A Formative Evaluation Of Washington Prison Animal Programs, Kim Satterfield Jan 2022

A Formative Evaluation Of Washington Prison Animal Programs, Kim Satterfield

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Theses

With the ever-growing prison population in the United States, it is imperative to continue to examine programs that may foster reductions in recidivism rates. In the minimal observatory studies that have been conducted on animal programs in prison, it has been concluded that these programs have a positive effect on the inmates, prison environment, the animals, and the community. Implementations of these programs are in place nationwide, but thorough research and evaluation of methods and outcomes of these programs remain scarce. The purpose of this thesis is to gather data through interviews about the personal and community impacts of such …

Maximal Strength Training Increases Metabolic Energy Expenditure In Sedentary Adults Classified As Obese, Robert E. Anderson Iii Jan 2022

Maximal Strength Training Increases Metabolic Energy Expenditure In Sedentary Adults Classified As Obese, Robert E. Anderson Iii

Theses and Dissertations--Nutrition and Food Systems

Background: Metabolic adaptations reduce resting and non-resting energy expenditure to account for approximately 120 kcal/day. Weight loss promotes greater skeletal muscle efficiency, reducing the energy cost of physical activity and is correlated with declines in skeletal muscle glucose oxidation. Maximal Strength Training (MST) has the potential to upregulate glucose utilization and may offset these metabolic adaptations. Objective: To determine if MST offsets markers of metabolic adaptation by increasing resting and non-resting energy expenditure in sedentary individuals classified as obese. Methods: Five (5) participants (2 females, 3 males), ages 18-35 years, with obesity (BMI 30–45 kg/m2) were enrolled in an 8-week …

The 1950 Anta Production Of The Tower Beyond Tragedy, A Facsimile Edition: Part I, Introduction, James Karman

Jeffers Studies

The introduction to this two-part study provides an account of the 1950 staging of The Tower Beyond Tragedy, starring Judith Anderson. It contains information about the friendship between Jeffers and Anderson that occasioned the production, a description of the script used for the ANTA Playhouse performance in New York, and a summary of the critical response.

Part II of this study contains a photographic reproduction of the final script used for the 1950 production of The Tower Beyond Tragedy. As the only surviving record of that failed production, the facsimile reveals the changes made by Anderson and others to …

Plague Risk In The Western United States Over Seven Decades Of Environmental Change, Colin J. Carlson, Sarah N. Bevins, Boris V. Schmid Jan 2022

Plague Risk In The Western United States Over Seven Decades Of Environmental Change, Colin J. Carlson, Sarah N. Bevins, Boris V. Schmid

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

After several pandemics over the last two millennia, the wildlife reservoirs of plague (Yersinia pestis) now persist around the world, including in the western United States. Routine surveillance in this region has generated comprehensive records of human cases and animal seroprevalence, creating a unique opportunity to test how plague reservoirs are responding to environmental change. Here, we test whether animal and human data suggest that plague reservoirs and spillover risk have shifted since 1950. To do so, we develop a new method for detecting the impact of climate change on infectious disease distributions, capable of disentangling long-term trends (signal) and …

Springs Of New Jersey, Open-File Report 21-3, Ted Pallis, Steven E. Domber, Raymond Bousenberry, Rachel Filo, Kathleen Strakosch Walz, Brian Henning, Yaritza Acosta Caraballo, Meiyin Wu

New Jersey Center for Water Science & Technology Reports

New Jersey is home to many springs that provide drinking water, wildlife habitats, and recreational opportunities. Springs or areas of focused groundwater discharge are critically important headwater aquatic resources, sources of water to wetlands, and base flow in streams. They are an important part of the New Jersey landscape and help us understand the connection between groundwater and surface water and reflect the health of aquifers. They are also good indicators of shallow groundwater quality. Geologically, springs represent some of the most interesting locales available for study. The New Jersey Geological and Water Survey (NJGWS) and the Natural Heritage Program …

Transdermal Drug Delivery Systems: Analysis Of Adhesion Failure, Zachary Brooks, Tushar Goswami, Amy Neidhard-Doll, Tarun Goswami Jan 2022

Transdermal Drug Delivery Systems: Analysis Of Adhesion Failure, Zachary Brooks, Tushar Goswami, Amy Neidhard-Doll, Tarun Goswami

Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications

The most critical component of the TDDS is the adhesive, which is responsible for the safety, efficacy and quality of the patch. For drug delivery to successfully occur, the patch must adhere to the surface of the contact area. If a patch has inadequate adhesion, it is likely to fall off before the entire delivery period has been satisfied, leading to risks for the patient and others who may encounter the patch. Despite the critical concerns associated with the adhesive properties of the patches, the adhesion quality and failure mechanisms have not been fully studied. If certain molecules encounter the …

Effect Of The Extended Rigid Flapping Trailing Edge Fringe On An S833 Airfoil, Hongtao Yu, Zifeng Yang Jan 2022

Effect Of The Extended Rigid Flapping Trailing Edge Fringe On An S833 Airfoil, Hongtao Yu, Zifeng Yang

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

A 2D numerical simulation was conducted to investigate the effect of an extended rigid trailing edge fringe with a flapping motion on the S833 airfoil and its wake flow field, as an analogy of an owl’s wing. This study aims to characterize the influence of the extended flapping fringe on the aerodynamic performance and the wake flow characteristics downstream of the airfoil. The length (Le) and flapping frequencies (fe) of the fringe are the key parameters that dominate the impact on the airfoil and the flow field, given that the oscillation angular amplitude is fixed at 5◦. The simulation results …

Replication Stress Induced By The Ribonucleotide Reductase Inhibitors Guanazole, Triapine, And Gemcitabine In Fission Yeast, Mashael Yahya A Alyahya Jan 2022

Replication Stress Induced By The Ribonucleotide Reductase Inhibitors Guanazole, Triapine, And Gemcitabine In Fission Yeast, Mashael Yahya A Alyahya

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Replication stress can be produced by various exogenous or endogenous factors that perturb the movement of replication forks. To overcome the stress, the cells provoke the DNA replication checkpoint to mobilize several pathways to protect the forks, maintain genome integrity, and promote cell survival. Defects in the replication checkpoint cause forks collapse, leading to chromosomal DNA damage or cell death. Although the replication checkpoint is crucial for genome integrity in all eukaryotes, the underlying mechanisms remains to be fully understood. To investigate the mechanisms of DRC, hydroxyurea (HU), an established inhibitor of ribonucleotide reductase (RNR), has been widely used in …

The Role Of Action Potential Changes In Depolarization-Induced Failure Of Excitation Contraction Coupling In Mouse Skeletal Muscle, Xueyong Wang, Murad Nawaz, Chris Dupont, Jessica H. Myers, Steve R.A. Burke, Roger A. Bannister, Brent D. Foy, Andrew A. Voss, Mark M. Rich Jan 2022

The Role Of Action Potential Changes In Depolarization-Induced Failure Of Excitation Contraction Coupling In Mouse Skeletal Muscle, Xueyong Wang, Murad Nawaz, Chris Dupont, Jessica H. Myers, Steve R.A. Burke, Roger A. Bannister, Brent D. Foy, Andrew A. Voss, Mark M. Rich

Physics Faculty Publications

Excitation-contraction coupling (ECC) is the process by which electrical excitation of muscle is converted into force generation. Depolarization of skeletal muscle resting potential contributes to failure of ECC in diseases such as periodic paralysis, intensive care unit acquired weakness and possibly fatigue of muscle during vigorous exercise. When extracellular K+ is raised to depolarize the resting potential, failure of ECC occurs suddenly, over a narrow range of resting potentials. Simultaneous imaging of Ca2+ transients and recording of action potentials (APs) demonstrated failure to generate Ca2+ transients when APs peaked at potentials more negative than –30mV. An AP property that closely …

The concentrations of inorganic elements in soils of Saje, Ita-Oshin, Premier, and Oke-Diya dumpsites were determined using an X-Ray Fluorescence spectrometer to assess the soil quality through chronological changes with depths. A soil core sampler collects 56 samples at 20, 40, 60, and 80 cm depths. Saje showed high mean concentrations of Ca, K, Fe, Rb, and Ti at all depths, while Oke-Diya revealed high mean concentrations of Ca, K, Fe, Rb, Ti, Mn, Zn, V, Cr, and Ni at all depths. These concentrations were in a closed range suggesting a build-up of elements in the soil profiles. Oke-Diya had …

Occurrence Of Microplastics In The Asian Freshwater Environments: A Review, Farah Akmal Idrus, Noradriena Mohd Fadhli, Mohd Nasarudin Harith

Applied Environmental Research

Microplastics pollution has become a worldwide common problem. Despite the growing numbers in researches regarding the microplastics, the understanding of microplastics in the freshwater environment are still less. This paper overviews the present knowledge and findings on the occurrence of microplastics in water and sediment of the freshwater environments in Asia. The review also covers the size distribution, polymers, morphological characteristics and sources of microplastics to the freshwater systems. Perspective of the adsorption of heavy metals on the microplastics to the freshwater systems are also discussed in this review.

Can The Next Amazon Or Facebook Be Controlled Before It Becomes Too Powerful?, Ido Baum, Davida Lachman Messer

University of Memphis Law Review

Antitrust laws in the United States are at the center of a heated debate. Some scholars argue that antitrust should focus on price and output competition in a single market, with consumer welfare maximi-zation as the criterion for intervention. An emerging opposition, often categorized as the “neo-Brandeisian school,” argues that the original calling of antitrust was to restrain the political influence of corporate “bigness.” The latter criticize consumer-welfare antitrust for failing to capture the influence of concentrated economy-wide power held by individuals and corporations through their holdings in several mar-kets—the most notable examples being multi-market digital platforms such as Amazon, …

Ticks And Novel Chigger Mite Species On Passerine Birds In Southeastern Arizona, Kathleen Groschupf, James W. Mertins Jan 2022

Ticks And Novel Chigger Mite Species On Passerine Birds In Southeastern Arizona, Kathleen Groschupf, James W. Mertins

Arizona Birds

We document the combined occurrences of one immature tick species (Amblyomma cf. triste), 2 known chigger mite species, Euschoengastia numerosa and Neoschoengastia americana, and 4 undescribed species of Neoschoengastia chiggers attached to individuals of 11 bird species in southeastern Arizona. Groschupf incidentally discovered clusters of the orangecolored chiggers while examining migrant and local birds for Amblyomma cf. triste, a hard tick documented as uncommon and discontinuously widespread in southeastern Arizona, southern New Mexico, West Texas, and northwestern Mexico. All of these ectoparasite collection records are new for these particular bird host species in Arizona, and Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis) is …

The Shoe Is About To Drop For The Platform Economy: Understanding The Current Worker Classification Landscape In Preparation For A Changed World, Samantha J. Prince Jan 2022

The Shoe Is About To Drop For The Platform Economy: Understanding The Current Worker Classification Landscape In Preparation For A Changed World, Samantha J. Prince

University of Memphis Law Review

Whether a worker is an independent contractor or employee is of great significance in many countries, including the United States. This label drives whether a worker is entitled to many protections and ben-efits, including minimum wage, overtime, workers’ compensation, un-employment compensation, anti-discrimination protection, NLRA pro-tection, and more. The difficulty inherent in accurately classifying workers as either independent contractors or employees cannot be overstated. First, there are so many tests spanning all levels of our government. Second, there are so many ways that people work, and with the increased popularity of app-based work, classification be-comes even more difficult. Simply, some of …

Causal Narratives And Constitutional Scrutiny, Jeff Lingwall, Michelle Vos Jan 2022

Causal Narratives And Constitutional Scrutiny, Jeff Lingwall, Michelle Vos

University of Memphis Law Review

Courts engaged in constitutional scrutiny analysis often con-sider statistical evidence to link government ends and means. Courts and litigants generally rely on shallow reasoning when applying this evidence, particularly when causal relationships are at issue. We ar-gue that courts should increasingly adopt, and adapt, elements of causal reasoning developed in the social sciences. We propose a flex-ible framework for applying causal evidence in scrutiny analysis that parallels traditional tiers of constitutional scrutiny. This framework offers a Socratic-style narrative approach to causal evidence in scru-tiny analysis—one based on qualitative concepts that do not require specialized statistical training to apply. This expanded …
