He, She, They, Other: An Examination Of Gender Associations With The Chatelaine In The Anglo-Saxon Culture, Dane A. Williams Jan 2022

He, She, They, Other: An Examination Of Gender Associations With The Chatelaine In The Anglo-Saxon Culture, Dane A. Williams

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The purpose of this paper is to study the chatelaine as a marker of gender attribution and overall usage within the Anglo-Saxon culture. Chatelaines are artifacts used to suspend multiple items to be employed for such purposes as grooming, tools, or keys and have been used widely from the Roman occupation of England during which it was used by all genders, to the Ninth Century when it was primarily used by women. As such, it is asserted that a single artifact should not to be solely relied upon to assign a gender identity to a burial, that these should be …

Make No Mistake: The Benefits Of An Errorless Learning Procedure In A Depressed Population, Bethany G. Gorter Jan 2022

Make No Mistake: The Benefits Of An Errorless Learning Procedure In A Depressed Population, Bethany G. Gorter

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Despite evidence of verbal memory deficits in people with depression (Goodall et al., 2018), there are currently minimal studies examining the effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation techniques in this population, and no studies examining the effectiveness of errorless learning procedures (EL). Errorless learning eliminates errors during encoding which contrasts with traditional trial-and-error, effortful learning (EF). This paper argues that because the memory deficits in depression are largely due to dysexecutive functioning (Snyder 2013) errorless learning procedures could be beneficial to this population because it helps reduce the burden on executive functioning during encoding and retrieval. Moreover, a newer modification of errorless …

Conservation In Ecuador's Sangay-Podocarpus Connectivity Corridor: A Study Of Coproductive Capacities, Gabriel Isaac Oppler Jan 2022

Conservation In Ecuador's Sangay-Podocarpus Connectivity Corridor: A Study Of Coproductive Capacities, Gabriel Isaac Oppler

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Connectivity conservation, a growing topic across science, policy, and management, is considered an important supplement to protected areas. A diversity of ecological corridors is emerging to restore fragmented landscapes, preserve intact habitats, protect biodiversity, and improve resilience to climate change. Despite increasing expertise and resources for planning corridors, many initiatives face challenges mobilizing science and governance to implement corridors on the ground. In many cases, biophysical science is supplemented with social science to better understand the human elements of connectivity. Similarly, collaboration and partnership are heralded as essential for effective governance of corridors. However, less is known about how these …

The Effect Of Attentional Manipulation On Cough Reflex Sensitivity In Patients With Cough Hypersensitivity Syndrome, Jane Elizabeth Reynolds Jan 2022

The Effect Of Attentional Manipulation On Cough Reflex Sensitivity In Patients With Cough Hypersensitivity Syndrome, Jane Elizabeth Reynolds

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The cough reflex is complex and requires integration of sensorimotor information from the central and peripheral nervous system. Cough motor output can be volitionally modified even when a strong urge-to-cough (UTC) is felt which reinforces the idea of cortical involvement in cough and opens the door to consider how manipulating attention or changing cognitive load may impact cough reflex sensitivity. Two prior studies have shown healthy individuals have reduced cough reflex sensitivity to inhaled tussigenic stimulants when completing a distracting task, presumably due to influence from increased cognitive load. In this prospective case series study, 13 patients with cough hypersensitivity …

Mapping Racial Capitalism: Implications For Law, Carmen G. Gonzalez, Athena D. Mutua Jan 2022

Mapping Racial Capitalism: Implications For Law, Carmen G. Gonzalez, Athena D. Mutua

Journal Articles

The theory of racial capitalism offers insights into the relationship between class and race, providing both a structural and a historical account of the ways in which the two are linked in the global economy. Law plays an important role in this. This article sketches what we believe are two key structural features of racial capitalism: profit-making and race-making for the purpose of accumulating wealth and power. We understand profit-making as the extraction of surplus value or profits through processes of exploitation, expropriation, and expulsion, which are grounded in a politics of race-making. We understand race-making as including racial stratification, …

The authors are family scholars who study the nexus of religion and family relationships ( Dollahite and Marks, 2020 ; Marks, Hatch, and Dollahite, 2018 ). We have conducted inhome, in- depth interviews (about two hours each) with 30 Jewish couples and families across several states. In this chapter we share many fi rst- person quotations about ritual and practice in Jewish families from three major branches of Judaism: Conservative, Orthodox, and Reform. A unique aspect of these quotes is that a number are from observant Jewish children, youth, and young adults, a group that has been largely overlooked in …

Optimizing Exterior Lighting Illuminance And Spectrum For Human, Environmental, And Economic Factors., S. M. Simmons, Stuart Werner Baur, William L. Gillis, Devin Michael Burns, Heath Pickerill

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

With the recent widespread adoption of LED lighting in outdoor areas, numerous concerns have been raised about the potential for harmful effects on humans, animals, plants, and the night sky. These stem from the high blue light content of some LED bulbs and an incentive to increase lighting levels caused by higher efficiency and lower costs. While new lighting installations are often described as environmentally friendly due to their energy efficiency, factors such as light pollution are often neglected or not given enough weight. This research focuses on optimizing the design of exterior lighting for human, environmental, and economic factors …

Teaching Income Inequality With Data-Driven Visualization, Sang T. Truong, Humberto Barreto Jan 2022

Teaching Income Inequality With Data-Driven Visualization, Sang T. Truong, Humberto Barreto

School of Business and Leadership Working Papers

The distribution of household income is a central concern in economics due to its strong influence on society’s well-being and social cohesion. Yet, non-expert audiences face serious obstacles in understanding conventional measures of inequality. To effectively communicate the extent of income inequality in the United States, we have developed a novel technique for visualizing income distribution and its dispersion over time by using U.S. household income microdata from the Current Population Survey. The result is a striking dynamic animation of income distribution over time, drawing public attention and encouraging further investigation of income inequality. Detailed implementation is available at https://github.com/sangttruong/incomevis. …

An Evaluation Of The Biologics Price Competition And Innovation Act And Its Impact On Innovation In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Tara Williams Jan 2022

An Evaluation Of The Biologics Price Competition And Innovation Act And Its Impact On Innovation In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Tara Williams

Theses

In the pharmaceutical industry, innovation is vital to bring more life-saving treatment options to patients. However, pharmaceutical manufacturers face strict safety and effectiveness guidelines set forth by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), before being able to place their innovations on the market. In attempts to balance the need for continuous innovation and stringent regulation, policymakers created the Biologics Price Competition and Innovation Act (BPCIA) of 2009. The BPCIA allows biosimilars manufacturers to enter a shortened FDA approval pathway and provides incentives for biologics manufacturers with the aims to decrease cost and increase access to medications for patients by …

Mandhar Smart Application For The Visual Pollution In Muhaisnah-2 Area – Dubai Uae, Hamda Mohamed Alharmoudi

Theses

People naturally love beauty, beautiful views, and a beautiful environment. Beauty is the human eye that makes him happy and brings pleasure to his heart. If sport feeds the body and science feeds the mind, then beauty feeds the soul and the mind, all the beauty around us feeds the brain that has a positive impact on human life, and the distortion that we encounter in our life has a negative impact on us. Therefore, visual pollution is defined as, everything that is inconsistent with the beauty of the environment that surrounds us which create a harmful change for the …

Sustainable Food Waste Management Through The Integration Of Anaerobic Digestion And Thermochemical Processes, Diana Carolina Rodriguez Alberto Jan 2022

Sustainable Food Waste Management Through The Integration Of Anaerobic Digestion And Thermochemical Processes, Diana Carolina Rodriguez Alberto

Theses

The processing of food waste along with animal manure through anaerobic digestion (AD) is a popular waste management strategy. However, there is the concern that with the proliferation of AD the management of its nutrient-rich effluent, known as digestate, becomes a challenge. Current digestate management practices not only present environmental risks, but also issues related to the seasonality of field spreading and the storage and transportation of large volumes of material. The integration of the AD process with thermochemical conversion (TC) could help reduce some of these issues. The production of biochar from materials already available in the digester setting, …

Faking Sensor Noise Information, Justin Chang Jan 2022

Faking Sensor Noise Information, Justin Chang

Master's Projects

Noise residue detection in digital images has recently been used as a method to classify images based on source camera model type. The meteoric rise in the popularity of using Neural Network models has also been used in conjunction with the concept of noise residuals to classify source camera models. However, many papers gloss over the details on the methods of obtaining noise residuals and instead rely on the self- learning aspect of deep neural networks to implicitly discover this themselves. For this project I propose a method of obtaining noise residuals (“noiseprints”) and denoising an image, as well as …

A Laser Frequency Transverse Modulation Might Compensate For The Spectral Broadening Due To Large Electron Energy Spread In Thomson Sources, Vittoria Petrillo, Illya Drebot, Geoffrey Krafft, Cesare Maroli, Andrea R. Rossi, Marcello Rossetti Conti, Marcel Ruijter, Balša Terzić

Physics Faculty Publications

Compact laser plasma accelerators generate high-energy electron beams with increasing quality. When used in inverse Compton backscattering, however, the relatively large electron energy spread jeopardizes potential applications requiring small bandwidths. We present here a novel interaction scheme that allows us to compensate for the negative effects of the electron energy spread on the spectrum, by introducing a transverse spatial frequency modulation in the laser pulse. Such a laser chirp, together with a properly dispersed electron beam, can substantially reduce the broadening of the Compton bandwidth due to the electron energy spread. We show theoretical analysis and numerical simulations for hard …

Immunizations are the most effective method for preventing communicable diseases, especially among children. Ensuring that children are vaccinated is of the utmost importance but remains a challenge due to misinformation and the growing anti-vaccination movement. With a population of 39.5 million people as of 2020 (Census Bureau, n.d.), California is the most populous state in the United States. In 2020, the San Francisco Bay Area, which includes the counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma, is home to 7.7 million of those people (Census Bureau, 2021). This research will explore how …

5g Mobility Management Using Satellites In Leo (Low Earth Orbit), Peter Knight Jan 2022

5g Mobility Management Using Satellites In Leo (Low Earth Orbit), Peter Knight

Master's Projects

As technology moves forward we find ourselves demanding faster and better quality internet. Towards that end, 5G was developed. While cell towers are already being built with 5G in mind, some of the built-in limitations of 5G mean that we may be seeing satellites with it in the near future. This development would require a drastic change in the current algorithms used for handovers. These algorithms fail to take into account the high relative velocity of the satellites and result in many unnecessary handovers which increases the likelihood of a dropped connection. This paper will propose and evaluate the effectiveness …

Four Perspectives On A Sustaibable Future In Nosara, Costa Rica, Greg Munno, Alvara Salas Castro, Tina Nabatchi, Christian M. Freitag

Media Studies - Open-Access Faculty Scholarship

The town of Nosara on Costa Rica’s Nicoya peninsula is home to a vibrant community of diverse residents and is adjacent to an important turtle nesting site. However, tensions between lifelong residents, more recent transplants, visitors, and developers have increased as more of the world discovers this once-isolated haven. Climate change, income inequality, and alienation from a distant government apparatus have further complicated effective land-use planning and fractured social cohesion. Using a mixed method approach of in-depth interviews (n = 67), Q methodology (n = 79), and public deliberation (n = 88), we explored residents’ priorities for the future of …

Sentience Politics : A Fishy Perspective, Culum Brown Jan 2022

Sentience Politics : A Fishy Perspective, Culum Brown

Animal Sentience

The plight of fishes has almost certainly got worse since Bentham (1789) coined the phrase “The question is not Can they reason? nor, Can they talk? but Can they suffer?” Despite the fact that fishes are increasingly recognised as sentient animals worthy of protection under animal welfare legislation in many countries around the world, fishing practices are almost universally exempt activities. The human population continues to grow, and, surprisingly, per capita intake of fish is still increasing (FAO 2020). The source of this fish is not wild stocks (catches of which have remained more or less stagnant for …

Price Premiums And Willingness-To-Pay For Misleading Food Labels, Alexa Jacobs

Research Papers

There are many food products sold with labels on them that may be misleading to the consumer. Almost every one of these labels comes with a price premium that consumers must pay if they wish to purchase those specific items. Many consumers place a value on these specific food labels and determine that paying more for a product with these labels is worth it to them, despite many consumers not understanding the true meaning of the labels. This study looks at and compares what the price premiums are for different food products at different stores in both the Carbondale, Illinois …

Carving An Indian Mosaic For Image-Based Sexual Abuse, Aanchal Kabra, Rohit Gupta Jan 2022

Carving An Indian Mosaic For Image-Based Sexual Abuse, Aanchal Kabra, Rohit Gupta

National Law School of India Review

In 2021, India crossed the threshold of the quantum of revenge porn cases, necessitating a public discourse on compartmentalizing the offence within pre-existing, yet outdated, legislations. Exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, these reports come at the heels of the growing image-based sexual abuse in India, exemplified by other cases of voyeurism and sextortion. Despite the increasing statistics, image- based sexual abuse, as a systematic class of sexual crimes against women and children, remains virtually unrecognized in Indian scholarship and legislation. This paper proposes a comprehensive legislative framework for the battle against image-based sexual abuse. In doing so, it classifies each …

Comparison Of Mechanical And Column Flotation Performances On Recovery Of Phosphate Slimes In Presence Of Nano-Microbubbles, Fatemeh Taghavi, Mohammad Noaparast, Ziaeddin Pourkarimi, Fardis Nakhaei Jan 2022

Comparison Of Mechanical And Column Flotation Performances On Recovery Of Phosphate Slimes In Presence Of Nano-Microbubbles, Fatemeh Taghavi, Mohammad Noaparast, Ziaeddin Pourkarimi, Fardis Nakhaei

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Fine particle flotation has been one of the main problems in many mineral processing plants. The bubble-particle collision rate is very low for fine particles, which reduces flotation efficiency. Also, the existence of slimes is, generally, detrimental to the flotation process, affecting the selectivity and the quality of the concentrates. Besides, it causes an increase in reagents consumption. Hence, in most of processing plants, some of these particles are transmitted to the tailing ponds to reduce the effects of these problems and increase the selectivity of the process. Esfordi phosphate plant in Iran loses more than 30% of its capacity …

The RE1 Silencing Transcription Factor (REST) is a major regulator of neurogenesis and brain development. Medulloblastoma (MB) is a pediatric brain cancer characterized by a blockade of neuronal specification. REST gene expression is aberrantly elevated in a subset of MBs that are driven by constitutive activation of sonic hedgehog (SHH) signaling in cerebellar granular progenitor cells (CGNPs), the cells of origin of this subgroup of tumors. To understand its transcriptional deregulation in MBs, we first studied control of Rest gene expression during neuronal differentiation of normal mouse CGNPs. Higher Rest expression was observed in proliferating CGNPs compared to differentiating neurons. …

OBJECTIVE: We report the feasibility and validity of implementing two eMeasures. The eMeasures determined the proportion of patients receiving a caries risk assessment (eCRA) and corresponding appropriate risk-based preventative treatments for patients at elevated risk of caries (appropriateness of care [eAoC]) in two academic institutions and one accountable care organization, in the 2019 reporting year.

METHODS: Both eMeasures define the numerator and denominator beginning at the patient level, populations' specifications, and validated the automated queries. For …

Predicting Clinical Response To Everolimus In Er+ Breast Cancers Using Machine-Learning, Aritro Nath, Patrick A Cosgrove, Jeffrey T Chang, Andrea H Bild Jan 2022

Predicting Clinical Response To Everolimus In Er+ Breast Cancers Using Machine-Learning, Aritro Nath, Patrick A Cosgrove, Jeffrey T Chang, Andrea H Bild

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Endocrine therapy remains the primary treatment choice for ER+ breast cancers. However, most advanced ER+ breast cancers ultimately develop resistance to endocrine. This acquired resistance to endocrine therapy is often driven by the activation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. Everolimus, a drug that targets and inhibits the mTOR complex has been shown to improve clinical outcomes in metastatic ER+ breast cancers. However, there are no biomarkers currently available to guide the use of everolimus in the clinic for progressive patients, where multiple therapeutic options are available. Here, we utilized gene expression signatures from 9 ER+ breast cancer cell lines and …
