Defining The Endmember System Of Us Soils And Quantifying Relationships, And A Hyperspectral Approach To The Alteration Strength Index, Rachel Rulison
Defining The Endmember System Of Us Soils And Quantifying Relationships, And A Hyperspectral Approach To The Alteration Strength Index, Rachel Rulison
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Soils form a complex part of the environment, providing important functions in systems such as food production, groundwater movement, and ecosystem health. There have been numerous studies on soil geochemistry and the origin of elements within soils, but few studies into quantifying the relationships between elements and geographical data on a national scale. Using geochemical data obtained by the USGS, the surficial soils of the US were defined by a 13-endmember system using Polytopic Vector Analysis and mapped in GIS. Correlation matrices provided Pearson’s correlation coefficients for elements in the Top 5 cm soil profile, the A horizon, and the …
Collective Hydrodynamics Of Robotic Fish, Rohit S. Pandhare
Collective Hydrodynamics Of Robotic Fish, Rohit S. Pandhare
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Many animals in nature travel in groups either for protection, survival, or endurance. Among these, fish do so under the burden of hydrodynamic loads, which incites questions as to the significance of the multi-body fluid-mediated interactions that facilitate collective swimming. We study such interactions in the idealized setting of a rotational array of robotic fish whose tails undergo a prescribed flapping motion, but whose swimming speed is determined as a natural result of the hydrodynamic effects. Specifically, we examine how the measured collective speed of the swimmers varies with the imposed frequency and amplitude of their tail flapping, and with …
Rebuilding Fish-Human Relationships By Quantifying Combined Toxicity And Evaluating Policy Related To Legacy Contamination, Emily Shaw
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The central theme of this dissertation is relationships – building relationships as research partnerships, disrupting relationships through chemical contamination, and upholding existing relationships (i.e., responsibilities) to address industrial legacies. In partnership with the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Lake Superior Band of Chippewa Indians (KBIC), this dissertation focuses on rebuilding fish-human relationships within the context of chemical contamination. By quantifying combined toxicity and evaluating the efficacy of cleaning up contamination, conclusions from this work help empower people to maintain practices and knowledges related to fish.
In chapter 1, I positioned myself, a white, American settler scholar, within the context of Indigenous …
Avian Haemosporidian Blood Parasite Diversity, Prevalence, And Distribution In Michigan’S Western Upper Peninsula, Maria M. Ferrer
Avian Haemosporidian Blood Parasite Diversity, Prevalence, And Distribution In Michigan’S Western Upper Peninsula, Maria M. Ferrer
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Avian haemosporidian parasites, known as avian malaria (phylum Apicomplexa) can diminish an individual bird’s fitness by causing parasitemia, anemia, and reduced survival. Climate change is predicted to increase the spread of malarial parasites into more northerly latitudes where little is known about community compositions of these parasites. I assessed the prevalence and diversity of haemosporidian parasites in the first-ever community-level sampling of malaria in songbirds across the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In total, 179 blood samples were collected from birds representing 17 species, at five locations in the Upper Peninsula, including a mature forest, an early successional forest, and …
Isolation And Chromatographic Separation Of Cytotoxic Plant Compounds, Michael C. Hromada
Isolation And Chromatographic Separation Of Cytotoxic Plant Compounds, Michael C. Hromada
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Plants produce diverse bioactive compounds that are used in the treatment of diseases such as cancer, microbial infection, and cardiovascular diseases. Our lab has discovered a potential anticancer compound named Hemolysin X (HelyX) in the storage and germination tissues of a plant species. Investigation of this compound relies on aqueous extraction which limits the isolation of other potentially important hydrophobic compounds. To overcome this limitation and to determine if HelyX is distributed in other tissues of the plant (such as flower), organic extracts of flower tissue were examined by analytical thin layer chromatography (TLC), preparative TLC, and silica gel column …
The Language Of Development In The Rhetoric Of Liberian Presidents, Tolulope Aina Odebunmi
The Language Of Development In The Rhetoric Of Liberian Presidents, Tolulope Aina Odebunmi
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
This dissertation contests the framing of “development” in Liberian presidential discourse — Inaugural and State of the Nation addresses of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (EJS) and George Weah through Reisigl & Wodak's (2016) Discourse Historical Analysis (DHA) and conceptions of political ideologies (Chilton & Schaffner, 2002; van Dijk, 2006; Fairclough & Wodak, 1997). Aristotelian rhetoric complements my analysis. I turn to Mohanty (1988), Mama (2001), and other theorists of globalization for theorizing the subjectivity of third world subjects, setting up the complex connections between the periphery and global south. Through a linguistic, historical, and rhetorical analysis, I contest the framing and …
Evolutionary Conservation Of The Dream Subcomplex Muvb, Spencer Snider
Evolutionary Conservation Of The Dream Subcomplex Muvb, Spencer Snider
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
As the publications of annotated genomes from species representing most domains of life continue to grow exponentially, we are gaining more insight into how proteins, cellular pathways, and protein complexes evolved. We are interested in understanding how each protein in the 8-subunit transcriptional repressor complex called DREAM interacts with each other. DREAM is comprised of 3 main components: an E2F-DP transcription factor heterodimer, a pocket protein, and the highly conserved 5-subunit subcomplex called MuvB. We hypothesize that the mechanism of DREAM’s formation on chromatin dictates how DREAM functions to turn off target gene expression. Unfortunately, many interaction surfaces remain unknown, …

Display Site Selection By Male Ruffed Grouse In The Upper Great Lakes Region, Seth Finkel
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus) is widely known for its characteristic territorial drumming display. In this study, I used ruffed grouse drumming survey data from Minnesota and Michigan, in a series of mixed logistic models, to identify drivers of drumming log selection by reproductive male ruffed grouse. I collected drumming stage data utilizing a paired-random sampling structure. I used information theoretic model selection to examine three sets of a priori mixed logistic models: one for the entirety of my Minnesota dataset, one consisting of stages identified in aspen stands in Minnesota, and one for my Michigan dataset. In …
An Antimicrobial Polydopamine Surface Coating To Reduce Biofouling On Telemetry Tags Used In Marine Conservation Practices, Ariana Smies
An Antimicrobial Polydopamine Surface Coating To Reduce Biofouling On Telemetry Tags Used In Marine Conservation Practices, Ariana Smies
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Satellite telemetry tags are used to track the migration patterns of large cetaceans. These tags penetrate the dermis and remain embedded in the underlying blubber tissue. As the dermis of cetaceans is host to a diverse microbiome, and it is impossible to clean the skin before implanting the devices, the potential for infection is increased when the tags penetrate through the skin. H2O2 is a potential antimicrobial agent that, in addition to showing broad-spectrum efficacy against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, can promote wound healing outcomes by promoting proliferative factors and peptides that protect against oxidative stress. However, …
Beyond Homogenous Decision-Making Models: Role Of Brain Areas Interaction And Heterogeneity, Mohsen Rakhshan
Beyond Homogenous Decision-Making Models: Role Of Brain Areas Interaction And Heterogeneity, Mohsen Rakhshan
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Most existing mechanistic models of decision making consider microcircuits within a homogenous brain area and fail to consider the distributed nature of this cognitive process. More specifically, these models do not take into account: a) how different types of information might influence choice in different stages of the process; and b) how interactions and the heterogeneity between circuits across different brain areas might be essential for the process. In this dissertation, I present a combination of experimental and modeling approaches to study distributed nature of the decision-making by examining both the distributed processing of information as well as the interaction …
Phase-Changing Nanodroplets As Nanotheranostic Platform For Combination Cancer Therapy, Catalina-Paula Spatarelu
Phase-Changing Nanodroplets As Nanotheranostic Platform For Combination Cancer Therapy, Catalina-Paula Spatarelu
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Cancer is a cluster of diseases, and 1.8 million Americans are newly diagnosed each year. Treatment issues such as drug instability, the occurrence of severe side effects, as well as resistance make the need for solutions to improve conventional methods, like chemotherapy, apparent. Nano-sized drug-delivery platforms, particles loaded with therapeutic molecules that escape the immune system clearance and accumulate at the tumor site, were proposed as one of these solutions. Despite the expansion of the field, several aspects still need to be addressed: inconsistent delivery of the drugs, inability of measuring the effective dose being delivered to the tumor, lack …
In Situ Vaccination Using Plant Viral Particles As A Novel Approach For Cancer Immunotherapy, Chenkai Mao
In Situ Vaccination Using Plant Viral Particles As A Novel Approach For Cancer Immunotherapy, Chenkai Mao
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Non-infectious to mammals, genetically, and physically stable plant virus-based nanoparticles have been increasingly studied as a novel platform for cancer vaccine and adjuvants due to their immunogenic properties. Our prior work showed that, empty cowpea mosaic virus (eCPMV), a plant virus-like particle (VLP) that is composed of a separated capsid, is an excellent in situ vaccine (ISV) for cancer immunotherapy; however, little is known about the mechanisms linked to their activities regarding recognition and antigen presentation.
In the present studies, we report cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) and RNA-lacking CPMV (empty, eCPMV) are both toll like receptor (TLR) agonists for TLRs …
Links Between Electrophilic Stress And Antifungal Resistance In Pathogenic Candida Species, Amy R. Biermann
Links Between Electrophilic Stress And Antifungal Resistance In Pathogenic Candida Species, Amy R. Biermann
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Collectively, Candida species are the most prevalent cause of both superficial and invasive fungal infections worldwide. Invasive Candida infections have a high mortality rate and predominantly affect individuals with underlying diseases, such as diabetes, HIV, or cancer. Unfortunately, many invasive Candida infections are recalcitrant to antifungal treatment, while intrinsically multidrug-resistant pathogens, like Candida auris, are increasing in prevalence. Although the canonical mechanisms of antifungal resistance in Candida species are well established, i.e., overexpression of efflux pumps and overexpression of or mutations in genes encoding drug targets, factors affecting the natural evolution and regulation of resistance mechanisms remain poorly understood. …
Soil Organic Carbon Accumulation In Restored Native Prairies Over Time, Samrin Shahnaz
Soil Organic Carbon Accumulation In Restored Native Prairies Over Time, Samrin Shahnaz
Honors Program Theses
With the recent focus on the causes and effects of climate change, the relationship between agriculture and climate change has become an important concern. Conventional farming maximizes crop production at the expense of ecosystem services like soil carbon storage. As the human population grows, it is vital to develop practices that balance crop production and ecosystem services.
We investigated organic carbon accumulation in restored prairie soil over the course of a decade. Our goal was to determine how organic carbon levels and soil bulk density changed over time, and how that change was influenced by species diversity and soil depth. …
The Development Of A Photographic Atlas Of Plant Adaptations For Pollination, Bethany Van Dusseldorp
The Development Of A Photographic Atlas Of Plant Adaptations For Pollination, Bethany Van Dusseldorp
Honors Program Theses
Plants have biotic, abiotic, or both biotic and abiotic adaptations for pollination, depending on how they are structured and the attraction between the plant and pollinator. The main focus for this project was biotic adaptations for pollination, and how various plants are specifically structured for the insect, bird, or mammal to pick up the pollen and carry it to the next plant. Documentation, using image/focus stacking and macro photography, was done of the structures of various plants from the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Botanical Center to support the reason for why plants are structured the way they are. While …

Weird Critters: A Visual Narrative Inspired By Paleontology And Teratology, Kate Murray
Weird Critters: A Visual Narrative Inspired By Paleontology And Teratology, Kate Murray
Honors Program Theses
Attempts to fuse fantasy and science fiction art work tend to be unidirectional. The artists begin with things that don’t make sense and then force them to make sense to the audience. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways. In some images, dinosaurs are given mechanically sound contraptions; dragons are given tendons, and basilisks are drawn with surprising accuracy. It applies science to the fictional to create an image that is plausible. However, my experience with developmental biology and paleontology suggests that it is equally possible to take it in the other direction and begin with things that …
Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy Analysis Of Native American Pottery For Maple Syrup Residues, Alexis Wirtz
Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy Analysis Of Native American Pottery For Maple Syrup Residues, Alexis Wirtz
Honors Program Theses
The research conducted regards whether or not Native Americans understood how to create maple syrup before the influence of Europeans. The analytical technique that was used is gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). This technique assisted in understanding what organic residues resided within the pottery and what those organic residues tell us about Native American history. An analysis of organic residues was performed on the following types of pottery: proof of concept pottery, weathered pottery (an analog of the proof of concept), and Native American pottery. The residues used in analysis were obtained through the usage of different solvent systems - Acetone: …

Measuring The Physicochemical Properties Of Viral Vectors To Enhance Gene Therapy Production, Oluwatoyin Areo
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Gene therapy is a therapeutic intervention designed to correct single gene disorders. AAV has been identified as a suitable vector for delivering therapeutic genes. However, the use of AAV has been hampered by manufacturing challenges inclusive of low virus recovery, and the presence of AAV without the gene of interest (empty capsids). To solve these problems, we characterized the charge and hydrophobicity of AAV, and surrogate viruses using chemical force microscopy (CFM). CFM uses a modified atomic force microscope (AFM) probe to measure the adhesion force between a virus particle and a functional chemistry. The virus particles to be measured are …
Estimation And Modulation Of Persistent Inward Currents In Human Spinal Motoneurons, Ricardo Neves De Oliveira Mesquita
Estimation And Modulation Of Persistent Inward Currents In Human Spinal Motoneurons, Ricardo Neves De Oliveira Mesquita
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The manner in which motoneurons respond to excitatory and inhibitory input depends strongly on how their intrinsic properties are influenced by neuromodulators. Importantly, activation of voltage-gated channels that generate persistent (long-lasting) inward currents (PICs) is crucial for initiation, acceleration, and maintenance of firing. The overall aim of this thesis was to develop new ways to both estimate and modulate PIC contributions to motoneuron firing in humans.
Hypothetically, PIC estimation in humans might be possible by examining muscle force and electromyographic activity responses to tendon vibration superimposed with bursts of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) in an otherwise-inactive muscle (VibStim). Such activation …

Pitch Perfect: Impression Formation And Impression Management In Women's Pitch Modulation, Grace A. Corrigan
Scripps Senior Theses
How does the pitch of a woman’s voice impact how she is perceived, and how might women change the pitch of their voices to fit the situation at hand? Study 1 examined whether pitch plays a role in impression formation. Participants listened to two women’s voices at three pitch levels (raised, unchanged, lowered) and rated the speakers’ personality traits. Ratings of speaker competence, confidence, and intelligence were significantly lower for the pitch-raised voices than for the unchanged or pitch-lowered voices. Additionally, ratings of speaker persuasiveness and attractiveness were significantly lower for the pitch-raised voices than for the unchanged voices. No …

Distributor As Tastemaker: Neon And The American Independent Film Sector, Lucie Boulet-Gercourt
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis explores the role of independent film distributor NEON as a leading tastemaker in the American indie sector. Founded in 2017, NEON has distinguished itself from competing studios and streaming services by maintaining a commitment to the theatrical experience and to genres that Hollywood has been historically hesitant to embrace. Using Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of the ‘cultural intermediary,’ I analyze how NEON has demonstrated its viability within the indie sector through its promotional strategies, chosen avenues of distribution, and specific film products. While media industry scholars have recently revisited Bourdieu’s theory in order to study producers of cultural value, …
Deconstructing U.S. Army Maps Of Korea: A Case Study For Rethinking Historical Environmental Data, Lee Beckwith
Deconstructing U.S. Army Maps Of Korea: A Case Study For Rethinking Historical Environmental Data, Lee Beckwith
Scripps Senior Theses
At a time when the natural world and global climate are experiencing extreme changes at unprecedented speeds, understanding these environmental changes over time is more important than ever. With advances in remote sensing technology, large amounts of information about the natural world are becoming more accessible than ever before; however, satellite-collected data are only available from 1984 onwards. To understand how land use has changed on longer timescales, researchers have turned towards archival maps as a data source. Archival maps are a rich source of environmental information; however, they are often saturated with complicated colonial histories. Maps, more so than …

Picture This! Arts Integration In The Classroom To Aid Retention Of Abstract Science Concepts, Chloe Gorman
Scripps Senior Theses
Previous cognitive science research has shown the “drawing effect,” in which people tend to have better recall for something they’ve drawn rather than written. The drawing effect is an example of a “desirable difficulty,” as drawing often takes more mental effort than reading or writing. This study explored whether the drawing effect would persist for more abstract words, which might be overly difficult to draw; rather, they might be a difficulty that is no longer desirable and instead just a source of distraction or cognitive overload. Participants were presented with more abstract and less abstract science terms and alternated drawing …
Let’S Have A Playdate! Comparing Autistic Children's Social Behavior During Play Sessions With Siblings Versus Peers, Clare Boldt
Let’S Have A Playdate! Comparing Autistic Children's Social Behavior During Play Sessions With Siblings Versus Peers, Clare Boldt
Scripps Senior Theses
Autistic individuals can struggle with social interactions and forming friendships. While siblings and peers are used for social skills intervention, there is a paucity of research analyzing differences in autistic children’s play with siblings versus peers. Investigating these behavior differences helps clinicians learn how to best support social skill development, improve sibling relationships, and determine ideal peer mediators for interventions. I compare social behaviors of autistic children during play sessions with their sibling versus a non-sibling peer. The behaviors measured were prosocial behaviors, cooperative and parallel play, verbalizations (appropriate and inappropriate), aggressive behaviors, eloping, and stereotypy. Based on previous literature, …

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Dam failures occur worldwide and can be economically and ecologically devastating. Communicating the scale of these risks to the general public and decision-makers is imperative. Two-dimensional (2D) dam failure hydraulic models inform owners and floodplain managers of flood regimes but have limitations when shared with non-specialists. This study addresses these limitations by constructing a 3D Virtual Reality (VR) environment to display the 1976 Teton Dam disaster case study using a pipeline composed of (1) 2D hydraulic model data (extrapolated into 3D), (2) a 3D reconstructed dam, and (3) a terrain model processed from UAS (Uncrewed Airborne System) imagery using Structure …
