemskerck’s Old Testament print series about Dinah, daughter of Jacob, was engraved by Herman Jansz. Muller and published by Gerard de Jode in Antwerp in 1569. In these images Heemskerck reinterprets the Old Testament narrative from a highly misogynistic standpoint, disputing the biblical claim that Shechem raped Dinah. The paper traces the sporadic representations of the episode in print and painting and examines visual strategies that emphasize male vulnerability over the suffering the female victim. Heemskerck’s artistic choices are evaluated in the context of exegetical differences between Martin Luther and John Calvin.

A non-indigenous species (NIS) of benthic foraminifera was first identified in a core collected in 1993 in San Francisco Bay, California, USA, and subsequently identified as Trochammina hadai Uchio, 1962. Archived samples and literature reviews were used to determine that the species, which is native to Asia, arrived in San Francisco Bay between the early 1960s and 1983. Through molecular analyses of specimens, archived samples and literature reviews from 1930-1983, and site surveys of harbors and estuaries along the western North American seaboard in 1994-2024, in total more than 2500 samples, we documented the presence of T. hadai at 73 …
Coping Self-Efficacy, Acculturation, Gender, Socioeconomic Status, And Perceived Discrimination As Predictors Of Depression Among Nigerian Immigrants In The United States, Olatunde O. Osibote
Coping Self-Efficacy, Acculturation, Gender, Socioeconomic Status, And Perceived Discrimination As Predictors Of Depression Among Nigerian Immigrants In The United States, Olatunde O. Osibote
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Nigerian immigrants represent one of the fastest-growing immigrant populations in the United States. Relocating to a new country can be a major source of stress, often increasing individuals’ vulnerability to mental health challenges. While considerable research has examined predictors of depression in the general population and among certain immigrant groups, limited attention has been given to these factors in the context of Nigerian immigrants in the U.S. This study aimed to address that gap by applying Berry’s acculturation theory to investigate predictors of depression within this population. A quantitative, cross-sectional, correlational survey design was used to examine whether acculturation, socioeconomic …
Tiny Particles, Big Stakes: The Strategic Implications Of Micro‑ And Nanoplastics, James Giordano, Ashok Vaseashta
Tiny Particles, Big Stakes: The Strategic Implications Of Micro‑ And Nanoplastics, James Giordano, Ashok Vaseashta
Strategic Insights
This commentary explores how micro- and nanoplastics, tiny plastic fragments present throughout the environment, pose emerging strategic challenges beyond environmental and health concerns. While micro- and nanoplastics are now found in water, soil, plants, animals, and even human bodies, their long-term effects on ecosystems, food and water safety, and human health remain poorly understood. These particles can infiltrate critical systems, potentially affecting troop readiness, infrastructure resilience, and national food security. Nanoplastics may also serve as vectors for biological or chemical contaminants, complicating detection and mitigation. The article argues that micro- and nanoplastics should be treated as a strategic security issue, …

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Objective:
Unpredictability in early life is an understudied aspect of early life adversity that provides important signals to the child about their environment. Recent work shows the predictability of patterns of parental signals on a moment-to-moment timescale sculpts the developing brain during sensitive windows, offering a potential pathway through which early life experiences shape child development. Both experimental non-human animal models and observational human research show sex-specific links between early life exposure to unpredictable patterns of parental sensory signals and aberrant offspring development. The impact of predictability of sensory signals on physical health outcomes, such as BMI, remains unknown. Here …

Cancer treatment often fails because combinations of different therapies evoke complex resistance mechanisms that are hard to predict. We introduce REsistance through COntext DRift (RECODR): a computational pipeline that combines co-expression graph networks of single-cell RNA sequencing profiles with a graph-embedding approach to measure changes in gene co-expression context during cancer treatment. RECODR is based on the idea that gene co-expression context, rather than expression level alone, reveals important information about treatment resistance. Analysis of tumors treated in preclinical and clinical trials using RECODR unmasked resistance mechanisms -invisible to existing computational approaches- enabling the design of highly effective combination treatments …

Sagebrush, Wildfire, And Homeowners Associations: Climate Adaptation Opportunities In Summit County, Utah, Rebecca Ivans, Kendall Becker, Wesley Crump, J. Bradley Washa, Lewis Kogan, Scott Hotaling

Environmental changes and rapidly expanding suburban developments are amplifying wildfire risk in Utah, including in mixed-sagebrush habitats like those in Morgan, Summit, and Wasatch counties along the Wasatch Back. Wildfire risk to people and structures is especially high in the wildland-urban interface (WUI), where homes and buildings intermingle with undeveloped wildlands and natural vegetation that can fuel wildfire. Much of this urban expansion is occurring in the form of large, dispersed developments managed by homeowners associations (HOAs), which often dictate standards for the homes and properties within their purview. Thus, HOAs can play a critical role in supporting wildfire mitigation …

Introduction: Snakebite-related deaths are major concerns in populations worldwide that lack access to medical care. Current treatment of snakebites includes administration of polyspecific and polyvalent heterologous equine antiserum. Swift diagnosis of the species of snake responsible is essential to initiate a specific treatment.
Methods: We generated murine monoclonal and rabbit polyclonal antibodies against the venom of the 3 most common venomous snakes in southern India: the Russell viper, the saw-scaled viper, and the Indian cobra. We developed an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to distinguish the snake by analyzing the exudates from the snakebite wound.
Results: Monoclonal antibody EC3 reacts specifically with …

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a major risk factor for developing tuberculosis (TB). However, understanding the role of defective T cell responses in T2D and TB has been difficult, largely due to inconsistencies across studies. These discrepancies often stem from T cell subset classification primarily relying on cytokine expression profiles, which may not fully capture the complexity of T cell maturation, differentiation, and function in TB patients with T2D.
Objective and methods: In this pilot study, we sought to identify alterations in phenotypic and ex vivo responses of CD4 T cells to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) antigens in people with …

Electoral Lies And The Broader Problems Of Strict Scrutiny, R. George Wright
Electoral Lies And The Broader Problems Of Strict Scrutiny, R. George Wright
Florida Law Review
States often attempt to regulate political speech in the form of deliberate lies related to ballot initiatives, referenda, candidates, or their political positions. Some courts focus on the various harms of electoral lies, while others focus more on the risks of bias and partisan abuse involved in such speech regulations; the cases are in disarray.
This Article argues, however, that the most important problem underlying this case confusion is inherent in the widely utilized constitutional standard of strict scrutiny. Strict scrutiny typically requires a compelling governmental interest, "narrow tailoring," and some causal relation between the regulation and the compelling interest. …
Practicing Proportionality, William W. Berry Iii
Practicing Proportionality, William W. Berry Iii
Florida Law Review
At the heart of the Eighth Amendment's Cruel and Unusual Punishments Clause are two concepts of proportionality—absolute and relative. Absolute proportionality ("cruel") asks whether the sentence is commensurate with the state's purposes of punishment. Relative proportionality ("unusual"), by contrast, asks whether the sentence is relatively similar to the outcomes of similar cases. Absolute proportionality sets limits on punishment based on the relationship between the punishment and the intended punitive goal; relative proportionality sets limits on punishment based on the sentencing outcomes in similar cases.
In recent years, the United States Supreme Court has used the concept of absolute proportionality to …
Staying Alive: Negotiating Life With The Contamination Of Kitchener Drain., Zein Hassib
Staying Alive: Negotiating Life With The Contamination Of Kitchener Drain., Zein Hassib
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores how rural communities in Kafr El Sheikh governorate, Egypt, negotiate everyday life with the contamination of Kitchener Drain, the largest agricultural drain in the central Nile Delta. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in three villages at the tail-end end of the drain, the study explores how water contamination shapes social and ecological, social life for farmers living in the catchment of the drain. The thesis situates the farmer’s present experience within the broader history of colonial and modernist national irrigation reforms and developments highlighting how systemic neglect and uneven governance reproduce conditions of vulnerability. At the same time, …

Encountering The Sublime: Early Hermit Lifeways, Visual-Spatial Worlds, And The Global Recluse, James Brown
The Ozark Historical Review
This paper will assess the degree to which reclusion in the early period can be labeled a global phenomenon and will examine three key areas, the institutional ambits of reclusion, the visual-spatial world of the eremite, and the enduring cultural canon associated with eremitisms across both geographical and temporal distances. In addition, the author will perform an epistemological and phenomenological exercise in deriving humanistic insight from the experiences of recluses, as gleaned through deep consideration of their environments and cultural products.
