The evolutionary success of angiosperms has been largely influenced by their interactions with animal pollinators, which provide pollen and gene transport between individuals, populations, and young diverging species. Here, I examine the interplay between interspecific pollen transfer (IPT) by shared pollinators, gene flow, and the evolution of reproductive isolation in the young rapid radiation of Neotropical bat-pollinated bellflowers in the genus Burmeistera (Campanulaeae: Lobelioideae). In Chapter 1, I conducted an extensive review of the pollination and plant speciation literature to highlight the evolutionary consequences of IPT in angiosperms and showed that it has profound consequences for the evolution of floral …

The Main Aspects Of The Development And Historical And Chronological Features Of Translated Lexicography In Uzbekistan, Sohib Salimovich Sharipov
Scientific reports of Bukhara State University
Background. Among the Eastern Slavs, the first dictionaries were called lexicons, alphabets or interpretations - they were mainly collections of foreign and obsolete words. One of the first glossaries was the Pilot's Book (1282) - a translation dictionary in which 174 Old Russian, Greek and Old Slavonic words were interpreted. In 1596, Lavrentiy Zizaniy Tustanovsky compiled the first printed dictionary “Lexis, that is, the sayings are briefly collected from the Slovenian language”, as an appendix to the “Slavic-Russian Primer”. Thus, we have briefly decided on the word dictionary and its origin. The dictionary, as mentioned above, is the object of …

Introduction. Man has always sought to know the structure of the universe, the laws of the development of what it contains, and phenomena. In the process of cognition, there are three cases when a person suddenly, by chance, information is needed to make a quick decision in a limited environment, making his own decision "in advance", "exactly as it is necessary to do". One such case we call intuition.Intuition is a complex phenomenon of cognition, a specific way of generating real knowledge. A long period in science came when the mechanism of intuitive cognition was not known. For this reason, every kind …

Skeletal muscle is the largest metabolic organ in the body, and its metabolic flexibility is essential for maintaining systemic energy homeostasis. Metabolic inflexibility in muscles is a dominant cause of various metabolic disorders, impeding muscle development. In our previous study, we found lncRNA ZFP36L2-AS (for "ZFP36L2-antisense transcript") is specifically enriched in skeletal muscle. Here, we report that ZFP36L2-AS is upregulated during myogenic differentiation, and highly expressed in breast and leg muscle. In vitro, ZFP36L2-AS inhibits myoblast proliferation but promotes myoblast differentiation. In vivo, ZFP36L2-AS facilitates intramuscular fat deposition, as well as activates fast-twitch muscle phenotype and induces muscle atrophy. Mechanistically, …

Roles Of Phospholipase Dε In Arabidopsis And Soybean Response To Nitrogen Deficiency, Shuaibing Yao
Roles Of Phospholipase Dε In Arabidopsis And Soybean Response To Nitrogen Deficiency, Shuaibing Yao
Dissertations
Phospholipase D (PLD) hydrolyzes phospholipids to produce phosphatidic acid (PA) and plays important roles in plant growth, development, and stress response. Of 12 PLDs in Arabidopsis, PLDε is involved in nitrogen response in Arabidopsis and canola, but the mechanism remained elusive. This study was undertaken to investigate how PLDε mediates plant response to nitrogen availability. Nitrogen deficiency induces an increase in PLDε transcript and protein levels and an increased association with intracellular membranes. PLDε interacts with autophagy-related protein 8e (ATG8e), and two of the four predicted ATG8-interacting motifs in PLDε are required for PLDε-ATG8e interactions. PLDε hydrolyzes phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) conjugated …

Roadway-Associated Culverts May Serve As A Transmission Corridor For Pseudogymnoascus Destructans And White-Nose Syndrome In The Coastal Plains And Coastal Region Of Georgia, Usa, Kelly E. Lutsch, Ashley G. Mcdonald, Kyle T. Gabriel, Christopher T. Cornelison
KIP Articles
White-nose syndrome (WNS) is a disease among hibernating North American bats caused by the psychrophilic fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans. Since its discovery in New York state, US, in 2006, and as of 2020, WNS has rapidly spread to 34 American states and seven Canadian provinces, causing precipitous declines of native bat populations across North America. The rapid spread of this fungal pathogen has been facilitated by the social behavior of bats, as well as the ability of subterranean hibernacula to support a favorable environment for P. destructans, and is probably exacerbated by anthropogenic transmission events. Although many bat species roost in …

Trophic Ecology Of A Dominant Mesopredatory Fish Family (Alepisauridae) In The Western North Atlantic Revealed By Stomach Content And Stable Isotope Analysis, Ellyn Willse
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
The mesopelagic zone of the ocean is gaining increased notice due to its potential for commercial value and the lack of knowledge of its ecosystems. Lancetfishes, Alepisaurus spp., are large mesopelagic predators and common bycatch species in commercial fishing operations that potentially play a role in connecting epipelagic and mesopelagic waters and may be a source of carbon from near the surface to the mesopelagic. While little is known about the behavior and biology of Lancetfishes, they share many food sources, and are themselves a food source for important commercial fisheries species such as tuna and swordfish. This study examines …

Ketogenic diets are characterized by a reduction in carbohydrates and relative increase in the proportions of proteins and fats. Research on the ketogenic diet (KD) as a potential treatment option for many conditions such as Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) are currently being studied. Binge drinking, intermittent and heavy use of alcohol, is associated with increased problem and risk-taking behaviors, and is often a precursor of AUD. Therefore, a non-invasive diet-based therapeutic intervention to reduce binge drinking could be useful. In the present study, we aimed to investigate if introduction of KD will decrease alcohol consumption in mice. The hypothesis was …

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a Gram-negative, opportunistic pathogen that commonly causes nosocomial pneumonia, urinary tract infection, and septicemia. Our recent work utilizing a murine model of respiratory tract infection with classical K. pneumoniae demonstrated leukocyte aggregates in the lungs of mice at 28 days postinfection. Here, we sought to characterize the composition and development of these structures. Histopathological analyses of murine lungs revealed immune cell clusters surrounding the pulmonary vasculature and airways by 14 days postinfection, resembling inducible bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue (iBALT). Further investigation of these structures demonstrated central B cell aggregates with concomitant dispersed T cells. At day 28 postinfection, …

Biodiversity (biological diversity) refers to the diversity of all life on Earth, including ecosystems and species. Currently, 36 areas globally are classified as biodiversity hotspots, defined as a region that contains high biodiversity levels that are also threatened by human population and development. The specific requirements for this classification follow two criteria: it hosts 1,500 endemic vascular plants, and at most 30% of its area is covered in original native vegetation present. This research maps the history of biodiversity hotspots with respect to changes in human population and land use from 1000 to 2000 CE. Results show that the biodiversity …

Myrmarachne formicaria is a species of ant-mimicking jumping spider native to Eurasia that was first noticed in the United States in 2001. These spiders get their name from their ant-like body forms and movement of their two forelegs to appear like antennae. They are also sexually dimorphic, with the males having enlarged chelicerae (jaws) that extend out from the front of their face. Males that encounter each other engage in displays that include faceoffs (facing one another and pacing back and forth), putting their abdomens to the side, opening their chelicerae, and even attacking/jabbing at one another. These male displays …

GREAT Day Posters
Deforestation is increasingly associated with the transmission of zoonotic viruses, such as Malaria in South America and Ebola in Africa. Increasing rates of deforestation may cause viral transmission to accelerate. In this study, I asked how deforestation and other factors may interact to affect transmission of Yellow Fever virus. For example, deforestation in areas with higher precipitation may have different effects on animal hosts and mosquito vectors of the Yellow Fever virus compared to areas with lower precipitation. In addition, more densely-populated countries could have increased transmission compared to less densely-populated countries. Also, the ability to successfully treat viral transmission …

The MHC Class I protein plays a critical role in the immune system of Xenopus laevis. This protein functions in the determination between self and non-self. The MHC Class I protein is an important immune gatekeeper identifying foreign pathogens and ensuring that infected cells are killed by CD8 T cells. Also, it’s important to ensure that normal cells are not attacked by the immune system. In Xenopus laevis, it has been shown that MHC Class I molecules are found active in adult frogs, but have not been detected in tadpoles even though they are immunocompetent. We are interested to see …
