A Comparison Between The Usa And Australia In The Administration Of Communication Studies In Higher Education, Michael Kaye, Bobby H. Patton
A Comparison Between The Usa And Australia In The Administration Of Communication Studies In Higher Education, Michael Kaye, Bobby H. Patton
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article compares the administration of communication studies programs in the United States and Australia, using a faculty exchange between the University of Kansas and Kuring-gai College of Advanced Education as a case study. The analysis identifies three major areas of difference: historical development, philosophical orientation, and administrative policies. In the United States, communication programs largely evolved from speech departments with strong rhetorical and skills-based traditions, while in Australia the field developed more recently with interdisciplinary and critical orientations. Philosophical divergences are evident in curricular emphases, with American programs often stressing public speaking and skills training, and Australian programs incorporating …

Review Of Environmental Protection Policy, By E. Rehbinder And R. Stewart, James E. Krier
Review Of Environmental Protection Policy, By E. Rehbinder And R. Stewart, James E. Krier
Reviews
Environmental problems have been on the agenda of the federal government in the United States for roughly a century now, about half of the government's life, and a dominant concern for the last two decades. The European Economic Community ("EEC"), itself a system perhaps on its way to some brand of federalism, presents a similar but much foreshortened picture. The EEC has been concerned with the environment for about the last half of its thirty year life. Environmental Protection Policy' ("EPP") is a richly detailed study of environmental policy in these two very different systems.

Symbol Of American Discontent: The Selective Service During The Vietnam War, Jean B. Todd
History Theses & Dissertations
This thesis presents an intensive study of the nature and scope of the Selective Service System in an effort to analyze the system that became the focal point of growing discontent with the Vietnam War. The primary objective is to determine whether the Selective Service System equitably executed its congressionally mandated objective of raising military manpower. In order to ascertain whether the System operated with balance and fairness, its structure and procedures are examined. The study of the Selective Service System's structure 'necessitated an analysis of the characteristics and backgrounds of both administrators and those who met the System's quotas …

Mechanisms Of Crustal Deformation In The Western United States, United States, National Aeronautics And Space Administration
Geology
The basic purpose of the research carried out under this grant was to obtain a better understanding of deformation processes in the western United States. The research considered both deterministic models and random or statistical models. One important aspect of deformation is the rheology of the lithosphere. We have been one of the leading proponents of an intracrustal asthenosphere. This is a soft zone at mid-crustal depths that has an important effect on a variety of tectonic phenomena.

The Genetic Relatedness Of United States Prototype Bluetongue Viruses By Rna/Rna Hybridization, Timothy F. Kowalik
The Genetic Relatedness Of United States Prototype Bluetongue Viruses By Rna/Rna Hybridization, Timothy F. Kowalik
Biology
The genetic relatedness of the prototype bluetongue viruses isolated in the United States were examined by RNA/RNA hybridization. Genomic dsRNAs of the five United States prototype bluetongue viruses were separated by either SOS-PAGE or NuSieve agarose gel electrophoresis. These were blotted by both standard Northern technique and a recently developed, rapid alkali-blotting method to positively charged nylon membranes. The blotted RNAs were then probed with 3'-end labeled dsRNA of each serotype. Initially, single segments were individually hybridized to identify cognate genes. Total genomic dsRNAs were subsequently probed to determine genetic relatedness. The genes coding for the nonstructural proteins NS1 and …

Hydrology And Water Quality Of The Edwards Aquifer Associated With Barton Springs In The Austin Area, Texas, Raymond M. Slade Jr., Michael E. Dorsey, Sheree L. Stewart
KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports
Urban development over the Edwards aquifer in the Austin, Texas, area has caused concerns about the availability and quality of water in the aquifer. The study area, the Edwards aquifer that discharges to Barton Springs, includes parts of Travis and Hays Counties and extends from the city of Kyle to the Colorado River. A large part of the aquifer lies within the Austin metropolitan area one of the fastest growing areas in the Nation. As of 1985, only about 30,000 people used water from the aquifer, however, according to recent official city of Austin population projections, about 86,000 more people …
