Nonlethal Technology And Fourth Epoch War: A New Paradigm Of Politico-Military Force, Robert J. Bunker, T. Lindsay Moore Jan 1996

Nonlethal Technology And Fourth Epoch War: A New Paradigm Of Politico-Military Force, Robert J. Bunker, T. Lindsay Moore

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

How politico-military force will be employed in future war is of major concern to U.S. national security and, because of its operational leadership in this area, to the Army's Force XXI campaign plan. It is envisioned that such force will qualitatively change because of the introduction of advanced technology. This technology will extend the West's continuing mastery of the application of political violence. No longer in war will the West have the capability to solely to kill; now, like a martial arts master, it will be able to reply upon nonlethal means to disarm an opponent. As a result, an …

[Review Of] Mary Carol Hopkins, Braving A New World: Cambodian (Khmer) Refugees In An American City, Corswang Ngin Jan 1996

[Review Of] Mary Carol Hopkins, Braving A New World: Cambodian (Khmer) Refugees In An American City, Corswang Ngin

Ethnic Studies Review

Cambodians, officially classified as Asian Americans, are a part of this large group which contributes to the country's fastest growing minority population. The Cambodians in Middle City, the pseudonym of a Midwestern city, however, live in a world unlike any resembling those in middle Asian America. They are victims of poverty, of dangerous urban housing and of social isolation. The majority are of poor health, illiterate in English, and too old or too distracted to learn. Hopkins' study of this community is classic ethnography, describing in vivid details the ordinary family and Buddhist ceremonial life of the Cambodians as they …

Friend Of Government Or Damned Tory: The Creation Of The Loyalist Identity In Revolutionary New Hampshire, 1774-1784, James Leslie Walsh Jan 1996

Friend Of Government Or Damned Tory: The Creation Of The Loyalist Identity In Revolutionary New Hampshire, 1774-1784, James Leslie Walsh

Doctoral Dissertations

The dissertation examines the creation of loyalist identity during the American Revolution. Two distinct identities were fashioned, one by the loyalists themselves and a second competing identity which was created for them by their opponents, the radical faction of the revolutionary movement. Both identities were created consciously and for political or economic motives.

The identity created by the loyalists through their actions and words is to be found in a close reading of the claims filed with the Claims Commission created by Parliament in 1783. The dissertation argues that loyalists self-fashioned an individual political identity, as part of the creation …

"Getting America Told": The Black Press And Its Dialogue With White America, 1914-1919, William George Jordan Jan 1996

"Getting America Told": The Black Press And Its Dialogue With White America, 1914-1919, William George Jordan

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the role of African-American newspapers as a forum for interracial discourse during World War I. The black press addressed itself to white America, arguing that African-Americans' participation in the war made them worthy of full citizenship, pointing out the similarity between the nation's aim of championing democracy in Europe and the goal of creating racial justice in America, and drawing parallels between atrocities against civilians in Europe and the lynching of African Americans in the Southern states. Some influential white Americans paid attention to these arguments and responded to them. In doing so, they sought to use …

"We Shall Overcome" And Gangsta Rap : An Investigation Of The Role Of Music In The Civil Rights Movement And In Contemporary Urban Society, Christopher Yurchuck Jan 1996

"We Shall Overcome" And Gangsta Rap : An Investigation Of The Role Of Music In The Civil Rights Movement And In Contemporary Urban Society, Christopher Yurchuck

Honors Theses

The non-violent protestors of the Civil Rights Movement found in their music, a sense of healing and of cohesion within their group, a group of blacks and whites alike, fighting the injustices of a supposedly just society. They used the Freedom Songs to express dissention with the system, to disseminate information to other movement participants, and to bind the group together. The black militants of the '60s in the Civil Rights Movement did not use music as a form of their expression; rather, their silence, an absence of music, said it all. Today, gangsta rappers are a fusion of the …

Philanthropic Leadership : Comparing Historical And Contemporary Methods Of Philanthropic Giving, Patrick Rucker Jan 1996

Philanthropic Leadership : Comparing Historical And Contemporary Methods Of Philanthropic Giving, Patrick Rucker

Honors Theses

America has a unique tradition of philanthropy. Wealthy benefactors have created some of our most notable institutions for health, education and the arts. The level of philanthropic giving has been consistently high yet the tradition of giving has taken many shapes and assumes several forms today. One of the most interesting and currently debated forms of charitable giving is money directed towards social change or the achievement of a certain social agenda. Money is given today to support or stall legal abortions, racial integration, and a host of other social issues. This paper will examine the tradition of giving in …

Lobbyists : Leadership In A Political Context, Kelly L. Beeland

Honors Theses

Though both participation in General Assembly from a lobbyist's perspective and library research, this project addresses the question: How do lobbyists serve as leaders to interest groups and within the political process? The content of this research explores the role of lobbyists as leaders in the political context. This project tracks the lobbyist's behavior and actions (not just the evolution of a bill) at specific points in the legislative process. Finally, the tasks lobbyists perform and the role they fill in the political process are defined in terms of leadership theory. In the context of this definition, lobbyists are analyzed …

Eleanor And Hillary : First Lady Leadership In The Contexts Of History And Contemporary Culture, Beth Allen Jan 1996

Eleanor And Hillary : First Lady Leadership In The Contexts Of History And Contemporary Culture, Beth Allen

Honors Theses

The work of this paper is important to leadership studies for two reasons. First of all, such examination furthers the exploration of first lady leadership and interprets the lives and works of ER and HRC in a new way. Also, this paper will help test the validity of a new model of contingency theory. Wren and Swatez explain that leadership studies needs such a model, one "that identifies and affirms the various levels of historical and cultural forces that act upon the leadership process" (247).

Contingency theories of leadership examine the relationship between leaders, followers, and the situation, and often …

Capitalist "Communes" In The United States: The Commodification Of Urban Space And The Rise Of Master-Planned Communities, David Lee Derossett Jan 1996

Capitalist "Communes" In The United States: The Commodification Of Urban Space And The Rise Of Master-Planned Communities, David Lee Derossett

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The U.S. has experienced a dramatic proliferation of corporate master-planned communities, along with a related equally sharp increase in the numbers of people governed by private residential community associations (RCAs). Increasing by approximately 9,500 annually, RCA's are expected to grow from 130,000 in 1990 to approximately 225,000 by the year 2000. This trend is a manifestation of both the historical commodification of urban and community space and the gradual imposition of the corporate bureaucratic structure into community maintenance and governance. Intended to stimulate commodity need fulfillment and ensure the continued dominance of patriarchal bourgeois ideology, this new community form has …

Losing The Struggle For Another Voice: The Case Of Family Law, Carol Smart Oct 1995

Losing The Struggle For Another Voice: The Case Of Family Law, Carol Smart

Dalhousie Law Journal

This paper is based on empirical work in progress concerning co-parenting and the ways in which mothers and fathers organize the care of children after separation. It deals with two foundational issues: Gilligan's concept of "another voice" and its congruence with recent developments in family law in the United Kingdom and otherdeveloped countries including Canada and the United States. The author concludes that the ethic of care incorporated in the British legislation and given some expression in the judicial system does not fully recognize two kinds of caring. There is caring about and caring for. The caring about of fathers …

The Impact Of A Health Education Program On The Attitudes Of African-American Hypertensive Clients Regarding Adherence To A Prescribed Medical Regimen, Teresa Y. Mcpherson May 1995

The Impact Of A Health Education Program On The Attitudes Of African-American Hypertensive Clients Regarding Adherence To A Prescribed Medical Regimen, Teresa Y. Mcpherson

Theses & Dissertations

This quasi-experimental study examined the effect of an educational program on the attitudes of hypertensive African-American clients regarding their adherence to a prescribed medical regimen.

Despite increased public awareness and improved treatment in hypertension, poorly controlled hypertension continues to be a significant problem especially among blacks and other minority populations in the United States (Shea, Misra, Ehlich, Field, & Francis, 1991). On the basis of different experiences, people may form different beliefs and, therefore different attitudes about the consequences of performing or not performing a behavior (Ajzen & Fishbein, 1980). Studies have indicated that a variety of factors such as …
