Recollections Of The Establishment Of The Congregation Of The Mission In The United States, Part 2, Joseph Rosati C.M.

Vincentian Studies

The translation of Joseph Rosati’s memoirs begun in the first issue is continued here, covering their arrival in Baltimore and further travels to Bardstown, Kentucky from June to November 1816. The daily rule that the Vincentians followed during their travels is meticulously described. As in the first part, Rosati documents who helped the Vincentians on their way and what the towns they visited were like.

The Daughters Of Charity At Carville: 1896–1981, Daniel Hannefin D.C.

Vincentian Studies

This article gives the history of the Louisiana Leper Home, later U.S. Marine Hospital No. 66, and profiles the Daughters of Charity who ran it and provided exceptional health care. The Sisters of Charity and patients faced tremendous hardships. Both groups worked to change public perceptions of Hansen’s Disease (formerly known as leprosy) and policies rooted in prejudice and fear. Patients were originally isolated from the world and from each other. This changed thanks to the sisters’ and residents’ efforts, and the facility served more outpatients. Important research into the disease’s transmission and treatment was also conducted there.

The Political Economy Of Drug Trafficking: The Herrera Organization (Mexico And The United States), Peter A. Lupsha, Kip Schlegel Nov 1980

The Political Economy Of Drug Trafficking: The Herrera Organization (Mexico And The United States), Peter A. Lupsha, Kip Schlegel

Research Papers

In this paper we examine the effects of this drug trafficking contrabandista activity, the rise and decline of Mexico's leadership as an exporter of illicit drugs, and some of the effects of organized trafficking on the political economy of both Mexico and the United States. Smuggling and contraband are endemic to borderlands. As one knowledgeable observer estimated, "anywhere from 20 percent to 30 percent of all economic activity along our Southwestern border is illegal contraband.,2 Of this contraband trade only a small percentage involves the smuggling of illegal drugs. Most of it involves the illegal rebalancing of border-created supply-and demand …

Markets And Merchants: Economic Diversification In Colonial Virginia, 1700-1775, Peter Victor Bergstrom Jan 1980

Markets And Merchants: Economic Diversification In Colonial Virginia, 1700-1775, Peter Victor Bergstrom

Doctoral Dissertations

While the literature detailing the intricacies of the colonial tobacco trade is extensive, and often quite persuasive, its conclusion that Virginia's economy began and ended in the production of tobacco is misleading. Virginia's expansion into previously unsettled lands, and the tremendous increase in the size of its labor force during the first three quarters of the eighteenth century did produce a gigantic growth in the tobacco trade, but it had other effects as well. Grain and meat products along with naval stores and iron contributed little to the colony's economic output in 1701, yet by 1774 they accounted for better …

The Court-Martial: A Historical Survey, David A. Schlueter

Faculty Articles

In this article, Captain (P) Schlueter describes the development of the legal tribunal known as the court-martial. Beginning with the use of this form of trial in the armies of imperial Rome two thousand years ago, the author traces its evolution through the Middle Ages, to Britain from the Renaissance to the American Revolution. The focus then shifts to the United States, and the focus then shifts to the present day.

The Employment Patterns Of Criminal Justice Graduates Of The University Of Alabama In Birmingham: A Follow-Up Study., Watcharapol Prasarnrajkit

All ETDs from UAB

The discipline of Criminal Justice began in the early twentieth century with the initiation of the Berkeley Police School in 1908 by August Vollmer. This school was the first formal effort to train policemen in the United States. Many of the instructors were drawn from the University of California at Berkeley. 1 Vollmer believed that "the professional policeman would be distinguished from his predecessors by the level of his formal training both before and after recruitment and that new ideas from the universities could provide valuable insights into the causes of crime and the means for preventing it."
