Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to create Indocyanine Green (ICG) loaded liposomal formulations that were efficient and had controlled drug release. During the Second World War, the photographic dye indocyanine green (ICG) was created. ICG was developed as a medical diagnostic tool for cardiac output tests and for monitoring liver function after receiving FDA approval. The preparation of ICG-encapsulated conventional and PEGylated liposomes containing different types of phosphatidylcholine (PC) such as HSPC, DSPC, DPPC and cholesterol (CH) in the molar ratios of 55:45 and PC:CH: DSPE-PEG2K (polyethylene glycol) in the molar ratio of 55:40:5 respectively was done using …

Natural Law And Universal Human Rights, David F. Forte Jan 2022

Natural Law And Universal Human Rights, David F. Forte

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Abdullahi An-Na'im has set his life's quest on attempting to find a way that Muslim society can be attuned to the moral commands of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a Western creation. At present, the Shari'a and the Declaration are in obvious tension, if not conflict, in areas such as freedom of religion and the rights of women. An-Na'im finds that the Shari 'a is a creation of man derived in history from an interpretation of Islamic sources. Muslims today can legitimately develop their own interpretation relying on the root sources of Islam, but only so long as those …

Overlooked And Under-Referred, Gretchen Spencer Jan 2022

Overlooked And Under-Referred, Gretchen Spencer

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

According to the National Association for Gifted Children (2019) up to 10% of the population can benefit from receiving gifted services. Due to wide variability in definition, identification and services offered, the NAGC recognized that gifted students have been and continue to be overlooked (NAGC, 2019). Not only are gifted students under identified overall, the ratio of identified students who are Black, Latine, special education, and female was lower than the ratio in the population and occurred at a significantly lower rate than their white counterparts (Ecker-Lyster & Niileksela, 2017). The issue of underrepresentation within the gifted population has …

The Role Of Glis3 In Zebrafish Endocrine Development And Regeneration, Tasha Swenney Jan 2022

The Role Of Glis3 In Zebrafish Endocrine Development And Regeneration, Tasha Swenney

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Maintenance of proper blood glucose homeostasis is governed by the endocrine cells of the pancreas. Dysregulation of blood glucose is characteristic of the disease, diabetes mellitus. Relatively little is known about the molecular mechanisms that underlie diabetes. The genes associated with more common forms of diabetes remain more enigmatic and likely have less direct roles in blood glucose homeostasis such as glucose sensing, insulin secretion, and β cell maintenance. GLIS3, a transcription factor involved in pancreatic development as well as the transcriptional regulation of insulin has been identified as a risk locus for type 1 and type 2 diabetes …

Lending A Paw: Does The Presence Of A Dog Increase Donations Given To Homeless Individuals?, Katherine Link

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Prosocial behavior can be defined as any behavior that results in the benefit of another individual (Coyne et al., 2018). This study sought to investigate potential influences on the prosocial behavior of donating to the homeless. With a rise in both homelessness and dog ownership, this project sought to investigate how the presence of a dog may impact both the willingness to donate and monetary amount donated to a homeless individual. Results indicated a significant three-way interaction between the sex of the homeless individual, the sex of the participant, and the presence of a dog. Overall, the presence of a …

Effects Of Covid-19 Mandates On Student Engagement And Management Of Collegiate Equestrian Teams, Travis Fortune

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Events like a global pandemic can negatively impact how organizations and groups function. From a collegiate perspective, this could include limiting or eliminating participation in co-curricular activities that have positive impacts on student experiences. Students use these events to make new friends, socialize and generate a sense of belonging, and gain interactions outside the classroom. In March 2020, a number of mandated restrictions were put into place in the United States in response to COVID-19, and collegiate equestrian teams' ability to practice and show were negatively impacted. Even though some restrictions were beginning to ease as of Fall 2021, many …

Return Of Floodplain Connectivity And Concurrent Macroinvertebrate Community Response Following Wetland Restoration In Western Kentucky, Christiane M. Soldo Ms.

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Wetlands improve the quality of our nation’s streams, rivers, and lakes, and they support a diverse assemblage of plant and animal species. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS) is responsible for administering the Wetland Reserve Program (WRP), a multi-billion-dollar effort to restore wetlands throughout the nation. Each year, WRP enrolls thousands of acres of private farmland into conservation easements with the goal of improving water quality and creating wildlife habitat. Hydrological modification structures, such as levee breaks, ditch plugs, or shallow water areas are constructed on easements to create wetlands by improving water retention and returning …

Data was collected utilizing an online survey distributed to an online general population sample (n = 105). A measure of attitudes towards service …

Habitat Use And Diel Movements Of Silver Carp Hypophthalmichthys Molitrix In Two Southeastern Reservoirs, Levi Umland Jan 2022

Habitat Use And Diel Movements Of Silver Carp Hypophthalmichthys Molitrix In Two Southeastern Reservoirs, Levi Umland

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Bigheaded carp have spread rampantly throughout the Mississippi watershed and continue to spread by navigating through rivers, locks, and dams. The long-term effects these species will have on our ecosystems and natural resources is unknown. Their movements, behavior, and general seasonal patterns are well studied within rivers. However, their movements and behavior within reservoirs is poorly understood due to their initial numbers within reservoirs being lower than in rivers. To address this gap, I investigated the distribution and movement rates of Silver Carp within two reservoirs, Kentucky Reservoir and Barkley Reservoir, and possible correlative variables, including wind, temperature, residency, sex, …

Ter Braak, Abdellatif Bakkali, Eduard A. Struys, Christopher D. Morrison, Marjo S. Van Der Knaap, Truus E.M. Abbink

Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications

Objective: Vanishing white matter (VWM) is a genetic brain white matter disorder caused by mutations in eIF2B. eIF2B is central in the integrated stress response (ISR), during which its activity is inhibited by various cellular stresses. VWM is a chronic progressive disease with episodes of rapid neurological deterioration provoked by stresses. VWM patients and VWM mouse models show ISR deregulation in brain, correlating with chronic disease development. ISR inhibition ameliorates the chronic disease in VWM mice. The subacute deteriorations have not been modeled yet. We hypothesized that ISR activation could worsen disease progression in mice and model the episodic neurological …

Obesity: Understanding And Achieving A Healthy Weight, George A. Bray, Catherine M. Champagne Jan 2022

Obesity: Understanding And Achieving A Healthy Weight, George A. Bray, Catherine M. Champagne

Population and Public Health Science Faculty Publications

Obesity is a chronic, relapsing, stigmatized disease process that is increasing in prevalence, affecting both adults and children. It is the result of a small positive energy imbalance from too much food or too little activity. These underlying causes are influenced by many environmental factors. The food we eat is more than “calories,” and focusing on calories alone may not be as productive as focusing on patterns of eating and the role of sugar and fat in the diet. Obesity increases the risk of many diseases and shortens life span, and weight loss provides benefits in reducing health risks and …

Authentically Advocating: Public Relations' Role In Social Issues Management, Gabrielle Leigh Dudgeon

Theses and Dissertations--Communication

Now more than ever, organizations utilize public relations to build, maintain, and even strengthen relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Many public relations strategies and tactics serve to bridge an organization’s interests with those of their publics, while also building, maintaining, and strengthening trust. Social issues management is one of the tools that has the potential to build long-term trust and commitment. Public relations practitioners have recognized this opportunity, and most engage in social issues management in a variety of ways to strengthen their organizations while also contributing to society (Fall, 2006). This double-edge tool can create long- lasting impact …

Decitizenizing Asian Pacific American Women, Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia, Margaret Hu Jan 2022

Decitizenizing Asian Pacific American Women, Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia, Margaret Hu

University of Colorado Law Review

The Page Act of 1875 excluded Asian women immigrants from entering the United States, presuming they were prostitutes. This presumption was tragically replicated in the 2021 Atlanta Massacre of six Asian and Asian American women, reinforcing the same harmful prejudices. This Article seeks to illuminate how the Atlanta Massacre is symbolic of larger forms of discrimination, including the harms of decitizenship. These harms include limited access to full citizenship rights due to legal barriers, restricted cultural and political power, and a lack of belonging. The Article concludes that these harms result from the structure of past and present immigration laws …

A Lineage Of Family Separation, Anita Sinha Jan 2022

A Lineage Of Family Separation, Anita Sinha

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This article is rooted in the belief that the articulation of shared narrative histories advances the pursuit of justice. Acknowledging shared histories, including narratives that justify unjust practices has been a shortcoming in the United States, particularly when it comes to racial injustice. Included in this oversight is the history of executing and sanctioning family separation. The US government's separation of families under the "zero tolerance" policy, which was in effect over approximately two and a half months, drew national and international criticism.

Airway remodeling (AR) increases disease severity, and morbidity of asthmatic patients by contributing to irreversible airflow obstruction and progressive declines in lung function. Arginase isoenzymes and the downstream enzymes ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) and ornithine aminotransferase (OAT) have been implicated in the hyperplastic and fibrotic changes of AR, respectively. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs) and resolvin metabolites have anti-AR effects, but whether they are mediated through the arginase pathway is unclear. Our study intended to determine the effects of the ω-3 PUFAs eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), resolvin D1 (RvD1), TH1 cytokines, acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), cAMP, …

Doing “Care Work” In Emergency Service Calls, Angela Cora Garcia Jan 2022

Doing “Care Work” In Emergency Service Calls, Angela Cora Garcia

Natural & Applied Sciences Faculty Publications

Sending help when needed is a central role for emergency service call takers, but providing help during the call is also an important part of the job. The “care work” call takers do may assist callers with physical and emotional safety and enhance their resilience as they deal with ongoing emergencies prior to the arrival of the police. This conversational analytic study of a collection of 24 emergency telephone calls reveals the interactional techniques the call takers use to accomplish care work and shows how they integrate care work into their communication within the call.

Field Insurgency In Lifestyle Journalism: How Lifestyle Journalists Marginalize Instagram Influencers And Protect Their Autonomy, Gregory P. Perreault, Folker Hanusch

School of Advertising & Mass Communications Faculty Publications

While Facebook and Twitter have received significant scholarly attention for their role in shaping the journalistic field, Instagram has received sparse attention in comparison. The present study examines how lifestyle journalists (n = 63) from Austria and the United States perceive Instagram influencers operating in relation to the journalistic field. Instagram influencers, empowered by the digital medium, would seem to be in direct competition with lifestyle journalists in terms of content. Through the theoretical lenses of boundary work and field, this study argues that lifestyle journalists—long relegated to the periphery of the journalistic field—discursively leverage the presence of influencers …

“It’S Not Hate But … ”: Marginal Categories In Rural Journalism, Gregory P. Perreault, Ruth Moon, Jessica Fargen Walsh, Mildred F. Perreault

School of Advertising & Mass Communications Faculty Publications

Journalists who cover rural areas in the United States say they are afraid to report on hate groups, and this fear is exacerbated by close community ties and limited resources among rural journalists. We examine the concept of “hate speech” as a boundary object, analyzing in-depth interviews with U.S. journalists reporting in rural communities (n = 33) to better understand how rural journalists report on hate. We find that rural journalists articulate a clear definition for hate speech but struggle to apply that definition to events within their communities, even as they articulate numerous forms of hate. Journalists often dismissed …

What Does It Mean To Be A Female Character In “Indie” Game Storytelling? Narrative Framing And Humanization In Independently Developed Video Games, Mildred F. Perreault, Gregory P. Perreault, Andrea Suarez Jan 2022

What Does It Mean To Be A Female Character In “Indie” Game Storytelling? Narrative Framing And Humanization In Independently Developed Video Games, Mildred F. Perreault, Gregory P. Perreault, Andrea Suarez

School of Advertising & Mass Communications Faculty Publications

Video games have long held a spotty history in their narratives regarding women. Most research has examined large budget games and identified issues of simplification, oversexualization, and a general lack of agency among female characters. The present study explores the gaming niche of “indie”—or independent game developer—video games in their representations of women in particular with Never Alone, Gone Home, and Her Story. These games were released around the time frame of the GamerGate controversy—a controversy which drew attention to the treatment of women in gaming culture—and hence, the games are used to reflect on a potential shift in games …

Antagonistic Co-Contraction Can Minimize Muscular Effort In Systems With Uncertainty, Anne D. Koelewijn, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert Jan 2022

Antagonistic Co-Contraction Can Minimize Muscular Effort In Systems With Uncertainty, Anne D. Koelewijn, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Muscular co-contraction of antagonistic muscle pairs is often observed in human movement, but it is considered inefficient and it can currently not be predicted in
simulations where muscular effort or metabolic energy are minimized. Here, we investigated the relationship between minimizing effort and muscular co-contraction
in systems with random uncertainty to see if muscular co-contraction can minimize effort in such system. We also investigated the effect of time delay in the muscle, by varying the time delay in the neural control as well as the activation time constant. We solved optimal control problems for a one-degree-of-freedom pendulum actuated by two identical …

Articles

BACKGROUND: Circadian disruption has long been recognized as a symptom of Alzheimer's disease (AD); however, emerging data suggests that circadian dysfunction occurs early on in disease development, potentially preceding any noticeable cognitive deficits.

OBJECTIVE: This study compares the onset of AD in male and female wild type (C57BL6/J), transgenic (AβPP/PS1), and knock-in (APPNL-F/NL-F) AD mouse models from the period of plaque initiation (6 months) through 12 months.

METHODS: Rhythmic daily activity patterns, glucose sensitivity, cognitive function (Morris water maze, MWM), and AD pathology (plaques formation) were assessed. A comparison was made across sexes.

RESULTS: Sex-dependent hyperactivity in AβPP/PS1 mice was …

Is The Enneagram Compatible With The Catholic Faith?, Connie Burianek

Religious & Theological Studies Student Work

Within the past several years, the Enneagram of Personality’s popularity has increased significantly in terms of public attention. As a result, social media contains many “memes” primarily focusing on stereotypes of “9 personality types.” Like all stereotyping, this focus is often damaging from a psychological standpoint. Additionally, some have appropriated the material into a form of New Age Spirituality. Use of the Enneagram in this way has led to much suspicion and criticism of the Enneagram. In 2000, the US Bishops’ Secretariat for Doctrine and Pastoral Practices drafted A Brief Report on the Origins of the Enneagram (US bishop' Secretariat …

Neutrality Always Benefits The Oppressor: The Need To Rupture The Normalized Structure Of Teacher Education Programs To Diversify The Workforce, Zuhra Abawi, Ardavan Eizadirad

Education Faculty Publications

As faculties of education have undergone drastic changes to keep teacher education programs afloat while accommodating teacher candidates during a pandemic, much of these altercations are designed, much like the education system itself, to meet the needs of white, privileged students. Although many of the changes from classroom content, pedagogy, and assessment to alternative practicums are commendable in the face of a pandemic, BIPOC and teacher candidates from lower socioeconomic status, who are already underrepresented in the Ontario teacher workforce, are further disadvantaged due to existing inequities and opportunity gaps (Battiste, 2013; Colour of Poverty, 2019; Henry & Tator, 2012) …
