Animal Production Of Fattening Young Steers And Beef Cows By Precursor- Follower System On Two Pasture Types, Y Takimoto, K Nishimura, H Takeda, E Tsuneishi, T Suyama, T Mitamura, S Murasato
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Animal productions were compared on two pastures, i.e. PW pasture (perennial ryegrass-white clover dominant pasture) and PO pasture (perennial ryegrass-orchardgrass dominant pasture), through precursor-follower system using feeder steers and beef cows. The experiment was carried out in 1983 and 1984. After close of grazing feeder steers were fattened for 6 or 7 months, then the carcass characteristics were examined. Feeder steers used in the experiment 1983 were born in spring and grazed for 2 seasons. And in the experiment 1984 steers were born in spring and in fall. They grazed for 2 seasons and 1 season, respectivery. By the precursor-follower …

Relations Between Nitrogen Fertilization, Herbage Production And Milk Yield, E A. Lantinga, L T'Mannetje, H Schlepers
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The response to N-fertilizer of animal output and of herbage production was compared. There appeared to be no difference in the responses to applied nitrogen between intensive continuous grazing and weekly cutting in the range of 300 to 500 kg N/ha/yr. It is hypothesized that the response to applied nitrogen in a continuously grazed sward is mainly determined by the intensity of grazing and that the benefit from nitrogen circulation through excreta has little meaning for the pasture as a whole.
Modelling Grazing Intensity Studies, David I. Bransby
Modelling Grazing Intensity Studies, David I. Bransby
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Grazing intensity models have traditionally related animal production per head and per ha to stocking rate. The value of such models is limited by the omission of pasture information. In this paper the relationships between average daily gain, grazing days and standing herbage are used to develop models relating animal production per ha to standing herbage. These models can also be extended by relating changes in their parameters to additional quantifiable variables, or by using them in economic models to express profit per ha in terms of standing herbage.
Grazing As A Part Of Agroforestry, Harold F. Heady
Grazing As A Part Of Agroforestry, Harold F. Heady
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Multiple use of land by the small landholder for food crops, trees and animals, often called agroforestry, holds great promise for aiding people near poverty in developing countries, but new forages and techniques of management must be developed.
An Interdisciplinary Approach For Increasing Yield And Improving Quality Of Forages, J R. Wilson
An Interdisciplinary Approach For Increasing Yield And Improving Quality Of Forages, J R. Wilson
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The contribution of some basic plant disciplines, principally physiology and histology, to the improvement of pasture yield and quality is discussed. Studies of temperate pasture grasses have identified several sources of loss of potential yield and have provided selection criteria for increasing yield. Integration of this physiological research with studies of forage consumption on the same pastures is proving a valuable inter- disciplinary approach to defining management options for maximising pasture and/or animal productivity. In tropical grasses, research towards increasing total dry matter yield is perhaps unwarranted but there is need for more co-operative studies involving plant and animal scientists …

Clinical Course And Treatment Outcomes In Solid-Basaloid Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Of The Breast: A Systematic Review And Case Report, Stephanie Kim, Kyle Sheth, Xiaoying Yu, Laura Porterfield, Elizabeth M Vaughan
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Background: Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (ACC) is a rare, indolent subtype of triple-negative breast cancer, accounting for < 0.1 % of cases. The solid-basaloid subtype (SBACC), comprising approximately one-quarter of breast ACCs, has a poorer prognosis. While ACC is typically managed with surgery and is chemo-resistant, SBACC is more aggressive and often treated with chemotherapy and, more recently, immunotherapy-though supporting evidence remains limited.
Aim: To assess clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of SBACC of the breast.
Methods: This study presents a case of breast SBACC and a systematic review of five databases (inception-September 10, 2024). Eligible studies reported clinical course, treatment, and outcomes. Exclusions included duplicates, non-SBACC focus, animal studies, and those lacking clinical or with only pathological data. Descriptive statistics were used for binary and categorical variables. Risk of bias was assessed using JBI tools, following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The review is registered in PROSPERO.

When Creative Practice Becomes Research, James Kelly
When Creative Practice Becomes Research, James Kelly
Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai
This seminar examines approaches to practice and research within an academic context, with particular reference to the academic scholarship framework at SAE University College. It introduces distinctions between creative practice and research, demonstrating how disciplinary practice may be transformed into recognised scholarly output when it is contextualised within a theoretical framework, critically reflective, and disseminated for peer engagement.
Drawing on methodologies by Candy (2006), Skains (2018), and Barrett (2019), the presentation outlines methodological models for Practice-as-Research (PaR), Practice-Based Research (PBR), Practice-Led Research, Research-Led Practice, and hybrid approaches. It highlights the iterative and open-ended character of creative research processes, in which …

Bandung And The Future Of Africa’S Pasts, Rabiat Akande, Olufemi Elias
Articles & Book Chapters
The idea of decolonization that animated the spirit of the 1955 Bandung Conference continues to power imaginations of an alternative to the world Bandung inhabited. In this essay, we look upon Africa from Bandung, and simultaneously from Africa to Bandung, to recover an “otherwise”—a seeing of the future from Africa’s pasts. In the future envisioned in Bandung and beyond, flag independence was regarded as the first stop in the project of decolonization.1 The conference was to provide both “guidance to mankind … [on] the way which it must take to attain safety and peace” and “evidence that Asia and Africa …
Examining Children’S Intuitive Understanding Of Mechanical Systems With A Gears Assembly Task, Nicole Taboada
Examining Children’S Intuitive Understanding Of Mechanical Systems With A Gears Assembly Task, Nicole Taboada
Theses
Children’s causal reasoning about machines and their components is crucial for acquiring knowledge about science and math. Mechanistic understanding involves knowing how parts can be effectively connected to work together as a functional mechanical system. Little is known about how children’s understanding of mechanical systems develops across the lifespan. Legare and Lombrozo (2014) developed a gears assembly task to assess children’s understanding and learning of mechanics but did not track this skill across ages. The present study adapted the gears assembly task to measure mechanistic understanding in children between the ages of 4 to 11 years and adults. The goal …

Decarbonization Is Happening In U.S. Higher Education, But Carbon Neutrality Goals Alone Are Not Delivering It, Alexander R. Barron, Nubraz F. Khan, Greta Anesko, Emma S. Larsen, Junwen Ding, Shey P. Sanges, Aaron L. Strong
Environmental Science and Policy: Faculty Publications
Carbon neutrality emerged as an overall framework for climate action several decades ago, with the assumption that institutions would follow a carbon management hierarchy - reducing their own emissions (i.e. decarbonization) and relying on high-quality offsets to address any residual emissions. In practice, offsets and other accounting-based emissions reductions have often dominated both discussion and action. However, sector-wide studies examining the balance between decarbonization and offsetting have been limited. Here, we examine 23 U.S. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) that have declared carbon neutrality and contrast their direct (Scope 1) greenhouse gas emissions reduction efforts with a broader universe of U.S. …

The field of single-cell biology is growing rapidly, generating large amounts of data from a variety of species, disease conditions, tissues, and organs. Coordinated efforts such as CZI CELLxGENE, HuBMAP, Broad Institute Single Cell Portal, and DISCO allow researchers to access large volumes of curated datasets, including more than just scRNA-seq data. These resources have created an opportunity to build and expand the computational biology ecosystem to develop tools necessary for data reuse and for extracting novel biological insights. We highlight achievements made so far, areas where further development is needed, and specific challenges that need to be overcome.

Tank bromeliads are found in rainforests across the Neotropics and harbour diverse invertebrate communities between their leaf axes. Various factors influence the invertebrate species richness and differences in composition in bromeliad phytotelmata, most notably, habitat size. However, there has been little work on invertebrate communities in bromeliads in western Amazonia or at different heights in the canopy. We collected 63 epiphytic bromeliads (Aechmea hoppii (Harms) L.B.Sm, A. nidularioides L.B.Sm) on the eastern edge of the Tropical Andes Biodiversity Hotspot in Ecuador and explored which biological and physical variables explained the differences in invertebrate composition among bromeliads. We extracted a total …

The Big Bang Theory’S Blurred (Tele)Vision Of Scientific Ethics: Some Thoughts For Educators Who Want To Change The Channel, Lee-Anne Broadhead, Sean J. Howard
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
This article investigates the way the popular American television program The Big Bang Theory represents the pursuit of scientific knowledge and reflects on the cultural and educational implications of the show’s contradictory problematization and valorization of the reductionist method at the core of modern Eurocentric science. Drawing on story-lines relating to military research, animal experimentation, and pharmaceutical drug trials, we consider the show’s precarious balance of implicit critique (the consistent exposé of systematically violent, often unethical research) and overt celebration (the presentation of science as “cool,” and its practitioners as flawed but endearing). This tension, we argue, enhances the show’s …

On The Road To A Better Life? Rural Road And Economic Development In Albania, Santosh Gautam, Ermal Llirjani, Patralekha Ukil
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This study evaluates the impact of investment in rural roads on household welfare in Albania using a difference-in-differences method. We find that treated households experienced a 35-percentage point increase in the road quality and reduced travel times to the nearest motorable roads. Land and housing values rose significantly, and household heads were less likely to be unemployed, with a shift toward self-employment. While household income did not change significantly, consumption—particularly on non-food items—increased. These findings highlight the welfare-enhancing effects of improved connectivity and suggest that rural infrastructure investments can promote local economic activity. Policymakers should consider pairing road upgrades with …

The Wood Turtle (Glyptemys insculpta) is an endangered species in the state of Iowa and a species of conservation concern across their entire range. The Iowa population is characterized by high levels of adult and egg predation, displays little or no annual recruitment, and harbors an extremely low number of juveniles (7.3%). Home range and habitat usage studies of hatchling and juvenile Wood Turtles are limited to a few studies, and only one study of juveniles exists from the state of Iowa. Over a 10 yr period, we conducted a radiotelemetry study in Iowa on seven juvenile wood turtles for …

INTRODUCTION: The identification of unknown metabolites remains a major challenge in untargeted metabolomics using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). This process typically depends on comparing mass spectral or chromatographic data to reference databases or deciphering complex fragmentation in tandem mass spectra. While current machine learning methods can predict metabolite structures using MS/MS (MS2) data, no approaches, to our knowledge, use only mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) and retention time (RT) from LC-MS data.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the potential of using the mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) and retention time (RT) from LC-MS data as standalone predictors for metabolite classification and propose a modeling framework which …

Although total knee replacements have an insignificant impact on patients’ mobility and quality of life, real-time performance monitoring remains a challenge. Monitoring the load over time can improve surgery outcomes and early detection of mechanical imbalances. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) present a promising approach as a self-powered sensor for load monitoring in TKR. A TENG was fabricated with dielectric layers consisting of Kapton tape and 3D-printed thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) matrix incorporating CNT and BTO fillers, separated by an air gap and sandwiched between two copper electrodes. The sensor performance was optimized by varying the concentrations of BTO and CNT to study …

Beyond: Undergraduate Research Journal
This study investigated the effects of a decomposing pig carcass on soil pH in the tallgrass prairie ecosystem of Southeast Nebraska, using pigs as proxies for human decomposition. The experiment spanned 171 days, encompassing decomposition stages from fresh to advanced decay. Soil samples were collected at regular intervals from four cardinal directions (north, east, south, west) and distances (0, 33, 66, and 100 cm) from the carcass to analyze changes in pH over time. Results indicated that decomposition significantly influenced soil pH, with the most dramatic changes occurring on the south side of the carcass, where the pig burst. pH …

Elaeagnus pungens Thunb is a significant source of flavonoids with biological function. This study aims to develop orthogonal tests and alkali alcohol extraction methods for extracting flavonoids from leaves of E. pungens. The levels of factors in the orthogonal test were determined by pre-experiment, and the physiological efficacy was verified by the in vivo test. The results indicated that the optimal extraction yield was 4.07% when the solid-to-liquid ratio was 1:40, the concentration of ethanol was 60%, the extraction temperature was 80℃, and the extraction time was five h. The alkalialcohol extraction results demonstrated that the extraction yield of …
