Guardrail Design And Placement 101, Katherine Smutzer
Civil Engineering Professional Development Seminar
Not all “guardrail” is created equal. Within the last 10 years INDOT has adopted the MASH-compliant Midwest Guardrail System (MGS). While similar to the previous standard w-beam guardrail, there are nuances that aren’t well understood by designers. The presentation would reinforce the fundamentals of guardrail as a safety barrier, explain the function of various components of a guardrail system, and review important design considerations.

Enhancing Recommendation Performance Via Stacking Ensemble And Synthetic Data Augmentation, Zahraa Yaareb Hani, Mohsin Hasan Hussein
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Recommendation systems are essential tools that primarily aim to help users navigate through a large volume of information. They simplify the decision-making process by suggesting relevant items based on users’ historical behaviour. However, their performance is often affected by common problems such as data sparsity. This work proposes a stacking-based ensemble recommendation system that integrates multiple machine learning models to enhance the model’s predictive performance. A new synthetic data augmentation technique is introduced to address the sparsity issue in the user–item rating matrix. This method uses the Naïve Bayes algorithm to predict additional ratings for each user. These are then …

Biology
To the Editor: Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD) is a rare, severe group 1 pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) subtype with poor survival (1). PAH-targeted vasodilators can cause life-threatening pulmonary edema in PVOD, underscoring the need for diagnostic tools to distinguish it from other PAH subtypes (1). In patients and mitomycin C–induced (MMC-induced) model animals, aberrant activation of integrated stress response (ISR) via protein kinase R (PKR) drives cardiovascular phenotypes of PVOD (2–4). Inhibition of the PKR-ISR axis, using either the PKR inhibitor C16 or the ISR inhibitor ISRIB, reverses PVOD phenotypes (2–4). Because GDF15 is a cytokine induced by the ISR …

Place, History, And Memory: New York City’S World’S Fairs In Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Peter Conolly-Smith
Open Educational Resources
This proposal for an intermediate-level History seminar taps into students’ memory, sense of place, and history skills by focusing on a space many of them already know: Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. From its origins as wetlands converted in the early twentieth century to a dumping ground for ashes memorialized in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and on to its later incarnation as the site of the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fairs, the park’s history and those of the two fairs—richly documented, all—provide ample material for a place-based seminar that utilizes multiple aspects of experiential learning.
While all the reading and …

Ai-Powered Prediction Of Co2 Dissolution In Seawater For Enhanced Carbon Capture Efficiency, Arthur Frot Berthelot
Ai-Powered Prediction Of Co2 Dissolution In Seawater For Enhanced Carbon Capture Efficiency, Arthur Frot Berthelot
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Climate change remains one of the most pressing global challenges, with carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions playing a crucial role in exacerbating global warming and ocean acidification. Among emerging mitigation strategies, carbon capture and storage (CCS) stands out as a promising solution. This dissertation explores a novel carbon capture approach utilizing seawater and nickel nanoparticles (NiNPs) stabilized by carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) to enhance CO2 dissolution. Unlike conventional amine-based methods, which are resource-intensive and reliant on freshwater, this approach offers a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative. To address the high cost and complexity of experimental CO2 capture studies, a predictive artificial intelligence …

Romances: A Performer's Guide To Tchaikovsky's Art Songs Through His Queer Sexuality, Nathaniel Reed Himes Mcbride
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation explores the art songs of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky through the lens of his queer sexuality by offering performers interpretive strategies that focus on themes of desire, repression, identity, intimacy, and longing. By placing these songs within both their 19th-century cultural context and contemporary queer discourse, the project shows how Tchaikovsky’s musical choices could be interpreted as code of his emotionality and experiences as a queer person. Through historical context, letters, and analyses of selected songs, performers can draw upon layered meanings in choices of phrasing, acting, and staging. Ultimately, this performer’s guide seeks to highlight Tchaikovsky’s arts songs …

Persistent maladaptive drug-context associations are a key component of relapse vulnerability and pose a major obstacle in treating opioid use disorder. Although the dorsal hippocampus (dHPC) is critical for contextual memory formation, the synaptic mechanisms by which opioids alter hippocampal circuits to sustain these associations remain unclear. We previously found that repeated context-paired morphine exposure impairs dHPC long-term potentiation (LTP) through enhanced activity of small-conductance calcium-activated potassium (SK2) channels. Here, we investigated the role of SK2 channels in morphine-context associative learning and memory by combining in vivo electrophysiology, molecular analyses, and behavioral pharmacology with the morphine-conditioned place preference (MorCPP) paradigm …

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports
A bicolor sh2 sweet corn cultivar trial was planted at the Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center (42.081985, -86.354087, Benton Harbor, Michigan). Seeds were donated by Crookham (CK), and Rupp (RP) seed companies. Two synergistic varieties were donated by Chris Difonzo from the Bt resistance project and were treated as unsprayed late-season checks against caterpillar infestation. Overall trial conditions were hot and dry, with moisture stress throughout the trial on a sandy hill. Overhead irrigation provided some relief. A new seeder was used that planted at a lower population than desired. As such, yield suffered in this trial.

Providencia rettgeri is a Gram-negative bacterium, rarely reported as a cause of diabetic wound infections. Its frequent resistance to β-lactams and carbapenems limits treatment options, especially in immunocompromised patients. We present the case of a 59-year-old unhoused male living with diabetes, peripheral artery disease, and prior bilateral transmetatarsal amputations who presented with a University of Texas 3B diabetic foot ulcer. Magnetic resonance imaging showed osteomyelitis of metatarsals 2–4, and bone biopsy grew Providencia rettgeri and Proteus mirabilis. The patient declined further surgery and was treated with 6 weeks of cefepime and metronidazole, with outpatient wound care, achieving wound closure …

Transnational Networks Of Film Repetitions In East Asia : Proliferation And Limitations, Roman Kusaiko
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
A growing number of contemporary film critics, influencers, and audiences criticize film remaking, a tested and successful Hollywood practice. The main complaints are a lack of originality, overreliance on repeated titles, and an openly commercial nature. Despite criticism, film remakes have existed for decades and are a vivid and resilient form of recycling under new cultural and geopolitical circumstances. Contemporary film remaking reflects the impacts of globalization, transnationalization, and the rapid development of new media and digitalization.
Nevertheless, there is a tendency to theorize on film remaking, often relying on the dichotomy of the source and a remake or, less …

Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitors (BTKis) and cell therapy have successfully been used to treat mantle cell lymphoma (MCL). However, therapy resistance inevitably emerges. Cancer cells can progressively develop stable resistance by traversing through a transient drug-tolerant persister (DTP) state. The mechanisms enabling DTP cells to reversibly adapt to therapies and evolve to acquire heterogeneity remain poorly understood, and characterizing DTP cells in MCL continues to pose a challenge for clinic translation. Here, using pirtobrutinib, a recently US Food and Drug Administration-approved noncovalent BTKi, we identified pirtobrutinib-tolerant persister cells exhibiting morphological variability by presenting a unique population of enlarged cells (giant …

Communication Supplementation Based On Sentiment Analysis, Mahdi Tayarani Najaran, Ruofei Du
Defensive Publications Series
Text-based communication systems often lead to misinterpretation of a message because the emotional context is lost. A recipient may infer a sender’s sentiment based solely on the text, leading to misunderstandings. This disclosure describes a method to supplement text messages (or other communications) with representations of the sender’s inferred sentiment, captured during composition. The technique involves collecting multi-modal biological information from the sender, such as facial expressions, gaze, and gestures, using sensors on the composing device. A machine learning model can analyze this data to infer the sender’s sentiment. A graphical representation, like an emoji, corresponding to the inferred sentiment …

Generative Art For Idle Displays Personalized By Media Consumption And Contextual Inputs, D Shin
Defensive Publications Series
The media display devices in an idle state can be underutilized, often showing a blank screen or generic, non-personalized content. A generative artificial intelligence framework can be used to create personalized artwork for display during periods of inactivity. The system can process a variety of inputs, including a user's media consumption history, explicit commands, and real-time environmental data. An orchestration layer can synthesize these inputs into a detailed directive for a generation layer, which may contain one or more specialized generative models. These models can then synthesize a stream of visual artwork based on the directive. This approach allows a …
