The Effects Of United States Inter-American Policy On U.S. Relations With Chile, 1958-1978, Michael Hunter Brown
The Effects Of United States Inter-American Policy On U.S. Relations With Chile, 1958-1978, Michael Hunter Brown
History Theses & Dissertations
This thesis is an examination and explanation of United States relations with Chile from 1958-1978. The policy of U.S. opposition to the Chilean left, especially during the government of Marxist Salvador Allende from 1970-1973, and support of anti-Marxist forces in Chile, which included a repressive military dictatorship established by a coup in 1973, reflect the overall themes of anti-Marxism and protection of American economic interests inherent in U.S. global and inter-American policy since the Second World War. The major sources of information for this study are reports from investigations and hearings conducted by the United States Congress, especially Covert Action …

The American Family In A Decade Of Change: The 1950s, Calvin Bryon Thomas
History Theses & Dissertations
After World War II, various forces developed or gained momentum which affected families in the fifties. In the 1950s, many men witnessed a decline of authority in the family unit, while women and children achieved new positions of importance. Also, certain values of families deviated from those of earlier generations. Furthermore, family members had more spare time for leisure activities within and outside the home.
Throughout the decade, many young people. began to date, go steady, engage in premarital sex, and marry sooner than in former years. The marriage rate remained fairly high in the decade and the birth rate …

Malpractice suits have been filed against physicians with increasing frequency in recent years. While many different reasons for the increase have been given, among those suggested is that physicians in general are not knowledgeable about medical jurisprudence to the degree they are able to prevent legal action being taken against them. If this is so, then there is an implication of a need to educate prospective and practicing physicians in the subject of medical jurisprudence.

Mccarthyism In Utah, Richard Swanson
Mccarthyism In Utah, Richard Swanson
Theses and Dissertations
The exaggerated anti-Communist crusade of Senator Joseph McCarthy allegedly gained the support of a majority of Americans during the early 1950's. It is historically important and interesting to question that supposition by considering the character of McCarthy's following in each state. This study shows that in Utah sympathy for the second Red Scare abounded and evidences of McCarthyism were readily apparent.
Three indicators illustrate Utah's support for the Wisconsin senator. The defeat of Elbert Thomas in 1950 dramatically epitomizes the successful use of incriminating allegations effectively employed by McCarthy. The election, or re-election, of McCarthy supporters and the defeat of …

The Demise Of The Dialectic: Historical Consciousness And The American Experience, Samuel Martineau
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
This thesis originated out of a desire to utilize some of the basic insights of the Frankfurt school in order to analyze the significance and meaning of the structural dynamics of the American past. In doing this, I have attempted to provide some of the basic categories of Critical Theory with a concrete historical content, and I have sought to demonstrate the absolute necessity of including these categories in any historical investigation that seeks to convey the ultimate meaning of the history that it studies.
The thesis itself is divided into two parts. In part One, I present what might …
A Study Of The Juror Interaction Process In Criminal Trials, Paul E. Dow
A Study Of The Juror Interaction Process In Criminal Trials, Paul E. Dow
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
Four hundred and fifty-four jurors who served on forty-three criminal trials in Syracuse, New York, were sent questionnaires designed to elicit information concerning their deliberative behavior. One hundred and ninety-four jurors representing 42.6 percent of the total sample returned the survey instrument. This figure represents the efforts of one initial survey and two follow-up surveys.
The purpose of the research is to gain insights into individual and collective juror behavior. After a review of the traditional, legal realist, and behavioral literature concerning deliberative behavior several hypotheses were generated and tested. Two of the four hypotheses received some support. Specifically, a …

The people who are the power entitled to say what they want, are less qualified to say how, and in what form, they are to obtain it, or in other words, public opinion can determine ends, but is less fit to examine and select means to those ends. (James Bryce, The American Commonwealth Vol. I, p. 361)
This study examines the United States government’s domestic information agencies, the formulation of information policy, and the effects of that information policy upon the nation during the Second World War. In exploring information policy and techniques, the study analyzes the epistemological axiom, “What …

Bryan, Populism And Utah, Herbert E. Cihak
Theses and Dissertations
William Jennings Bryan exercised great political power for thirty years in America. Through his efforts the Democratic Party power base was broadened to include Jews, Negroes businessmen, and farmers. Bryan's call for political and social reform found many supporters in the State of Utah.
It is difficult to assess what actually caused William J. Bryan to lose the 1900 Presidential election in Utah. Yet, we must put to rest the conclusion that he lost solely because silver was an unimportant issue to the Utah electorate in 1900. The powerful influence of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on …
