Dr. Robert L. Bennett: Pioneer And Definer Of Modern Physiatry., John F. Ditunno, Jr, Richard E. Verville

Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Faculty Papers

Few physiatrists today would appreciate Dr. Robert L. Bennett’s contributions to our specialty, since he most commonly was associated with poliomyelitis, a cured disease for over a half century. Less are aware of the pioneering fusion of physical medicine in 1941 by Krusen’s first resident with the independent living environment of the Georgia Warm Spring Foundation (GWSF) created by a USA president. Bennett recognized polio/GWSF as the workshop and laboratory for showcasing the new specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR). He taught us that accurate muscle testing determined the plan of muscle reeducation, which led to functional training with …

Proxy Citizenship And Transnational Advocacy: Colombian Activists From Putumayo To Washington, Dc, Winifred Tate Feb 2013

Proxy Citizenship And Transnational Advocacy: Colombian Activists From Putumayo To Washington, Dc, Winifred Tate

Faculty Scholarship

Proxy citizenship is the mechanism through which certain rights of citizenship—the ability to make claims for redress to a state—are conferred on activists through relationships with NGOs. Focusing on advocacy from within the policy process, U.S. and Colombian NGOs channeled political legitimacy and rights of access to Colombians, whose claims emerge from the experience of governance as articulated through testimony. This process, and its roots within the shared history of the Putumayo region of Colombia and Washington, DC, reveals emerging practices of citizenship claims and transnational political participation.

The Determinants Of Within Metropolitan Immigrant Moves, Richard J. Smith, Catherine Schmitt-Sands Feb 2013

The Determinants Of Within Metropolitan Immigrant Moves, Richard J. Smith, Catherine Schmitt-Sands

Social Work Faculty Publications

While the role of immigration and neighborhood change has been studied since the days of the Chicago School of Sociology, recent restrictions to immigration in concert with state and local initiatives to both enforce immigration policy or welcome immigrants raises new questions about neighborhood sorting within metropolitan areas. Policy makers are interested in recruiting high skilled and wealthy immigrants to attract investment and create jobs for native-born citizens. Some have endorsed welcoming immigrants as a solution to regional economic development and to stabilize high poverty urban neighborhoods. Are these immigrant recruitment policies realistic given existing patterns of immigrant housing location …

Lifting The Iron Curtain: Paul Anderson And The Cold War's First Sport Exchange, Dominic G. Morais, Jan Todd

School of Business Faculty Research

On 15 June 1955, Paul Anderson, the 340-pound American heavyweight, lay on a couch waiting for his first attempt at a weightlifting competition in Moscow between the Soviet Union and the United States.1 The event, held at the large, outdoor Zelyony Theater in Gorky Park, was the first of two contests being held as part of a goodwill trip authorized by the U.S. State Department.2 During the contest, lifter after lifter warmed up backstage, pacing nervously between sets as they awaited their tum on the enormous stage festooned with Soviet and American flags. Anderson and his teammates—Tommy Kono, …

The Impact Of Financialization On Management And Employment Outcomes, Rosemary L. Batt, Eileen Appelbaum Feb 2013

The Impact Of Financialization On Management And Employment Outcomes, Rosemary L. Batt, Eileen Appelbaum

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper examines three questions: 1) How and why have financial models of doing business emerged in the last three decades? 2) What new forms of financial capitalism have become important in the current period? 3) How do new financial intermediaries, such as private equity, and the financial strategies of nonfinancial corporations affect the management of companies and employment outcomes? The paper describes how deregulation and institutional change created the conditions for a new, more powerful role for finance capital in the governance of U.S. companies, and it synthesizes the empirical evidence on the process and outcomes of financialization in …
