IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the precision and accuracy of the Pampa Corte and National Research Council (2007; NRC) models for predicting forage intake (FI) by sheep. Individual data (n = 213) of observed FI, body weight and chemical composition of consumed diet were taken from fifteen indoor digestibility trials conducted with male sheep housed in metabolic cages and fed only forage ad libitum. The diets were composed of tropical grasses, temperate grasses and legumes. Individual observations of FI were averaged by treatment (n = 32) into each experiment which were then compared to FI …

Pasture Utilization At Islands In Northern Norway, V. Lind, Ø. Holand, F.-A. Haugen, G. Steinheim Feb 2022

Pasture Utilization At Islands In Northern Norway, V. Lind, Ø. Holand, F.-A. Haugen, G. Steinheim

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The Norwegian sheep industry is based on utilization of “free” rangeland pasture resources. Use of mountain pastures is dominating, with about two million sheep grazing these pastures during summer. Regional challenges related to e.g., loss of sheep to large carnivores make farmers think differently. The Norwegian coastline is among the longest globally and is scattered with islets and islands. Alone along the coast of Nordland county, it is estimated more than 14,000 islands. Use of islands for summer pasture is an alternative but there is a limited knowledge about such a management system. In this study, we examined lambs’ average …

Participatory Evaluation Of Urochloa And Megathyrsus Forage Species In Western Kenya: Farmers Perspective, Ruth Odhiambo, Solomon Mwendia, David Mwangi, Alfred Juma, An Notenbaert

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Despite western Kenya potential in dairy production, it has lagged behind compared to other regions in the country. This comes against growing per capita milk consumption in Kenya currently estimated at 120 litres per person per year. As a result, western Kenya is largely net importer of milk from neighbouring counties albeit the possibility improving productivity within. Among the most prevalent constraint to increased productivity is limited forage quality and quantity throughout the year. Napier stunting disease, which suppresses forage production from Napier grass, the most prevalent cultivated forage in western Kenya, exacerbates this. To contribute to addressing the problem, …

Microbial Population And Fermentation Characteristics Of Total Mixed Ration Prepared With Local Feed Resources In Mozambique, Y. Cai, Z. Du, S. Yamasaki, D. Nguluve, F. Macome, T. Oya

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

To effectively utilize locally available feed resources for dairy cattle in Africa, fermented total mixed ration (TMR) was prepared using Napier grass, corn meal, wheat bran, formula feed, and mineral and vitamin mix. The fermentation quality of TMR were analyzed after 14 days of ensiling. Before ensiling, aerobic bacteria were the dominant bacteria, after ensiling, lactic acid bacteria counts increased rapidly and became the dominant bacteria in TMR. After 14 days of ensiling, aerobic bacteria, coliform bacteria, yeasts, and molds showed lower (P < 0.05) counts in TMR than those before ensiling. The dry matter (DM) of TMR was adjusted to 45.50%, their crude protein and neutral detergent fiber contents were approximately 11.48, and 55.25% of DM, respectively. After 14 days of ensiling, TMR fermented to a good quality, the pH was reduced to 3.90; the lactic acid and ammonia nitrogen contents were 1.01 and 0.31% of FM, respectively; the propionic acid and butyric acid were too low to detect. The results confirm that fermented TMR prepared with local feed resources can attain a good quality in Africa.

Ontogenetic Drivers Of Morphological Evolution In Monitor Lizards And Allies (Squamata: Paleoanguimorpha), A Clade With Extreme Body Size Disparity, Carlos J. Pavón-Vázquez, Damien Esquerré, J. Scott Keogh

Publications and Research

Background

Heterochrony, change in the rate or timing of development, is thought to be one of the main drivers of morphological evolution, and allometry, trait scaling patterns imposed by size, is traditionally thought to represent an evolutionary constraint. However, recent studies suggest that the ontogenetic allometric trajectories describing how organisms change as they grow may be labile and adaptive. Here we investigated the role of postnatal ontogenetic development in the morphological diversification of Paleoanguimorpha, the monitor lizards and allies, a clade with extreme body size disparity. We obtained linear and geometric morphometric data for more than 1,600 specimens belonging to …

Evidence For The Oxidation Of Earth’S Crust From The Evolution Of Manganese Minerals, Daniel R. Hummer, Joshua J. Golden, Grethe Hystad, Robert T. Downs, Ahmed Eleish, Chao Liu, Jolyon Ralph, Shaunna M. Morrison, Michael B. Meyer, Robert M. Hazen

Publications

Analysis of manganese mineral occurrences and valence states demonstrate oxidation of Earth’s crust through time. Changes in crustal redox state are critical to Earth’s evolution, but few methods exist for evaluating spatially averaged crustal redox state through time. Manganese (Mn) is a redox-sensitive metal whose variable oxidation states and abundance in crustal minerals make it a useful tracer of crustal oxidation. We find that the average oxidation state of crustal Mn occurrences has risen in the last 1 billion years in response to atmospheric oxygenation following a 66 ± 1 million-year time lag. We interpret this lag as the average …

The Triple Linguistic Heritage In Tanzania: Opportunities And Challenges Feb 2022

The Triple Linguistic Heritage In Tanzania: Opportunities And Challenges

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Colonial history exposes Tanzania to triple linguistic heritage, that has at times plunged the nation into linguistic confusion. This heritage involves Kiswahili, ethnic community languages (ECLs) and English. Whereas each of the languages has been limited to some use through policies, some of the languages have pushed their own way, often breaking policy boundaries. It is shown in this paper that, firstly, the exclusion of ECLs by post independence policies has denied the nation important socio-cultural and economic avenues that could foster rapid social and economic development. Secondly, policies have not succeeded to strictly confine the three languages to some …

The Aoc In The Age Of Covid—Pandemic Preparedness Planning In The Federal Courts, Zoe Niesel

St. Mary's Law Journal

The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic created a crisis for American society—and the federal courts were not exempt. Court facilities came to a grinding halt, cases were postponed, and judiciary employees adopted work-from-home practices. Having court operations impacted by a pandemic was not a new phenomenon, but the size, scope, and technological lift of the COVID-19 pandemic was certainly unique.

Against this background, this Article examines the history and future of pandemic preparedness planning in the federal court system and seeks to capture some of the lessons learned from initial federal court transitions to pandemic operations in 2020. The Article begins by …

Characterization Of Testis-Derived Mesenchymal Cells And The Hunt For Universal Stemness Markers, Myret Ghabriel

Theses and Dissertations

Mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent cells residing in multiple tissues with the capacity for self-renewal and differentiation into various cell types. Due to the myriad sources of MSCs the International Society for Cellular Therapy (ISCT) proposed certain criteria for their characterization. Here, we isolate adult MSCs from mouse testes and demonstrate that these testis-derived MSCs (tMSCs) follow some of the ISCT’s criteria. tMSCs expressed the MSCs surface markers CD44, CD73, and CD29 and lacked the expression of the hematopoietic cell marker CD45. Moreover, the cells displayed the capacity for self-renewal and in vitro differentiation into adipocytes. Since the isolation …

Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) defy the central dogma by representing a family of RNA molecules that are not translated into protein but can convey information encoded in their DNA. Elucidating the exact function of ncRNA has been a focus of discovery in the last decade and remains challenging. Nevertheless, the importance of understanding ncRNA is apparent since these molecules regulate gene expression at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional level exerting pleiotropic effects critical in development, oncogenesis, and immunity. NcRNAs have been referred to as "the dark matter of the nucleus", and unraveling their role in physiologic and pathologic processes will provide vast …

The extension of life span driven by 40% caloric restriction (CR) in rodents causes trade-offs in growth, reproduction, and immune defense that make it difficult to identify therapeutically relevant CR-mimetic targets. We report that about 14% CR for 2 years in healthy humans improved thymopoiesis and was correlated with mobilization of intrathymic ectopic lipid. CR-induced transcriptional reprogramming in adipose tissue implicated pathways regulating mitochondrial bioenergetics, anti-inflammatory responses, and longevity. Expression of the gene Pla2g7 encoding platelet activating factor acetyl hydrolase (PLA2G7) is inhibited in humans undergoing CR. Deletion of Pla2g7 in mice showed decreased thymic lipoatrophy, protection against age-related inflammation, …

The Effects Of Rosiglitazone On Task Specific Anxiety-Like Behavior And Novelty Seeking In A Model Of Chronic Adolescent Unpredictable Stress, Hannah Sexton, Nathan A. Olszewski, Mary-Louise Risher

Biomedical Sciences

Adolescence is characterized as a period of increased social behavior, risk taking, and novelty seeking, partly due to ongoing maturation in critical brain areas and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) negative-feedback system. During this period there is heightened vulnerability to stress that can drive neuro-immune-endocrine remodeling, resulting in the emergence of maladaptive behaviors that increase susceptibility to alcohol and substance abuse. Here we used a rat model to investigate the impact of chronic adolescent unpredictable stress on a battery of behavioral measures to assess anxiety, novelty seeking, risk taking, depression, and voluntary ethanol consumption while determining whether the PPARγ agonist rosiglitazone can …

Summer Distribution And Day Roost Characteristics Of Eastern Small-Footed Bats (Myotis Leibii) In West-Central Arkansas, Valerie Marie Kearny

Student Theses and Dissertations

Information on summer distribution and diurnal roosting is lacking for the imperiled, rock-roosting Myotis leibii, a species threatened by habitat loss and White-nose Syndrome. I aimed to 1) identify diurnal, summer roost locations in the greater Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas, and 2) determine roost habitat characteristics at the local, landscape, and roost-level scales. Using acoustic monitoring, rock searches, mist-netting, and temperature monitoring in 2019 and 2020, I found M. leibii in an aggregated distribution across the landscape roosting either solitarily or in small groups in the Rich Mountain-Black Fork Mountain, Mount Magazine, and Mount Nebo areas under sparse canopy cover, …
