This qualitative study of the St. Louis Arch grounds renovation examines how this public–private partnership structure influences donor motivation, trust, and engagement. Guided by Social Exchange Theory and Resource Dependency Theory, this research explores the relational and structural dynamics of this philanthropic co-production including reciprocal donor motivations and interdependence among public, private, and nonprofit partners. Fifteen semi-structured interviews …

The Fearless Decision And The Future Of Race-Conscious Charities, Chenglin Liu Nov 2025

The Fearless Decision And The Future Of Race-Conscious Charities, Chenglin Liu

Cleveland State Law Review

Historically, courts tended to differentiate between invidious discrimination against racial minorities and benign discrimination against whites in the context of affirmative action movements. With the social movements galvanized by the conservatives and the change of composition of the Supreme Courts and lower courts, the feasibility of race-conscious measures aimed at helping minorities is substantially reduced. The conservatives’ win in Fearless, coupled with the Trump Administration’s attacks on DEI, have produced a self-censoring effect on charitable organizations. Because of these threats, race-conscious charities will have to modify their practices to become more “inclusive” or face legal challenges from conservatives.

Hydropower Dams, Deforestation, And Land Use Change: Evidence From Brazil, Chiara Falco, Valentina Raimondi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In Brazil, hydropower generates more than 60% of the national electricity supply, placing the country among the most hydropower-dependent economies worldwide. This study analyses the causal impact of dam construction on forest loss in Brazil using a new municipality-level panel dataset covering 379 dams, combined with high-resolution satellite data on forest coverage, among other variables. Applying modern staggered difference-indifferences estimators and a dynamic event study, we find that dams reduce forest cover by almost 9% percent in the municipality. No anticipatory effects are detected, but postconstruction losses increase steadily over time. Mechanism show that forest loss occurs mainly through cropland …

Effects Of Radiation Type On Charge Transport In Aged Polymers, Zachary J. Gibson, Jr Dennison, Virginie Griseri Nov 2025

Effects Of Radiation Type On Charge Transport In Aged Polymers, Zachary J. Gibson, Jr Dennison, Virginie Griseri

Journal Articles

Spacecraft charging issues are often investigated with simulated space environments and evaluated on pass–fail criteria that may yield little or no information about materials’ properties. It is far more effective to understand and mitigate spacecraft charging issues through investigations of material properties. However, material properties are dynamic in the harsh environment of space. Approximations must be made to simulate the space environment in the laboratory. This article reports on the investigation of the approximation that energy deposition causes the same aging effects in materials irrespective of the type of radiation sources. Samples of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyether-etherketone (PEEK) were irradiated …

Israel's Blockade Of Gaza Was Legal; Withholding Humanitarian Aid, Not So Much, Menachem Z. Rosensaft

Cornell Law Faculty Working Papers

Last month, the International Court of Justice rebuked Israel in an advisory opinion for blocking humanitarian aid into Gaza during the course of the Israel-Hamas war there and emphasized that starvation of civilian populations as a method of warfare is prohibited under prevailing international humanitarian law. Predictably, Israel’s UN ambassador dismissed the advisory opinion as “shameful.”

Now that the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza is in the rearview mirror, it is important to assess the legal and moral aspects and ramifications of Israel’s two-year blockade of Gaza. Specifically, the question that needs to be asked, but that does not have a …

White Supremacy And The Legitimation Of Violence Against Women: Analyzing The History And Impact Of Vawa, Ember Jahn

Et Cetera

This article confronts the mainstream feminist narrative that white women first addressed patriarchal violence en mass in the 1970s. Instead, this article traces back to Black women who advocated against lynching and sexual violence in the late 1800s as the first attempt to address systemic violence against women. They engaged in womanism, or the fight for Black people’s right to experience safety and discover a sense of wholeness. Their efforts led to the proliferation of numerous movements in the 1900s. Despite how crucial their efforts were to the formation of the feminist movement; many white feminists remained hostile and engaged …
