Matthew Steilen, The Place Of Norms In Separating Power, Matthew Steilen
Matthew Steilen, The Place Of Norms In Separating Power, Matthew Steilen
Baldy Center Blog
One of the chief intellectual discoveries of the past four years has been the degree to which government rests on norms: on a shared sense of the proper way to go about the business of government. This is unsurprising for followers of the law and society movement, with which the Baldy Center is so closely associated. From the beginning, scholars of law and society have demonstrated the limits of formalism in explaining how the law actually works. One can think of the Trump presidency as finally demonstrating for the wider world of legal scholars, the essential role of shared understandings, …

Imagining The Future Of Medicine Through A Lens Of Prejudice: Lessons From The American Past, Neil Nusbaum
Imagining The Future Of Medicine Through A Lens Of Prejudice: Lessons From The American Past, Neil Nusbaum
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Many healthcare management decisions today, such as those about facility construction, will have impact even decades beyond the traditional 5 or 10 year planning horizon. In order to get some idea of the possibilities and challenges of today’s long range forecasts in healthcare, it is instructive to look at how well similar efforts fared a century ago. Looking in retrospect now, the task of prognostication then was impeded in part by a failure of vision due to prejudicial attitudes of the era.

© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Using drone aircraft to deliver healthcare and other health-related services is a relatively new application of this technology in North America. For health service providers, drones represent a feasible means to increase their efficiency and ability to provide services to individuals, especially those in difficult to reach locations. This paper presents the results of a scoping review of the research literature to determine how drones are used for healthcare and health-related services in North America, and how such applications account for human operating and machine design factors. Data were collected from …
Equity 911: Framing Educational Equity As A National Emergency, Larissa Malone Phd
Equity 911: Framing Educational Equity As A National Emergency, Larissa Malone Phd
Faculty Publications
This paper considers equity as a crisis faced in classrooms across America. As such, an emergency framework is utilized to propose an approach that is apropos to the intense urgency a crisis requires. Using the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s National Planning Frameworks and their guiding principles, a survey of equity topics is discussed. In doing so, it is concluded that the level of inequity currently allowed in the field of education must be honestly assessed and a comprehensive plan that engages multiple stakeholders must be put in place for justice to be fully realized.

BACKGROUND: Biologic medications are emerging as options for treating chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). Several questions remain regarding patient selection, indications, clinical efficacy, and cost effectiveness.
METHODS: In November 2019, a group of physicians and scientists gathered to consider strategies for future studies regarding biologics. During the discussion, gaps in knowledge highlighted a need for a consensus on the present day use of biologics in polyp patients.
RESULTS: The goal of this guideline is to propose recommendations for the current use of biologics in CRSwNP as new evidence continues to emerge and inform practice.
CONCLUSION: We suggest that physicians …

Developing Interagency Collaboration To Address The Opioid Epidemic: A Scoping Review Of Joint Criminal Justice And Healthcare Initiatives, Andrea J Yatsco, Tiffany Champagne-Langabeer, Travis F Holder, Angela L Stotts, James R Langabeer
Library Staff Publications
BACKGROUND: With the current opioid epidemic impacting well over half of all counties across the United States, initiatives that encourage interagency collaboration between first responder organizations appear necessary to comprehensively address this crisis. Police, fire, and emergency medical services (EMS) are in a unique position to identify substance users and provide necessary resources to initiate treatment, yet there is not sufficient evidence of joint collaborative programs between law enforcement/first responders and healthcare providers.
METHODS: In this scoping review we examine the current state of joint criminal justice and healthcare interventions, specifically, opioid and substance use pre-arrest initiatives via emergency first …
¿Cómo Traducimos "Ni Una Más" Al Inglés?: Latin American Manifestation Of The Phenomenology Of Femicide, And The United States’ Subsequent Internal Neglect, Suemi Mendez
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This paper aims to tackle two components in analyzing the phenomenological concept of femicide, most simply known as the killing of women because they are women through structural violence and oppression. First, it will develop its deployment within the Latin American framework as it has been adapted to function within the regional lexicon, both socially and legislatively. This assessment will serve to address the successes and failures thus far in tackling femicide as the location with the highest statistics globally. Through this foregrounding, it will lead into how this revised deployment of femicide fits into the context of Global North …

Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) sales and use have increased rapidly, yet point-of-sale e-cigarette availability and marketing is understudied. We estimated changes in e-cigarette availability and marketing among tobacco retailers in the U.S., and associations with neighborhood characteristics. A national sample of tobacco retailers in the Contiguous U.S. was audited in 2014 and 2015 (n = 1,905 and n = 2,126, respectively) to observe e-cigarette availability and marketing (signs, ads, displays and promotions) and generate national prevalence estimates. Store, neighborhood and state level correlates of 2015 e-cigarette availability, price promotions and exterior advertising were analyzed using multilevel mixed-effects generalized linear models. E-cigarettes …
Eating The Heart Of Weetigo World: Decolonial Imaginaries In The Stories Of Louise Erdrich And Tomson Highway, Rebecca Lynne Fullan
Eating The Heart Of Weetigo World: Decolonial Imaginaries In The Stories Of Louise Erdrich And Tomson Highway, Rebecca Lynne Fullan
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
My dissertation asks what the decolonial possibilities of fiction are in the context of the settler colonial imaginaries particular to the United States and Canada. The ongoing process of settler colonialism demands various forms of conversion from Indigenous people: ecological/land based, religious, educational, legal, familial, but the construct of “conversion” obscures Indigenous worldviews, and indeed worlds, which function according to different principles. I interpret Erdrich and Highway's work in the context of Anishinaabe and Cree narratives and story-structures. These offer examples of what can constitute broader decolonial imaginaries, through which perception and creation of other, more liveable worlds is possible. …

Covid-19 And Us Tax Policy: What Needs To Change?, Reuven Avi-Yonah
Articles
The COVID-19 Pandemic already feels like a historical turning point akin to Word Wars I and II and the Great Depression. It may signal the end of the second period of globalization (1980-2020) and a change in the relative positions of the US and China. It could also lead in the US to significant changes in tax policy designed to bolster the social safety net which was revealed as very porous during the pandemic. In what follows I will first discuss some short-term effects of the pandemic and then some potential longer-term effects on US tax policy.

As a result of the 2019 novel human coronavirus (COVID-19) global spread, medical examiner/coroner offices will inevitably encounter increased numbers of COVID-19-infected decedents at autopsy. While in some cases a history of fever and/or respiratory distress (eg, cough or shortness of breath) may suggest the diagnosis, epidemiologic studies indicate that the majority of individuals infected with COVID-19 develop mild to no symptoms. Those dying with-but not of-COVID-19 may still be infectious, however. While multiple guidelines have been issued regarding autopsy protocol in cases of suspected COVID-19 deaths, there is some variability in the recommendations. Additionally, limited recommendations to date have …
