Converging evidence from structural imaging studies in patients, the function of dystonia-causing genes, and the comorbidity of neuronal and behavioral defects all suggest that pediatric-onset dystonia is a neurodevelopmental disorder. However, to fully appreciate the contribution of altered development to dystonia, a mechanistic understanding of how networks become dysfunctional is required for early-onset dystonia. One current hurdle is that many dystonia animal models are ideally suited for studying adult phenotypes, as the neurodevelopmental features can be subtle or are complicated by broad developmental deficits. Furthermore, most assays that are used to measure dystonia are not suited for developing postnatal mice. …

Metabolomics provides a powerful tool to study physiological changes in response to various perturbations such as vaccination. We explored whether metabolomic changes could be seen after vaccination in a phase I trial where Gabonese adults living either in rural or semi-urban areas received the subunit hookworm vaccine candidates (Na-GST-1 and Na-APR-1 (M74) adjuvanted with Alhydrogel plus GLA-AF (n = 24) or the hepatitis B vaccine (n = 8) as control. Urine samples were collected and assayed using targeted 1H NMR spectroscopy. At baseline, a set of metabolites significantly distinguished rural from semi-urban individuals. The pre- and post-vaccination comparisons indicated significant …

Lawyering Paradoxes: Making Meaning Of The Contradictions, Susan P. Sturm Jan 2022

Lawyering Paradoxes: Making Meaning Of The Contradictions, Susan P. Sturm

Faculty Scholarship

Effective lawyering requires the ability to manage contradictory yet interdependent practices. In their role as traditionally understood, lawyers must fight, judge, debate, minimize risk, and advance clients’ interests. Yet increasingly, lawyers must ALSO collaborate, build trust, innovate, enable effective risk-taking, and hold clients accountable for adhering to societal values. Law students and lawyers alike struggle, often unproductively, to reconcile these tensions. Law schools often address them as a dilemma requiring a choice or overlook the contradictions that interfere with their integration.

This Article argues instead that these seemingly contradictory practices can be brought together through the theory and action of …

PURPOSE: To investigate IL-17 related mechanisms for developing dry eye disease in the Pinkie mouse strain with a loss of function RXRα mutation.

METHODS: Measures of dry eye disease were assessed in the cornea and conjunctiva. Expression profiling was performed by single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) to compare gene expression in conjunctival immune cells. Conjunctival immune cells were immunophenotyped by flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. The activity of RXRα ligand 9-cis retinoic acid (RA) was evaluated in cultured monocytes and γδ T cells.

RESULTS: Compared to wild type (WT) C57BL/6, Pinkie has increased signs of dry eye disease, including decreased tear …

Problem

The need to address Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at university campuses is critical. The campus climate impacts college students' overall collegial relationships and academic abilities. Since 1976, there has been an increase of 19.1% marginalized students enrolled in college. For these students, a sense of belonging is believed to aid in improved collegial relationships and better academic performance. According to the research, students who have positive perceptions of the campus climate tend to be more satisfied with their overall college experience and become more academically successful. Private, faith-based institutions must consider conducting campus climate surveys to assess potential diversity, …

القدس وضواحيها خلال العصرين النيؤوليثي الفخاري المتأخر والخالكوليتي / Jerusalem And Its Vicinity In The Late Pottery Neolithic And Chalcolithic Periods, Ianir Milevski, Ronit Lupu Jan 2022

القدس وضواحيها خلال العصرين النيؤوليثي الفخاري المتأخر والخالكوليتي / Jerusalem And Its Vicinity In The Late Pottery Neolithic And Chalcolithic Periods, Ianir Milevski, Ronit Lupu

Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)

The Late Pottery Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods in the vicinity of Jerusalem and the Judean Hills were almost unknown until the last two decades. As of then, following several salvage excavations and research undertaken in the area, much information has been gathered and summarized. It is noteworthy that until recently, the Late Pottery Neolithic and the Chalcolithic cultures, spanning the Wadi Rabah culture and the Ghassulian Chalcolithic, were known only from small-scale excavations, such as in the northern regions of the country (including the Jordan Valley), the Besor basin and some pre-Ghassulian remains at Teleilat Ghassul in Jordan. This paper …

أرضيات فسيفساء، أواني وأثاث ليتورجي وأجزاء معمارية من دير بيزنطي في وادي قدرون/ وادي النار، القدس / Mosaic Floors, Liturgical Vessels And Furniture, And Architectural Sculpture From The Byzantine Monastery In Naḥal Qidron, Jerusalem, Lihi Habas

Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)

Excavations in the Naḥal Qidron monastery recovered several colorful mosaics. A mosaic floor exhibing geometric interlaces populated by animals was uncovered in the church hall, and a mosaic floor depicting geometric and vegetal patterns was found in the vestibule. The monastery courtyard was paved with a crude white mosaic floor. These mosaics find parallels throughout the Holy Land, dating from the Byzantine and Umayyad periods, in both secular and religious contexts. However, their pronounced connection with other mosaics in the vicinity of Jerusalem suggests that at least one mosaic workshop operated in the Jerusalem area. The Naḥal Qidron mosaics are …

Fashion And Sustainability: Consumption And Shared Responsibility, Jie Gao Fowler, Timothy Reisenwitz, Rongwei Chu Jan 2022

Fashion And Sustainability: Consumption And Shared Responsibility, Jie Gao Fowler, Timothy Reisenwitz, Rongwei Chu

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Indulgence in fashion has been indispensable in modern societies, as it is a crucial device for self-image and identity construction. With the advanced technology and globalization of production, the fashion industry has skewed towards fast fashion, making the latest trends available to mass consumers at affordable prices. This research aims to examine how Chinese consumers perceive sustainable consumption in the context of fashion. We endeavor to explore the factors that influence the engagement of sustainable consumption. This study aims not to argue whether sustainable fashion should mobilize or replace the current fashion system but to provide evidence on consumers' perception …

Supercarriers Of Antibiotic Resistome In A World’S Large River, Jiawen Wang, Rui Pan, Peiyan Dong, Shufeng Liu, Qian Chen, Alistair G.L. Borthwick, Liyu Sun, Nan Xu, Jinren Ni Jan 2022

Supercarriers Of Antibiotic Resistome In A World’S Large River, Jiawen Wang, Rui Pan, Peiyan Dong, Shufeng Liu, Qian Chen, Alistair G.L. Borthwick, Liyu Sun, Nan Xu, Jinren Ni

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Abstract Background Antibiotic resistome has been found to strongly interact with the core microbiota in the human gut, yet little is known about how antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) correlate with certain microbes in large rivers that are regarded as “terrestrial gut.” Results By creating the integral pattern for ARGs and antibiotic-resistant microbes in water and sediment along a 4300-km continuum of the Yangtze River, we found that human pathogen bacteria (HPB) share 13.4% and 5.9% of the ARG hosts in water and sediment but contribute 64% and 46% to the total number of planktonic and sedimentary ARGs, respectively. Moreover, the …

To Fly Or Not To Fly? Comparing Vantage Point And Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle Surveys For Assessments Of Seabird Abundance And Fine-Scale Distribution, Melissa M. Costagliola-Ray, Lilian Lieber, W. Alex M. Nimmo-Smith, Elizabeth A. Masden, Paul Caplat, Jared Wilson, Nina J. O'Hanlon Jan 2022

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Marine renewable energy developments (e.g. offshore wind, wave, and tidal) are an increasing feature within the marine environment. It is therefore important to understand the potential impacts of such developments on seabirds that use these environments. Land-based vantage point (VP) surveys are widely used to collect data for environmental impact assessments (EIAs) within tidal stream energy sites. However, tidal stream environments are highly dynamic and present challenges when conducting VP surveys, for example there can be varying detectability of seabirds due to near-surface turbulence. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the use of uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) …
