Scalable Biosynthesis And Recovery Of Poly-3-Hydroxybutyrate Produced From Cotton-Derived Glucose By Cupriavidus Necator, Ashley M. Clark, Lucia E. Gargano, Gabriella M. Fioravanti, Hannah M. Schapiro, Ron G. Kander

School of Design and Engineering Papers

To combat the growing issue of petroleum plastic waste, alternative bio-based polymers are being developed. Many of these biopolymers are made from bio-derived materials, or are biodegradable, but the most promising polymers fall in both categories. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are one such class of polymers, and poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (P3HB), the most popular PHA, has shown great potential. This study utilized two types of cotton-derived glucose, alongside commercial glucose, as a feedstock for the biosynthesis of P3HB by Cupriavidus necator (also known as Ralstonia eutropha). The fermentation took place in a 2-L bioreactor, showing potential for scale-up. A single-solvent extraction method was …

The Adjacent Possible, Marcus O’Donnell Prof

Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai

My hybrid traditional-digital prints explore pattern, chaos and complexity at the intersection of bodies, sexuality, and landscape. The ‘Strange appearance’ series overprints photogravure key plates, (developed through layering several original images of urban gardens) onto multiple colour pigment prints of close focus details of flowers or foliage. This process creates micro landscapes and variants which change in colour and form as layers intersect. This exhibition uses three different key plates over a repeated sequence of the same twenty colour underprints. These different approaches to variation, multiplicity and adjacency speak to both possibility and mutation: the open and the determined aspects …

Antibiotic Treatment Limits Survival Of Peripheral And Bone Marrow B-Cell Populations, Lila S Sanning, Forrest C Walker, Arushana A Maknojia, Leran Wang, Haina Jin, Gowri Kalugotla, Crystal Lovato, Katherine Y King, Megan T Baldridge

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Prolonged or broad-spectrum antibiotic courses are associated with intestinal dysbiosis and cytopenias, and depletion of hematopoietic progenitor populations after antibiotics is associated with loss of peripheral immune cells, leading to increased susceptibility to systemic infections. We evaluated the bone marrow hematopoietic compartment in a murine model of antibiotic exposure. Single-cell RNA sequencing revealed a substantial and previously unrecognized depletion of bone marrow B cells at all stages of development in antibiotic-treated mice, further confirmed by flow cytometric analysis. Depletion of the microbiota was associated with rapid changes in the peripheral B-cell compartment, yet fecal microbiota transfer did not rescue either …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Nongenetic transcription evolution has been increasingly explored and recognized to drive tumor cell progression and therapeutic resistance. As the regulation hub of transcription machinery, cyclin-dependent kinase 9 (CDK9) is the gatekeeper of RNA polymerase II transcription, and CDK9 dysfunction results in transcriptomic reprogramming and tumor cell progression. We recently reported that the heat shock protein 90 (HSP90)-MYC-CDK9 network drives therapeutic resistance in mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) through transcriptomic reprogramming. We also showed that targeting CDK9 by AZD4573 and enitociclib is a safe and effective treatment in preclinical Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) models, supporting CDK9 as a valid therapeutic target for …

The Cardioprotective Effects Of Adiponectin In Diabetes., Tara Kazemi, Yuanjie Mao, Tina Zhang

Ambulatory and Primary Care Articles

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Adiponectin, a hormone secreted by adipocytes, plays a crucial role in maintaining metabolic balance and supporting cardiovascular health. Although it is known for its protective effects, such as improving insulin sensitivity, reducing inflammation, and maintaining endothelial function, there are paradoxical associations between high adiponectin levels and increased cardiovascular mortality-referred to as the "adiponectin paradox"-which complicates its clinical interpretation. This review explores the cardioprotective effects of adiponectin in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, focusing on its potential to regulate glucose metabolism and prevent cardiovascular complications.

RECENT FINDINGS: By reviewing key studies, the article evaluates adiponectin's diverse …

We report that in humans, mice, fruit flies, and worms, the ribosomal RNAs and the transcribed spacers of 45S are densely packed with organism-specific sequence motifs that are primarily shared with nervous system genes. The human ribosomal RNAs and 45S spacers contain 1,723 such motifs. Specific combinations of these motifs are predominantly found in 3,430 human nervous system genes, of which 1,046 are genes associated with brain disorders, including autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia. The sequences of the 1,723 motifs and their locations in the introns and exons of nervous system genes are unique to primates. Experimental evidence indicates that …
