Artificial Intelligence In Dentistry, Orthodontics And Orthognathic Surgery: A Literature Review, Tania Arshad Siddiqui, Rashna Hoshang Sukhia, Dinaz Ghandhi

Section of Dental-Oral Maxillofacial Surgery

Artificial intelligence is the ability of machines to work like humans. The concept initially began with the advent of mathematical models which gave calculated outputs based on inputs fed into the system. This was later modified with the introduction of various algorithms which can either give output based on overall data analysis or by selection of information within previous data. It is steadily becoming a favoured mode of treatment due to its efficiency and ability to manage complex conditions in all specialities. In dentistry, artificial intelligence has also popularised over the past few decades. They have been found useful for …

Impact Of Culture Media Composition, Nutrients Stress And Gamma Radiation On Biomass And Lipid Of The Green Microalga, Dictyochloropsis Splendida As A Potential Feedstock For Biodiesel Production, Sanaa Mahmoud Metwally Shanab, Mervat Aly Mohamed Abo-State, Hamdy Elsayed Ahmed Ali

Baghdad Science Journal

Biodiesel production from microalgae depends on the biomass and lipid production. Both biomass and lipid accumulation is controlled by several factors. The effect of various culture media (BG11, BBM, and Urea), nutrients stress [nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), magnesium (Mg) and carbonate (CO3)] and gamma (γ) radiation on the growth and lipid accumulation of Dictyochloropsis splendida were investigated. The highest biomass and lipid yield of D. splendida were achieved on BG11 medium. Cultivation of D. splendida in a medium containing 3000 mg L−1 N, or 160 mg L−1 P, or 113 mg L−1 Mg, or 20 mg L-1 CO3, led to …

Retina Based Glowworm Swarm Optimization For Random Cryptographic Key Generation, Alaa Noori Mazher, Jumana Waleed

Baghdad Science Journal

The biometric-based keys generation represents the utilization of the extracted features from the human anatomical (physiological) traits like a fingerprint, retina, etc. or behavioral traits like a signature. The retina biometric has inherent robustness, therefore, it is capable of generating random keys with a higher security level compared to the other biometric traits. In this paper, an effective system to generate secure, robust and unique random keys based on retina features has been proposed for cryptographic applications. The retina features are extracted by using the algorithm of glowworm swarm optimization (GSO) that provides promising results through the experiments using the …

Morphometric And Structural Analysis Of Florida Manatee Spermatozoa, Jonathan R Cowart, Danielle M Collins, Daniel L Stanton, Gerhard Van Der Horst, Iskande V Larkin

Staff and Researcher Publications

Sperm characteristics, such as sperm morphology and sperm morphometry are important in assessing sperm quality. This is especially important for the management and conservation of endangered and exotic species, like the Florida manatee, where information of this nature is extremely limited. In this study, we fill this knowledge gap to better understand the reproductive physiology of Florida manatees by conducting the first extensive analysis of sperm morphometry and ultrastructure. Sperm were retrieved from the vas deferens of nine recently deceased Florida manatees. Computer-aided sperm morphology analysis (CASMA) was used for morphometric analysis and laser-scanning confocal microscopy and electron microscopy were …

Recent Insights Into The Role Of Glia And Oxidative Stress In Alzheimer’S Disease Gained From Drosophila, Lindsey D Goodman, Hugo J Bellen Feb 2022

Recent Insights Into The Role Of Glia And Oxidative Stress In Alzheimer’S Disease Gained From Drosophila, Lindsey D Goodman, Hugo J Bellen

Duncan NRI Faculty and Staff Publications

Here, we discuss findings made using Drosophila on Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk and progression. Recent studies have investigated the mechanisms underlying glia-mediated neuroprotection in AD. First, we discuss a novel mechanism of glial lipid droplet formation that occurs in response to elevated reactive oxygen species in neurons. The data suggest that disruptions to this process contribute to AD risk. We further discuss novel mechanistic insights into glia-mediated Aβ42-clearance made using the fly. Finally, we highlight work that provides evidence that the aberrant accumulation of reactive oxygen species in AD may not just be a consequence of disease but contribute to …

Protein Phosphatase 2a Restrains Dlk Signaling To Promote Proper Drosophila Synaptic Development And Mammalian Cortical Neuron Survival, Margaret Hayne, Aaron Diantonio Feb 2022

Protein Phosphatase 2a Restrains Dlk Signaling To Promote Proper Drosophila Synaptic Development And Mammalian Cortical Neuron Survival, Margaret Hayne, Aaron Diantonio

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) is a major cellular phosphatase with many protein substrates. As expected for a signaling molecule with many targets, inhibition of PP2A disrupts fundamental aspects of cellular physiology including cell division and survival. In post-mitotic neurons, the microtubule associated protein Tau is a particularly well-studied PP2A substrate as hyperphosphorylation of Tau is a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. Although many cellular targets are likely altered by loss of PP2A, here we find that activation of a single pathway can explain important aspects of the PP2A loss-of-function phenotype in neurons. We demonstrate that PP2A inhibits activation of the neuronal …

Duloxetine (DLX) is a dual serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, widely used for the treatment of major depressive disorder. Although DLX has shown good efficacy and safety, serious adverse effects (e.g., liver injury) have been reported. The mechanisms associated with DLX-induced toxicity remain elusive. Drug metabolism plays critical roles in drug safety and efficacy. However, the metabolic profile of DLX in mice is not available, although mice serve as commonly used animal models for mechanistic studies of drug-induced adverse effects. Our study revealed 39 DLX metabolites in human/mouse liver microsomes and mice. Of note, 13 metabolites are novel, including five …

Weiner, Billie Cullison, Shailesh V. Date, Tomáš Tyml, Jean Marie Volland, Tanja Woyke, Laura A. Katz, Robin S. Sleith

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Symbiotic relationships between heterotrophic and phototrophic partners are common in microbial eukaryotes. Among Arcellinida (Amoebozoa) several species are associated with microalgae of the genus Chlorella (Archaeplastida). So far, these symbioses were assumed to be stable and mutualistic, yet details of the interactions are limited. Here, we analyzed 22 single-cell transcriptomes and 36 partially-sequenced genomes of the Arcellinida morphospecies Hyalosphenia papilio, which contains Chlorella algae, to shed light on the amoeba-algae association. By characterizing the genetic diversity of associated Chlorella, we detected two distinct clades that can be linked to host genetic diversity, yet at the same time show a biogeographic …

Heterogeneous Biodiesel Catalyst From Steel Slag Resulting From An Electric Arc Furnace, Mai H. Roushdy Feb 2022

Heterogeneous Biodiesel Catalyst From Steel Slag Resulting From An Electric Arc Furnace, Mai H. Roushdy

Chemical Engineering

Biodiesel is one of the most environmentally friendly and renewable fuels, as it is a non-polluting fuel and is made from living resources, such as vegetable oils. The steel industry generates a variety of solid wastes, including electric arc furnace slag (EAFS). The synthesis of biodiesel from waste sunflower cooking oil was examined in this study, utilizing EAFS as a catalyst, which mainly contains ferric and ferrous oxides, calcium oxide, and silica. To evaluate their impact on biodiesel production, four independent variables were chosen: temperature (50–70 ◦C), catalyst loading (1–5%), methanol-to-oil (M:O) molar ratio (5–20), and time (1–4 h). The …

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Quantitative systems pharmacology (QSP) modeling is applied to address essential questions in drug development, such as the mechanism of action of a therapeutic agent and the progression of disease. Meanwhile, machine learning (ML) approaches also contribute to answering these questions via the analysis of multi-layer ‘omics’ data such as gene expression, proteomics, metabolomics, and high-throughput imaging. Furthermore, ML approaches can also be applied to aspects of QSP modeling. Both approaches are powerful tools and there is considerable interest in integrating QSP modeling and ML. So far, a few successful implementations have been carried out from which we have learned about …
