Did Dr-Cafta Affect The Exports Of The Dominican Republic To The United States?, Maria Ivanova Reyes Peguero, Asger V. Hansen
Economics Faculty Publications
This article evaluates the impact the Dominican Republic and Central America Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA) had on the exports of the Dominican Republic (DR) to the United States. We estimate a gravity model for the DR exports to the 109 trade partners of the country from 1990 to 2014. This model quantifies the effect of the DR-CAFTA since 2007, when the agreement was ratified, and finds that the DR-CAFTA negatively affected DR exports to the US. We conduct further analysis of factors that could explain the decline in exports, in spite of the ratification of the agreement. We find that …

Military Law—Redefining Corroboration: The History, Intent, And Effect Of Congress’S Direction To Change How Confessions Are Corroborated In Military Courts, Seth M. Engel
Western New England Law Review
Since at least the seventeenth century, courts have required that confessions or admissions be corroborated by independent evidence to be admissible at trial. After the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces decided United States v. Adams, a case interpreting the military’s version of the corroboration rule, Congress quickly took action in response. Within months, Congress passed a law directing the President to rewrite the military’s corroboration rule, and a new rule was subsequently promulgated. Why was Congress so intent on overruling a military appellate court’s interpretation of an ancient and obscure rule of evidence? What was wrong …

First Amendment Law—Free Speech And Higher Education: Can Public Colleges And Universities Use “Safe Space” Policies To Restrict Speech On Campuses?, John L. Magistro Iv
Western New England Law Review
The freedom to speak openly, without fear of reprisal, is one of the great defining characteristics of our country. Nowhere is this freedom more crucial than the arena of higher education. Whether seeking a degree in the arts or sciences, philosophy or physics, students who venture off to college share one thing in common—their thirst for knowledge. However, this pursuit of knowledge can, and does, cause students to confront unfamiliar, uncomfortable, and sometimes unpleasant material. In college classrooms, cafeterias, and quads across the country, students have begun seeking shelter from thoughts and ideas that might make them uncomfortable. Lately, these …
First Amendment Law—The Regulation Of Religious Lobbyists: A Spiritual Battle For The Soul Of Democracy, Nicholas Melvin Smith
First Amendment Law—The Regulation Of Religious Lobbyists: A Spiritual Battle For The Soul Of Democracy, Nicholas Melvin Smith
Western New England Law Review
Governmental transparency is among the most fundamental requirements of a democracy. This belief is the backbone of codes of ethics amongst both states and the federal government. Codes of ethics universally apply to state employees, as well as those attempting to influence policy. We call these influencers lobbyists. Every state regulates the actions of lobbyists. Some states have broad, sweeping language that requires lobbyists to report a great deal of information to the state, which is then made public to voters, while other states allow for express exemptions to keep certain actions out of the public eye.
Because the federal …

Different Domains Of Physical Activity: The Role Of Leisure, Housework/Care Work, And Paid Work In Socioeconomic Differences In Reported Physical Activity, Dana Garbarski, Rachel Cusatis
Different Domains Of Physical Activity: The Role Of Leisure, Housework/Care Work, And Paid Work In Socioeconomic Differences In Reported Physical Activity, Dana Garbarski, Rachel Cusatis
Sociology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Inequality in socioeconomic status (SES)—education, income, and occupation—may further exacerbate the health gap between the “haves” and “have nots” by shaping health behaviors such as physical activity. For example, those in higher socioeconomic positions are consistently found to engage in more physical activity according to public health reports that focus on leisure activity. However, previous research investigating the role of SES in shaping engagement in housework, childcare, and paid work suggests different opportunities for physical activity. This discrepancy in how researchers ask questions about physical activity and the pathways people take to healthy activity raises the question: Do socioeconomic differences …
Mindfulness And Meditation For Pain Control And Stress Relief In The School-Age Children: An Integrative Review, Danielle Michelle Weekes
Mindfulness And Meditation For Pain Control And Stress Relief In The School-Age Children: An Integrative Review, Danielle Michelle Weekes
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Mindfulness and meditation strategies hold the potential to reduce stress and pain response amongst school-aged children. Stress affects children physically, emotionally, neurologically, and psychologically. Excessive amounts of stress could lead to detrimental consequences later in life. High levels of stress experienced by children can negatively impact these domains, unlike mild stressful events that support positive growth and development. Additionally, the child's perception of pain may be improved positivity during stressful events. Pain in children sometimes goes untreated and misunderstood by healthcare providers and caregivers of children. Implementation of mindfulness and meditation into the child's plan of care can enhance their …

Techniques For Regulating Military Force, Monica Hakimi
Techniques For Regulating Military Force, Monica Hakimi
Book Chapters
This chapter draws on the five chapters that follow—each of which describes the war powers in a single country—to identify and analyze some of the techniques for regulating this area of foreign affairs and then to reflect on the value of comparative research on it. Three basic techniques are: (1) to establish substantive standards on when the government may or may not use force, (2) to divide among different branches of government the authority to deploy the country’s armed forces, and (3) to subject such decisions to oversight or review. There is considerable variation, both across countries and over time …
How Did Coalitions Form During The Civil Rights Era In Mississippi?, Kenyatta L. Mitchell
How Did Coalitions Form During The Civil Rights Era In Mississippi?, Kenyatta L. Mitchell
Posters-at-the-Capitol Presentations
Over the past century, African Americans took part in building organizations to bring about equal rights and social change. Many organizations formed before Jim Crow but reached prominence during the Civil Rights Movement. The Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s was built on long-term strategies for gaining the right to vote, education, housing, and freedom from discrimination. Through organized nonviolent protests, the Civil Rights Movement broke the pattern of segregation at a national level through the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

American Bolsheviki: The First Red Scare In The United States, 1917 To 1920, Jonathan Dunning
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
This thesis looks to reframe the timeline of the First Red Scare in United States History. Historians of this period have consistently viewed the First Red Scare as occurring from 1919 to 1920. However, by viewing the First Red Scare as beginning in 1919, historians missed the fear of communism that developed in the US government and the American press and society throughout 1917 and 1918, starting immediately after the Bolshevik Revolution. Moreover, in the past, historians have done little to detail the connections between the Allied Intervention in Russia from 1918 to 1920 and the First Red Scare, despite …
On Writing And Righting History: The Stakes Of Holocaust Interpretation And Remembrance In Poland And The United States, Noa Gutow-Ellis
On Writing And Righting History: The Stakes Of Holocaust Interpretation And Remembrance In Poland And The United States, Noa Gutow-Ellis
Honors Theses
This thesis explores the ways in which American Jews - and Americans more generally, by way of the Americanization of the Holocaust - have come to think about and understand Poland and how Poland has subsequently rejected their narratives. Historically, American Jewish cultural works have placed Poland as a geographic space, nation, and people at the center of stories of Jewish suffering in the Holocaust and World War II. In its quest to right and correct historical misunderstandings, this project looks at the ways Poland has worked to completely revise the historical narrative.
Through tracing historiographies of separateness between Jewish …

Hiv Testing And Black Men Who Have Sex With Men, Stephaun Elite Wallace
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
HIV incidence among Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) is extremely high in contrast to their estimated population size and compared to other racial groups. Researchers have established that a significant proportion of these new cases annually originate from HIV transmission by BMSM who are unaware of their HIV status. The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship between age, sexual behavior, social support, substance use, internalized homophobia, depression, and HIV test history in BMSM. Guided by the social ecological model (SEM) as the conceptual framework, a quantitative cross-sectional study was designed to analyze secondary data …
