Signal Intelligence And Macarthur's Use Of Military Intelligence (G-2) During The Second World War, James Walter Zobel

Though signal intelligence significantly benefited MacArthur 's conduct of military operations during the Second World War, each of his campaigns from July 1942 to August 1945 was marred by his reliance on inaccurate intelligence provided by his G-2 organization. An examination of the production and use of intelligence during MacArthur's campaigns displays these mixed aspects of his use of intelligence. Historical analysis shows MacArthur made effective use of signal intelligence, and despite instances of his reliance on inaccurate estimates the result was never disastrous. This thesis investigates how the United States Navy, with assistance from the Army and Coast Guard, utilized the various aspects of antisubmarine warfare to protect, the Chesapeake Bay and the maritime trade within the Fifth Naval District from the menace of Germany's U-boats during World War II. The details of how these efforts began and were carried out are described.

This thesis compares the effectiveness of three Americans who led major guerrilla groups against the Japanese in the Philippine Islands during World War II. It is limited to Wendell Fertig on Mindanao, James Cushing on Cebu, and Russell Volckmann on Luzon. Previous works addressed only individual leaders; this thesis compares different leaders.

The thesis concludes that although differences did exist in how each individual officer rose to command, all three were effective in leading resistance efforts against the Japanese. The topic of my paper is involved and multifaceted. It deals with well-known organizations and names such as the Rote Kapelle, Dulles and the OSS, Schellenberg, and the Abwehr, but it concentrates on the role that Switzerland played in the field of intelligence during World War II. Due to the volume of materials on almost every aspect of my topic it will not be possible to present more than an overview of the main themes and a glimpse at the issues that have challenged historians over the last forty years.

This paper traces the changes in the attitudes and policies of the United States towards the Southeast Asian country of Thailand during the Second World War. From a position of indifference the United States assumed an active role in the emergence of Thailand as a sovereign nation at the conclusion of the war, encouraging pro-American factions and opposing a traditional power of the area, Great Britain.

This article closely studies the predominantly British military strategy of the Allied forces in 1942 and 1943. It examines the characteristics of, the reasons behind, and the consequences of these strategies, as well as the reasons why the policies changed in the latter part of 1943. Shortly after the attack at Pearl Harbor, Churchill met with the Americans to determine how to proceed. The effect of war upon existing bilateral treaties of belligerents is one of the unsettled problems of international law. The problem is to determine whether a bilateral treaty (between nations at peace) which does not provide for the eventuality of war, will be suspended or annulled by a subsequent war between them. The idea that war is a complete destruction of the international intercourse which was represented by the treaty logically would lead to the conclusion that the treaty ends ipso facto when war comes. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese made their sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, and the United States was at war. This marked the second time within a quarter of a century, and the fifth time in the history of the University, that war clouds hovered over the United States. During World War I, the University vacated its new campus (the present site) in favor of the United States War Department. The campus and all of the buildings were used for hospital purposes.
