Accelerometry Reveals Hidden Variation In The Movement Response Of Timber Rattlesnakes (Crotalus Horridus) To Roadways, Anna F. Tipton, Morgan L. Thompson, Dominic L. Desantis
Graduate Research Showcase
Roadways are among the most widespread and disruptive anthropogenic land use features that influence the behavior and movement of wildlife. Negative impacts including vehicle-induced mortality, habitat destruction and fragmentation, and creating barriers to movement have been well documented across taxa, but the fine scale behavioral impact of roadways on smaller, cryptic species has yet to be directly examined. Using a novel integration of emerging spatial analyses and tri-axial accelerometry, we quantified spatial and temporal aspects of movement and space use in order to investigate the coarse and fine scale influence of roadways on the movement patterns of Timber Rattlesnakes (Crotalus …

A Sweet Way To Increase The Metabolic Activity And Migratory Response Of Wound-Related Cells: Deoxy-Sugar Incorporated Natural Polymeric Fibres As A Potential Bioactive Wound Patch, Serkan Di̇ki̇ci̇
Turkish Journal of Biology
The selection of a wound dressing is crucial for successful wound management. Conventional dressings are preferable for the treatment of simple wounds. However, a bioactive wound dressing that supports wound management and accelerates the healing process is required when it comes to treating non-self-healing wounds. 2-deoxy-D-ribose (2dDR) is a small deoxy sugar that naturally occurs in human body. Although we have previously demonstrated that 2dDR can be used to induce neovascularisation and accelerates wound healing in vitro and in vivo, the literature on small sugars is conflicting, and the knowledge on how 2dDR achieves its biological activity is very limited. …
The Transfer Of Neurotoxic Bmaa From Cyanobacterial Blooms In Province Lake, Nh Food Chain, Michelle B. Verstraaten
The Transfer Of Neurotoxic Bmaa From Cyanobacterial Blooms In Province Lake, Nh Food Chain, Michelle B. Verstraaten
Center for Freshwater Biology
Cyanobacteria blooms are an increasing problem worldwide. Current studies are focusing on the cyanotoxins produced, their transfer across the food web, bioaccumulations, and the resulting effects on humans and wildlife. In the summer of 2019, the body of a five-week-old Common Loon was found on Province Lake, New Hampshire. As cyanobacterial blooms had been observed on the lake, we investigated whether cyanotoxins could be a possible underlying cause for the death of the chick, and possible sources of transfer. A necropsy was performed to learn whether and at what levels the neurotoxin BMAA was detectable in the loon. Samples of …
A Portfolio Approach To Policymaking Uncertainty, Matthew C. Turk
A Portfolio Approach To Policymaking Uncertainty, Matthew C. Turk
Florida State University Law Review
This article examines a basic dilemma that appears across nearly all areas of the law: what is the appropriate regulatory response to uncertainty in the policymaking environment, where the costs, benefits, and other consequences of any particular legal intervention are difficult to predict, and often equally difficult to measure after the fact? Although a vast theoretical literature addresses that question, the existing scholarship almost uniformly seeks to identify a single policy rule or procedure that is most robust to uncertainty. This article takes a fundamentally different approach. By drawing on the leading theory of financial investment under uncertainty-Modern Portfolio Theory-it …
Adorno, Beckett…Wagner, Artaud: Reflections On Stefan Sorgner’S Philosophy Of Posthuman Art, Russell Kilbourn
Adorno, Beckett…Wagner, Artaud: Reflections On Stefan Sorgner’S Philosophy Of Posthuman Art, Russell Kilbourn
English and Film Studies Faculty Publications
This essay reflects on the question of posthuman(ist) art by way of Stefan Sorgner’s book, Philosophy of Posthuman Art, which makes an important initial contribution to the nascent investigation of the significance of creative and imaginative expression from a critical posthumanist perspective. From the understanding that we cannot (yet) do without the subject as ground of the self, I elaborate a theory of the dynamic ‘subjective trinity’ (self, other, and transcendent subject) underpinning the occidental aesthetic experience construed in visual-spatial terms, exemplified in the cinema. From this basis I explore two possible avenues of posthumanist aesthetic expression: First, the secular …

A Retrospective Analysis Of Ebola Virus Disease In Liberia, Matthew Jeremiah Matson
A Retrospective Analysis Of Ebola Virus Disease In Liberia, Matthew Jeremiah Matson
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) centered in the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone from 2013-2016 was the longest and largest such outbreak on record. At least 30,000 cases were reported, and the outbreak lasted nearly two-and-a-half years. Despite the progress made during and since that time, many questions remain unanswered. The studies here utilize a large set of nearly 750 whole blood samples from patients that were triaged and treated at the ELWA-3 Ebola treatment unit in Monrovia, Liberia in 2014 and 2015. Viral load, as approximated by qRT-PCR diagnostic assays in the field, …

Prevalence Of Ticks And Tick-Borne Pathogens In Mined Land Areas Of Southeast Kansas, Sydney Nippoldt, Hallee Belgium, Cassady Utley, Ayushee Dasgupta, Anuradha Ghosh
Posters
Ticks serve as vectors for many disease-causing pathogens, particularly bacterial and rickettsial pathogens. Diseases such as Lyme, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis, Rickettsiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and Tularemia can result after bitten by ticks. These tick-borne diseases are more common in the Great Plains region than is recognized. The present study aimed to conduct a three-year long surveillance on various tick species in the mined land area in Cherokee County (KS) using dry ice bait as well as flag-drag technique. Over several visits (June 2020 – November 2021) to the collection site, ticks were collected using both trapping methods. Detailed environmental data …

Remember that family trees are a type of network. The network we create helps us understand which traits were passed down and who they came from. While humans can inherit traits like hair color and eye shape, sometimes they can inherit genetic diseases or be more likely to develop health issues because of their genetics. In most cases, inherited traits are based on probability, so tracing family networks can tell us how likely people are to have these types of diseases. When tracing the genealogical flow of relatedness from one generation to the next one or two generations, it is …

Repeated Exposure To Chlorpyrifos Is Associated With A Dose-Dependent Chronic Neurobehavioral Deficit In Adult Rats, Ana C. R. Ribeiro, Elisa Hawkins, Fay M. Jahr, Joseph L. Mcclay, Laxmikant Deshpande
Neurology Publications
Organophosphate (OP) chemicals include commonly used pesticides and chemical warfare agents, and mechanistically they are potent inhibitors of the cholinesterase (ChE) enzyme. Epidemiological studies report long-term neuropsychiatric issues, including depression and cognitive impairments in OP-exposed individuals. Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is one of the most widely used pesticides worldwide. Multiple laboratory studies have reported on either the long-term behavioral effect of an acute high-dose CPF (30-250 mg/kg) or studied sub-chronic behavioral effects, particularly the motor and cognitive effects of repeated low-dose CPF. However, studies are lacking on chronic mood and depression-related morbidities following repeated CPF doses that would mimic occupationally relevant OP …
Radiant Sites: Projection And The Mobile Spectator In Contemporary Moving-Image Installations, Taylor Hobson
Radiant Sites: Projection And The Mobile Spectator In Contemporary Moving-Image Installations, Taylor Hobson
Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines contemporary moving-image installations that use projected images to expand and elaborate upon the cinematic experience. It focuses on works by Douglas Gordon (b. 1966), Jim Campbell (b. 1956), and the partnered artists Janet Cardiff (b. 1957) and George Bures-Miller (b. 1960), all of whom have reconfigured the classical cinematic system of viewing since the 1990s. Through their works, I trace the term “expanded cinema” as a literal extension of projected light from the screen into the open gallery and beyond. I argue that the term “projection” – as thrown light, mental anticipation, and moving bodies – brings …

To document our Louisiana culture through stories for young children and to give an authentic voice on how a child truly feels. Writing a children’s chapter booked based on my own personal experience with Louisiana culture allows me to dive into the mindset of a young child today and show a part of my childhood growing up in a little town, north of the famous I-49, Carencro, Louisiana. The town of blue and gold, as one might say. For me this town is more than a pinpoint on a map, it’s my home, where all my memories and adventures reside …

The purpose of this story is to document real Louisiana stories for young children. There are so many young students in Louisiana, and it is very important that these children experience storytelling that expresses their own culture. True Louisiana culture is very different from lots of the stereotypes that are shown in most Louisiana literature. I feel it is important for young students to read about real Louisiana culture. I would classify this book as a true story based on my childhood where I spent lots of time at my grandparent’s house with my sister and my cousins. This is …

The Best Lunch Yet, Kimberly Fontenot
Department of Educational Curriculum and Instruction
The purpose for writing this story is to share a very important part of my culture, because it is important to be the voice of the Louisiana children that they can relate to. I want the Creole and Cajun little boys and girls to feel seen and accurately represented. As a Creole child growing up in Louisiana, I cannot remember a time where I had the feeling “Wow, they are just like me!” or, “I know that place, I’ve been there!” Nothing written in/about Louisiana resonated with me, which is a genuine issue. Louisiana literature does not have to portray …

Olympia, Wilderness, And Consumption In Laird Barron’S Old Leech Cycle, John Glover
Olympia, Wilderness, And Consumption In Laird Barron’S Old Leech Cycle, John Glover
VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
This book chapter considers the cosmic horror fiction of Laird Barron through a blended ecocritical/postcolonial lens, focusing on its representation of the Pacific Northwest and Olympia, Washington. Wilderness and consumption are both strongly represented concepts in Barron’s Old Leech Cycle of stories, aligning with colonial perceptions of the American West as a largely unpeopled space ripe for exploitation. The eldritch horrors of these tales align with well-established traditions in weird fiction, and they are also perfectly suited to locations historically identified with resource extraction.
