Neural Plasticity For Speech Sound Processing In Adults: The Effect Of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation, Garrett Sweitzer

Theses and Dissertations

We examined the possible modulatory effect of tDCS on the automatic processing of speech sounds by evaluating the components of two ERP waveforms (P1-N1-P2 and T-Complex. The P1-N1-P2 components were measured at frontocentral sites F3, F4, C3, C4, Cz, and Fz while the T-Complex components were measured at temporal cortices T7 and T8. A 64-channel sensor cap from Electrical Geodesics, Inc was placed on each of the participants’ scalp. The 17 young adults (12 females, 5 males) sat comfortably during the EEG measurements within an electrically shielded and sound-attenuated booth while watching a silenced movie with subtitles delivered through a …

King Jesus Saves Radio: A Case Study Of New Technology In Early Christian Fundamentalism, Steven Classen Jan 2022

King Jesus Saves Radio: A Case Study Of New Technology In Early Christian Fundamentalism, Steven Classen

Faculty Publications - Department of Communication and Cinematic Arts

Scholars have argued that history provides ample evidence of the eager embrace of new communication technologies by Christian fundamentalists and evangelicals in the United States. However, closer examination of the first Christian fundamentalist venture into the technology of radio in the US reveals the ambivalence and anxieties of key leaders as they considered and adopted use of the new medium. This study, based on careful analysis of archival and press materials from the 1920s, reveals a “restless” adoption of radio that articulated the “menace” as well as the promise of the technology. While wondering aloud about radio’s shortcomings and dangers, …

Towards Water Literacy: An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of Standards For Teaching And Learning About Humans And Water, Silvia‑Jessica Mostacedo‑Marasovic, Brooke Colleen Mott, Holly White, Cory T. Forbes

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Water is critical to sustain human existence. Water literacy involves understanding the interactions within and between natural and human dimensions of water systems to support informed decision-making, an important outcome for learners of all ages. It is therefore critical to foster water literacy in today’s global citizens, particularly through formal education. The purpose of this study, in tandem with a parallel study focusing on natural dimensions of water systems (Mostacedo-Marasovic et al., in press), is to examine water-related K-12 standards for teaching and learning about human dimensions of water systems to develop a comprehensive and transdisciplinary perspective on water education. …

Seasonal Variation In Terrestrial Invertebrate Subsidies To Tropical Streams And Implications For The Feeding Ecology Of Hart’S Rivulus (Anablepsoides Hartii), David C. Owens, Thomas N. Heatherly, Kent M. Eskridge, Colden V. Baxter, Steven A. Thomas Jan 2022

Seasonal Variation In Terrestrial Invertebrate Subsidies To Tropical Streams And Implications For The Feeding Ecology Of Hart’S Rivulus (Anablepsoides Hartii), David C. Owens, Thomas N. Heatherly, Kent M. Eskridge, Colden V. Baxter, Steven A. Thomas

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Terrestrial invertebrates are important subsidies to fish diets, though their seasonal dynamics and importance to tropical stream consumers are particularly understudied. In this year-round study of terrestrial invertebrate input to two Trinidadian headwater streams with different forest canopy densities, we sought to (a) measure the mass and composition of terrestrial inputs with fall-in traps to evaluate the influences of seasonality, canopy cover, and rainfall intensity, and; (b) compare terrestrial and benthic prey importance to Anablepsoides hartii(Hart’s Rivulus), the dominant invertivorous fish in these streams, by concurrently measuring benthic and drifting invertebrate standing stocks and the volume and composition of …

Kachman, Kyusang Lim, John C.S. Harding, Michael K. Dyck, Frederic Fortin, Graham S. Plastow, Piggen Canada Research Consortium, Jack C.M. Dekkers

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Infectious diseases cause tremendous financial losses in the pork industry, emphasizing the importance of disease resilience, which is the ability of an animal to maintain performance under disease. Previously, a natural polymicrobial disease challenge model was established, in which pigs were challenged in the late nursery phase by multiple pathogens to maximize expression of genetic differences in disease resilience. Genetic analysis found that performance traits in this model, including growth rate, feed and water intake, and carcass traits, as well as clinical disease phenotypes, were heritable and could be selected for to increase disease resilience of pigs. The objectives of …

Burn wounds are frequently encountered health problems, which need a new treatment approach especially in terms of good patient compliance. Availability of use of antioxidant agents and bio-adhesive gels in tissue healing can be an alternative as a new approach for wound healing. Antioxidant taurine containing bio-adhesive gels were prepared by using carbopol (CP) 940 and 934. Rheological and texture analyses were carried out on bio-adhesive gels for in vitro characterization. Wound model on Wistar rats was used to evaluate the in vivo evaluation of gels. Rheological and texture analyses showed that a carbopol bioadhesive gel has acceptable topically use …

Paleoethnobotanical Investigation Of Pre-Columbian Archaeological Site 8br158, Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida., Jennifer I. Moreno Palacios

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Starch grain residue analysis was conducted on 18 artifacts collected in 2021 from the archaeological site 8BR158 on the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. This paleoethnobotanical analysis investigates plant use by the pre-historic inhabitants of the Central Coast of Florida where there is a lack of archaeobotanical research. The starches recovered from the archaeological artifacts were studied in order to identify plants used for culinary and/or medicinal purposes. Wild plants commonly found in Florida, such as acorn (Quercus), were identified in this study that were used for food resources. Domesticated plants such as maize and beans were also …

Inhibitory Effects Of Cannabinoids On Acetylcholinesterase And Butyrylcholinesterase Enzyme Activities, Tess Puopolo, Chang Liu, Hang Ma, Navindra P. Seeram

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Introduction: Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) are two cholinergic enzymes catalyzing the reaction of cleaving acetylcholine into acetate and choline at the neuromuscular junction. Abnormal hyperactivity of AChE and BChE can lead to cholinergic deficiency, which is associated with several neurological disorders including cognitive decline and memory impairments. Preclinical studies support that some cannabinoids including cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) may exert pharmacological effects on the cholinergic system, but it remains unclear whether cannabinoids can inhibit AChE and BChE activities. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the inhibitory effects of a panel of cannabinoids including CBD, Δ8-THC, cannabigerol (CBG), cannabigerolic …

How Should Inheritance Law Remediate Inequality?, Felix B. Chang Jan 2022

How Should Inheritance Law Remediate Inequality?, Felix B. Chang

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

This Essay argues that trusts and estates (“T&E”) should prioritize intergenerational economic mobility—the ability of children to move beyond the economic station of their parents—above all other goals. The field’s traditional emphasis on testamentary freedom fosters the stickiness of inequality. For wealthy settlors, dynasty trusts sequester assets from the nation’s system of taxation and stream of commerce. For low-income decedents, intestacy splinters property rights and inhibits their transfer, especially to nontraditional heirs.

Holistically, this Essay argues that T&E should promote mean regression of the wealth distribution curve over time. This can be accomplished by loosening spending in ultrawealthy households and …

Reclaiming Safety: Participatory Research, Community Perspectives, And Possibilities For Transformation, Janet Moore Jan 2022

The Expanded Inhibitor Of Apoptosis Gene Family In Oysters Possesses Novel Domain Architectures And May Play Diverse Roles In Apoptosis Following Immune Challenge, Erin M. Witkop, Dina A. Proestou, Marta Gomez-Chiarri

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Apoptosis plays important roles in a variety of functions, including immunity and response to environmental stress. The Inhibitor of Apoptosis (IAP) gene family of apoptosis regulators is expanded in molluscs, including eastern, Crassostrea virginica, and Pacific, Crassostrea gigas, oysters. The functional importance of IAP expansion in apoptosis and immunity in oysters remains unknown.

Results: Phylogenetic analysis of IAP genes in 10 molluscs identified lineage specific gene expansion in bivalve species. Greater IAP gene family expansion was observed in C. virginica than C. gigas (69 vs. 40), resulting mainly from tandem duplications. Functional domain analysis of oyster …

Schooling On The East-West Divide: Educational Weaponization During The Final Phase Of The Cold War, Sophia Sahm Jan 2022

Schooling On The East-West Divide: Educational Weaponization During The Final Phase Of The Cold War, Sophia Sahm

Political Science Honors Projects

During the Cold War, the United States and Soviet Russia focused on spreading their distinctive ideologies across the globe, and in doing so, came in direct competition with one another. In this study, I employ content analysis of two major U.S. and Soviet education reports and reforms from 1983 to 1991, namely A Nation at Risk and Fundamental Directions of General and Vocational School Reform, to explore and illustrate how the two states wielded their youth as weapons in a battle for ideological supremacy. My findings add nuance to the conversation surrounding education as a method of state control.

Utilizing Game-Based Learning To Promote Mental Health Advocacy In Black And Brown Communities, Ashlyn Stewart, Tracey L. Moore, Hira Roberts Jan 2022

Utilizing Game-Based Learning To Promote Mental Health Advocacy In Black And Brown Communities, Ashlyn Stewart, Tracey L. Moore, Hira Roberts

Pursue: Undergraduate Research Journal

The aim of this project was to explore the effectiveness of video games and game-based learning as a means of mental health advocacy within People of Color (POC) and their communities. Research has shown that within black and brown communities, a heightened stigma is attached to the discussion of mental health, often preventing those who are affected from seeking treatment. This unwillingness to accept and care for mental illness within communities of color is highly detrimental, especially in the context of conditions such as Alzheimer’s or dementia, where African-Americans and Hispanics are at a significantly higher risk of developing these …

Network Science: Ecology, Worlds Of Connections Sepa

Worlds of Connections Resources

Building a network using wooden blocks demonstrates that some pieces in a network are more important than others. Removing pieces of a network will change the structure, but removing the pieces that are most connected or more foundational to the network will have more significant impacts on the network. In an ecosystem network, the more connected the network, the more robust it is. Think about ecosystems and food webs as networks with varying degrees of robustness depending upon how many connections and kinds of connections they contain (e.g. if there are “hubs” or “key links” in the chain). In an …
