The Contribution Of Environmental Education To Dismantling An Increasingly Dysfunctional Environmental Attitude, Jenna Patricia Santacroce Apr 2022

The Contribution Of Environmental Education To Dismantling An Increasingly Dysfunctional Environmental Attitude, Jenna Patricia Santacroce

Honors Theses

In part one, this thesis explains how a widespread environmental attitude, which is that it is permissible for humans to dominate the Earth, originated in early human history and remains prevalent today. This “domination attitude” is accompanied by American physical and social structures, otherwise referred to as provisioning systems, which largely constitute a current, prominent paradigm. This paradigm is leading to irreversible environmental degradation which adversely impacts all life on Earth. In part two, this thesis claims that this trajectory can be effectively diverted through a paradigm shift, one where the domination attitude is abandoned, humans pursue a more harmonious …

Diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DIPGs) are aggressive pediatric brain tumors, and patient survival has not changed despite many therapeutic efforts, emphasizing the urgent need for effective treatments. Here, we evaluated the anti-DIPG effect of the oncolytic adenovirus Delta-24-ACT, which was engineered to express the costimulatory ligand 4-1BBL to potentiate the antitumor immune response of the virus. Delta-24-ACT induced the expression of functional 4-1BBL on the membranes of infected DIPG cells, which enhanced the costimulation of CD8+ T lymphocytes. In vivo, Delta-24-ACT treatment of murine DIPG orthotopic tumors significantly improved the survival of treated mice, leading to long-term survivors that developed …

The Chinese Copyright Dream, Sean A. Pager, Eric Priest Apr 2022

The Chinese Copyright Dream, Sean A. Pager, Eric Priest

Pepperdine Law Review

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s vision of the “Chinese Dream” has captured the popular imagination. As a slogan, the Chinese Dream is intentionally broad. Intended to inspire rather than prescribe, it captures diverse aspirations including dreams of material prosperity, environmental sustainability, national rejuvenation, and global leadership. The Dream’s ramifications continue to ricochet through state policy echelons and lend themselves to competing interpretations. In that spirit, we advance a modest suggestion: that the Chinese Dream should be, at least in part, a dream about copyright law. A more effective copyright system would bolster China’s creative industries, generating a diverse supply of high-quality …

The Long And Winding Road To Effective Copyright Protection In China, Peter K. Yu Apr 2022

The Long And Winding Road To Effective Copyright Protection In China, Peter K. Yu

Pepperdine Law Review

In November 2020, China adopted the Third Amendment to the Copyright Law, providing a major overhaul of its copyright regime. This Amendment entered into effect on June 1, 2021. The last time the regime was completely revamped was in October 2001, when the Copyright Law was amended two months before China joined the World Trade Organization. While U.S. policymakers and industry groups have had mixed reactions to the recent Amendment, the new law presents an opportunity to take stock of the progress China has made in the copyright reform process. This Article begins by mapping the long and winding road …

Loyola Lakeshore Campus Food Forest Proposal, Molly Bittner, Nina Connor Apr 2022

Loyola Lakeshore Campus Food Forest Proposal, Molly Bittner, Nina Connor

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the feasibility of growing a food forest on Loyola’s lakeshore campus to serve both as an experiment in sustainable agriculture, and to raise awareness to the rest of the Loyola and surrounding non-Loyola community about the importance of sustainable agriculture and food sovereignty. A food forest is a low-maintenance, perennial, and sustainable agroforestry system aimed at plant-based food production. It is based on a woodland ecosystem with layers including underground/fungal, groundcover, herbaceous, shrub, mid canopy, and full canopy layers. A food forest provides a sustainable and efficient way of restoring soil and …

Investigations Into The Mechanism Of Energy Transfer Between Aromatic Microplastics And Pollutants During Photolysis, Hannah M. Olson Apr 2022

Investigations Into The Mechanism Of Energy Transfer Between Aromatic Microplastics And Pollutants During Photolysis, Hannah M. Olson

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Microplastic pollution is of concern to the environment because toxic compounds can concentrate on the surface of microplastic particles and be ingested by aquatic animals, resulting in the absorbed toxins to be spread throughout the food chain to humans. Past research has demonstrated that triclosan, an emerging contaminant being studied, will undergo photolysis at a faster rate on the surface of plastics that do not absorb sunlight such as polyethylene and polymethylmethracrylate than it does in water with no plastic present. We are interested in investigating if and how light energy is transferred between triclosan and aromatic plastics. We found …

Vertical Stratification Of Mammals In The Amazon, Jesus Mucio Leal, John Resener Apr 2022

Vertical Stratification Of Mammals In The Amazon, Jesus Mucio Leal, John Resener

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

The Madre de Dios region of Peru is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world. It is home to many endemic species that have populated all the layers of the rainforest. Increased human encroachment has impacted the distribution of fauna in the region. During a week-long study at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica, mammal species and their vertical stratification were recorded. Through field observations and a camera trap, 13 species of mammals were identified in all the layers of the forest but the emergent layer. The primate order was identified the most and the canopy layer held the most mammals. …

Climate Change And Racial Violence, Aidan Connors

Bryant University Undergraduate Journal

Climate change poses the greatest threat mankind has ever seen, not since WW2 is the damage potential so great for humanity. Humanity’s understanding of the dangers that climate change presents isn’t something new, newspaper archives show articles warning about the dangers of carbon output into the atmosphere as early as 1912 (Roney and Otamatea). Despite our knowledge of the dangers, the actions necessary to fight climate change aren’t being taken because of the risk to profits it presents for companies.

Investigation of the adenosine A(2A) receptor on the enhanced rewarding effects of nicotine and dopamine D2 receptor signaling in a novel heritable model of drug abuse vulnerability

Seth E. Turney, Loren D. Peeters, Olivia A. Jennings, Liza J. Wills, Russell W. Brown

Many years ago, our laboratory along with a collaborator established that neonatal treatment of the dopamine (DA)D2-like receptor agonist quinpirole (NQ) to rats induces an increase in DAD2 receptor sensitivity throughout the animal’s lifetime, which has validity to schizophrenia (SZ) and a number of clinical conditions. These clinical conditions, which include SZ but also bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, …

The Effects Of A High Caloric Diet And Ctrp3 Over-Expression On The Myometrium Of The Mouse Uterus, Cori Gilmer, Allan Forsman Phd Apr 2022

The Effects Of A High Caloric Diet And Ctrp3 Over-Expression On The Myometrium Of The Mouse Uterus, Cori Gilmer, Allan Forsman Phd

Appalachian Student Research Forum

One of the major healthcare issues found almost worldwide, especially in the United States, is the obesity epidemic. Obesity is known to have deleterious effects on many body/organ systems. C1q TNF-related protein-3 (CTRP3) is effective at preventing high-fat diet-induced fatty liver. With these two factors taken into consideration, this study explores the possible effects of a high caloric diet on the muscle wall of the uterus, i.e., the myometrium, and how over-expression of CTRP3 may modify those effects. We hypothesize that consumption of excessive amounts of fat and sugar will have detrimental effects on the dual layers of the mouse …

Transforming Creativity Skills Into Creative Habits, Bethlem Clavijo Boronat, Halim Choueiry

Arab Economic and Business Journal

In a constantly changing and uncertain word, the creative capability is a key skill, not only for professional and personal success, but for survival. Educational systems have traditionally treated creativity as a marginal component of educational programs and, when it has been taught, it has been done in the focus of tools and techniques more than on building a solid creative base for students. This paper analyses the situation of the present-day creativity teaching in Higher Education and determines the key capabilities that allow the students to build a solid creative personality. After that, the paper offers a range of …

Docosahexaenoic Acid May Reduce Risk Factors Of Cancer Development In A Mouse Model Of Colitis-Associated Colorectal Cancer, Eliza Stewart, Marcus Hayden Apr 2022

Docosahexaenoic Acid May Reduce Risk Factors Of Cancer Development In A Mouse Model Of Colitis-Associated Colorectal Cancer, Eliza Stewart, Marcus Hayden

Student Research Symposium

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most prevalent cancers worldwide and has increased incidence in developed countries. There is a close link between CRC and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). A main symptom of IBD is colitis, which is inflammation of the colon. Diet plays a key role in the development of CRC, specifically a Western-type diet, which is characterized by energy dense and nutrient deficient foods. This dietary pattern is associated with both increased inflammation and dysbiosis of the gut microbiome, two factors that contribute to the development of CRC. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid that …

Rules Of Engagement: Copyright And Automated Gatekeepers' Influence On Creative Expression, Michael W. Carroll Apr 2022

Rules Of Engagement: Copyright And Automated Gatekeepers' Influence On Creative Expression, Michael W. Carroll

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This Essay turns questions about artificial intelligence and copyright law around. Rather than focus on algorithms as potential authors, this Essay argues for more attention to the role of algorithms as gatekeepers on social media and how creators adapt their creative choices to meet the demands of these automated tastemakers. Using TikTok’s “For You” algorithm and its role in breaking Lil Nas X’s hit song “Old Town Road” as a case study, this Essay poses the question whether algorithmic gatekeeping is simply a difference in degree or a difference in kind from an artist’s perspective. While tentative, this Essay concludes …

Importance Of A Dietary Cation-Anion Difference In Peripartum Dairy Cows, Laura A. Motsinger, Jacob Hadfield Apr 2022

Importance Of A Dietary Cation-Anion Difference In Peripartum Dairy Cows, Laura A. Motsinger, Jacob Hadfield

All Current Publications

At calving, nutrient requirements of dairy cows increase to support milk synthesis. Energy and protein requirements are increased at the initiation of lactation (Moore et al., 2000). Additionally, calcium requirements increase tremendously to meet the demands of lactation (Moore et al., 2000). Calving and subsequent milk synthesis can cause calcium concentrations in the blood to drop. When the demand for calcium exceeds the cow’s ability to mobilize calcium, hypocalcemia (low blood calcium) occurs, which can negatively impact production. This fact sheet reviews hypocalcemia in dairy cows and how to implement hypocalcemia prevention strategies.
