Pesticides, Pollinators, And Producers: The Epa’S New Herbicide And Insecticide Strategies And Illinois Farmers, Jonathan Jerkatis
Pesticides, Pollinators, And Producers: The Epa’S New Herbicide And Insecticide Strategies And Illinois Farmers, Jonathan Jerkatis
Northern Illinois University Law Review
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has introduced new herbicide and insecticide strategies to comply with the Endangered Species Act (ESA), a move that will have significant implications for Illinois farmers and endangered species. Illinois, a leading producer of corn and soybeans, relies heavily on pesticides. Unfortunately, these chemicals have been identified as a key driver of monarch and other endangered species population decline. This note examines how the EPA’s new strategies aim to balance species protection with agricultural viability, addressing concerns over financial burdens of compliance, the complexity of the strategies, and a lack of enforcement provisions. While Illinois farmers …

From Prohibition To Preparation: Reframing Academic Integrity In The Age Of Ai, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
This study analyzes how U.S. universities reconfigure academic integrity during the 2024–2025 cycle in response to widespread generative AI adoption. The analysis foregrounds three loci: student ignorance and metacognitive blind spots; the expanded remit of Academic Integrity Officers prioritizing education over punishment; and deliberate AI-enabled misconduct that exposes the evidentiary limits of detection technologies. A mixed-methods design integrates a multi-site review at Arizona State University, Montclair State University, and Cornell University with synthesis of surveys, policies, and faculty development guidance. Findings show that detector outputs function as conversational prompts rather than adjudicative proof, necessitating dialogic resolution standards, process evidence, and …

The chronic inflammation observed during type 2 diabetes (T2D) is associated with spinal pathologies, including intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration and chronic spine pain. Despite confounding factors, such as obesity, studies show that, after adjusting for age, body mass index and genetics (e.g. twins), patients with T2D experience disproportionate severity of IVD degeneration and/or back pain than individuals without T2D. We hypothesized that chronic T2D fosters a proinflammatory microenvironment within the IVD that promotes degeneration and disrupts homeostasis. To test this, we evaluated two common mouse models of T2D - leptin-receptor deficient (db/db) mice and mice with a chronic high-fat diet …

In United States v. Skrmetti, the Supreme Court upheld Tennessee Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), a state law that prohibits transgender minors from accessing gender-affirming care. For the first time, the Court considered a fundamental question in civil rights law: How does the Fourteenth Amendment regard transgender people? The Court gave little guidance. It did not sort out principles for deciding when anti-transgender discrimination classifies by sex, nor whether transgender people are a suspect class. Instead, the Court held that “[i]n the medical context, the mere use of sex-based language does not sweep a statute within the reach of …

Virtual friends and lovers powered by artificial intelligence are rapidly moving to the center of our emotional and social lives. Millions of people turn to AI companions every day for conversation, romance, sexual intimacy, therapy, and education. AI companionship holds promise, potentially reducing loneliness, supporting people without access to mental health treatment, helping students learn, and offering a judgment-free space for sensitive conversations. But AI companionship also raises significant concerns. The technology's addictiveness may exacerbate loneliness and can undermine human relationships. Therapy bots may prove more harmful than helpful. AI companions can be emotionally abusive. And their access to the …

Many studies have compared gene expression in young and old samples to gain insights on aging, the primary risk factor for most chronic diseases. However, these studies only identify associations without distinguishing drivers of aging from compensatory geroprotective responses or incidental downstream effects. Here, we introduce a workflow to characterize causal effects of differentially expressed genes on lifespan. First, we performed a meta-analysis of 25 gene expression datasets comprising samples of various tissues from healthy, untreated adult mammals (humans, dogs, and rodents) at two distinct ages. Genes were ranked by the number of datasets in which they exhibited consistent differential …

The Role Of Fungal Proteases In Bioactive Peptide Production And Analytical Approaches For Tracking Their Activity, Tanvir Ahmed, Angéla Juhász, Utpal Bose, Netsane Shiferaw Terefe, Michelle L. Colgrave
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Fungal proteases catalyse site-specific peptide bond cleavage in complex protein matrices, enabling bioactive peptide (BP) release. Accurate monitoring is vital for optimising hydrolysis efficiency, minimising nonspecific proteolysis, ensuring consistent yields, and preserving peptide biofunctionality. While analytical and computational tools are well-established for non-fungal systems, their adaptation to fungal proteases remains exploratory, with no comprehensive evaluation addressing the unique challenges in this field. This review synthesises current knowledge, identifies methodological gaps, and outlines future directions for developing fungi-specific analytical pipelines and computational frameworks for BP discovery. It explores fungal protease families, their roles in intracellular peptide processing, and fungal survival strategies. …

Many K-12 schools function on limited budgets in their science departments, making it difficult to acquire, maintain, and update microscopes. While modern light microscopes are often complex, expensive, and require specialized training, they are based on simple principles of light. Microscopes enable us to observe objects too small for the naked eye and reveal intricate details. Introducing affordable, easy-to-use microscope adaptations early in education helps foster a deeper understanding of science and encourages young students to pursue STEM fields. Using 3D printing, we developed two innovative microscope models and two lesson plans. Lesson 1: Using a smartphone microscope to visualize …
Time To Pay For Nature-Based Solutions, Tamar Ron
Time To Pay For Nature-Based Solutions, Tamar Ron
New England Journal of Public Policy
Viewing nature as ‘common goods’ results in under-valuating of natural capital and assets. As a consequence, budget allocations for environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and climate action are considerably insufficient. Another result is opting for unsustainable and destructive land and resource uses, which provide immediate and tangible monetary revenues. This article emphasizes the need to valuate natural assets and nature-based solutions (NBS), and their contribution. It further explores optional solutions, including national and global policy, and legislative and taxing instruments, to translate this value into substantive tangible financing for coordinated and synergetic approaches to address the critical global climate and biodiversity …

Highlights: What are the main findings? Knockout of Plin2 in microglia reduces lipid droplet burden, while enhancing phagocytic clearance capacity. Transcriptomic, bioenergetic, and lipidomic analyses reveal that loss of Plin2 reprograms microglial metabolism toward reduced TAG storage and improved mitochondrial resilience. What are the implications of the main findings? Plin2 serves as a key regulator of microglial lipid droplet stability, metabolic flexibility, and immune function under Alzheimer’s-relevant stressors. Targeting Plin2 may represent a therapeutic strategy to alleviate lipid droplet-driven dysfunction and restore microglial performance in aging and neurodegeneration. Lipid droplets (LDs) are emerging as key regulators of metabolism and inflammation, …

Cop30: A Climate Overview, Padraig O'Malley
New England Journal of Public Policy
This overview situates the accelerating climate crisis at a pivotal historical moment, as global emissions and political inaction converge ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil. Increasing heat is driving planetary instability, with cascading impacts such as sea level rise, droughts, wildfires, disease emergence, and permafrost thaw.
Despite pledges under the Paris Agreement and subsequent Glasgow Pact, most nations are far off track: 2024 marked the hottest year in recorded history, CO₂ reached 429 ppm by mid-2025, and fossil fuel combustion continues to rise. Under the Trump administration, the United States withdrew again from the Paris Agreement, dismantled environmental agencies, and …

Modeling Social Evolution, Involution, And Indeterminacy: A Neutrosophic-Cultural Algorithm Approach, Antonios Paraskevas, Florentin Smarandache
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
Neutrosophic Sociology, or Neutrosociology, is the study of sociology using neutrosophic scientific methods for understanding the dynamics of social systems within complex environments. When a social change occurs, the society evolves with respect to some parameters, regresses with respect to others, and remains the same or experiences an unclear change (indeterminacy) with respect to another set of parameters. This mirrors neutrosophic logic: true (), neutral or indeterminate (ℐ), and false (ℱ). The main concept of cultural algorithms is a generalization of the idea that evolution has at its base both racial learning within species and social learning within human societies. …

Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications
Delayed echolalia, or the repetition of previously heard speech, is often observed in the expressive language of autistic children. Relatively little is known about how the production of delayed echolalia fits within the overall picture of autistic children’s language ability, including receptive language. To date, no empirical studies have tested autistic children’s comprehension of individual words within their delayed echoes. The present study aimed to establish proof-of-concept for a novel method of examining children’s comprehension of individual words that they produce in their own delayed echoes. Using natural language sampling combined with parent report, we identified instances of delayed echolalia …

The Relationship Of St6gal1 With Clinicopathological And Prognostic Factors In Breast Carcinomas, Ethem Ömeroğlu, Abdülhalim Serden Ay, Tuğba Günler, İlknur Küçükosmanoğlu, Sümeyye Kozacıoğlu
Saudi Medical Journal
Objectives: To investigate the association of β-galactoside α2-6 sialyltransferase 1 (ST6GAL1) expression with hormone receptor (HR), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), and other clinicopathological parameters, including histological grade, stage, lymphovascular invasion, perineural invasion, and survival in breast carcinomas (BCs). Methods: This study included 85 patients who had undergone surgery for breast cancer (BC). The associations of HR, HER2 status, and histopathologic tumor characteristics with immunohistochemical expression of ST6GAL1 were analyzed. Results: The majority (48 [56.5%]) of patients were in the T2 stage, and no association was seen between staging and ST6GAL1 ( p <0.05). Further, 44 (54.2%) patients were HR positive, and most of them exhibited high ST6GAL1 levels ( p =0.001), whereas 44 (51.8%) were HER2 negative, and most of them demonstrated low ST6GAL1 levels ( p =0.007). Ki-67 of ≥20% was observed in 55 (64.7%) and <20% in 30 (35.3%) patients. Most of those with high Ki-67 demonstrated low-grade STLGAL1 expression; however, no correlation was detected between the two values ( p =0.378). High and low ST6GAL1 expressions were observed in 39 (45.9%) and 46 (54.1%) cases, respectively. Conclusion: This research is one of the first studies to use ST6GAL1 in preoperative biopsies of patients not scheduled for neoadjuvant treatment. This study revealed highly significant associations of ST6GAL1 expression with HR, HER2, and molecular subtyping. Future studies are recommended to clarify the possible role of ST6GAL1 in resistance to HR and HER2-targeted and other chemotherapeutic agents in BCs.

A Comprehensive Discussion On Fuzzy Hypersoft Expert, Superhypersoft, And Indetermsoft Graphs, Takaaki Fujita
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
Graph theory, a branch of mathematics, studies relationships among entities through vertices and edges. To capture the inherent uncertainties in real-world networks, Uncertain Graph Theory has evolved within this field. Soft Expert Graphs combine conventional graph theory with expert assessments, using fuzzy sets for vertices and edges, while allowing expert opinions to shape the uncertainties and relationships within the graph. Hypersoft Graphs extend this concept further by incorporating multi-attribute nodes that represent multiple distinct attribute values, enabling the modeling of more complex, multi-dimensional relationships. In this paper, we define the Hypersoft Expert Graph and explore its connections to other classes …
