Identity Formation During Nonviolent Protests: A Thematic And Structural Narrative Analysis Of Interviews Conducted With March For Our Lives Protesters, Richard Shawn Queeney
Identity Formation During Nonviolent Protests: A Thematic And Structural Narrative Analysis Of Interviews Conducted With March For Our Lives Protesters, Richard Shawn Queeney
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
In the spring of 2018, student protesters around the United States took to the streets and campuses of their schools to call for tighter gun control laws following the mass shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland, FL. The highly visible nonviolent protest movement, known as the March for Our Lives (MFOL), was carried out by young people still in middle or high school and was fraught with risks that included disagreement with parents, teachers, and school administrators, detention or other penalties on their school record, and threats of violent harassment from counter protesters. MFOL protesters in and …
Advancing Colorectal Cancer Screening Adherence In A Community Hospital: Consultative Report, Tanya Seaton
Advancing Colorectal Cancer Screening Adherence In A Community Hospital: Consultative Report, Tanya Seaton
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the top three leading causes of death in both men and women, as well as the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in both men and women in the United States. Screening, on the other hand, can aid in the detection and prevention of CRC. Early reports suggested that colorectal screening compliance could significantly reduce the risk of mortality associated with CRC in people aged 50 to 75 years. Colonoscopy cancellations have been identified as a significant contributor to non-compliance with CRC screening in subsequent studies. However, research indicates that patient navigators are used …

The Relationship Between Insurance And Health Outcomes Of Diabetes Mellitus Patients In Maryland: A Retrospective Archival Study, Soo-Hoon Lee, Samuel L. Brown, Andrew A. Bennett
Management Faculty Publications
Background
Past studies examining the health outcomes of diabetes mellitus (DM) patients found that social determinants of health disparities were associated with variabilities in health outcomes. However, improving access to healthcare, such as health insurance, should mitigate negative health outcomes. The aim of the study was to explore the association between four types of health insurance, namely, Medicare Fee-For-Service (FFS), Medicare Managed Care (MC), Private FFS, and Private MC plans, and the health outcomes of DM patients, controlling for patients’ social determinants of health.
Methods
This is a retrospective cross-sectional archival record study to explore the relationships between types of …

Using The Seips Framework To Understand Systems-Level Factors Affecting Obstetric Nurse Decision Making: A Convergent Parallel Mixed Methods Study, Samantha Bernstein
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
The United States has the worst maternal morbidity and mortality in the developed world, with a maternal death rate of 17.3/100,000 live births. Efforts to improve this have not been fruitful. This dissertation suggests that future research with a patient safety focus and human factors framework may improve our understanding of this multifactorial problem and identify new potential solutions for improving this devastating crisis. The first manuscript is a scoping review discussing the use of trigger tools to identify women in labor in need of care escalation. The second manuscript is a realist review describing current approaches to the problem …

SARS-CoV-2 infections are characterized by viral proliferation and clearance phases and can be followed by low-level persistent viral RNA shedding. The dynamics of viral RNA concentration, particularly in the early stages of infection, can inform clinical measures and interventions such as test-based screening. We used prospective longitudinal quantitative reverse transcription PCR testing to measure the viral RNA trajectories for 68 individuals during the resumption of the 2019-2020 National Basketball Association season. For 46 individuals with acute infections, we inferred the peak viral concentration and the duration of the viral proliferation and clearance phases. According to our mathematical model, we found …

This book is written for students early in college to provide a guide to the founding documents and structures of governance that form the United States political system. This book is called American Government and Politics in Principle and Practice because you will notice that what has been inscribed in law has not always been applied in practice-particularly for indigenous peoples, enslaved peoples, people of color, women, LGBTQIA+, people with disabilities, those formerly incarcerated, immigrants and the working class within U.S. society. In designing this book, we have two goals. First, we want you to know what the founding documents …
A Comparative Analysis Of Mortgage Loan Assignments And A Call For Reform In The United States, Julia Patterson Forrester Rogers
A Comparative Analysis Of Mortgage Loan Assignments And A Call For Reform In The United States, Julia Patterson Forrester Rogers
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
The flow of capital into mortgage loans depends heavily on the ability to transfer those loans. In the United States, Germany, and other countries, mortgage loans are transferred on the secondary market. A loan originator may sell loans to a purchaser who intends to hold the loans and collect payments or to a third party who will pool the loans and issue mortgage-backed securities to investors.
In the United States, assignments of mortgage loans have created legal challenges and have been the subject of much litigation. The transfer and storage of large volumes of paper promissory notes, still the prevailing …

This paper uses an application of the Bertrand model to explain the relationship between HFCS deliveries and the prices of HFCS-42 and sugar. It finds that the HFCS deliveries and the prices of HFCS-42 and refined sugar are cointegrated over the period 1994:q1-2020:q1. The main results, based on the estimated long-run elasticities, show that a one percent increase in the price of HFCS-42 decreases HFCS deliveries by 0.153 percent. One implication of this result is that it would be helpful for the HFCS industry to prevent large increases in the HFCS price, which would prevent large decreases in HFCS deliveries …

The COVID-19 global pandemic has brought new focus to human mortality. The virus has reminded many people that they need to have a valid will or otherwise make plans for the effective transmission of their property on death. Yet stay-at-home orders and social distancing recommendations make it difficult or impossible to comply with the traditional rules for validly executing wills. Across most common law jurisdictions, the traditional requirements call for two witnesses in the physical presence of the testator. Because of the practical difficulties of safely executing documents during the pandemic with witnesses assembled in physical proximity, many jurisdictions internationally …

Edgar B. Madsen. The Shoestring Letters: A Tribute To The Immigrant, Inger M. Olsen
Edgar B. Madsen. The Shoestring Letters: A Tribute To The Immigrant, Inger M. Olsen
The Bridge
Edgar Madsen’s parents, Niels and Signe Madsen, left their home and family in Denmark in 1928 to seek their fortune in the United States. For three decades after their emigration, their only contact with their loved ones back home was through letters, which inspired the name of Edgar B. Madsen’s charming, thought-provoking book, The Shoestring Letters: A Tribute to the Immigrant. After being stored in a thatched roof attic for decades, the letters Niels and Signe sent to their loved ones in Jutland came to light when the family cleared out their grandfather’s house; they made their return journey …

The Motivation To Volunteer: Understanding Volunteer Motivation At United States Industrial Heritage Museums And Organizations, Cooper Sheldon
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Industrial Heritage Museums and Organizations (IHMOs) in the United States (US) and their volunteers are underrepresented in the literature on volunteerism. The motivation and demographics of volunteers in IHMOs within the US are examined in this paper. Research into this topic is exploratory and little is known, therefore any hypothesis was based on personal observations as an AmeriCorps VISTA member in a variety of US museums. An online survey was sent out to three hundred and eighty-five museums across the US, along with conducting twelve in-person or over-the-phone interviews with museum practitioners and volunteers. This research found that a majority …

Part I of this Note soberly explores and delineates the perceived and real threats of vaping for America’s youth, concluding with an analysis of the socioeconomic and developmental health effects of nicotine addiction. Part II delves into the federal government’s response to e-cigarettes as well as the powers and limitations of federal regulation under the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) “Deeming Rule” and the potential effectiveness of an increase in the national tobacco purchase age or a federal ban on flavored vaping products. Part III discusses the realistic benefits of taking a harm reduction approach to youth vaping in the …

Most amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) cases are considered sporadic, without a known genetic basis, and environmental exposures are thought to play a causal role. To learn more about sporadic ALS etiology, we recruited n = 188 ALS patients from northern New England and Ohio and matched controls 2:1 from the general population of the same regions. Questionnaires evaluated the association between a variety of lifestyle, behavioral (ie, hobbies and activities), and occupational factors and the risk of ALS, including the duration of time between exposure and ALS onset, and exposure frequency. Head trauma was associated with increased ALS risk (adjusted …

International Commercial Courts In The United States And Australia: Possible, Probable, Preferable?, S. I. Strong
International Commercial Courts In The United States And Australia: Possible, Probable, Preferable?, S. I. Strong
Faculty Articles
As worldwide interest in international commercial courts grows, questions arise as to whether individual nations can or should seek to compete in the “litigation market” by developing their own cross-border business courts. This essay compares the prospects of the United States and Australia in this regard, focusing on whether it is possible (Section II), probable (Section III), and preferable (Section IV) for one or both of these two federalized, common law nations to develop an international commercial court as part of their national judicial systems. The inquiry is particularly intriguing given that one country (the United States) has had a …
