Chickens are a key source of nutrition for rural Malagasy communities. Due to high endemic rates of Newcastle disease, it remains challenging to raise sustainable chicken flocks as a consistent food source. Here, we explore the impact of triannual Newcastle disease virus (NDV) vaccine interventions on the growth and herd immunity acquisition of Malagasy chicken flocks. Between 2011 and 2018 we collected longitudinal data to assess the population dynamics of chicken populations in remote Malagasy communities. In 2016, we launched a pilot campaign for vaccination in six rural communities to determine the impacts on chicken survivorship and productivity. We used …

Emergence Of Human Immunoprofiling In Health And Disease, Bhagirath Singh Aug 2019

Emergence Of Human Immunoprofiling In Health And Disease, Bhagirath Singh

Microbiology & Immunology Publications

The human immune system is critical for maintaining health and providing protection from infectious diseases and cancer. Major advances in our understanding of the immune system have largely emerged from studies using animal models such as mice. However, this mouse-centric research has also limited our ability to comprehend the human immune system and how it changes with age and disease state. The fact that we have yet to define what constitutes a normal human immune system has hampered our ability to diagnose, treat, and prevent many human diseases. Immunoprofiling that measures the frequency of human immune cells based upon their …

Mathematical Modeling Of Vaccinations: Modified Sir Model, Vaccination Effects, And Herd Immunity, Tina Huyen Luong

University Honors Theses

Despite the clear effects and benefits of vaccinations on a population, there are many individuals that choose to not vaccinate for non-medical reasons, giving rise to anti-vaccination movements and vaccine hesitancy. This paper introduces the different types of vaccines and the effects of vaccines in the body and provides an examination of a case study of the 2019 Pacific Northwest measles outbreak. The outbreak is modeled using a proposed modified SIR model and solved using the Fourth-Order Runge-Kutta method. The results suggest that around day 20, almost the entire population becomes infected with the vaccine-resistant strain, which outcompetes the wild-type …

Chronic Wasting Disease Management Through Culling, Baiting, And Vaccination Methods, Jake Brockman

BIO 410 Spring 2019 Research Papers

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a lethal, progressive, and highly infectious disease that targets cervid populations through transmission by prions. There are currently no treatment options that are highly effective at stopping CWD, but the scientific community has great knowledge on CWD’s transmission and effects. In this literature review: culling, baiting and vaccination techniques are analyzed and compared to view which method could potentially work the best to control CWD. Long term effects of CWD could result in cervid population extermination and enormous economic losses for areas that are inhabited by cervids.

Analyzing Public View Towards Vaccination Using Twitter, Mahajan Rutuja

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Educating people about vaccination tends to target vaccine acceptance and reduction of hesitancy. Social media provides a promising platform for studying public perception regarding vaccination. In this study, we harvested tweets over a year related to vaccines from February 2018 to January 2019. We present a two-stage classifier to: (1) classify the tweets as relevant or non-relevant and (2) categorize them in terms of pro-vaccination, anti-vaccination, or neutral outlook. We found that the classifier was able to distinguish clearly between anti-vaccination and pro-vaccination tweets, but also misclassified many of these as neutral. Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation, we found that two …

Medical Papers and Journal Articles

Introduction: Pregnant women and infants are at risk of severe influenza and pertussis infection. Inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) and diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis vaccine (dTpa) are recommended during pregnancy to protect both mothers and infants. In Australia, uptake is not routinely monitored but coverage appears sub-optimal. Evidence on the safety of combined antenatal IIV and dTpa is fragmented or deficient, and there remain knowledge gaps of population-level vaccine effectiveness. We aim to establish a large, population-based, multi-jurisdictional cohort of mother-infant pairs to measure the uptake, safety and effectiveness of antenatal IIV and dTpa vaccines in three Australian jurisdictions. This is a first …

Cd8+ T-Cell Responses In Vaccination: Reconsidering Targets And Function In The Context Of Chronic Antigen Stimulation, Gabriela L. Cosma, Laurence Eisenlohr

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

Cytotoxic CD8 T cells play important roles in eliminating infected and transformed cells. Owing to their potential for therapeutic applications, significant efforts are dedicated toward developing CD8 T cell-based vaccines. Thus far, CD8 T-cell vaccination strategies have had limited success therapeutically in contrast to those targeting antibody-based immunity. However, if the current challenges and gaps in the understanding of T-cell biology are overcome, the full potential of rational CD8 T-cell vaccine design might be realized. Here, we review recent progress in this direction, focusing on target selection and maintenance of function in the settings of chronic infections and cancers.

The Effect Of Race On Parents' Intent To Vaccinate Their Children Against Human Papillomavirus, Ariana L. Ruiz Aguilar Jan 2018

The Effect Of Race On Parents' Intent To Vaccinate Their Children Against Human Papillomavirus, Ariana L. Ruiz Aguilar

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted disease that often presents as genital warts, but may also lead to cancers, including those of the vagina, penis, mouth and tonsils. Despite three vaccines being currently available to prevent HPV, the HPV vaccine retains a low national average vaccination rate when compared to the Tetanus-Diptheria- Pertussis (Tdap) vaccine. Considering the need for improvement it is important to identify factors that may be contributing to this low national immunization rate, one of them being parental race. The purpose of this literature review is to identify whether race affects parents' intent to vaccinate their …

Evaluating Parents' Decisions Regarding Recommended Childhood Vaccinations, Jennifer Kline

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Vaccinations are among the greatest accomplishments of public health. However, many parents are choosing not to vaccinate. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between social media influence and parents' decisions to vaccinate their children. The health belief model indicates that individuals' likelihood of engaging in a health-related behavior is determined by their perceptions of susceptibility, severity, benefits, and barriers. The research questions addressed whether there is an association between parents' perception of their children's disease susceptibility and their decisions about vaccination, and whether there is an association between exposure to messaging from social media and parents' …
