Refusing Erasure: Nugent, Fire!!, And The Legacies Of Queer Harlem, Samantha King-Shaw Jan 2022

Refusing Erasure: Nugent, Fire!!, And The Legacies Of Queer Harlem, Samantha King-Shaw

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

This study examines the work of two queer Black artists, Richard Bruce Nugent and Marlon Riggs, within the historical and sociopolitical contexts of the Harlem Renaissance and cultural backlash of the late 1980s. Through comparative textual analyses, the author explores fluctuations of Black queer cultural production during the twentieth century and considers how each artist subverts dominant racist and heteronormative ideologies in mainstream society and Black communities. Engaging tools from the fields of critical race theory, queer theory, critical legal studies, and cultural representations of race and sexuality, the author analyzes “Smoke, Lilies and Jade” and Tongues Untied structurally and …

Review Of Spiders Of North America, By Sarah Rose, Michael L. Draney Jan 2022

Review Of Spiders Of North America, By Sarah Rose, Michael L. Draney

The Prairie Naturalist

A field guide to spiders, the dominant terrestrial predator group, has long been a desire for North American naturalists, biologists, and spider fans, but not surprisingly, the first “real” field guide has been a long time coming. The diversity of spiders, with over 50,000 known species globally (World Spider Catalog 2022) and around 4,000 in North America north of Mexico (Rose 2022), is well beyond the diversity of more traditional field guide targets such as birds (about 1,000 species north of Mexico; American Birding Association 2022) or butterflies (about 725 species north of Mexico; North American Butterfly Association 2022). Also, …

Bringing Order To Chaos: Reviving Uniformity And Balance Within Nebraska’S Rental Housing Laws, Ryan Sullivan Jan 2022

Bringing Order To Chaos: Reviving Uniformity And Balance Within Nebraska’S Rental Housing Laws, Ryan Sullivan

Nebraska Law Review

In 1973, the Nebraska Legislature was presented with the opportunity to adopt the Uniform Residential Landlord & Tenant Act (Uniform Act).1 The Uniform Act sought to “simplify, clarify, modernize, and revise the law governing rental of dwelling units and the rights and obligations of landlords and tenants” as well as improve the quality of housing, and make housing laws more uniform.2 The Unicameral delayed adoption for a year, and in the interim, that thoughtfullycrafted, balanced, and uniform set of proposed laws was eviscerated through one-sided amendments pushed through by landlord and real estate lobby groups (Real Estate Lobby).3 The final …

Second Twenty-Five Year Index: Volumes 26–50, 1994–2018, Jane E. Austin

The Prairie Naturalist

The first 50 years of the Prairie Naturalist reside on the shelves of libraries and personal collections. The articles and notes published over those years provide invaluable knowledge about Great Plains biota, communities, conservation, and landscape ecologies. Awareness of the wealth of information in those 50 print volumes has been limited, relying on references from other published papers or the limited number of articles that have been made available online by authors. This index serves as resource for individuals to digitally tap into the information published since 1994. This index, together with the first 25-year index, serves to complement the …

Being-In-Love: Kierkegaard And Existential Love, John Milkovich Jan 2022

Being-In-Love: Kierkegaard And Existential Love, John Milkovich

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

In this essay, I argue for an adaptation of Plato and Kierkegaard’s conceptions of love based on a style of analysis I call “existential analysis.” The existential analysis requires our conceptions of things to exclude any reference to view-from-nowhere concepts. Plato and Kierkegaard both make use of view-from-nowhere concepts in their theories of love. I argue that specific features of each of these theories–namely the pursuit for infinite beauty, the Absolute Paradox, and the other-self–can be removed from their respective view-from-nowhere concepts and reinterpreted to serve as a possible foundation for a future conception of love generally understood. Although Plato …

Introducing An H113a Mutation Into Atg10 Y73q To Reduce Autophagic Activity And Understand The Effect Of Atg On Autophagosome Size And Number, Konrad L. Lautenschlager Jan 2022

Introducing An H113a Mutation Into Atg10 Y73q To Reduce Autophagic Activity And Understand The Effect Of Atg On Autophagosome Size And Number, Konrad L. Lautenschlager

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Autophagy is an essential recycling process that occurs within eukaryotic cells, however, the individual functions of the current thirty-two known autophagic proteins are not yet entirely understood. At this time, it is known that the autophagic protein Atg7 works upstream of both Atg3 and Atg10. Atg3 is affected by Atg7 and allows for the attachment of Atg8 and the lipid PE which is part of the autophagosome membrane. The Atg10 pathway is also affected by Atg7 but attaches Atg12 to Atg5 which upregulates the function of Atg3 and ultimately Atg8 lipidation. These protein interactions are necessary for forming autophagosomes, large …

Bioarchaeology Of The Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Through Bioarchaeology Of Care Model, Cassandra Anderson Jan 2022

Bioarchaeology Of The Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Through Bioarchaeology Of Care Model, Cassandra Anderson

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) is caused by compression of the nerves of the brachial plexus leading to paresthesia, muscle and bone atrophy, and pain in the affected arm. TOS can be identified on the skeleton through multiple skeletal indicators such as cervical ribs or bone atrophy. The lack of identification of TOS in bioarchaeological remains limits the amount of knowledge that can be gained from archeological populations in relation to social care and respect for physically disabled individuals. This study explores bioarchaeological evidence of TOS, including evidence of prehistoric medical procedures and community support to the disabled. Novel differential diagnoses …

Legacy Halogenated Organic Contaminants In Urban-Influenced Waters Using Passive Polyethylene Samplers: Emerging Evidence Of Anthropogenic Land-Use-Based Sources And Ecological Risks, Wenlu Zhao, Minggang Cai, David Adelman, Mohammed Khairy, Yan Lin, Zhiheng Li, Huijun Liu, Rainer Lohmann Jan 2022

Legacy Halogenated Organic Contaminants In Urban-Influenced Waters Using Passive Polyethylene Samplers: Emerging Evidence Of Anthropogenic Land-Use-Based Sources And Ecological Risks, Wenlu Zhao, Minggang Cai, David Adelman, Mohammed Khairy, Yan Lin, Zhiheng Li, Huijun Liu, Rainer Lohmann

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Legacy halogenated organic pollutants, including organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), remain ubiquitous in the environment and continue to pose potential (eco-)toxicological threats because of their ongoing releases from land-based sources. This study investigated the spatial trends of freely dissolved PCBs and OCPs by polyethylene passive samplers, and provided evidence of their land-use-based sources and ecological risk in an urbanized estuary area of Narragansett Bay. Dissolved Σ29PCB concentrations ranged from 0.01 to 1.37 ng L−1, and exhibited higher concentrations in the upper, more urban/built-up watershed, and in north coastal areas. Major inputs of PCBs were …

Thereby Hangs A Tail: Creation And Procreation In Medieval Werewolf Romances, Vicki Blud Jan 2022

Thereby Hangs A Tail: Creation And Procreation In Medieval Werewolf Romances, Vicki Blud

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

How do you make a werewolf? Moreover, who makes a werewolf, and why? In medieval romance, the latter questions are often the more pressing, since the transformation of man into wolf is connected less with lunar phases than with human interference—especially the intervention of an unfaithful wife. Following in the pawprints of Marie de France’s lai of Bisclavret, these romances are noted for their “courtly” wolves and antifeminist slant, but they also offer unusual perspectives on procreation. While in Aristotelian thought the generative principle was broadly associated with the male partner, the male werewolf of medieval romance is most often …

How Is Pelagic Sargassum-Associated Biodiversity Assessed? Insights From The Literature, Kristie S.T. Alleyne Jan 2022

How Is Pelagic Sargassum-Associated Biodiversity Assessed? Insights From The Literature, Kristie S.T. Alleyne

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Over the past decade unprecedented blooming of pelagic Sargassum has occurred across the Equatorial Atlantic from West Africa to the Caribbean. Although pelagic Sargassum mats are considered beneficial in the open ocean, providing valuable habitat for a diverse array of endemic and associated species, they also inundate coastal areas and cause a plethora of management challenges for fisheries, tourism, nearshore coastal ecosystems, public health and the socioeconomic welfare of coastal communities. In—water harvesting has been suggested as a desirable management solution to prevent shoreline inundation, but destruction of the associated biodiversity is a concern with this approach and has not …

Does Co-Speech Gesture Support Children’S Analogical Reasoning? An Investigation Into The Differential Effects Of Gesture On Learning, Katharine F. Guarino Jan 2022

Does Co-Speech Gesture Support Children’S Analogical Reasoning? An Investigation Into The Differential Effects Of Gesture On Learning, Katharine F. Guarino

Dissertations

Although the general consensus is that gesture supports learning across a wide range of learning contexts, nuances to gesture’s effects are found across the gesture-for-learning literature. The purpose of this body of research was to advance our understanding of gesture’s effect on learning. Specifically, we explored the utility of gesture in a domain that had not been considered in the gesture literature previously: analogical reasoning (Study 1). We aimed to understand whether gesture supports children’s analogical reasoning ability and why gesture might support this type of reasoning. Specifically, we investigated whether gesture could support learning through directing visual attention, thereby …

Deep Deification: Soteriology For A World In Ecological Crisis, Kathleen Mcnutt Jan 2022

Deep Deification: Soteriology For A World In Ecological Crisis, Kathleen Mcnutt

Dissertations

What might an adequate soteriology look like for a world in ecological crisis? This dissertation constructively addresses this problem at the intersection of contemporary ecofeminist theology and Patristic soteriologies of theosis or deification. I examine ecofeminist soteriologies, drawing on the work of Rosemary Radford Ruether, Sallie McFague, and Elizabeth Johnson in particular, and deification soteriologies, especially that of Maximus the Confessor, arguing that each of these trajectories offers both fruitful possibilities for a reconstruction of soteriology but that each also raises some problems. In bringing these two trajectories into conversation, I suggest directions for a constructive theology of salvation that …

Digging For Information: Investigating The Efficacy Of Tracking And Augmenting Lacunicambarus Nebrascensis For Endangered Dragonfly Conservation, Danielle Elaine Tesar Jan 2022

Digging For Information: Investigating The Efficacy Of Tracking And Augmenting Lacunicambarus Nebrascensis For Endangered Dragonfly Conservation, Danielle Elaine Tesar

Dissertations and Theses

Restoration and preservation of habitat for threatened and endangered species can proceed in many ways. Augmentation strategies can be used to supplement threatened and endangered populations or the species and resources on which those imperiled species depend. Comprehensive knowledge of species movement and home range is necessary to formulate effective augmentation plans. For freshwater burrowing crayfish, this type of information is generally lacking. The studies reported here were designed to acquire detailed information that is essential for augmentation of the plains devil crayfish, Lacunicambarus nebrascensis (formerly, Cambarus diogenes). Although L. nebrascensis populations are not considered threatened, this crayfish provides vital …

Acute-Lps Mediated Myelin Injury, Gideon Stone Jan 2022

Acute-Lps Mediated Myelin Injury, Gideon Stone

School of Biomedical Sciences Theses

Background: Multiple Sclerosis is a notorious neurological disease strongly linked to auto-immune pathogenesis and involvement of inflammatory cytokines, resulting in CNS white matter injury. To date, there is no known cure and a limited number of successful treatments, with the exact pathogenic mechanisms of the disease being unknown. Due to this there is a high demand for the development of effective treatments. With the primary use of anti-inflammatory treatments, the symptoms can be significantly reduced, and the occurrence of relapses and exacerbations can be managed. The use of animal models such as EAE and cuprizone has helped drastically with the …

Would Earth Law Change The Face Of Environmental Law In England?, Hetty Summerhayes Jan 2022

Would Earth Law Change The Face Of Environmental Law In England?, Hetty Summerhayes

Plymouth Law Review

This article aims to compare Environmental Law in England with the established body of Earth Law which currently exists internationally. It provides an analysis of English Law as it applies to marine protection, environmental permitting and wildlife conservation and critically analyses whether they are doing enough to ensure a conservationist regime. Further, it explores the Earth Law movement and how it might influence and change the application of Environmental Law in England. Particular attention is paid to academics and writers such as Christopher Stone, Rachel Carson and Cormac Cullinan. Examining the shift we as human beings must take from an …

The Critically Reflective Practicum, Aaron Stoller Jan 2022

The Critically Reflective Practicum, Aaron Stoller

Honors in Practice Online Archive

A defining feature of honors education is meaningful engagement within and across disciplines, yet significant challenges for creating and sustaining meaningful transdisciplinary research remain. One such challenge involves a nuanced understanding of a discipline, or what educational researchers call “disciplinary literacy.” This article introduces critically reflective practicum (CRP) as a pedagogy for developing disciplinary literacy among honors students. CRP acknowledges forms of inquiry as design situations and seeks to simulate instructional scaffolding so that students both experience and reflect on their questioning. Through the practicum, students begin to understand, engage with, and critique the methods and sociocultural standards of one …

The Green Police In The Golden State: An Analysis Of The Criminal Enforcement Of Environmental Law In The State Of California, Joshua Ozymy, Melissa Jarrell Ozymy

UC Law Environmental Journal

The use of criminal enforcement tools is necessary for deterring and punishing environmental offenses involving significant harm or culpable conduct. Yet we have very limited empirical knowledge of how the criminal enforcement of environmental laws has functioned historically in the Golden State. Through content analysis of prosecution summaries for every federal criminal investigation undertaken by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the State of California that led to criminal prosecution, 1983-2019, we are able to provide a comprehensive account of what laws are violated, how prosecutors charge environmental criminals, and how these criminals are sentenced, illustrating broader themes in …

Police Agencies On Facebook Overreport On Black Suspects, Ben Grunwald, Julian Nyarko, John Rappaport

Articles

A large and growing share of the American public turns to Facebook for news. On this platform, reports about crime increasingly come directly from law enforcement agencies, raising questions about content curation. We gathered all posts from almost 14,000 Facebook pages maintained by US law enforcement agencies, focusing on reporting about crime and race. We found that Facebook users are exposed to posts that overrepresent Black suspects by 25 percentage points relative to local arrest rates. This overexposure occurs across crime types and geographic regions and increases with the proportion of both Republican voters and non-Black residents. Widespread exposure to …
